MO Local Obituaries for the Week of January 30, 2008 Harold E. “Bud” Brakefield Harold E. “Bud” Brakefield was born on July 27, 1925 at Ishmael, Missouri to John and Eula Brakefield. He passed away Thursday, December 20, 2007 at Christian Brothers NE Hospital in North St. Louis, Missouri. On April 9, 1949 he married Eula Eggers from Jefferson City, Missouri. He attended school in Washington County, Missouri. On May 10, 1944 he enlisted in the Navy after boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Station and additional training in Little Creek, Virginia. He served in the Asian Theatre of Operations during WWII, assisting in the liberation of the Philippines. After being honorably discharged on June 11, 1946, he worked at the Cupples Co. and in construction in St. Louis, Missouri. Shortly there after, he suffered a back injury falling out of a tree trying to retrieve a squirrel, which left him a paraplegic. Not allowing this to deter him, he supported his family with his tool sharpening business. When his eyesight forced him to retire, he occupied much of his time as an usher at his church, Grace Lutheran Chapel and with volunteer work at Jefferson Barracks. He served on the Board of Directors of the ateway Paralyzed Veterans of America and the City of Black Jack, Americans with isabilities Act Committee and Human Rights Commission. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Bernice Evans and one brother, Edward “Hen” Brakefield. He is survived by wife; daughter, Katheran and husband Lindell Carr of Black Jack, Missouri; two granddaughters, Elizabeth (Carl) and Rebecca Car; two great grandsons, Eric and Corbin Day. Bud donated his body to research so a memorial service was held Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Chapel, St. Louis, Missouri. Jewel Floyd Bryan Jewel Bryan was born on January 2, 1926 to the union of George Ellis Bryan and Lola Pearl Bryan nee Walker. He passed away Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the age of 82 years, 4 days. Jewel was united in marriage to Sallie S. Bryan nee Bryant and they enjoyed 41 years together. He is survived by his wife; his children, Scott G. Bryan, Daniel Castelluccio and Angelia Mahnken; one grandchild, T.J. Services were held, Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at Shepard Funeral Chapel, St. Louis with interment at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Ida “May” B. Garringer Ida “May” B. Garringer, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri was born August 9, 1936 in Davisville, Missouri to Lushen Firdie and Alice May (Tallent) Pyatt. She passed away Saturday, January 19, 2008, at the Lawrence County Manor in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. She was 71 years old. May was married to Elmer Leroy Cates of Mt. Vernon, Missouri on May 25, 1956. To this union two sons were born. Elmer preceded her in death on February 4, 1963. Later, she was married to David Lester Garringer, of Mt. Vernon, for seven years. To this union, one son was born. May babysat full time in her home for many years. In 1979, she began working at Lawrence County Manor as a housekeeper and continued there until her retirement in 2005. May, affectionately known to her grandchildren as “Grandma May”, will be lovingly remembered as a kind-hearted, generous and Godly woman. She loved quilting, embroidery and crocheting as well as creating many original arts and crafts pieces that she gave to others. Cooking was her lifelong passion. She was also a professional cake decorator and made many wedding cakes. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Elmer; and brother, Jesse Pyatt. She is survived by three sons; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Terris Lee Cates and wife, Caryl (Gourley) and children Stephanie, Nathan, Christopher, Emily and Kelly of Rolla, Missouri; Steven Lynn Cates and son Dustin, of Miller, Missouri and Steve’s daughter, Chasity Mooney and husband, Sean, and children Brianna and Cody, of Fair Grove, Missouri; and Charles David Garringer and wife Lucinda (Buus) and children LeeAnna and Marinna of Miller, Missouri. Holcomb of Bourbon, Missouri, was born on March 3, 1957 in Bakersfield, California to Lewis Franklin and Lulubelle (nee Jay) Holcomb, and passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at the age of 50 years. He married Helen E. Beelek on July 4, 1996 and worked as a laborer in the auto industry for many years. He and his wife were baptized together in the New Life of Hope Church. In his free time, Leroy enjoyed shooting pool. He was preceded in death by his father. Mary Catherine Lautenschlaeger Mary Catherine Lautenschlaeger of rural route Cuba, Missouri was born November 28, 1921 at New Castle, England to John and Mary Ellen (Smith) Johnson. She passed away Sunday, January 13, 2008 at the age of 86 years. She came to make her home in the United States in 1946 and settled at Swiss, Missouri. She worked on the assembly line at various shoe companies in the area and later was an aide at Gasconade Manor Nursing Home. In May of 1944 she was united in marriage to Elmer Ralph Lautenschlaeger and to this union four children were born. She enjoyed reading, especially poetry and embroidery work. She was fond of baseball and her favorite team was the St. Louis Cardinals and would cheer on her beloved Willie McGee and Ozzie Smith. Mary was a member of Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church and was active within the Parish. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers; one sister and one grandchild. She is survived by a son, John Lautenschlaeger and wife Lillie of Pontiac, Illinois; three daughters, Margaret Lenzie and husband Richard of Tucson, Arizona, Mary Malone and husband Michael of Fulton, Missouri and Darlene Blankenship and husband Theodore of rural Cuba, Missouri; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Daisy Thresa Marlow Daisy Thresa Marlow of Leasburg, Missouri, was born December 6, 1929 at Festus, Missouri to Alex and Lucille (Allen) Dyle. She passed away Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the Missouri Baptist Hospital of Sullivan at the age of 78 years, one month and 13 days. She lived in the Festus area until her marriage to Floyd Marlow when they then made their home in St. Louis. Floyd preceded her in death in 1974. Daisy had worked part-time in the food catering trade and later was employed at the Baden Community Center serving meals-on-wheels. She came to live in the Leasburg, Missouri area the past two years to be closer to her sons. She is survived by two sons, Jody Marlow of Leasburg, Missouri and Larry Marlow and wife Leona also of Leasburg, Missouri; three grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Daniel Dwain Monroe Daniel Dwain Monroe of Linn, Missouri was born on Tuesday, July 7, 1953 in Jefferson City, Missouri to Howard Trenton Monroe and Neva Doreen Clark Monroe. He passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at Cuba Manor at the age of 54 years, 6 months and 19 days. Daniel lived most of his life in Linn, Missouri and retired from Missouri Department of Transportation after 34 years where he was a bridge detailer. He was an artist and enjoyed woodworking, photography, especially the outdoors where he was deeply religious through nature. He loved watching birds and animals and was extremely patriotic. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Virginia Turner. Harold Eddie Murray Harold Eddie Murray of Steelville, Missouri, was born on Thursday, July 28, 1938 in Salem, Missouri to Harold G. Murray and Dora Helen Duckworth Murray. He passed away in his home on Sunday, January 20, 2008 at the age of 69 years, 5 months and 23 days. Harold married Iretta Watson in July 1959 in Gladden, Missouri and to this union five children were born. He worked for the lead mines in Bixby, Missouri for several years as an electrician. After retirement he enjoyed square dancing, attending auctions and gospel music programs. He liked spending time on his computer, playing games, e-mailing friends and making home movies. He was preceded in death by his father; wife and an infant great grandchild. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Republic, Missouri and of the Owensville Moose Lodge. Phillips of Sullivan, Missouri was born November 15, 1926 at Bourbon, Missouri to Rufus Allen and Ruth Jane (Pratt) Graddy. She passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 8 days. After graduation from Sullivan High School, Hilda was united in marriage to Murrel C. Phillips at St. Louis, Missouri and to this union six children were born. Hilda was employed in various jobs in the St. Louis area and in the last 11 years of her working career, worked for R.W. Rebuilders of St. Louis. She and Murrel then moved back to Leasburg, Missouri and eventually Sullivan where Murrel died in 1997. Hilda enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, collecting Avon, was an avid coupon clipper and was fond of gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, James. She is survived by three sons, David Phillips and wife Denise of High Ridge, Missouri, Robert Phillips of St. Louis, Missouri and Steven Phillips of Sullivan, Missouri; two daughters Janet Dillon of Crestwood, Missouri and Mary Gossage and husband William of Arnold, Missouri; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Sanazaro, Sr. Andrew “Andy” J. Sanarazo, Sr. of Cuba, Missouri was born Saturday, July 31, 1926 at St. Louis, Missouri to the union of Julius Sanazaro and Esterina (nee Rivolta) Sanazara and left from this life on Monday, January 21, 2008 at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 21 days. Andy was united in marriage to Betty Riley in St. Louis, Missouri and to this union five children were born. Andy served his country during WWII as a Private First Class in the United States Army Air Force from 1944 until 1947. He was the founder and President of Meramec Electrical Products, which started in 1968. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church for over 50 years. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, was on the Emergency Planning Commission (when it first started in Cuba), Past President of the former Cuba Optimist Club, member of the Athletic Association and was a Boy Scout Leader for the Cuba area. Andy enjoyed being a Ham Radio Operator. This gave him the opportunity to talk to people all over the world and to even help people in their time of need. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and even a game of poker, but what was always most important to him was his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; other family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Betty Sanazaro; five children, Christy Moreland, Andy Sanazaro, Jr., Nick and wife Cate Sanazaro, Carolyn Sanazaro and Dan and wife Carolyn Sue Sanazaro all of Cuba, Missouri; one sister, Virginia M. Richards (nee Swanner) on September 12, 1922 in Knoxville, Tennessee and passed away Friday, January 25, 2008 in Cuba, Missouri at the age of 85 years, 4 months and 13 days. Dorothy was united in marriage to Hamner W. “Scotty” Scott on April 27, 1946 in Nashville, Tennessee and to this union two children were born. Dorothy retired in 1986 after many years of faithful service as a secretary at Cuba City Hall. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cuba, where she had served as a Deacon. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, playing cards, going to the boat, word search books, shopping, matching shoes and purses. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, James R. Richards, Jr. and Carroll Richards. She is survived by her daughter, Carole Ann Scott of Cuba, Missouri; son, Lee and wife Zandra Scott of San Jose, California; grandson, James Russell Scott; special niece, Patricia Cook of Paw Paw, Michigan; special nephew, Marvin Richards of Beverly, New Jersey; other relatives and friends. Smith was born October 10, 1907, to Benjamin F. and Elizabeth (Richardson) Smith and passed away in St. James, Missouri on January 22, 2008 at the age of 100 years. Elva served the US Army, then went to the Air Force and also served as a Merchant Marine and fought in WWII. He earned the Merchant Marine Emblem, Pacific War Zone Bar and the Mediterranean-Middle East War Zone Bar. He was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star and the Masonic Lodge in Cuba, Missouri. He was also a member of VFW Post #7147 in Cuba which several years ago was renamed in his honor, the American Legion and a member of the First Baptist Church in Cuba, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Ruth and Goldie; son, Richard Everett and two brothers, Everett and Lowell “Buster” Smith. He is survived by daughter, Elva Jean Lewis of St. James, Missouri; son, William Arnicar of Texas; step son, Bill May of Leasburg, Missouri; sister, Bee Cherry of Springfield, Missouri; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Walter Elmer Spindler Walter Elmer Spindler of Stanton, Missouri, was born on April 3, 1922 in Sullivan, Missouri to Walter and Sarah (nee Reeves) Spindler.  He passed away Thursday, January 17, 2008 at the age of 85 years. He honorably served his country in the USAF. He married Dorothy Randleman on November 15, 1942 in Stanton, Missouri and together they had four children. Walter retired from Hill Behan Lumber after 31 years and continued to enjoy woodworking into retirement. He was easy going and loved to fish and hunt. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brother, Alfred and a sister, Barbara Sue.
