MO Local Obituaries for the Week of Jan. 31, 2002 Edith May Coppedge Edith May Coppedge (nee Payne) was born Tuesday, January 14, 1908 in Steelville, Mo. to the late William Edward Payne and Ella May Westover Payne and departed this life Saturday, January 19, 2002 at the Gibbs Care Center in Steelville, Mo. at the age of 94 years and 5 days. Edith married James Whitmire Hammond on May 23, 1936 and he passed away in 1971. She later married William James Coppedge in 1973 and he passed away on December 11, 1984. Edith accepted the Lord and was a member of the Centerpoint Baptist Church in Steelville, Mo. She was a hard worker; she enjoyed tending her flowers and was kept young by keeping up with Tina. Edith was preceded in death by her husbands, James Whitmire Hammond, and William James Coppedge, her daughter Vicki Lynn Hammond Topping and her stepson William Coppedge, and her three brothers Ken, Harry, and Gerald Payne, her sister-in-law Reable Payne. Those who remain to mourn her passing are her loving son Michael Hammond and wife Donna of Centralia, Illinois; her daughter Tina Coppedge of Steelville, Mo.; her grandchildren Jerry Hammond of Florissant, Mo.; Jane Hammond of Bonita Springs, FL; John Hammond of Los Angeles, California; Julia Hammond of Centralia, Illinois; and great-grandson Justin Hammond of Belleville, Illinois; one sister-in-law Dixie Payne of Steelville, Mo.; nieces, cousins, relatives and friends all who will fondly remember and sadly miss Edith May Coppedge. Lytle "Junior" England Lytle England was born Sunday, January 30, 1921 in Cherryville, Mo. to the late Lytle Franklin England and Tressie Ada Martin England and passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at the Beverly Health Care Center in Sullivan, Mo. at the age of 80 years, 11 months, and 23 days. Lytle entered the United States Army on October 26, 1942 and active duty on November 9, 1942 serving his Country faithfully during World War II participating in the Rome-Amo, No Apennines, and the Po Valley Campaigns. He received 3 bronze stars; Good Conduct Medal, Dist. Unit Bade, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, 2 Overseas Bars, and the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on November 6, 1945. Lytle married Mary Lou Westover December 25, 1946 in Steelville, Mo. at the home of the Rev. Uncle Sam Roper in front of his fireplace, and to this union 5 children were born. Lytle accepted the Lord and was a member of the Steelville Presbyterian Church. He was a past member of the VFW in Steelville, Mo. Lytle was a hard worker working in the timber industry, sawmills, Brown Shoe Company, and last at the Fisherman Dude Ranch Fish Hatchery. He enjoyed mechanic work, working on his truck. He loved his family and was very proud of his grandchildren. Lytle was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Jack and Glen England, his half-sister Nina Waller, son-in-law Wayne Henry, two brother-in-laws Bernard "Doc" Halbert, and Lee Waller. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his loving wife Mary Lou England of the home in Steelville, Mo.; his children Terry England and wife Sharon, Jack England, Nancy Henry, Martha Sellers, all of Steelville, Mo. and Barbara Britton and husband Mike of Meta, Mo. Betty Kay Kientzel Betty Kay Kientzel was born in St. Charles, Mo. on October 18, 1959 to Edward Paul Steele and Grace Taylor Steele. She passed away Sunday, January 20, 2002 in her home, at the age of 42 years, 3 months and 2 days. Betty worked several years as a waitress before moving to Rolla. Some of her hobbies were writing, playing piano, swimming, boating, and fishing. Those who preceded her in death were her parents, twin brother Paul Edward Steele, sister Roberta Schulz, and an infant son. Those who remain to mourn her passing are her three children, Angela Christine Carter of St. Charles, Mo., Krystal Kay Kientzel of Cuba, Mo. and Kyle Thomas Kientzel of Steelville, Mo.; brother and sisters John D. Myrleen McKenzie Myrleen McKenzie nee Dull was born at Rush Hill, Mo. on March 1, 1923 to Harry and Edna Goodrich Dull. She passed away on January 23, 2002 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 22 days. Myrleen was united in marriage to John P. McKenzie on June 19, 1943 in Mexico, Mo. and to this union two children were born. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Cuba, Mo. since moving here in 1985. She enjoyed spending time with friends at the Senior Center where she ate lunch every day. Those who preceded her in death were her parents, husband John, one brother Maurice Dull and one sister Lucille Morgan Hayden. Those who remain to mourn her passing are her children: Wayne McKenzie and wife Linda of Cedar Hill, Mo., and Linda Absher and husband Barrye of Midlothian, Virginia; five grandchildren, Aaron, Brian, Carrie, and Danielle McKenzie and Lisa R. Mark Merrill Meyer Mark Merrill Meyer was born in St. Louis, Mo. to Donald Meyer and Ettmae Coons Meyer on April 20, 1956. He passed away January 24, 2002 at Arlington Villa Nursing Home, Arlington, Texas at the age of 45 years, 9 months and 4 days. Mark married Sandra Kay Tilley on June 13, 1981 in St. Louis, Mo. They moved to Allen, Texas where they made their home for 15 years. While living there, Mark was employed as an equipment operator. His hobbies were fishing and hunting. Those who preceded him in death were his grandparents, father, and infant grandson. (Ernie) Payne Ernest E. (Ernie) Payne of High Ridge, Missouri, passed away January 21, 2002, at his home. He was born on May 23, 1921, in Cherryville, Missouri, the son of the late Cornelius V. and May Alice (nee McWhorter) Payne. He was 80 years, 7 months and 28 days of age. On June 17, 1940, in Salem, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Edna L. (nee Clonts) Payne who survives. He is also survived by: his children, Darlene and husband Lester Weatherby of Sullivan, Missouri, Ernest and wife Mary Payne of Marion County, Arkansas, Jim and wife Charoltte Payne of House Springs, Missouri and Diane and husband Howard Fields of High Ridge, Missouri; by 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Four sisters, Addie Coleman of Steelville, Missouri, Bertha Payne of Steelville, Missouri, Vergie Benton of Hillsboro, Missouri and Marie Waller of St. Louis County, Missouri. Ernest Payne was a life member of Steelville, Missouri VFW Post and was a member of the machinist union. He was also a Master Mechanic for Wetterau Food Incorporation and was a great electrician. In his spare time he loved coon hunting and had been known to hunt all night long and enjoyed fishing. Visitation was held at Chapel Hill Mortuary in Cedar Hill, Missouri from 2-9 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2002. Funeral services were held at Chapel Hill Mortuary at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2002. Interment followed at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Cedar Hill, Missouri. Elsie Mabel Scott Elsie Mabel Scott nee Mason was born Monday, April 19, 1915, a daughter of the late Charles Leonard Mason and Cora Edith (Brown) Mason. She entered eternal rest Saturday, January 19, 2002, at the Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Sullivan, Mo., at the age of 86 years, and 9 months. Elsie was united in marriage to Freeman Austin Scott, son of Floyd A. Scott and Nina Mae Scott Reeves (nee Walker), June 14, 1935 in Steelville by Rev. Maxwell, pastor of First Baptist Church. Her father and his brother attended them. They enjoyed over sixty-five years together before his death, May 25, 2001. She worked, while raising their for children, two sons and two daughters, in local businesses, Steelville Supply Store, Greigs Super Market, Brown Shoe Company, the Soldiers Home in St. James, and alongside Freeman on their farm. One of her hobbies was making quilts. They attended the Free Will Baptist Church in Cuba, Mo. When she and Freeman moved to be near their daughter, Nina, they became members of Lesterville First Baptist Church. Her Christianity was something she lived at all times as a woman of faith and a faithful friend. Among those who remain to mourn her passing are two daughters, Nina and husband Doug Fitzgerald of Middlebrook, Mo., Minnie and husband John Crisan of Louisiana, Mo.; two sons, Freeman A. Scott, Jr. and wife Cynthia of Kilgore, Texas and Donald Scott and wife Judy of Maryland Heights, Mo. Two sisters-in-law, Virgie Mason of Belgrade, Mo. and Pansy Scott of Steelville, Mo.; eleven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Calvin, Cecil and Malcom Mason and three sisters, May Miner and husband Virgil, Tressie Schweinfurter and husband Andrew, and Naomi Mason, brother-in-law, Charles Walter Scott and sister-in-law, Sibyl Campbell. Donald Ray Skaggs Donald "Don" Ray Skaggs was born Wednesday, May 20, 1942, in Steelville, Mo., a son of the late Rev. Herman Skaggs and Hildred E. (Caringer) Skaggs. He departed this life Saturday, January 19, 2002, at the Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Sullivan, Mo., at the age of 59 years, 7 months and 29 days. Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Bill Moede of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one grandson, Luke Moede; one granddaughter, Ashylan Moede also of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a special friend, Judy Gander of Eureka, Mo. Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2002, in the Britton Chapel with Rev. Harry White officiating. He was eulogized by Tammy Moore, Joy Baumbach and Bill Moede. Musical selections were provided by Wendy Clouse. Committal prayers and interment was in Shoal Creek Cemetery, Steelville, Mo. Serving as pallbearers were Pete Buckert, David, Mike and Steve Skaggs, George Rathgeber and Allan Sellers. Honorary pallbearers were Bryan Baumbach, Luke Moede and Dave Skaggs. Jennie Leota Steuber Jennie Leota Steuber of Cuba, Mo. was born on August 11, 1904 at Leasburg, Mo. to the union of James Louis Fulton and Jennie Ethel Fulton nee Diresbach and passed away on January 20, 2002 at Cuba, Mo. at the age of 97 years, 5 months and 9 days. On November 12, 1927 Jennie was united in marriage to Homer Carlisle at Leasburg, Mo. Two sons, James and Edward, and one daughter, Wilma, were born to this union. Homer preceded Jennie in death on October 5, 1947. In January of 1950 Jennie was united in marriage to George Steuber at Cuba, Mo. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1981. Jennie was a homemaker and a long time resident of Crawford County. She was a member of the Leasburg American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Wilma E. Carlisle; two sisters Glen Evans and Sarah Stuckey, and two brothers, Louis Fulton and Thomas Fulton. Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her two sons James A. Carlisle and wife Barbara and Edward Carlisle and wife Cleo; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends. Jennie was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister, good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Jennie Leota (Fulton) Steuber was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. where an American Legion Auxiliary service was held on Friday, January 25, 2002 at 7 p.m. by the Leasburg American Legion Auxiliary. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 26, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the Britton Chapel, Cuba, Mo. with Rev. Charles Ledbetter officiating. Interment was in the Lea Cemetery, Leasburg, Mo.
