Bonnot of Springfield, Missouri was born July 23, 1952 in Jefferson City, Missouri to Julius and Betty Bonnot and passed away January 23, 2017 at the age of 64 years. J.J. was an avid fan of NASCAR. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. J.J. also enjoyed going fishing with his brother Mike. He was known for his fun sense of humor and was a true joy to be around. Being blessed with many skills, J.J. worked as an electrician and also other general construction. He was preceded in death by his father, Julius Bonnot; and a brother, Steve Brusherd. Donald Joseph Borofsky Donald Joseph Borofsky of St. James, Missouri was born in Lincoln, Illinois to Joseph and Sally Borofsky on November 25, 1928 and passed away on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the age of 88 years. He graduated from Lincoln High School and then received a Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Don served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. He attained the rank of corporal and served in the Korean War. During the war, he managed equipment parts in Korea. It was during his Korean War experience that Don decided to pursue a career in social work. He later earned a master's degree in social work at the University of Missouri-Columbia. While working as a social worker in the state of Virginia in 1955 Don met and married his wife of 61 years, Eileen Weakley of Powhatan, Virginia. In 1956 Don worked as a Juvenile Probation Officer in York, Pennsylvania. In 1957 he was employed as a social worker for Catholic Charities in New Orleans, Louisana. From 1959-1994 Don worked at Boys Town of Missouri serving as Director of Admissions and Director of Social Services. He was in charge of Joint Commission Standards and enjoyed participating in the annual Boys Town trail rides to St. Louis, Missouri. He worked with and helped 100s of boys during his tenure at Boys Town. Don enjoyed sports and particularly loved to cheer for his beloved World Series winning Chicago Cubs. He was an avid reader of books concerning the Civil War, WWII and the Korean War. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and gardening. He also enjoyed the music of Elvis Presley and country and western-style singers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Sally Borofsky; and two brothers, John Borofsky and Edward Borofsky. Bullock of St. James, Missouri was born in Redding, England on March 22, 1934 to Alfred and Florence (Burchhill) Green and passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the age of 82 years. Gwendolynn told stories about growing up during WWII and how she and her family spend many hours in the bomb shelters. She talked about how the family survived on a very small allotment of food ration stamps. It was during this time that Gwendolynn met the love of her life, a soldier named Jack Bullock who was stationed near her home. On September 6, 1952 Gwendolynn married Jack Bullock. Coming to America was somewhat of an adjustment. She fondly remembered the first trip to the grocery store where she could buy whatever and however much without a ration stamp. Gwendolynn loved The Queen and Royal family and watched and listened to all she could about news from her homeland. She loved to sew and make crafts, so when the time came for her to get a career what better than at California Manufacturing a job where she could sew all day making coats. She met Ann Koeber who was also from England. They had arrived in the United States about the same time, both living in St. James, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Florence Green; son, Larry Bullock and daughter-in-law, Lorna; grandson, Steve Bullock Jr.; and sisters, Ivy Randall and Elsie McGuire. Ruth married Norman Cartwright in Corinth, Mississippi on June 24, 1953 and they were happily married for 63 years. Ruth worked for three years as a schoolteacher at the Dent-Phelps R-3 School. Her primary work consisted of serving in ministry as a pastor's wife for 63 years. She was a talented musician and enjoyed playing the accordion, piano and organ. Other interests included growing beautiful roses, traveling and gospel music. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Elsie Kitchen; an infant daughter, Cindy Cartwright; and one brother, Edwin Kitchen. She grew up, attended and graduated from school in Pleasanton, California. She married Bernie Hughes and four children were born. The Hughes family moved between California and Missouri several times, settling in Missouri in 1974. Barbara was employed in the Heath Care Industry for a time and later as a bookkeeper in the family business, B&B Package in Steelville, Missouri. Bernie preceded Barbara in death in 1984. She later married Chester Dondero in 1994 and they resided in Sullivan, Missouri before his death on May 23, 2008. Barbara enjoyed flower gardening, reading, and playing cards. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Marsha King; and two sisters, Inez Jackson and Isabella Sparkman. Verniece Fredia Abney Engelhardt Verniece Fredia Abney Engelhardt was born February 14, 1924 at Viburnum, Missouri to Porter and Letha Parks Abney and passed away Friday, January 27, 2017 at the age of 92 years, 11 months and 13 days. On February 22, 1946, Verniece married Raymond Wagner in St. Louis, Missouri. He passed away on June 29, 1956. On June 22, 1959, Verniece married Junies Engelhardt in Belleville, Illinois. He passed away on May 1, 2003. In her younger days, Verniece worked at Ely Walker in Salem, Missouri and at Prince Gardner in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a faithful member of the Steelville First Assembly of God Church. Verniece was very gifted in her talents and embroidered, crocheted, quilted and decorated cakes. He was united in marriage to Lois J. Richter on July 24, 1959 and two children were born to this union. Travis worked for General Motors as a painter in the auto body department. He was very talented in his job and he traveled all over the United States trouble shooting for General Motors. They lived in several states before deciding to retire in St. James, Missouri. She retired from Fashion Shoe/Meramec Industries on June 1, 1983 as a master shoe trimmer. Even though she had reached her 99th birthday, life was all too short for Nannie. She had been looking forward to her Centenary celebration. Her beloved Dr. Modad had told her that he would attend her 100th birthday party and she was excited at the thought of seeing him! She loved being mom and spoiling her boys. In her spare time she enjoyed fishing, boating, word search and jigsaw puzzles, exercising, quilting and flower gardening. Elneda Steen Manion Elneda Steen Manion of Sullivan, Missouri was born on February 24, 1920 in Sullivan, Missouri to Leslie and Ruth (Dorson) Cain and passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 at the age of 96 years. Elneda's mother passed away at an early age and her grandmother Cain and Aunt Jane Cain raised her. She attended and graduated from Sullivan High School. On January 5, 1943 Elneda married Charles Steen in Union, Missouri and three children were born to their marriage. Elneda was employed by the shoe factory until it closed and then she worked for Dr. Robert Crawford as his receptionist until she retired. Later in life, Elneda married Jim Manion. Elneda was a member of the Sullivan Chapter of Eastern Star #105 and Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan, Missouri where she was the oldest surviving female member. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Ruth Cain; husbands, Charles E. Robert married Diane Smith on April 20, 1982 and to this union two sons were born. He spent most of his life as a carpenter building Kentucky Fried Chicken structures and more. He was a member of the Carpenters Union. He last worked as a custodian for Cuba High School and was known and loved by the students and staff. "Skeeter" Moreland was born December 6, 1936 in St. Charles, Missouri to William D. and Grace (Weaver) Moreland and passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at the age of 80 years. He attended schools in the St. James, Missouri area. Skeeter enlisted in the United States Navy on May 3, 1954 and was stationed in Japan for a short time. He received his honorable discharge on May 2, 1962. On June 5, 1985 he married Judy Chard in Rock Port, Missouri, where they made their home to the present time. Skeeter owned and operated Moreland Logging for over 50 years. In the mid 1970's, Skeeter purchased the Rock Port Army Store where he sold surplus items and clothing for 10 years. He enjoyed gardening with Judy, traveling, playing cards, fishing with Ransom, Brogan and Mikaila and most especially playing with his grandkids and great grandkids. He also enjoyed drinking coffee daily at Our Place with all his close friends. She was a very active member of Third Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri and First Baptist Church in Rolla, Missouri and was active in the Women's Missionary Union for over 50 years. She was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching NASCAR. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Rita Smith; first husband, Virlyn Revis Burdett in 1995; one son, Steven Burdett in 1991; daughter-in-law, Donna Burdett; and one brother, Eugene Smith. Charolette Helen Potts Charolette Helen Potts of St. James, Missouri was born in High Gate, Missouri on July 11, 1931 to Iver Chris and Hulda Katy Spurgeon Skouby and passed away on January 23, 2017 at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 12 days. She married Harry Lee Underwood Potts on April 16, 1948 in High Gate, Missouri. Charolette was know by her family and friends as "Grandma." She loved to crocheting and embroidery. She loved to garden, and to grow flowers, and loved to watch birds, but did not have much love for the cats that scared her birds. She enjoyed camping and fishing on the Gasconade River. Charolette was a native of High Gate, Missouri and enjoyed all the High Gate reunions. She was a very hard worker. She sewed many quilts for her family. She was united in marriage to Erwin Robinson and to this union two children were born. After his passing she later married Donald Rayburn Robinson and they had 10 children. She enjoyed crocheting, working puzzles, painting and was an avid reader. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Erwin Leroy Robinson; eight sisters; and seven brothers. Mary Roberts Roper Mary Roberts Roper was born on February 26, 1918 in Steelville, Missouri to Earl E. and Norma Thompson Roberts and passed away on January 26, 2017 at the age of 98 years and 11 months. Mary was a graduate of Steelville High School in 1935 and during World War II taught there for a few years. She graduated from Drury College with a degree in business, later earning a masters degree in Teaching Secondary Mathematics from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. For over 30 years she taught algebra, trigonometry, geometry and calculus at Lamar High School, Lamar, Missouri; The College Laboratory School at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas; and Webster Groves High School in Webster Groves, Missouri. Mary was a member of The Crossing Church in Columbia, Missouri. She always volunteered in countless ways, in living her Christian faith. She thus was an advocate for those who needed help and assistance, volunteering in the Welfare To Work program and the Stephen Ministry. In her younger years Mary was an excellent pianist (she retained her piano to the end of her life) and was a lifetime lover of music, the performing arts, bridge and travel. Her travel group, The Brits, enjoyed several wonderful trips together to England, Ireland and Scotland. In her 70s she bought a bus pass to see, and stay in, the best of America's national parks, all on her own. She was also a very good athlete, playing golf with her friends and family to the age of 90. Her golfing exploits included making a hole in one at age 86. She also was an impressive senior athlete, as she won many gold medals by beating her competition in swimming, golf and weightlifting in the St. Louis Senior Olympics. She was a lifelong strong Democrat. Mary had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor. Mary treasured her time with each and every one of her grand- children and great-grandchildren. They will always fondly remember their amazing experiences with her. Her strength was augmented by her successfully living through the Great Depression and World War II. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Norma Thompson; her brother, James Thompson Roberts; and her sister, Carol Roberts Pettit. She is survived by her three children, Bob (Ellen) Roper of Columbia, Missouri, Carol (Richard) Caruthers of Rockport, Texas and Martha Roper (Peter) Scales of Manchester, Missouri; grand- children Joanna Shear, Jason Shear, Chad Caruthers, Cara Caruthers Villar, and Dane Roper; eight great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Armin Henry Rutz Armin Henry Rutz was born March 7, 1925, in Oak Hill to Lewis F. and Ruth (Simpson) Rutz and passed away January 21, 2017 at the age of 91 years. He married Beulah Enke of Bem, Missouri on May 21, 1949. He was a World War II veteran serving with the 13th Army Replacement Division in Hawaii from 1944-46. He was a member of VFW post 6133, having served seven years as Post Commander; member of Owensville Masonic Lodge #624 AF&AM 1953-2017 and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason; held past memberships in the Owensville Gun Club and Moose Lodge; served one term as city Alderman and 25 years as an Owensville volunteer fireman. He was a long time member of St. John's United Church of Christ at Bem, Missouri changing his membership to the Christian Church in 2007. He was an active participant in the Owensville community. He and Beulah made Owensville, Missouri their lifelong home. He was a woodworker owning and operating the "Rutz Cabinet Shop" from 1948-1966. After selling the shop he worked for Great Plains Gas until 1972 followed by employment with Beaufort Transfer Co. retiring after 15 years as a teamster union truck driver. Armin enjoyed working in his woodworking shop at home and never missed an opportunity to hunt or fish. He and friends were even highlighted in the Missouri Conservationist in a story about squirrel hunting with muzzle loading rifles. He loved his quiet time in his cabin on the river and socializing on the POET's farm which he, sons and good friends bought and formed a cooperation so that they would always have a place to hunt. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah; brothers, Dalless and Lewis; and sister, Okel Tayloe. She was a 1955 graduate of John F. Hodge High School in St. James, Missouri. She married Gary D. Scott on August 20, 1965 in Springfield, Missouri. They moved to Chanute, Kansas in 1973. She was service manager at Walmart in Chanute for 23 years. She is survived by her husband, Gary of the home; two sons, William H. Scott of Chanute, Kansas and Carl A. Scott and wife Jen of Coral Springs, Florida; one daughter, Susan Howard and husband Warren of St. James, Missouri; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas Laycock Jr. of Cuba, Missouri and Tim Laycock and wife Jane of St. James, Missouri; one sister Jayne Stites of Rolla, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Mildred L. Sedgwick Mildred L. (Norris) Sedgwick of Las Vegas, Nevada was born April 23, 1939 to Harry and Fern (Pitts) Norris of St. James, Missouri and passed away on January 24, 2017 at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 24 days. On December 27, 1961 she married Joe Sedgwick. "Millie" was an active person. She loved to bake, especially desserts. She loved her job. When she was in real estate she had a big smile to greet everyone she met. She loved to write songs, mostly about her family. Her hospice nurse sang and played the guitar. She took one of the songs and recorded it, put it on a CD and sent it to Millie's family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe in August 2012; parents, Harry and Fern Norris; one son, Mike Sedgwick; three brothers, Louis G. Norris, Richard Norris and Lawrence Norris; twin sisters, Betty Nelson and Bertia Ezell. John E. Sieger John E. Sieger of St. James, Missouri, formerly of Cuba, Missouri, was born Sunday, July 24, 1938 at St. Louis, Missouri to Erwin and Fannie (nee Niehaus) Sieger and passed away on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the age of 78 years. John proudly served in the United States Marie Corp from August 1, 1958 until June 22, 1961. John earned the rank of Corporal (E-4) on January 1, 1961 and he also received the Good Conduct Medal. John served in the Marine Corps Reserve until June 30, 1964. John worked at the Amax Lead Mines located in Bixby and Boss, Missouri from 1969 until 1983 as a driller. John spent hours and days making things out of wood and then selling what he made. For many years John traveled the country going to swap meets. He would buy old cars fix them up and sell them. John bought a 1938 dark green wood paneled Ford Station Wagon that was originally owned by the Lemp family. John's motto was "Buy junk, sale rare antiques." He was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Fannie Sieger. He is survived by his half-brother, Norman and wife Renate Sieger of Sacramento, California; two nephews, Scott Sieger and family and Michael Sieger and family, all of California; "Goddaughter" Nikki and husband Brian Lohman of Hazelwood, Missouri; like a nephew (cousin), Kyle and wife Trisha Hoefel of Dardenne Prairie, Missouri; like a brother (cousin), Marvin W. and wife Briann Hoefel of O'Fallon, Missouri; special neighbors, Bob and Darlene Mullen; friends from the car clubs; other relatives and friends. She was united in marriage to Wensten Spurgeon and to this union three children were born. Betty was a homemaker and loved taking care of her children.
