Edith Leona Callahan
Edith (Sis) (Dee) Mosher Callahan nee Hughes of St. James passed
away Sunday, January 30, 2005. She was 81 years of age.
Edith was born on February 15, 1923 to Fred and Hazel Fern
(McDonald) Hughes.
Edith was united in marriage to Cordell (Corkey) William Callahan
on September 28, 1991 at Steelville, Missouri.
Edith Callahan is survived by her husband, Cordell (Corkey)
Callahan of St. James, Missouri; stepdaughters, Joyce Disandro and
husband Kenneth Schuch of Belle, Missouri and Paula Bryant and
husband Chester of Cherryville, Missouri. Brother, Herman Hughes of
Cuba, Missouri and sister-in-law Jaunita Hughes of Cuba, Missouri,
along with many special grandchildren, great grandchildren and great
great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Hazel
Hughes, one brother, Raymond Hughes and one sister, Ruby Beatt.
Edith was a supervisor at the California Manufacturing Co. in St.
James for many years.
Visitation was Monday, January 31, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. at the
Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri.
Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 1,
2005 at the Jones Funeral Home Chapel in St. James, Missouri.
Interment was in the High Gate Baptist Church Cemetery, near St.
James, Missouri with Rod Farthing officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home
in St. James, Missouri.
William Earl Downing, Sr.
William Earl Downing, Sr. of Cuba, Missouri was born on August 21, 1936
in Berryman, Missouri to the union of William Paris and Edna Irene (Ennis)
Downing and passed away on January 25, 2005 in Cuba, Missouri at the age of
68 years, 5 months and 8 days.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; one son, William Earl
Downing, Jr.; one brother Robert Downing; and one sister Juanita
Downing.
He was inducted into the Navy of the United States of America and
was honorably discharged on October 13, 1962. He was also a member
of the local VFW Cuba Chapter and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his two
daughters, Virginia Young and husband Clay, and Debra Ware and
husband Rodney; three brothers, Paul Downing and wife Alice Faye,
George Downing, and Larry Downing; two sisters, Mary Poverud and
friend Guido Schinigo and Katherine Minke and husband Len.
Seven grandchildren, Clay Young and wife Shauna, Jason Young,
Susan, Sasha, Siera Downing, and Samantha and Micki Watering; three
great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and
many friends.
Bill was a devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle,
cousin, and good friend to all who knew him and will be sadly
missed.
William Downing, Sr. was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of
Cuba, Missouri where funeral services were held on Friday, January
28, 2005 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Interment was
in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.
All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral
Home of Cuba, Missouri.
Carroll M. Gregory
Carroll M. Gregory of Cuba, Missouri was born in Steelville,
Missouri on November 6, 1918 to John Marvin Gregory and Myrtle Ione
Abrams. He passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2005 at the age of
86 years, 2 months, and 16 days.
Carroll served his country honorably in the United States Navy
during WWII. He later married Bea C. Vincent in St. Louis, Missouri
on May 24, 1947 and to this union three daughters were born.
He retired from McDonnell-Douglas after working there for 32
years. He was a member of the International Association Machinist &
Aerospace Workers Local Lodge 837, also the VFW Post 7147.
Carroll was active in Lackland Road Baptist Church where he sang
in the choir and a Sunday School teacher of young boys. He later
became ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church, Cuba, Missouri
where he was an active member. Carroll loved being in the woods
squirrel and rabbit hunting. He took a lot of pride in tending his
vegetable garden especially raising tomatoes. It was important to
him to always have a dog.
After retirement he bought and serviced vending machines. Carroll
most of all loved being with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Albert (Bus)
Gregory, Raymond Gregory; infant sister Mary Gregory, sisters Lee
Dortch, and Olive Bright.
Those who remain to mourn his passing are his wife Bea Gregory of
Cuba, Missouri; daughters Linda Van Eaton and husband Bill of
Monett, Missouri, Deborah Jesse and husband Michael of Manchester,
Missouri, Carol Gregory and husband Felix Rivera of Altadena,
California.
Sister, Jackie Richardson and husband Don of Wildwood, Missouri;
sisters-in-law Lorene Modglin of Anna, Illinois, Opal Miles of
Carterville, Illinois, Ruth Vincent of Owensville, Kentucky.
Grandchildren, Jason Van Eaton and wife Mindy, Kyndall Nixon and
husband Jerry, Emily and Ellis Rivera; great grandchildren Reagan
and Clayton Van Eaton, Anna Laura and Alexandria Nixon; nieces,
nephews, cousins and many friends.
Visitation was Tuesday, January 25, 2005 from 5-8 p.m. at Hutson
Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri.
Funeral Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday, January, 26, 2005 at
Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri with Brother Delbert Bishop and
Brother Bob Houchins officiating.
Interment was at the Meramec Hills Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri.
Pallbearers were David Beard, Lawrence Elrod, Marvin Good, Carl
Price, Michael Jesse, and Felix Rivera. Honorary pallbearers were Ed
Hughes, Les Murdock, Buddy Sizemore, and Roy Vinyard.
All arrangements under the direction of Hutson Funeral Home,
Cuba, Missouri.
Noel N. Howdeshell
Noel N. Howdeshell of Cuba, Missouri was born on Saturday,
November 22, 1920 in Cherryville, Missouri to Eldon E. Howdeshell
and Rose Parrett Howdeshell. He passed away on Saturday, January 22,
2005 at the age of 84 years and 2 months.
Noel was baptized in Dry Creek at the age of 16 years, and then
later baptized with his children into the Lutheran Church. He served
his country honorably in the United States Army following World War
II. He married Helen G. Gray on August 6, 1966 in St. Louis,
Missouri performed by the Bro. Paul Conaway.
Noel retired from working as a sander operator with Missouri
Metal in St. Louis and was a member of the Machinist Union.
Noel and Helen moved to Cuba, Missouri in 1986 where they made
their home and also became members of First Baptist Church, Cuba,
Missouri. He loved to hunt squirrel even as a young boy using a
slingshot to hunt.
Those who preceded him in death were his parents; infant brother
James; brothers Elbert Parrett, Treffie Hogan, Dwight Howdeshell,
Kenneth Howdeshell; and sister Daphna Callahan.
He is survived by his wife Helen Howdeshell of Cuba, Mo.; son
Bryce Howdeshell and wife Jan of Steelville, Mo.; daughter Elizabeth
Russ and husband Bernie of Overland Park, Kansas; sisters Anna Mae
Biggs and husband Kenneth of Overland, Mo., Ruth Ogles of
Steelville, Mo., Mildred Conaway and husband Paul of Cuba, Mo.,
Juanita Crabtree and husband Donnie of Bridgeton, Mo. and Mary
Lefler of Overland, Mo.; brother-in-law Ellis Gray and wife Betty of
Cherryville, Mo.; sisters-in-law Alameda Campbell of Cuba, Mo. and
Vivian Hogan of Wentzville, Mo.; one grandson Jonathan Scott
Howdeshell of Washington, D.C.; nephews, nieces, cousins and
friends.
Visitation was Monday, January 24, 2005 from 5-8 at Hutson
Funeral Home, Cuba, Mo.
Funeral Services were Tuesday, January 24, 2005 at 10 a.m. at
Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba, Mo., with Bro. Delmar Hutson
officiating. Burial at the Freeman Cemetery, Cherryville, Mo.
All arrangements under the direction of Hutson Funeral Home,
Cuba, Mo.
Esther Ione Long
Esther Ione Long nee Park of Rolla, Missouri was born on
September 28, 1926 in Crawford County, Missouri to the union of
Thomas L. Park and Hulda Enstall Park and passed away on January 27,
2005 at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center of Rolla,
Missouri at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 29 days.
On May 25, 1946 Esther was united in marriage to Robert W. Long
in Steelville, Missouri. Three sons, Robert Kevin, Gregory Park and
William Kelly, and one daughter, Gretchen Ann, were born to this
union. Esther and Robert have been happily married for 58 years.
Esther was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters,
Martha Park, Ethel Weaver and Evelyn Dunlap.
She was a member for thirty years of the First Presbyterian
Church of Rolla, Missouri.
Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her
devoted husband Robert W. Long; three sons, Robert Kevin and wife
Cindy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Gregory Park Long and family of
Houston, Texas and William Kelly Long and wife Deeanne of Rolla,
Missouri; one daughter, Gretchen Ann Boyd and husband Steve of
Kansas City, Missouri; one brother Thomas L. Park of Cuba, Missouri;
one sister Elizabeth Forbes of Rolla, Missouri; eleven
grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends
Esther was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister,
good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed.
Memorial services for Esther Ione Long was held on Tuesday,
February 1, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church of Rolla, Missouri
at 11 a.m. Interment was in the Kinder Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri. All
arrangements under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of
Cuba, Missouri.
Dr. Walter Robert "Mac" McQuillan
Dr. Walter Robert McQuillan of Steelville, Missouri, was born
Tuesday, March 23, 1915, in St. Louis, Missouri, a son of the late
Walter Robert McQuillan, Sr. and Mae Evelyn (Lortz) McQuillan. He
passed away after a short battle with cancer, at Cuba Manor, Cuba,
Missouri and was Fortified with the Sacraments of the Holy Mother
Church on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at the age of 89 years, 10
months and 2 days. He was surrounded by family members when accepted
in the Hands of the Lord.
Dr. McQuillan graduated from St. Louis University, with top
honors, earning him medals for all four years attended. After
graduation he taught physical diagnosis at the old Missouri
Chiropractic College, which later merged with Logan Chiropractic
College. He also was head of the school's clinic for two decades,
and an Alumni of Logan Chiropractic College. At night Dr. McQuillan
saw patients at his office at South Grand Boulevard and Shenandoah
Avenue. In the 1950's, he moved his office to South Grand Boulevard
and Arsenal Street. Dr. McQuillan was in private practice for over
fifty years. He retired in the mid-1970s to Steelville, Missouri. He
served life with dedication as a Chiropractor professor and
lecturer. He was recognized by Logan College with a certificate for
his contributions, as a "Pioneer in Chiropractic" medicine.
He was an accomplished musician, playing the piano professionally
with the Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra and other memorable big bands,
playing also for the enjoyment of family and friends. He loved
having a radio show for many years. His radio theme song was Blue
Moon.
Walter was united in marriage February 10, 1947, at St. Anthony's
Catholic Church, in St. Louis, Missouri, to LaVerne Hapgood. They
have enjoyed over 58 years together. Two sons and two daughters were
born to this union, Robert, Patricia, Susan and Michael.
In addition to his parents, two sisters, Evelyn Bushell and
husband Charles and Roberta Dowling and husband Clem, preceded him
in death.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife,
LaVerne McQuillan of Steelville, Missouri; four children, Robert J.
McQuillan of St. Louis, Missouri, Patricia L. Lee of Rolla,
Missouri, Susan M. McQuillan of Steelville, Missouri and Michael T.
McQuillan of Omaha, Nebraska; seven grandchildren, Sharon
(McQuillan) Trebilcock and husband Michael of Phippsburg, Maine,
Christopher McQuillan and Tricia of Steelville, Missouri, Thomas
Donnell and wife Kathleen of Newburg, Missouri, Matthew Lee and wife
Roxie of Steelville, Missouri, Mark Lee, Trisha Lee, Katie Lee of
Rolla, Missouri.
Great grandchildren, Amanda and Joe Trebilcock, Krista McQuillan,
Bethany Donnell, Matthew, Katie and Karlie Lee; nieces, nephews,
cousins, other relatives and friends. A life was lost, and the Moon
is indeed, "Blue" tonight, as Dr. McQuillan has signed off. Yet
another bright star shines tonight in the heavens. To LaVerne,
"Semper Ditto".
Dr. Walter Robert McQuillan lay in state 4-8 p.m. Thursday,
January 27th and 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. Friday, January 28th Funeral
services were held 10 a.m. Friday, January 29, 2005, in the Britton
Chapel with Rev. Jerry Beers officiating. Musical selections were
provided by pianist, Michael McQuillan, and vocalist, Thomas Donnell
and Matt Lee.
Committal prayers and interment was in Steelville Cemetery,
Steelville, Missouri. Honoring their grandfather as pallbearers were
Thomas Donnell, Mark Lee, Matt Lee and Christopher McQuillan.
Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Britton Funeral Home,
Steelville, Missouri.
Delores Eileen Matchell
Delores Eileen Matchell, nee Unverferth, was born Friday,
December 13, 1930, at St. Louis, Missouri, a daughter of the late
Oscar Bernard Unverferth and Grace (Zahner) Unverferth.
She entered eternal rest Friday, January 28, 2005, at Des Peres,
Missouri, at the age of 74 years, 1 month and 15 days.
At Holy Cross Catholic Church, Cuba, Missouri, in 1961, Delores
was united in marriage to Joseph Matchell. Two sons, Greg and
Patrick and one daughter, Anne, were born to this union.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two
sisters, Olivia Ingebohs and Doris Vogt and husband Tom.
Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her sons, Greg
Matchell and wife Cindy of Union, Missouri and Patrick Matchell and
wife Lula of Lafollette, Tennessee and her daughter, Anne Matchell
of Union, Missouri; one brother Clyde "Bud" Unverferth and wife Jean
of Louisana, Missouri; one sister, Marie Fortenbury, Indianapolis,
Indiana; brother-in-laws and sisters-in-law, Frank Ingebohs of St.
Louis, Missouri, Ray and Pauline Matchell of Cuba, Missouri, John
and Marie Matchell of Bolivar, Missouri.
Five grandchildren, Jeanie Dawn Matchell and Steven Joseph
Matchell of Lafollette, Tennessee, Heather Renee Matchell of Union,
Missouri, Megan Leslie Matchell and Devin Joseph Matchell (twins) of
St. Clair, Missouri; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and
friends who will fondly remember her and sadly miss her.
Delores Eileen Matchell lay in state after 10 a.m. Sunday,
January 30, 2005, at the Britton Bros. Funeral Home, Steelville,
Missouri.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 30, 2005, in
the Britton Chapel with Rev. Jerry Beers officiating.
Committal prayers and interment was in Steelville Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Rick Fortenbury, Frank Ingenbohs, Carl
Ingenbohs, Raymond Matchell Jr., John Matchell Jr. and Steve
Matchell.
Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Britton Funeral Home,
Steelville, Missouri.
Charles Phillip Mueller
Charles Phillip Mueller of Cuba, Missouri, son of the late John
Henry and Virgie Mabel (Paul) Mueller, passed away Sunday, January
16, 2005, at the age of 59 years.
Charles was born March 14, 1945 at Sedalia, Missouri and was
raised in Sullivan. He was a 1963 graduate of Sullivan High School
and later graduated from Linn Technical School.
At one time, while working at Chrysler, he was part owner of the
former Thunder Valley Drag Strip in Sullivan where many a young
driver would test his skills as to whose car was the fastest.
Later in life Charles drove commercially as a truck driver after
which he became employed at Von Weise Gear Company. After 17 years
of employment there he transferred to TDM, Inc. in St. Clair.
Charles was known as an individual who was laid back, funny and
had a strong will. He loved kids and metal detecting, arrowhead
hunting and especially muscle cars.
He is survived by one son, Charles P. Mueller, of Jefferson City,
Missouri, four daughters, Amanda Meneley, of Jefferson City, Anita
Mueller of Cuba, Missouri, Stacey Miller of Owensville, Missouri,
Kelly Mueller of Bourbon, Missouri, one brother, John H. Mueller of
Calgary, Alberta Canada, nine grandchildren, other relatives and
friends. Along with his parents, Charles was preceded in death by a
sister, Lois Abernathy.
Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 19,
2005 from Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Bart
Hildreth officiating.
Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Hassebroek
Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
Florence Sue Ann Rose
Florence Sue Ann Frolker Rose, died Saturday, January 22, 2005 at
her home in Owensville. She was 63.
She was born June 21,1941 in St Louis to J.C. and Helen Knichel
Curtman. She married Billie Frolker on February 2, 1958 in Ironton.
He died in 1988. She then married Edward Rose on June 7, 2000 in
Owensville, Missouri.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Sue
Frolker; a stepson, Robert Rose and a brother, Charles Curtman.
Survivors include: her husband, Edward Rose; a son, Curt Frolker
and wife Jane of Owensville, Missouri; a daughter, Linda Skornia and
husband Mike of Cuba, Missouri; a brother Ronald Curtman and wife
Peggy of Owensville, Missouri; a stepdaughter; a sister, Laura
Hinson and husband Terry of Owensville, Missouri; four
grandchildren; six step grandchildren; one great grandchild and four
step great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, at Gottenstroeter Funeral
Home in Owensville, Missouri with Rev. Ken Patterson officiating.
Burial was in the Owensville City Cemetery.
