Jim graduated from Rolla High School in 1964 and served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968 during the Vietnam Conflict. He later served in the National Guard from 1982 to 1984. After living in South Dakota for a number of years, Jim and his family returned to Rolla in 1984 after he suffered a stroke, which left him homebound. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Bailey of Maplewood, Missouri; daughter, Teri (Bailey) Craighead of Cuba, Missouri; four grandsons, William, Matthew and John Craighead and Tyler Jacobs; sister, Mary (Bailey) Crutchfield and husband Jim of Moberly, Missouri; other relatives and friends. John Thurman Britton John Thurman Britton, was born September 29, 1928 at Huzzah, Missouri to Allie (Wilkinson) and Rev. John Leonard Britton and passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 22 days. He married Ava Gay Smith on August 5, 1948. John began a teaching career in Washington County, Missouri after attending Flat River Junior College, now known as Mineral Area College. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951, spending a year in Korea. During his service he was awarded the American Spirit of Honor Medal, out of 5,000 service members in basic training. After the military, John and Ava and their two daughters, moved to Los Angeles, California, where John was employed as an electrical engineer by the radar division of ITT Gilfillan. While there he extended his assignments in Central Europe, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Azores, Portugal, Spain and several locations in the U.S. After 20 years with ITT, John took early retirement and they moved to Crawford County, Missouri in 1974, where they became active in the family businesses with his two brothers, Alfred and Don. John ran Franklin Variety in Cuba, worked actively in the Britton Funeral Homes, and was the broker of Century 21 Britton Associates. John was an active member, deacon, and taught an Adult Men's Sunday school class at First Baptist Church, Cuba. In 1983, they moved to Steelville and purchased the funeral home which is now known as Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. While in Steelville, John was an active deacon and taught an Adult Men's Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church. John had been President of the local Gideon Camp, President of the Meramec Regional Development Corp., Chairman of the Steelville Community Park committee, member of the Lebanon Lodge #77 AF&AM of Steelville, receiving his 50-year pin in 2012, member of the Order of the Eastern Star # 398 of Cuba and member of the 32nd Degree Mason Scottish Rite of St. Louis, President of the Steelville Community Foundation, Chairman of the Steelville Planning and Zoning Commission, Chairman of the Crawford County Red Cross, Board of Director for the Steelville Telephone Exchange, President of the Steelville Chamber of Commerce, member of the Community Betterment Committee and President of the Steelville Industrial Development Authority. He was awarded the 1990 Steelville Chamber of Commerce's "Person of the Year," "Missouri's Best," presented by State Treasurer Wendell Bailey, Missouri Community Betterment Leadership Award by Gov. John Ashcroft, and Extension Leader Honor Roll by UMR in "recognition of his work in helping develop and carry out local outreach extension programs;" and received a certificate of appreciation from the American Legion for "Outstanding Patriotism and Generosity of Community, State and Nation." He also received the 2005 Eugene E. Northern Award by the Missouri's MRPC for his "enthusiasm, optimism, confidence, commitment, determination and leadership" in the Steelville community and Meramec Region. Other accomplishments were the planning and construction of the Meramec Music Theatre in Steelville, the Country Kitchen family restaurant in Cuba and the recent restoration and renovation of the Fleming building in Cuba, Missouri. Ava and John enjoyed 66 years together. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. John and Allie Wilkinson Britton; brother, Alfred J. Britton; and three sisters, Marie and husband Rev. Busby of St. James, Missouri was born January 6, 1935, in St. Louis, Missouri to Eugene A. and Zella Mae (Geisler) Windsor and passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at the age of 80 years. She attended St. Louis public schools and graduated from Soldan High School in 1953. She was united in marriage to James D. Busby of St. Louis, Missouri in September 1954 and to this union three sons were born. Margaret later got her LPN license and worked at DePaul Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri until she retired in 1991 when she moved to St. James, Missouri to be closer to her family. She then came out of retirement and went to work at the St. James Veteran's Home until 1997 when she again retired, this time for good, to have more time with her family and her hobbies of crochet, knitting, reading. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Zella Windsor; her older siblings, Ted N. Windsor and Helen (Windsor) Cornell. Dorothy accepted the Lord early in life and was active in church work. She taught in Sunday School, sang in the choir and was involved in many church activities. She worked in the office at Carnation Co. in Pasedena, California, where she met her husand, Dr. Henry E. Lestmann, on a blind date set up by his father. They were married on August 10, 1947 and to this union four children were born. She enjoyed reading, sewing and embroidering. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. H.E. Janice and was raised in the Potosi, Missouri area. When she was young girl, she was baptized in the Baptist faith. On February 14, 1970 Janice was united in marriage to Glen Eugene Ruble, Jr. and to this marriage a daughter was born. Janice loved to garden, especially flowers and she was terribly fond of her dogs, Libby and Susie. Janice never complained about her struggles and had a caring heart to all. She loved her country and was a true patriot. She and Glen devoted their time to various C.C.C. restoration projects in the area. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Wilma Lyons; and an infant brother, Glennon Allan Lyons. After graduating from high school Athalee went on to attend business college for two years. She was an accomplished dancer, teaching tap dance and also performing on stage. She was also a very talented seamstress and dressmaker. She married Orville Summers on September 25, 1948 in St. James, Missouri, and to this union three children were born. Orville and Athalee moved to the family farm where they would raise their family and Angus cattle. She loved living on the farm where she would enjoy a big garden raising food and canning so she could feed her family fresh food in the long winter months. After the death of her sister at a young age she raised her children, her grandchildren and her nieces. She had a soft spot for stray cats and dogs. She loved baking and her family will remember her delicious cakes and pies.. Arts and crafts were also a great passion of hers, not only sewing, but she loved woodworking. Her family fondly recalls that "granny" hasn't missed Wheel of Fortune in 30 years! Athalee was a member of the Immaculate Conception Cathloic Church and was very involved until her health no longer permitted. She was preceded in death by her parents, Farrel and Barbara Stearns; husband, Orville, in 1982; sister, Nadine Turner; and half-sister, Maxine Waller. On January 1976, Hubert married Barbara Studley. She passed away February, 2007. Hubert was united in marriage to Judy Gazette in Branson, Mo. on December 22, 2007. Hubert served his country in the United States Air Force. He was 32 degree Master Mason for almost 40 years and secretary for many years at the Branson Lodge. He was a long time member of the Eastern Star; Taney County Shriners Club; Past District Deputy Grand Master of 43rd Masonic District of Missouri. Thebeau Minnie A. Thebeau of Cuba, Missouri, formerly of Richwoods, Missouri, was born Thursday, May 16, 1918 at Richwoods, Missouri to William and Theresa (nee Recar) Adams and passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at the age of 96 years. Minnie married Vivian Thebeau on November 3, 1938 at Richwoods, Missouri and to this union nine children were born. Minnie spent her life taking care of family and home. She raised a large garden every summer and spent hours on end canning for the winter. Minnie could bake bread, cobblers, donuts, cookies, cream puffs, coconut cream pies, biscuits and rolls, just to name a few that were amazing. Minnie was a mid-wife in her younger years. She enjoyed quilting, dancing, fishing, playing bingo and traveling. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Theresa Adams; husband, Vivian Thebeau; three children, Theresa Gullett-Newbanks, William "Billy" Thebeau and Brenda Thebeau; two grandsons, Roger and Kris; five brothers; one great granddaughter, Casey; and one sister. She is survived by her six children, June and husband Bob Edwards of Nixa, Missouri, Janet and husband Billy McMullin of Nixa, Missouri, Elvin and wife Maxine Thebeau of St. Clair, Missouri, Tiny and husband Don Summers of Nixa, Missouri, Tony and wife Beth Thebeau of Desoto, Missouri and Rhonda and husband Randy Ware of Cuba, Missouri; 14 grandchildren, Kim, Darlene, Jeana, Tina, Tammy, Toni, Tiffany, Angel, Scott, Jason, Tara, Kris, Cody and Gabe; 19 great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Visitation was held Thursday, January 29, 2015 from 5-8 p.m. at the Mizell Funeral Home in Cuba, Missouri. Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Mizell Funeral Home in Cuba, Missouri with Father Robert Liss as Celebrant. Special music was "Be Not Afraid," "On Eagles Wings," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace." Interment and prayers followed at the St. Stephen Catholic Cemetery in Richwoods, Missouri. Betty Jean Wood Betty Jean Wood of Cuba, Missouri was born December 8, 1941 at St. Louis, Missouri to Meredeth Frances and Dorothy Ann (nee Griffith) Cissell and passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the age of 73 years. Betty married James Harold Wood on June 25, 1960 at St. Louis, Missouri and to this union two children were born. Betty worked for many years as a waitress for the Spare Rib in Steelville, Missouri before moving to Cuba, Missouri. She was the Montgomery Ward Lady, the Avon Lady and Betty and Jim owned and operated the Ozark Cafe located in Cuba during the 1980's. In 1996 Betty retired after nine years working for the Cuba Walmart. She spoiled her two cats Maggie and Snickers. Betty was a collector of everything, especially stuffed bears, angels and snow globes. In her younger years Betty spent many hours working outside in her flower garden, riding the motorcycle with Jim, cooking and collect every kitchen cooking gadget there was. Betty never left the house unless her makeup was perfect and jewelry on. For the last few years Betty only enjoyed traveling if it was to the casino. She was preceded in death by her parents, Meredeth and Dorothy Cissell; husband, James Harold Wood; two sisters, Barbara Oliver and Mary Palermo; and two brothers, David and Kenneth Cissell. She is survived by her children, Pamela R. and husband Mike Click of Cuba, Missouri and James David "Jamie" and wife Ruth Wood of Cuba, Missouri; five grandchildren, Grant Wood of Steelville, Missouri, Garrett Wood of Owensville, Missouri, Josh Walker of Texas, Nikki Walker of California and Megan Shaw of Owensville, Missouri; one sister, Kathy Bell of St. Charles, Missouri; five brothers-in-law, Mariano "Pal" Palermo of St. Louis, Missouri, Rodney Oliver of High Ridge, Missouri, Clifford and wife Peggy Wood of Clayton, Missouri, Thomas and wife Jean Wood of St. Charles, Missouri and Elroy "Butch" and wife Rene Wood of Eureka, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Visitation was held Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 1-4 p.m. at the Mizell Funeral Home in Cuba, Missouri. Funeral service was held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Mizell Funeral Home in Cuba, Missouri. Special music was "The Old Rugged Cross," "Go Rest High on that Mountain" and "Precious Memories." In keeping with Betty's wishes she was cremated following the funeral service.
