Benjamin L. Graddy
Benjamin L. Graddy of Bourbon, Mo. passed away on Friday, February 8, 2002
at the age of 69 years.
Mr. Graddy was born on April 12, 1932 at Bourbon, Mo. to Rufus Allen and
Ruth Jane (Pratt) Graddy. He lived the majority of his life in the Bourbon
area and honorably served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korea
War. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was awarded a bronze star and
several commendations and citations for his service.
Mr. Graddy was a self-employed auto body repairman in the Bourbon area for
many years. On June 29, 1996 he was married to Carole Sue Moore in Bourbon.
He was known as a gentle man who loved to garden, cut wood and enjoyed
nature and especially loved karaoke. He was a loving father, step-father
and brother and found great delight in his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Graddy of the family home, four sons and
daughters-in-law; Roger and Barb Graddy of Twin Falls, Idaho, Mark and
Trish Graddy of Farmington, New Mexico, Larry and Kelly Graddy of Bourbon,
Mo., Randy and Sherri Graddy of Farmington, New Mexico, two daughters and
sons-in-law; Debbie and Kenny Borgmeyer of Union, Mo., Denise and David
Cannon of Bourbon, Mo.; four step-sons, Rusty Moore and wife Christina of
Pawnee, Illinois, Craig Moore and wife Linda of Shumway, Illinois, Gary
Moore of Diego Garcia British Island and Kevin Moore and wife Sheila of
Effingham, Illinois; one step-daughter, Dee Ann Gordon of Beecher City,
Illinois; six brothers, Ronnie Graddy of Bourbon, Mo., Harold Graddy and
wife Mildred of Sullivan, Mo., Don Graddy and wife Faye of Geiserville,
California, Cecil Graddy, Dean Graddy and wife Pearl, Ed Graddy and wife
Kathy, all of Bourbon, Mo.; five sisters, Dorothy Mae Whittacher and
husband Earnest of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Mildred Hurst of Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma, Evelyn Schmidt of Sullivan, Mo., Hilda Phillips of Sullivan and
Hazel Belle and husband Ronnie of Peoria, Illinois; 28 grandchildren and
one great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 11, 2002
from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor
Windle Starns officiating. Interment with full military honors was in Lea
Cemetery, Leasburg, Mo. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the
Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Mo. Those who desire may make memorials to
BJC Hospice.
D. Ervin Hendrickson
Delmar Ervin Hendrickson was born on August 13, 1921 to James Arthur
Hendrickson and Bessie Ann McWilliams in Jakes Prairie, Mo. He passed away
suddenly on Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at Phelps County Regional Medical
Center in Rolla, Mo. at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 23 days.
Ervin served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army and was awarded a
bronze star for the Rome-ARNO Campaign.
He married Ruth Spurgeon on June 5, 1948 in Steelville, Mo. and to this
union one daughter was born.
Ervin was a member of the DAV Chapter 65 in Cuba, Mo. He worked 12 years
for Paul T. Carr in Cuba, Mo. before he became a rural mail carrier for the
U.S. Postal Service for 26 years. In his free time he enjoyed woodworking
and crafts. He also was a candy and fudge maker, and especially enjoyed
being with family and friends.
Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Eldro and wife
Irene Hendrickson, and an infant brother.
Those who remain to mourn his passing are his dear wife Ruth of the home;
his daughter Joy Brandenburger and husband Ray of Owensville, Mo.;
granddaughter Tracy Brandenburger of Owensville, Mo.; one sister Celesta
Spurgeon and husband Granvil of Owensville, Mo.; sister and brother-in-laws
Frances Sutter and husband Charles of Branson, Mo., Jim Spurgeon and wife
Betty of Owensville, Mo., Gene Spurgeon, Donald Spurgeon and wife Nancy,
all of Cuba, Mo.; a special niece Tammy Spurgeon, nieces, nephews, many
relatives and friends, all who will sadly miss and fondly remember Ervin
Hendrickson.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, February 6, 2002 from 6-9 p.m. at Hutson
Funeral Home, Cuba, Mo. Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 7,
2002 at 1 p.m. at Hutson Funeral Chapel, Cuba, Mo., with Rev. Woodrow
Martin officiating. Music provided by Paul Hutson with accompainment by
Valerie Hutson.
Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cuba, Mo. with pallbearers Gene Spurgeon,
Jim Spurgeon, Danny Schmidt, Carl Hendrickson, Russ New, and Keith
Spurgeon.
All arrangements were under the direction of Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Mo.
Betty J. Parker
Betty J. Parker of Sullivan, Mo. passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2002
at the age of 67 years. Mrs. Parker was born on March 20, 1934 in St.
Louis, Mo. to Otis Earl and Margaret Eva (Tutterrow) Cross. Early in her
life she moved to Sullivan, and has remained a lifelong resident of the
Sullivan area. On January 28, 1949 she was united in marriage to James H.
Parker in Sullivan. Throughout her adult years Betty served her family as a
devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. On December 11, 2000 Mr.
Parker preceded her in death. Betty found pleasure in crocheting, and
spending time with her family. She was a member of the Meramec Valley
Baptist Church of Sullivan.
She is survived by two sons, Marvin Parker and wife, Toni, of Bourbon, Mo.
and Carl Parker and wife Sandy, of Sullivan; one daughter, Sharon Jeter and
husband, Ron, of Springfield, Illinois; one brother, Walter Cross of
Collinsville, Illinois; one sister, Corene Doughton of Cedar Hill, Mo.;
eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other
relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Parker
was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2002
from the Meramec Valley Baptist Church in Sullivan with Pastor Richard
Wiliams officiating. Interment was in Cave Spring Cemetery. Visitation was
from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday at Meramec Valley Baptist Church in
Sullivan. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral
Home of Sullivan.
Frank Roy Smith
Frank Roy Smith was born Monday, September 26, 1927, at Louisiana, Mo., the
son of the late Roy Pace Smith and Nina Lura (Houchin) Smith Heginbottom.
He entered into eternal rest Thursday, January 31, 2002, at his home, Route
4, Salem, Mo., at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 5 days.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a young man, and served twenty-three years
in a combination of service in the Navy and the Air Force. Frank served in
World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and retired as T/Sgt. From Nellis
AFB, Nevada on October 1, 1972 and retired from the Santa Fe Railroad at
Wichita, Kansas in 1986.
Frank was a member of the Midian Shrine in Dallas, Texas, Masonic Lodge No.
593 of Union, Mo. and I.O.O.F. Lodge in Washington, Mo. and a member of the
Victory Community Baptist Church of Cherryville, Mo.
On April 15, 1949, at Hannibal, Mo., Frank was united in marriage to Jane
Anne Hancock. Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted
wife Jane Smith, one son Roy Douglas Smith, grandson Jonathan N. Smith,
granddaughter Misty R. Smith of the home and grandson Corban Smith of
Arizona.
Memorial services were held 2 p.m. Monday, February 4, 2002, in the Britton
Funeral Home Chapel, Steelville, Mo. with Rev. Roger Silvey officiating.
Musical selections were provided by Donna Silvey.
Burial will be in Grandview Burial Park, Hannibal, Mo. Arrangements under
the direction of the Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo.
Beverly Jean Woods
Beverly Jean Woods nee Hodges was born Friday, October 16, 1936, in Rector,
Mo., a daughter of Hattie Josephine Hodges (nee Smith) and the late Denver
C. Hodges.
She departed this life Wednesday, January 23, 2002, in the St. Mary's
Health Center, Richmond Heights, Mo., at the age of 65 years, 3 months and
7 days.
On August 16, 1975, at Salem, Mo., Beverly was united in marriage to
Richard James Woods, son of Myrt and Elsie (Brown) Woods. They have enjoyed
over 26 years together.
Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her devoted husband,
Richard "Dick" Woods of St. Louis, Mo.; her loving mother, Hattie Hodge of
Steelville, Mo.; two brothers, Dale Hodges and wife Mary and David Hodges
and wife Melissa, all of Salem, Mo.
One step-son Kevin James Woods, fiancé Beverly and daughters McKenzie and
Abbegail of O'Fallon, Mo.; one step-daughter, Debra Faye Woods of St.
Charles, Mo.; two step-sisters, Gail Blackwell of Timber, Mo., and Dayle
Montgomery of Tennessee.
Sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Terry and Linda Woods of Washington,
Mo., Mary Gean and Dale Young, Violet (Sis) and Estel Sanders, all of
Steelville, Mo., Joyce and Dewey Olney of Little River, Texas, and Audrey
Woods of St. Louis, Mo.; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many
friends.
In addition to her father, Denver C. Hodges, Beverly was preceded in death
by a step-son, Richie Allen Woods and brother-in-law Willie Woods.
Beverly was retired from Civil Service. She was employed by the United
States Army as an equipment manager.
Beverly Jean Woods lay in state 4-9 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2002, with
services held at 7 p.m., Rev. Jerry Beers officiating, at the Britton
Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo.
She was in state 3-9 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2002, at the James and Gahr
Mortuary, Salem, Mo. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 27,
2002, in the James and Gahr Chapel with Rev. Delmar Hutson officiating.
Music was provided by organist Vicki Newcomb and vocalist Jolene Preston.
Pallbearers were Steve Hodges, Travis Sanders, Eddie Sanders, Johnny
Sanders, Troy Frizzell, Ronald Willis, and Jimmy Woods.
Committal prayers and interment were in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Salem, Mo.,
under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary, Salem, Mo. All other
arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville,
Mo.
