MO Local Obituaries for the Week of February 19, 2020 Herschel Home Albright Herschel Homer Albright of Sullivan, Missouri was born June 24, 1927 to Harley and Carrie Radford Albright and passed away Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the age of 92 years. Herschel was raised by his mother and stepfather, Bert Miller. Herschel was forced to discontinue his education at Leasburg High School when his step brother, Art, left to fight in World War II and Herschel was needed to help on the family farm. As a young man, Herschel worked as a gas station attendant, truck driver and well driller. In May of 1949 he married Pearl Ray in Pocahontas, Arkansas. His children would tell you that he was a strict disciplinarian with a soft side whom they used to wrestle with on the living room floor. He retired from the Meramec Mining Company in 1978 after 24 years of service. Herschel always had lots of stories. He then worked for Wallis Oil for 10 years as a manager of a gas station and car wash. After a second retirement, he worked part-time for Blanton Oil, Sullivan Car Wash and Bartolotta's Auto Dealership. He he did raise cattle off and on. Although he always complained about having to feed and tend for the cows each day, he also recounted how he could get them tame enough that he could pet them. Herschel was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bourbon, Missouri for six decades. He volunteered as an usher and a trustee for the church. After their retirements, Pearl and Herschel traveled a bit. They went to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii and many other U.S. states. After Pearl passed, Herschel lived at Dunsford Court where he enjoyed playing bingo, pitching pennies and competing at Wii Bowling. He was preceded in death by his wife Pearl in 2016; his parents; son, Jay Albright; and granddaughter, Katie Colson. As a young boy, he grew up around Cherryville, Missouri graduating rom Cherryville High School. One of his first jobs as a boy was when he became hired by Mr. Hoppe from St. Louis, Missouri to help feed the swans and peacock in the Hoppe Park in Steelville, Missouri. In later years Jim became manager of the Fisherman's Dude Ranch. He married Leona Ogle in 1989. Jim was baptized in the Presbyterian Church and later attended church at the Steelville Assembly of God. He always enjoyed fishing, gardening, growing flowers and building items with wood. He believed in helping children who had medical issues and was a supporter of St. Jude Hospital. Daniel Gregory Lahmann Daniel Gregory Lahmann of Sullivan, Missouri was born on July 26, 1934 in Sullivan, Missouri to Chester and Dolly (Studdard) Lahmann and passed away on Monday, February 10, 2020 at the age of 85 years. Danny honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955 aboard the USS Pickaway (APA/LPA-222) and the USS Fort Marion (LSD-22). He was later employed by the former Meramec Mining Company until its closing in 1977. Danny attended Bailey Technical School for Automotive and Diesel Technology, graduating first in his class in 1979. Danny then went to work for Ryder Truck Rental as a diesel mechanic and remained there until his retirement in 1996. He married Kit Guthrie on October 9, 1965. He accepted Jesus as his Savior in 1980 and was baptized, becoming a member of New Testament Baptist Church, where he r egularly attended and previously taught Sunday school. During his earlier years at New Testament, when he was able to, he enjoyed "soul winning" nights (visitation) and chaperoning on the church youth outings. For the greatest part of his life he enjoyed history and historical sites, traveling and exploring, auctions, metal detecting and mowing grass. Loved dogs. Was iffy on cats, except one named Lilly. His little poodle, Hannah, was his favorite hound, taking her for rides. Danny always had a special respect and place in his heart for "old" people and our military. He served with the meals on wheels program and enjoyed visiting nursing homes and other shut-ins. He followed politics closely and would gladly engage in political conversation. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kit Lahmann in 2018; his parents, Chester and Dolly Lahmann; grandson, John Meade; and brothers, David and Bill Lahmann. She married Robert Magnin,on February 12, 1949. She was very active in the community and her church. She was a life-long member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in St. James, Missouri. She was also very active in the Republican National Committee, and an active and passionate member of the farming community in and around the St. James area. She was very talented in sewing. She made her own clothing, drapes for their home and reupholstered her own furniture. She worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company training their employees on the sewing machines. Robert's hobby was building antique cars, and he and Thelma would drive around town and in parades in those cars. Thelma was known for her hat. If you saw her out and about, she would almost certainly have a hat of some sort on, straw floppy hats were her favorite. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Concordia Brown; and her husband of 65 years, Robert Magnin, in 2014. Donald Lee Smith Donald Lee Smith of Jefferson City, Missouri was born at Standing Rock in Gladden, Missouri on November 16, 1930 to Hershel Ray and Delsie (Halbrook) Smith and passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the age of 89 years. Donald loved growing up in Gladden. He also enjoyed telling stories about growing up with his sister Virginia, and brothers, Harold, Jim, and Bob. Donald was called Speedy by some, as he just never moved to fast. Donald attended College in Springfield, Missouri and came back to teach at the Gladden Empire School. He married the love of his life, Ellen Jean Wallis, on August 18, 1951, they shared 59 years together before she passed in 2011. Donald left his new bride to serve his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. When he returned home he and Ellen started a family that was blessed with four daughters. Donald worked for the Jefferson City Post Office for 34 years. Most of that time he was a window worker, which meant he got to talk to the customers. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson City. He enjoyed Cardinal baseball, planting flowers on his porch and around the yard, feeding the birds, and getting to watch them around the yard, but mostly he loved his family and spending time with them. He loved family reunions, visiting relatives, watching any events that included his children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren. Betty married Cecil D. Stricklin on Friday, February 20, 1953 at Steelville, Missouri.. Betty worked for Convey Shoe and Brown Shoe for many years before she retired. In her younger years she enjoyed sewing and quilting. Betty spent every spring planting a gardening, all summer was spent canning and for the last few years, she would help her sister Helen with her canning. Betty enjoyed being outside, mowing grass, splitting and stacking wood. She thought you had to burn wood for heat. She loved going to yard sales, auctions and resale shops, because she was a collector of anything and everything. One of her favorite foods was fish, especially the ones that her son-in-law Calvin would catch and then bring her the whole fish. She went to every sporting event and school program that her grandsons were in. Betty was a devout in attending the Cuba Free Will Baptist Church. She was at church every time the doors opened for any special event. She married Donald Valley on June 26, 1965 at Leslie, Missouri. Donna enjoyed sewing and fishing. She was preceded in death by her parents, Noel and Etta Shoemaker; husband, Donald Valley; son, Paul Valley; brothers, John, Joe and Henry Shoemaker; and sisters, Ida Koehler, Iva Butler, Juanita Sachs, Irene Havener and Frona Scantlin. She is survived by her son, Tommy Valley and wife Kathy of Sullivan, Missouri; brothers, Gene Shoemaker of Pacific, Missouri, George Shoemaker and wife Becky of Springfield, Missouri and Bob Shoemaker and wife Patty of Gerald, Missouri; sisters, Helen Peth of Union, Missouri, Okal Nevills and husband Art of Gerald, Missouri and Berniece Stephens of Gerald, Missouri; grandchildren, Timothy Valley of Sullivan, Missouri, Kyra Valley of Cuba, Missouri and Shane Valley of Sullivan, Missouri; a special great grandchild Evalyn Mackley; other relatives and friends. Barbara Jean Wagoner Barbara Jean Wagoner of St. James, Missouri was born January 13, 1950 in Rolla, Missouri to Joseph Leslie and Emily Marie Havens Smith and passed away Friday, February 14, 2020 at the age of 70 years. On October 19, 1968 in Vichy, Missouri she married Richard Wagoner. Barbara loved to crochet and enjoyed showing Jackie that she had crocheted more than she did. Barbara was very artistic and loved to paint. Her daughter Alicia took her and Richard to the Cardinal ball games in St. Louis, Missouri and was so proud of the St. Louis Jersey she would wear it for weeks at a time. One of her favorite past times was watching Cardinals at the bird feeder. In her younger years she and Richard loved to garden and had big ardens and sold produce. No job was to big for Barbara. When she was in her wheelchair she would get down on the ground and pull weeds in the flower beds. She enjoyed being outdoors either gardening or fishing, she loved to be in the sun. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Emily Smith; husband, Richard on September 14, 2016; son-in-law, Jesse Embrey; brother-in-law, Darid Canahan; and one great grandson, Micah Embrey. She is survived by her daughters, Jacqueline Arnold and husband David of St. James, Missouri, Lori Nicole Sarnowski and husband Troy of Gasconade, Missouri, Alicia Rene Embrey of St. James, Missouri and Kimberly Ann Wagoner of St. James, Missouri; one brother, Joseph Smith and his wife Alice of Kokomo, Indiana; sisters, Mary Garine Lindsey and husband Bill of Rolla, Missouri, Vicky Lynn McCanahan of Edgar Springs, Missouri, Pamela Knapp and husband Bruce of Chilhwee, Missouri, Melody Ann Harris and husband Scott of Dittmer, Missouri and Angela Marie Scheel and husband Danny of St. James, Missouri; 13 grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren, with two great grandchildren on the way; other relatives and many friends. Donald "Don" George West Donald "Don" George West of Sullivan, Missouri was born on March 8, 1940 in Leasburg, Missouri to George and Thelma (Kimes) West and passed away on February 11, 2020 at the age of 79 years. He was raised in Leasburg, Missouri and graduated from Bourbon High School, Class of 1958. Don worked for many years for the Wallis Companies as a truck driver until his retirement in 2001. He was also a small business proprietor having owned and operated small service stations in Leasburg and Sullivan, Missouri and his life. He loved serving his customers and developed many friendships with co-workers employees, customers, and other members of the community through his work. Don loved travelling and RV camping. Over the years he made many trips to some favorite locations, including Colorado, Alaska and Branson, Missouri. He loved yard work and was talented in landscaping design, even being recognized in the local newspaper one year for having the "most beautiful yard" in town. Don spent his earlier and later years admiring and working on old cars. His passion for cars culminated in recent years with his purchase and full restoration of a 1965 Ford Mustang. He loved dogs and nurtured his friendship with a variety of breeds and sizes over the years, his most recent affection for his and his wife's chihuahua, Miley. Don accepted Jesus as his Savior as a young man. He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church in Leasburg, Missouri, where he was reared by his parents as a young boy and developed friendships with other members over the years as he grew older. He was preceded in death by his previous wife, Deanna (McClary) West; and his parents, George and Thelma West. He is survived by his wife, Vera Ray-West of Sullivan, Missouri; his children from a previous marriage, Sonya (West) Smith and husband Greg of Nixa, Missouri and Clint West and wife Emily of Weldon Spring, Missouri; step children, Shauna Ramshaw and husband Michael of St. Peters, Missouri and Brent Ray and wife Joan of St. Louis, Missouri; five grandchildren, Tanza Smith of Maryland Heights, Missouri, Canyon Smith and Bryn Smith, both of Springfield, Missouri, Megan West and Caleb West, both of Weldon Spring, Missouri; seven step grandchildren, Aaron, Ashley, Alex and Andrew Ramshaw, Allison Witty and husband, Sterling, Tasha Gerling and Brandon Ray; one brother, Larry West and wife Janet of Sullivan, Missouri; one sister, Janet Isgrigg and husband John of Bland, Missouri; other relatives and friends.
