Howard Kampmann McCann Howard Kampmann McCann was born December 13, 1936, at Cook Station, Mo., to the union of Charles E. and Mamie (Kampmann) McCann. He passed away on January 11, 2001, at the age of 64 years and 29 days. Howard grew up on the family farm at Cedar Ford on the Meramec River and learned very early in his life how to produce and market farm products. After graduating from Steelville High School in 1955, he became a self-employed businessman doing custom farming and trucking grain and cattle. This business took him miles from home and soon evolved into his career as a customized livestock order buyer. His love for grain and cattle along with his desire to travel, provided him with a very satisfying career until his death on January 11 as a result of an accident with a steer. Howard was known throughout the midwest and his producers and his buyers became family friends over the past 40 years. He knew the people and visited their farms enough to know their type of operations. As a family, the McCanns enjoyed the travels and the hospitality wherever they went. Howard served on the ASCS Township Committees and then served on the County ASCS Committee for many years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and promoted agriculture by being a member of the Missouri and National Cattlemen Association and attending state and national conventions. In addition to his love for his family and his work, Howard loved nature and wildlife. It was his great joy to work outdoors on the hill in town where he lived. He spent hours clearing the vines from the woods so that the trees, turkeys, and deer could live. People around him knew about his gardening skills as he would often deliver garden produce to their doors and especially zucchini to Golden Echoes. It was not unusual to see him going across the lawn with a container of plant food, a can of birdseed, or the water hose to water the turtles who drank from a split-tree root in the yard. No creature was to great or too small to get his attention. He especially liked the birds. In 1964 Howard married Kathleen Decker and to this union two children were born: Amy Kathleen and Robert Wayne. Howard loved his family and included them in his business and in his pleasure time.
