MO Local Obituaries for the week of Feb. 21, 2002 Russell George Bell Russell George Bell was born Wednesday, February 12, 1919, at Steelville, Mo., a son of the late William David Bell and Fannie Viola Bell (nee Simpson). He entered eternal rest Thursday, February 7, 2002, at the Missouri Baptist Center, St. Louis, Mo., at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 25 days. Russell had two daughters, Nancy and Susan, from the union of Georgia Mae Bell (nee Wycoff). He was preceded in death by two wives, Georgia Mae Wycoff and Jean Marie Stock, one sister, Hazel Bell and three brothers-in-law, Harry Reifenstahl, George Vie, and Virgil Meister. He served his country in the Army of the United States from January 1943 to March 1946. During this time he earned the noncommissioned officer rank of Staff Sgt. He served in the European Theater in Battery A, 787th Field Artillery Battalion. He was a drill instructor in Basic Training for 22 months. He was also in charge of prisoner of war warehouse, supervising 12 men, requisitioned and checked equipment and supplies. He was a charter member of V.F.W. Tabor Memorial Post #6479 of Steelville. Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted children; Nancy and husband Robert McGuire of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Susan and husband Gary Robison of St. Louis, Mo., Tom Stock and wife Connie of Armington, Illinois, Michelle and husband Jeff Willis of Springtown, Texas, Karen and husband Steve Perini of St. Peters, Mo., Mike Stock and wife Jeannie of St. Charles, Mo. One brother, William (Bud) Bell and wife Jean of St. Charles, Mo.; three sisters, Inez Reifenstahl, Geraldine Vie, Corrine Meister, all of Chesterfield, Mo.; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Russell George Bell lay in state 1-8 p.m., Friday, February 8, 2002, at the Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2002, in the Britton Chapel with Rev. Delmar Hutson officiating. Committal prayers and interment were in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Steelville, Mo. Full military honors were provided by the National Guard's Charlie Team of Jefferson City, Mo. Serving as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were Mike Becker, Jerry Beazley, Dave, Jerry and Mike Breier, Bill Freeman, Merle Stichnote and Edwin H. Williams. Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Mary Hattie Berry Mary Hattie Berry nee Wilson, the daughter of the Late William Wilson and Arminta (Morris) Wilson was born in Saco, Mo., November 26, 1900 and entered into eternal life on February 12, 2002, at the age of 101 years, 2 months and 16 days. On March 14, 1921, Hattie was united in marriage to Fred William Berry in Fredericktown, Mo. They enjoyed a loving marriage of sixty-six years. To this union three daughters were born, Hilda, Arbeta and Shirley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, two daughters, Hilda Berry and Arbeta Allen, one son-in-law, Phillip Allen, one brother, Lacy Wilson and three sisters, Gertrude Sitzes, Gracie Miller and Macie Cornman. Those who remain to mourn her passing are one daughter and son-in-law Floyd and Shirley Reed of Steelville, Mo.; four grandchildren, Patricia Allen, Fred Allen and wife Helen of Springfield, Mo., Debbie McGuire of Steelville, Mo., and Dennis Reed and wife Janine of St. Louis, Mo., several nieces, nephews and friends. Hattie spent most of her life in Wayne County, Mo., coming to Steelville to make her home in 1986 to be near her daughter. She became a Christian at an early age and was a member of the Rings Creek General Baptist Church, Patterson, Mo. She loved God and being in church services. After moving to Steelville she attended the First Baptist Church regularly as long as her health permitted, and at Gibbs Manor she always attended the church services provided there. She loved people and doing things for others and was always trying to help others at Gibbs Manor. She was an excellent cook and loved sharing with her neighbors. While living at Gibbs Manor for nine and a half years she was an inspiration to many with her encouraging words, witty humor and beautiful smile. Her family and many friends will miss her. She spent her last two years in Gibbs Care Center, Steelville, Mo. Mary Hattie Berry lay in state 2-8 p.m., Thursday, February 14, 2002 at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Friday, February 15, 2002 in the Britton Chapel with Dr. Cardis Bryan officiating. Musical selections were provided by pianist Carolyn Hawkins and vocalist Paula Stice. Committal prayers and interment were in the Masonic Cemetery, Piedmont, Mo. Pallbearers were Jim Brand, Charles Chipman, John Frazier, Bill Freeman, Hack Lea, and Bob Midyett. Arrangements were under the direction of Briton Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Madge Wilma Breese Madge Wilma Breese (nee Stevenson) of Cuba, Mo. was born on May 13, 1915 to the union of Harry Stevenson and Margaret Detwilier Stevenson in St. Louis, Mo. and passed away on February 15, 2002 at the age of 86 years, 9 months and 2 days. On August 12, 1935 she was united in marriage to John Enos Breese in Clayton, Mo. They were happily married for 67 years. Madge was preceded in death by her parents; one son Jack Breese; one brother Vick Stevenson; two sisters, Dorothy Kicker and Annamae Calcote. Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her loving husband John Breese; two sons, Ralph Breese and wife Joan; Raymond Breese; seven grandchildren, Debbie Spurgeon; Pam Weber; Johnnie Breese, Jr.; Teresa Massie; Jim Breese; Randy Breese; Jennifer Breese; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Madge was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and a good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Ernest Alonzo Britton Ernest Alonzo Britton of Cuba, Mo. was born on January 6, 1920 to the union of James Britton and Ettie Holtz Britton at Redmondville, Mo. and passed away on February 14, 2002 in Washington, Mo. at the age of 82 years, 1 month and 8 days. On November 28, 1942 he was united in marriage to Georgia Beaman in Steelville, Mo. They have been happily married for 59 years. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Sherry Britton; one brother Jack Britton; two sisters Daisy Volner and Lydia Britton. Mary Lou Cassidy Mary Lou Cassidy nee Tallent was born Monday, June 6, 1921, at Sligo, Mo., a daughter of the late Christopher Mitchell Tallent and Clara Jane (Stringer) Tallent. She entered eternal rest Wednesday, February 13, 2002, at the Gibbs Care Center, Steelville, Mo. at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 7 days. On June 26, 1937, at the courthouse in Steelville, Mo., Mary was united in marriage to Lloyd Cassidy. Five sons and three daughters were born to this union. They enjoyed over sixty-four years together. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by one son Jimmy Ray Cassidy; five brothers, James, John, Elvis, Jesse and Chris Tallent and four sisters, Margaret, Alice, Clara, and Bessie; two half-brothers, Lee and Otto Tallent and two brothers-in-law, Floyd Bell and Ed Brown. Martin nee Halbert was born Tuesday, November 27, 1911, at Davisville, Mo., a daughter of the late Walter Evans Halbert and Lilly Frances (Martin) Halbert. She entered eternal life Monday, February 11, 2002, at the Gibbs Care Center, Steelville, Mo., at the age of 90 years, 2 months and 14 days. On November 3, 1930 at Steelville, Mo., Hallie was united in marriage to Monroe Cecil Monroe, son of the late Jessie T. Martin and Susan Farar Martin. One son was born to this union. They enjoyed over sixty-nine years together before his death, March 3, 2000. They made their home in Bobby Holler, about three miles up Dry Creek until the last few years they made their home in the Steelville Senior Apartments. In addition to Monroe and her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Carman Halbert and wife Mary Lee, Estell Halbert, Horace Halbert, and Everett Halbert, two sisters, Leora Halbert and Nell Hotchkiss and husband Walter, brothers-in-law, Edward Ives and Clarence Kreamalmeyer. Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her devoted son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Melba Martin of Bourbon, Mo.; two sisters, Belle Ives of St. Charles, Mo. and Ina Kremalmeyer of Steelville, Mo.; two brothers, Dan Halbert and wife Ruth Ann of Cherryville, Mo., Homer Halbert and wife Ethel of Rolla, Mo. Two grandsons, Kelly Martin and wife Dawn of Fenton, Mo., Alan Martin and wife Phyllis of Bourbon, Mo.; five great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Martin of New York City, New York, Isaiah Martin of Collinsville, Illinois, Jeff Martin and wife Jill of Chesterville, Mo., Jason Martin of Bourbon and Svanah Martin of Fenton, Mo.; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends, all who will remember her as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2002 in the Britton Chapel with Pastor Doug Massie officiating. Kelly Martin gave a warm, personal eulogy of his Grandmother. Musical selections were provided by Rob and Alice Morton, Raye Lynn Sutherland and Roger Halbert. Committal prayers and interment were in First Baptist Cemetery, Cherryville, Mo. Johnnie Peterson Johnnie Peterson of Cuba, Mo. was born on December 28, 1923 to the union of John Franklin Peterson and Vesta Sanders Peterson at Honey Grove, Texas and passed away on February 15, 2002 in St. Louis, Mo. at the age of 78 years, 1 month and 18 days. In June of 1942 he was united in marriage to Martha Frick in San Francisco, California. They were happily married for 59 years. Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Donald and John Peterson, three brothers, Ira, JB, and Davis Peterson. Johnnie was a member of the Boiler Maker Local Union 27. Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his living wife Martha Peterson; three sons, Mike Peterson and wife Donna; Thomas Peterson and wife Lynelle; Scott Peterson; three daughters, Terry Leslie and husband Jerry; Susan Labeau and husband Marc; Melissa Badgett and husband Shawn; one brother Allen Peterson and wife Anne Mae; five sisters, Era Mae Felkins; Margarite Lynch; Betty Lou Hockett; Mary Hoffman; Imogene Risenhoover; numerous grandchildren, several great-grandchildren.
