MO Local Obituaries for the Week of February 24, 2021 Noel Kenneth "Jack" Alexander Noel Kenneth "Jack" Alexander was born on Friday, May 1, 1936 in Cherryville, Missouri to William Ray and Koradine C. Smith Alexander and passed away on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at the age of 84 years and 6 months. Jack grew up in the Edgar Springs area where he attended grade school at West Point Phelps County and then graduated from Rolla High School in 1954. During high school Jack worked at the Rolla Bakery for half of the day and then in the lube area of Asher Jones car dealer. After high school, he worked for Tucker Dairy before becoming owner of Jack's Conoco station across from Uptown Theatre in downtown Rolla. After he sold the station he worked for J.C. Penney until he moved to Kansas City where he worked for Sysco Foods for 23 years. In 1955 Jack married Della Faye Martin. After moving to Kansas City he met and married Arlene Holum in December, 1966 and they shared family and life together for 54 years. As a young man Jack had horses, and along with his parents enjoyed going on trail rides. He always had a love for cars. He was into drag racing in the late 50s and was most known for his white 57 Chevrolet with a red interior. Jack raced go carts when that was all the rage. He enjoyed going to stock car races with friends. Jack made a public profession of faith and was baptized by his Dad in Newburg, Missouri. Later he rededicated his life at Norfleet Baptist Church in Independence, Missouri and was baptized with Arlene under the ministry of Pastor Lee Mosby. He was a good friend with his neighbor Earl Brinley and the two couples attended church together at First Southern Baptist Church in Leasburg, Missouri. Later Jack and Arlene were members of First Baptist of Cuba, Missouri. Jack owned Harley Davidson motorcycles and he and Arlene enjoyed t ouring the US and into Canada. When Jack moved back to Cuba, Missouri in 1987, he opened Alexander Muffler and Brake and worked as partners with his son Doug until his retirement in 2001. In retirement, Jack and Arlene traveled and wintered in Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Koradine Alexander; wife, Arlene; son, Jonnie Dale Johnson; daughter, Kyle Gwen Gross; and brother-in-law Charles Keith Miller. He is survived by his sons, Doug Alexander and wife Donna of Rolla, Missouri and Timothy Johnson and wife Diane of Kansas City, Missouri; daughters, Vikki Nowling of Houston, Texas and Nancy Gambrel of Kingwood, Texas; sisters, Donna Miller of Springfield, Missouri and Debbie Templeton and husband Bob of Hickory, North Carolina; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Lethea "Ophelia" Edwards Lethea "Ophelia" Edwards of Sullivan, Missouri was born February 27, 1927 in Malvern, Arkansas to George and Stella (Keisler) Otts and passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at the age of 93 years. She was a long-time resident of Bourbon, Missouri and spent the last 15 years in Sullivan, Missouri. She was also a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Bourbon, Missouri. She worked at Bourbon Schools as head cook for several years, and was famous for her homemade rolls. During World War II, Ophelia lived with a cousin and attended high school in San Antonio, Texas, where she made lifelong friends. She attended many class reunions and kept in close contact with those friends throughout the years. Ophelia's devotion to her family was rivaled only by her love of fishing, square dancing and gardening. For many years, she was a frequent sight at her grandsons' athletic and school events, which she only missed when the fish were biting especially well or a square dance trip. She had an uncanny ability to catch a limit of crappie on the worst days at the lake, which always impressed those who camped alongside her. Though Ophelia will be dearly missed, these stories and the example of her life will live on. Her kindness and generosity to neighbors and friends included the sharing of garden products and childcare. She was a loyal friend who enjoyed helping others problem solve, often amazing her husband and friends with seeing a better way to accomplish a difficult task. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Raney Crider of Sullivan, Missouri; two grandchildren, Ryan and wife G oldie of Blue Springs, Missouri and Dustin and wife Erin of Golden, Colorado; two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Hudson; and countless extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Edwards Jr., whom she was married to for 71 years; one son, Tony; parents, George and Stella Otts; and seven brothers and sisters. Dustin Eugene Garrison Dustin Eugene Garrison was born on Tuesday, April 8, 1986 in St. Louis, Missouri to Daniel Ray and Vicki Lynn Verble Garrison and passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at the age of 34 years, 10 months and 5 days. Dustin's adventurous spirit was contagious. He was a master fisherman who lived to discover new honey holes on the Meramec, taking his beloved chocolate lab, Cocoa, along for many a jet boat ride. Also an avid and skilled outdoorsman, he trekked through the Missouri woods hunting fresh mushrooms or wild game in the spring, and big bucks in the fall. Dustin was also known for his fearlessness. He loved four-wheeling, dirt bike riding and boating. Dustin's one-of-a-kind brilliant smile didn't just light up his entire face, it lit up any space he was in. He hated to see people down and tried to cheer them up. Dustin understood how it felt to struggle with soul wounds. But regardless of his struggles or how bad things got, Dustin always held onto hope and came up with a bright plan. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at a young age, and never stopped believing in the power of forgiveness. Dustin was curious, resourceful, a dreamer and the ultimate salesman. He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Ray Garrison; grandparents, Dallas and Nadine Verble and Bill Johnson; and best friend, Billy Nickles. Rainey Charles Gray Rainey Charles Gray of Steelville, Missouri was born on Tuesday, January 11, 1944 in Steelville, Missouri to Charley Golden and Dollie Ollie Oxendine Gray and passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at the age of 77 years, 1 month and 3 days. Rainey attended Steelville Schools. During that time he played baseball, basketball and was a pole vaulter in track. He graduated from Steelville High School in the Class of 1961. He married Ellen Whalen on July 28, 1962. He joined the United States Army and served our country honorably during Vietnam. When he returned home, he worked at Brown Shoe where he met Judy Lane Missey. They got married at Courtois Baptist Church in Steelville, Missouri by Pastor Jerry Walls on August 30, 1969. Rainey accepted the Lord early in life and attended Huzzah Baptist Church. He worked as a butcher for IGA and Greg's super markets, then moved to Berryman, Missouri where he owned and operated the Berryman Store for a couple of years. He then owned Mac's Place and ran it for 27 years until closing it in March of 1999. Rainey enjoyed bowling and shooting pool, which he received many awards and trophies. He was a coin collector and lately enjoyed scrapping copper wire. Thomas "Tom" Leroy Gregory Thomas "Tom" Leroy Gregory of Lebanon, Missouri was born on Sunday, August 28, 1938 in Steelville, Missouri to Jesse Leroy and Lottie Irene Weber Gregory and passed away at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 21 days. Tom was a veteran of the United States military, serving in both the Air Force and the Army. Tom graduated from Steelville High School. After his high school graduation, Tom enlisted in the United States Air Force and served a four year term. One of those years being in the foreign country of Morocco, Africa. After his term of service, Tom returned to Steelville, Missouri He married Anita Ruth Garrison on April 6, 1963 at Cherryville Baptist Church. Tom and Anita were active in church and served the Lord faithfully. They attended many years with their children at the Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church in Ware, Missouri. Tom worked for Carter Carburetor in St. Louis, Missouri for many years. When the plant closed, he went to work for Chrysler. During these years Tom joined the Missouri Army National Guard and retired from the US military having served an additional 16 years. During this time, he traveled to several states and various other countries. When he retired, Tom and Anita moved to Fordland, Missouri. They bought a small farm and enjoyed country life raising cattle and gardening. They then were members of First Baptist Church of Strafford, Missouri. Anita passed away on May 10, 1999. He married Audrey Jane Barber on June 9, 2001 in Lebanon, Missouri. Tom enjoyed gospel music and he especially liked to listen to his sister, Alice Morton, her husband Rob and his sister-in-law Gaylene. Norlen Bernard Harke Norlen Bernard Harke of Steelville, Missouri was born on April 13, 1931 in Wautoma, Wisconsin to Bernard and Grace Harke and passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at the age of 89 years. He graduated from the Wautoma High School. He served in the National Guard from 1949 to 1956. He married Gloria Nelson on December 17, 1976 in Gallinston, Tennessee. He was self-employed in the concrete, pools and spas business for many years in Tennessee, Florida, Colorado and Missouri. His last business, Factory Direct Pools and Spas, was in Steelville, Missouri retiring in 2016. Norlen and Gloria were dedicated Green Bay Packer's fans. He was also a Chicago Cubs fan beginning at an early age. He and Gloria loved spending time together on their many cruises to Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean. Norlen had attended the Bourbon Seventh Day Adventist Church with Gloria. He also loved watching and listening to the Gaithers. He and Gloria had a love for cats and would take in many a stray. Two of their last cats were Bootsy and Bowe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Grace Harke; and his wife, Gloria Harke. Susan Kay Jordan Susan Kay Jordan was born on August 26, 1942 in Rolla, Missouri to Charles and Neva (Vaughn) Hell and passed away on February 17, 2021 at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 18 days. Susan was a 1960 graduate of the Cuba High School. She married Rodney W. Hewkin in 1960. Susan had a long and rewarding career with the Missouri Division of Family Services in Rolla. In July of 1981 she was married to Donald K. Jordan of Rolla, Missouri. They eventually retired in Rolla, Missouri. Susan was known for her sense of humor and her love of animals. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Neva Hell; first husband, Rodney W. Hewkin; and sister, Charlene (Hell) Mace. She is survived by her husband, Don; two children, John Hewkin and wife Lynne and Robin Dixon; step son, Monty Jordan; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren with one more on the way; other relatives and friends. Loretta Lucille Keeney Loretta Lucille Keeney of St. James, Missouri was born July 24, 1935 at Anutt, Missouri to Coy and Lucille Sturgeon Kinder and passed away on February 15, 2021 at the age of 85 years. On January 6, 1966 she married Fred Keeney in St. James, Missouri. Loretta graduated from Rolla High School in 1953. After graduation she attended Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. She studied elementary education and graduated in 1955. She taught in Flag Springs in a two-room schoolhouse from 1955 to 1960. In 1960 Loretta began teaching in St. James at Lucy Wortham James Elementary. She first taught sixth grade for several years before moving to fifth grade. In 1978, she completed her master's degree from Drury University. Loretta taught in the classroom until 1983, then became principal for the elementary. She was the first woman principal at LWJE. After 40 years in the education field, Loretta retired in 1996, enjoying traveling and golfing. Loretta's passion was playing golf. She served many years on the golf course board as secretary and president. She played golf up until 2019 when she finally had to give it up. She was preceded in death by her parents, Coy and Lucille Sturgeon; husband, Fred Keeney on November 9, 1996; one son, Fred Howard Keeney in 1980; and one brother, Vernon Kinder. Maddie, as she was known by her family and friends, was a beautiful happy baby. At the age of 8 months old, she was diagnosed with leukodystrophy (Ears2 disease), which was terminal. Although doctors communicated reasonable expectations for her illness, with so much love and good care she exceeded her life expectancy for the last six years. She loved music, bath time, massages, loud noises and when family and friends came to visit. Her smile was infectious, irresistible, and could brighten the gloomiest days. Gladys Irma Pennock Gladys Irma Pennock of Sullivan, Missouri was born in Bourbon, Missouri on October 16, 1924 to Charles and Lenner (King) Payne and passed away Friday, February 12, 2021 at the age of 96 years. She was united in marriage to James "Elzie" Pennock on June 14, 1940 in Cuba, Missouri. To their union, a son was born, Joseph. Elzie and Gladys made their home in Sullivan, where Gladys was a homemaker and raised their son. After Joe was grown, Gladys was employed by Central Market, offering sample foods to customers. She was an excellent seamstress and made most of her own clothing. Gladys was a Christian lady and had attended Faith Mission Tabernacle in Bourbon for many years. She was the last sibling of the Payne family to pass and will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elzie Pennock; parents, Charles and Lenner Payne; three brothers, Edgar, Joseph and Herman Payne; and six sisters, Kavel Sullivan, Annie Ray, Opal Tourville, Mae Wymer, Virginia Bandy and Golden Miller. "Jim" Shockley of Cuba, Missouri was born on Tuesday, September 19, 1939 in Cuba, Missouri to William C. and Mabel (Golden) Shockley and passed away on Monday, February 15, 2021 at the age of 81 years. Jim married Betsy Ann Yates on February 23, 1963. Jim lived almost his whole life in Cuba, Missouri. He graduated from Cuba High School in 1959. He was a longtime member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Cuba, Past Master of Cuba Lodge #312 A.F. & A.M. He honorably served his country in the United States Army and retired as a lineman for Show-Me Power, after 36 years of dedicated service. Jim and Betsy were camp host for Onondaga Cave State Park for several years. They enjoyed meeting new people and spending some leisure time at the campground. Jim loved to go fishing, gigging, hunting, trimming trees and cutting wood. Virgil Leroy Snelson Virgil Leroy Snelson of St. James, Missouri was born May 6, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles and Lucy (Mathena) Snelson and passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at the age of 79 years. Virgil was well liked, and respected in the community. He was know for his kindness and willingness to help others when they needed it. He enjoyed tinkering with his tractor, and fixing things. He also enjoyed attending, and participating in Civil War re-enactments, throughout the area, until his health no longer permitted. Virgil really enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. In addition to his parents Charles and Lucy Snelson, Virgil was preceded in death by his sister, Charlene Aiple. He is survived by his children, Brian Snelson and wife Penny of St. Louis, Missouri and Dawn Snelson of St. James, Missouri; grandsons, Connor and Duncan Snelson; a host of extended family and friends. Visitation was held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at the St. James Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James, Missouri. Masks and social distancing appreciated. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at the St. James Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James, Missouri with Pastor Frank Brooks officiating. Lynnette "Lynn" Renee Young Lynnette "Lynn" Renee Young was born November 17, 1982 in Farmington Missouri to Gene and Carla (Sellers) Young and passed away on January 8, 2021 at the age of 38 years. Lynn was the youngest of two children and known by many names, such as "our sweet little baby Lynn" by her Grandma Friedrich (up to the age of 12), "Sis," and "my Lynnie Poo Poo" by her Aunt Tina (just last month). Lynn's loving mercy to help others began in high school where she completed her CNA certification. It continued when she was selected into the RN nursing school program immediately following her high school graduation. Lynn's dedication to the health care field was wide-serving. From attending as an EMT in the back of an ambulance, working in the ER and ICU units, to stopping to calm a small child who had been pushed down. She was preceded in death by her best friend, Grandma Sue (Sellers), as well as PawPaw Lonnie (Sellers); grandparents Bob and Daisy Lowe; and cousin, Mandi. She is survived by her parents, Carla and Bren Sellers and Gene and Tina Young; sister, Missy Lopez; brother-in-law, Michael; nephews, Bryce, Miguel, and Ethan; honorary parents, Randy and Tina Parks; her fur baby, "Sadie"; other relatives and friends. Memorial visitation was held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at the Britton Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville Missouri. A Celebration of Life was held at 1 p.m. with Anita Maize officiating and Ron Brodwater sharing prayers. Memories were shared by members of the family and friends. Special music of "Hero," "Jealous of the Angels" and "I Lived" was played. The service was Live-streamed on the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home Facebook page.
