Robert S. Albritton
Robert Albritton, age 92, of Santa Cruz, California died
Tuesday, February 21, 2006. He was born February 19, 1914 in
Minnesota, the son of Elmer Sanford and Mary Eleanor (Bierer)
Albritton.
He was united in marriage on March 14, 1938 in
Minneapolis, Minnesota to Helen Richards, the daughter of Earl and
Sara Richards. They enjoyed 55 years together before Helen passed
away on February 14, 1994.
Robert is survived by two sons, Dr. David Albritton and
wife Phyllis of Santa Cruz, California and Robert Rapp Albritton and
wife Jennifer of Toronto, Canada; three grandchildren, James, David,
and Victoria.
Mr. Albritton was a broker in the insurance industry.
Funeral services for Mr. Albritton were held Thursday
March 2, 2006 in the Steelville Presbyterian Church with the Rev.
Mary Arnold officiating. Music was provided by Delores Bell.
Committal prayers and burial was in the Steelville
Cemetery.
All arrangements were under the direction of the
Britton-Bennett Funeral Home Steelville, Missouri.
Lois Jean Beal
Lois Jean Beal of Cuba, Missouri was born June 11, 1941
at Cherryville, Missouri to the union of Arthur Jefferson Callahan
and Sarah Emiline Harris Callahan and left from this life on Sunday,
March 5, 2006 at Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 64 years, 8 months
and 26 days.
Lois was a loving wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law,
aunt, cousin and friend and she will be deeply missed by all who
knew and loved her.
Lois is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur S. and
Sarah E. Callahan; her first husband, Jim Lea; son, Terry Lea; two
brothers, Landis and wife Alvie Callahan and Arlis and wife Mabel
Callahan; three sisters, Clella and husband Roy Godbey, Stella
Callahan and Bonnie and husband Glen England and one brother-in-law
Delmar Red Martin.
Those who are left to mourn her passing are husband
Walter Beal of Cuba; three step sons, Michael and Kevin Beal of St.
Louis, Missouri and Walter Beal, Jr. of Springfield, Missouri; one
step grandson, Dylan Beal; one sister, Lavada Martin of Steelville,
Missouri; one brother, Rev. Marvin and wife Ruth Callahan of Cuba,
Missouri, and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Visitation was held Tuesday, March 7 from 5-8 p.m. at
Britton Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri. Funeral service was held
Wednesday, March 8 at 2 p.m. at Britton Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri
with Mark Godbey and Larry Martin officiating.
Music was provided by Dave Callahan.
Burial followed in Martin Cemetery, Cherryville,
Missouri. The family is being served by Britton Funeral Home, Cuba,
Missouri.
Fredrick Jospeh Lackner
Frederick Joseph Lackner of Cuba, Missouri was born July 1, 1923 in
Gorenja Loka, Kocevje (Yugoslavia) to the union of Joseph
and Teresa (nee Deutschmann) Lackner and left from this life on
Tuesday, February 28, 2006 in Chesterfield, Missouri at the age of
82 years, 7 months and 27 days.
Fred was united in marriage to the late Grace Lackner
(nee Manne) and to this union two children were born, Linda and
Michael. He then was united in marriage to the late Adeline Eugenia
"Toots" Lackner and then to his wife, Catherine M. Steffen-Lackner
(nee Menz),
Fred was a loving husband, father, step father,
grandfather, step grandfather, great grandfather, step great
grandfather, step son, brother, uncle and friend to all and will be
deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Fred retired from General Motors in 1968 and then went
into home remodeling as a carpenter. He proudly served his country
in the U.S. Army during WW II. He was a member of Holy Cross
Catholic Church and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus
Council 8920 and a member of the Owensville VFW.
Fred spent many hours at Holy Cross working on the
Education Center, the church and the rectory. The biggest project
though was the Knights of Columbus Hall. He was very proud to be
part of the construction and the camaraderie.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and
Teresa Lackner, and one brother Albrecht Lackner and a host of other
relatives.
Those who are left to mourn his passing are: his loving
wife Catherine M. Steffen-Lackner; one daughter, Linda and husband
Hugh McLean; one son, Michael and wife Cynthia (nee Locke) Lackner.
Four step daughters Charlene Goodpasture, Carolyn and
husband John Gibson, Connie and husband Dennis Warden, Christie and
husband Phillip Spinella; one step son, Charles Steffen.
Four grandchildren, Hugh A. Jr. and wife Kathryn McLean,
Christopher S. and wife Cynthia McLean, Edward T. McLean; two great
grandchildren, Hayley A. McLean and Hugh A. McLean, III.
Fourteen step grandchildren Vanessa and husband Ricky
Damouth, Felicity (Shannon Culwell) Goodpasture, Leticia and husband
Ryan Hulse, Greta and husband Justin Hopke, Emily and husband Darren
Davies, Maggie, Danny and Johnny (Kim) Gibson, Jacob, Ethan and
Abigail Warden, Christina, Salvatore and Sophia Spinella. Seven step
great grandchildren, Treyson and Annalynn Culwell, Shelby and Dustin
Davies, Colton Damouth, Eilish and Hannah Gibson; step mother, Marie
Lackner; one sister, Josephine and husband Bill Signoracci.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 from 5-8
p.m. at Britton Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri. Funeral Mass was
celebrated on Thursday, March 2, 2006 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic
Church with Rev. James Finder as the Celebrant. The burial followed
in St. Mary's Cemetery, St. Louis County, Missouri.

Robert "Bob" Lee Land Jr.
Robert "Bob" Land, age 82, passed away Monday, February 27, 2006 at
the Gibbs Care Center in Steelville, Missouri. He was born January 5, 1924
in Granite City, Illinois, the son of Robert Lee and Ruth A. (Burke)
Land Sr.
He was united in marriage to Leota Carr in May 1952 and
she preceded him in death in February 1997.
Bob is survived by his children, Jon I. Carr of
Chesterton, Indiana, Becky L. Mason and husband Dave of Wanatah,
Indiana and Debby J. Adams and husband Michael of Chesterton,
Indiana; four grandsons, Derrick Adams, Joe Radtke, Tom Radtke, and
Mick Radtke; one granddaughter, Natalie Turnbough and husband Chris
and one nephew, Gary Hudson and wife Peggy
He was preceded in death by one son, Jeff A. Land, who
died August 10, 2004, and one daughter, Pam S. Land-Radtke who died
in September 1998; two sisters Roberta Hudson and baby sister
Dorothy Mae Land,
Bob attended Oregon State then transferred to University
of Missouri-Rolla and received his BA in chemical engineering and
received his master from MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Bob began his career in 1950 with U.S. Steel in Gary,
Indiana working though the ranks to superintendent of the chemical
division of U.S. Steel. During his career he traveled to Europe,
Belgium, Denmark, and Germany to work with the company dealing with
coke and battery operation of the steel industry.
After 31 years Bob retired and came back to the family
farm in Steelville. Bob was a Mason of the Hobart, Indiana club,
member of the MSM-UMR Alumni Association, and a die-hard St. Louis
Cardinal fan. He loved to golf, fish, but mostly loved his family
and the family farm which had been in the family for generations.
Bob served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was
proud of the achievement he accomplished as a boy of having perfect
attendance from age five to 18 in the Steelville Presbyterian
Church.
Funeral services for Bob Land were held Thursday, March
2, 2006 in the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry
Beers officiating and a eulogy given by his daughter, Becky Mason.
Special music of "Amazing Grace", "Go Rest High on the
Mountain" and "Wind Beneath my Winds" was provided. Serving as
casket bearers were Jon Carr, Gary Hudson, Dave Mason, Michael
Adams, Tom Radtke, Mick Radtke, and Chris Turnbough with committal
prayers and burial in the Steelville Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri.
All arrangements were under the direction of the
Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville, Missouri.
Vernon Key Palmer
Vernon Key Palmer of Steelville, Missouri passed away on
Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at Phelps County Regional Hospital, Rolla,
Missouri at the age of 95 years, 2 months and 1 day.
In this sad time, his family would like to celebrate his
tremendous life. All those fortunate enough to have known him will
recall a loving husband and father, skilled restaurateur and
lion-hearted democrat.
Palmer was born in Steelville on Saturday, December 31,
1910. As a young man, he worked for the Rural Electrification
Administration, hanging some of the first electric highlines in
rural America. He also was one of the original "ground hogs" of the
Steelville Presbyterian Church (a group of young boys who dug the
basement beneath the church with a scoop and mule) and they set the
tradition of the ground hog supper held yearly on ground hog day at
the church in honor and memory of their hard work.
He married Goldie Mae Turnbough in 1946 and had three
sons, John, Terry and Ted. Soon after his marriage, he found his
true calling as a restaurateur, owning and managing the Spare Rib
Inn in Steelville and The Skillet Café in Rolla for nearly 50 years
before retiring in 1977.
If he was not cooking, Palmer could be found in Colorado
where he traveled for more than 20 years to go elk hunting with
friends. In his later years, he frequented local events with his
funnel cake wagon, and was often seen adorned in an apron.
Palmer was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert
Palmer; mother, Blanche Key Palmer; brothers, Doyle and Ralph
Palmer; and sister Norma Lee, all of Steelville, Missouri.
He is survived by his wife, Goldie of Steelville,
Missouri; sons John Palmer and wife Martha of Rolla, Missouri, Terry
Palmer and wife Brenda, and Ted Palmer and wife Donna, all of
Steelville, Missouri. He is also survived by eight grandchildren;
four great grandchildren and his beloved dog, Penny.
Visitation was held Thursday, March 2, 2006 from 5-8
p.m. at Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Funeral service was Friday, March 3, 2006 at 11 a.m. at
Steelville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Mary Arnold, Pastor Jerry
Beers and Rev. Willis Callahan officiating. Music selections were
"Take Me Home, Country Road" by Josh Gibbs on the guitar and
"Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross" sung by Jill McWilliams
accompanied by Jack Palmer.
Burial at Steelville Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri with
pallbearers Alan Beers, Tim Turnbough, Eddie McWilliams, Eddie
Palmer, Jack Palmer and Junior Callahan.
All arrangements under the direction of the Hutson
Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Marjorie Jessie Weaver
Marjorie Jessie (Greig) Weaver, 85, died February 25, 2006, at
the Hillsboro Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Hillsboro, Illinois.
Marjorie was born March 28, 1920, in Alley Spring,
Missouri, to Jona and Ruth (Dillon) Greig. She grew up in
Summersville, Missouri, where her parents operated a general store.
She graduated from Summersville High School in 1938 and attended
Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University and Drury
College (class of 1942) where she majored in history and minored in
English.
During her college years her parents moved to
Steelville, Missouri and operated Greig's Store. She was a member
of Kappa Delta and Eastern Star, and was a fine musician, playing
both piano and violin. She taught school in Willow Springs and
Summersville, Missouri, and worked for the Veteran's Administration
in Kansas City.
Marjorie married Maxwell T. Weaver in 1946 at the First
Baptist Church in Steelville, Missouri. They lived in Kansas City,
Springfield, and Joplin, Missouri, Fort Worth, Texas, and St. Louis
before retiring to the Lake of the Ozarks in 1984. Mr. Weaver was a
pilot for Ozark Airlines and they were frequent travelers. He
preceded her in death in 1993. In 2002 she moved to Hillsboro,
Illinois, to be near two daughters, and she became a member of the
First Presbyterian Church of Hillsboro.
Marjorie is survived by three daughters, Judith (husband
Wayne) Failoni of St. Louis, Dr. Patricia (husband Michael)
Whitworth and Nancy Baker of Hillsboro, Illinois, and Thomas (wife
Kimberly) Weaver of Columbia, Illinois.
Nine grandchildren, Melissa and Kristen Wargin and
Marjorie Failoni of St. Louis, Allyson Whitworth of Hillsboro,
Illinois, and Victoria, Dillon, Sydney, Joshua, and Jennifer Weaver
of Columbia, Illinois; one aunt, Dollie Kuncel of Salem Missouri.
Sisters-in-law, Nina Greig of Steelville, Missouri, and
Glenda Horn of Seattle, Washington; brothers-in-law, Bob Weaver and
Benny Weaver of Washington state; many nieces, great nieces, great
nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents,
her brother, Jona R. Greig, and her sister, Maxine Aiken.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 4, 2006,
at James & Gahr Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri, with the Rev.
H. Matthew Ferguson officiating. Eulogies were given by Melissa
Wargin, Allyson Whitworth, Thomas Weaver, and Michael Whitworth.
Special music of "How Great Thou Art," "In the Garden,"
and "The Lord's Prayer" was provided by soloists Marjorie Failoni
and Peter Gosik.
Pallbearers included the following nephews and cousins:
Laverne Greig, Don Hale, Paul Hale, Martin Hart, Tom Dillon, Neil
McNeill, David Sterling and Mike Bielski. Burial was in the St.
James Cemetery.
Francis E. Wood
Francis E. Wood "Woody", a long time resident of the
Enumclaw, Washington area, passed away February 27, 2006 at the
Evergreen Enumclaw Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was 87.
He was born in Webb, near Holley, Colorado on March 5,
1918 and lived for several years in Cuba, Missouri. Wherever he
went, he always kept his subscription to the Cuba Free Press. He
served in the US Army during WWII and the Korean War.
Francis met his wife Mary Jane Spindlow, while she was a
missionary in Korea and Japan. They were married in Japan on July
21, 1951. After his discharge from the Army at Fort Lewis, he went
to work for Boeing and retired in 1983.
He enjoyed fishing and camping. Woody also had a
woodworking shop where he spent many hours. He is survived by his
wife of 54 years, Mary Jane Wood of the home; sons, David Wood of
Bonney Lake, Washington, Daniel Wood of Olympia, Washington;
daughters, Mary Cunningham of Buckley, Washington, Rebecca Elder of
Enumclaw, Washington, Susan Bianchi of Belleville, New Jersey and
Cindy Wood of Phoenix, Arizona.
Seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Friday, March 3, 2006 at 1
p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park in Enumclaw, Washington with a
memorial service at 2 p.m. at Wabash Presbyterian Church in Auburn,
Washington.
Service was directed by Weeks' Enumclaw Funeral Home.
