MO Local Obituaries for the Week of March 15, 2001 Cartha Ray Dickey Cartha Ray Dickey was born Saturday, June 21, 1913 in Breathitt County, Kentucky to the late Will Dickey and Celia Watkins Dickey and departed this life Saturday, March 30, 2001 at the Phelps County Memorial Hospital in Rolla, Mo. at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 10 days. Cartha married Lydia "Marie" Deaton on August 13, 1938 in Crawfordsville, IN and they made their home together for these 62 years. Cartha served his country in the United States Army beginning on March 15, 1942 and received an honorable discharge on October 16, 1945 achieving the rank of Private First Class. There he received the Good Conduct Medal as well as the Eamc Ribbon, and the marksmanship badge. Cartha specialized as a Telephone Switch Board Operator during this time and served out his induction in Iran as well as in the United States. Cartha accepted the Lord early in life and was a Member of a Presbyterian church in Kentucky. Cartha was a member of the Davisville American Legion Post #601; he enjoyed hunting and fishing, making wine and gardening. He will be remembered by his friends and family for the large watermelons he grew. Cartha is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Roy Dickey, and Archie Dickey, two sisters, Anna Dickey, and Elsie Marshall. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his loving wife Lydia Marie Dickey of the home, his brothers-in-law Robert E. Deaton and wife Nyguen (pronounced "Win") and Edmond Chasteen, all of the state of California; and his sisters-in-law Dorliss Deaton and Nina Mcintire, all of the state of Indiana. Nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends, all will fondly remember and sadly miss Cartha Ray Dickey. Visitation: American Legion Services; and funeral services were held Monday, March 5, 2001, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with visitation from 6 p.m. until American Legion Service at 7 p.m. and funeral service following at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Delmar B. Hutson officiating. Kathy Atkins sang Amazing Grace, and Just a Closer Walk With Thee, accompanied by Janie James on the piano. Pallbearers were Scott Marshal, Will Marshall, Richard Marshall, Bob Marshall, Travis Byerly and Gene Kinder.
