On August 14, 1971 in St. Louis, Missouri he married Ruby Haffer. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army and graduated from the Missouri University of Columbia. Bill was a member and attended Maplewood Baptist Church. He was also a member of the VFW Post #6 in the St. Louis area. Bill was employed as a fire investigator for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lucy Mae Barman; two sons, Gene "Elgie" Gowers and Gary Gowers; one infant daughter, Janice Carol Gowers; one sister, Barbara Barman; brothers-in-law, Archie Haffer, Claude Haffer, Raymond Haffer and John Doss; and sisters-in-law, Wanetta Haffer, Hallie McConnell, Melba Doss and Gladys Hammond. He is survived by his son, David (Cielo) Gowers of St. Louis, Missouri; one brother, John Barman of St. Louis, Missouri; brother-in-law, Floyd "Bud" Haffer of St. James, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Ruth Thomas of St. Louis, Missouri and Fern (Bob) McClain of Steelville, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 with Jeannie Barman officiating. Special music of "Wayfaring Stranger" was sung by Norma Thomas. Other music of "Moonlight Bay" and "Colorado Sunset" was played. Interment was in the Haffer Family Cemetery in Steelville, Missouri. Bonnie E. Bouse Bonnie E. Bouse of Bourbon, Missouri was born July 27, 1924 in Bourbon, Missouri to Walter and Florence (Jones) Pennock and passed away Sunday, March 15, 2020 at the age of 95 years. She grew up in Dowler Mill, just outside of Bourbon, Missouri. Bonnie married Woodrow Bouse on April 8, 1945 at Bourbon, Missouri. Through the years, Bonnie and Woodrow lived at Anthonies Mill, near the Meramec River on Thickety Ford Road and on the Sprinkle farm in Leasburg, Missouri. However, after Woodrow's passing in 1988 Bonnie made her way back to her original neighborhood and home place in Dowler Mill. Bonnie enjoyed quilting, sewing and seamstress work all through her life. She also enjoyed gardening and canning, flowers and cooking. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow L. Bouse; parents, Walter and Florence Pennock; one granddaughter, Rita Kaysinger; daughter-in-law, Eunice Bouse; and two brothers, Asa and Zane Pennock. Leona Carrie Mason Heitsch Leona Carrie Mason Heitsch was born on January 6, 1931 to Russell Mason and Margaret Arnold Mason and passed away on December 30, 2019 at the age of 88 years, 11 months and 24 days. She attended a one room school in Walnut Lake and was recommended to attend University of Michigan, where she graduated (first in her family) with a BS in Chemistry. She traveled to Montery, California where she married classmate Charlie, avoiding a previously arranged employment at White Sands. Leona assisted Charles in his Russian Studies and supported him in his service during the Korean war. Their fourth child born with deafness and autism well before the public schools were required to serve all children with disabilities. Charles and Leona refused to institutionalize their son, but continued with private payment for diagnosis and education and multiple family relocation needed to maximize their son's ability (see Leona's book "Toward Wanting More"'). In Wilmington, Delaware, she demonstrated her support of Equal Rights by caring for marchers children, sewing clothing for impoverished children of the south and letter writing. Forced to move to St. Louis, Missouri to access education for her non-verbal nine year old child, Leona continued her letter writing, poetry, gardening, tutoring of deaf and autistic son and child raising - while serving the greater St. Louis school for the deaf as a secretary and teachers assistant. In later years, retired on her Bourbon, Missouri "Pea Ridge" farm, Leona was happy to publish her environmental and philosophical poems, grow heirloom variety apples, tutor disabled children and collect local family stories. She cared for her husband thru eight years of dementia, developed many health issues and in last years moved to Wisconsin to be was cared for by her daughter Grace. She was proceeded in death by her son, Charles William; husband, Charles Wheyend; and her parents, Russell and Margaret Mason. She is survived by her children, Russell Dawson, Carrie Jane, Grace Margaret, and Irene Angela; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. She was interred in the family plot in Washburn, Wisconsin after a small family service. Alma Katherine Marshall Alma Katherine Marshall (nee Halbert) of St. Charles, Missouri was born April 1, 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri to Eddie Joshua and Mabel Florence Lewis Halbert and passed away Thursday, March 19, 2020 at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 18 days. On February 14, 1959 in Columbia, Missouri Alma married Jesse Marshall Sr. Alma graduated from University of Missouri Columbia and had been a Home Economics teacher in the St. Charles Public Schools. She was a member of the Faith Methodist Church in St. Charles, Missouri. Alma enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking and fishing. She also loved traveling and camping in every state and many places in Europe. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and Mabel Halbert. She is survived by her husband of almost 61 years, Jesse Marshall Sr. of St. Charles, Missouri; one son, Jesse Marshall Jr. of Steelville, Missouri; one daughter, Beth (Mike) Frohbieter of Fenton, Missouri; one brother, Lewis (Orien) Halbert of Billings, Missouri; three grandchildren, Nathan (Heather) Frohbieter, Matthew (Ashlee) Frohbieter and Emily (Brian) Pelham; other relatives and friends. Florence Mae Nixon Florence Mae Nixon of Cuba, Missouri was born on January 27, 1921 in Anthonies Mill, Missouri to Charles A. and Julia A. (Record) Jenkerson and passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at the age of 99 years. As a young girl, Florence often rode to school on the back of her brother's horse. At age 13, Florence graduated from the eighth grade. A student excelling in her studies, especially spelling and math, she was asked to stay on another year to assist the teacher. At age 14, the owner of the little store in Anthonies Mill, (also known as the Kimberlin General Store), hired her to single-handedly run his business, while he attended to his farm. As a young adult, she moved into a boarding house in Bourbon, Missouri and was hired at the Bourbon Cap Factory, where she met Francis. After only three months of dating, Florence married Francis M. Nixon in 1941. As newlyweds their lives were tested by Francis' severe bout with spinal meningitis. After Francis' early brush with death, she was even more grateful for their time together. Florence became an incredible cook, but not without practice. As a young wife, she went from throwing pie crust up against the wall in frustration, to cooking the entire Thanksgiving Dinner for many years (into her 80's) for her large extended family. At 95 she made her last homemade chocolate cake for a family gathering. In her love of nature, Florence took great pride in her yard. She also tended a lush garden filled with many vegetables. One of her favorite pastimes was to drives through the countryside where she would pick wildflowers alongside the road to take back home. Mothering her children through childhood illnesses and all the trials and tribulations of growing up, Florence also became the caretaker of her own mother for three years, and cared for Francis when he became ill with cancer. She embodied the scripture: "Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, is not boastful, is not arrogant, is not rude, is not self-seeking, is not irritable, and does not keep a record of wrongs. Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends." She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Julia Jenkerson; one sister, Helen Peterson; one brother, Charles Jenkerson; and her husband, Francis Nixon. She is survived by her three children, Linda and husband Tom Isaacs of St. James, Missouri, Terry Nixon of Columbia, Missouri and Julia Ann and husband Edward Krovicka of St. Louis, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Kelly and husband Troy Schneider, Tara Obrigewitch, Christy and husband Bill Hahn, Zachary and wife Beth Nixon, Maury and husband Brett Horton, Jeremiah and wife Mei-Ling Isaacs and Ian Greenlee; one sister, Frances Prince of Chesterfield, Missouri; 11 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. William "Bill" Franklin Powers William "Bill" Franklin Powers of Cherryville, Missouri was born on Thursday, March 22, 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri to James Everett and Myrtle Lulu (McKinnon) Powers and passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at the age of 74 years, 11 months and 26 days. Bill graduated from Cuba High School and immediately joined the United States Army where he served honorably. He had accepted the Lord and was a member of St. James VFW #5608. He married Denise Lynn Miller on Monday, December 31, 1984 in Steelville, Missouri. Bill was a tree trimmer at McDonald's Tree Service for over 25 years, then he and Denise ran their own business, D&B General Contractors until 1993. He enjoyed working on cars and fishing. He loved his dogs, especially his little dog, Jasmine. Walter Edward Reimer Walter Edward Reimers of Leasburg, Missouri was born on February 28, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri to Walter C. and Clara (Greishaber) Reimers and passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at his home at the age of 86 years. Walter married Lorraine L. Deschaine on November 26, 1955 in Houlton, Maine. Walter honorably served his country in United States Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from McDonnell-Douglas as a parts inspector, after 32 years of dedicated service. He spent many countless hours and days mentoring, coaching, refereeing and judging Amateur Boxing in St. Louis, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Clara Reimers; wife, Lorraine Reimers; and one daughter, Lori Reimers. Frank Paul Shasserre Jr. Frank Paul Shasserre Jr. of Cuba, Missouri was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Frank Peter and Helen Marie Meyer Shasserre on June 28, 1925 and passed away on Friday, March 20, 2020 at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 22 days. Frank married Georgetta Kamler in Cuba, Missouri on October 10, 1945. During World War II Frank served his country in the United States Army.He was a charter member of the American Legion Post #522 and a charter member of the DAV Chapter #65. Frank continued his support of fellow veterans by being an active member of both organizations. Frank moved to Cuba, Missouri at the age of five and went on to establish the Shasserre Turkey Farm with his father. He made a lifelong career working his family farm. Serving his community, Frank was a 4-H community and project leader for more than 30 years with the Lone Star 4-H Club. Through 4-H he and his wife influenced the lives of many youth in our area. Frank and Georgetta's marriage was strong for over 67 years until her passing in 2013. Frank enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, woodworking and being in the outdoors. Ameuel Young Ameuel Young of Steelville, Missouri was born on Monday, August 16, 1926 in Rives, Missouri to George Washington and Gracie Maude Young and passed away on Monday, March 16, 2020 at the age of 93 years and 7 months. Ameuel grew up near Hornersville, Missouri and attended Cotton Plant School. He joined the United States Navy where he served honorably and was a World War II Veteran. Ameuel married Nola Inez Hart on November 28, 1949 in Piggott, Arkansas. Ameuel worked at Ford Motor Co. He was a member of United Auto Works Local #325 and Potosi Southern Baptist Church. Ameuel loved to go to flea markets, work on the farm and on classic cars. He loved his dog, Willie.
