MO Local Obituaries for the Week of April 2, 2003 George Lester Bast George Lester Bast of Cuba, Mo. to the union of Hubert and Minnie Bast (nee Ossing) and passed away on March 25, 2003 at the Cuba Manor of Cuba, Mo. at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 10 days. On November 4, 1933 George was united in marriage to Berenice Daehn at Fenton, Mo. In April of 1934 they moved to Cuba, Mo. where he built them a new home in 1966 that Berenice still lives in today. They enjoyed almost 70 years together. Lester was a very talented man. Not only did he build their home, he was also a well known mechanic. When first moving to Cuba, he worked with his brother-in-law as a mechanic until later becoming self-employed. Lester was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Minnie Bast; one son, George Bast, Jr.; two daughters, Virginia and Jean Bast; mother-in-law, Anna Daehn; brother, Fred Bast and wife Erna; sisters, Hattie Pink and husband Raleigh and Myrtle Fancher and husband Lloyd; brother-in-law, Frank Daehn; sisters-in-law, Eileen Hollrah and husband Melvin and Norma Daehn. Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his loving wife, Berenice Bast of Cuba; ten children and their spouses, Eugene Bast and Don Bast and wife Linda of Cuba, Mo., Gerard Bast of Black Jack , Mo., Bill Bast and wife Nancy of Snellville, Georgia, Larry Bast and wife Julie of Nixa, Mo., Charles Bast and wife Suzanne of Winchester, Kentucky, Sister Rose Bast of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Joan Viril and husband Leonardo, Vera Maschek and husband Joe, and Kay Bast, all of Kansas City, Mo., daughter-in-law Joan Bast of Rolla, Mo., one sister, Mildred Steidemann and husband Gene of Fenton, Mo., and brother-in-law, Walter Daehn of Cuba, Mo.; 19 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren; other relatives, and many friends. Lester was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and dear friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Lester Bast was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Cross Church, Cuba, Mo. with Father James Finder officiating. Interment was in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Cuba. Memorials to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee or to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Bonnie Jane England Bonnie Jane England (nee Callahan) was born Friday, October 21, 1938 at Cherryville, Mo., a daughter of the late Arthur Monroe Callahan and Sarah Emiline (Harris) Callahan. She departed this life Thursday, March 27, 2003 at the Cuba Manor, Cuba, Mo., at the age of 64 years, 5 months and 6 days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Arlis Callahan and Landis Callahan, two sisters, Stella Callahan and Cella Godbey and one daughtier, Glenda (England) Bridges. Among those who remain to mourn her passing are three sons and eight daughters, Alberta Sue Estes and husband Larry, Dennis Cox and Pamela, Connie Richardson and husband Greg, Cindy Radford and husband Phillip, Mike McKellips and wife Tonya, Michelle White and husband Alan, Curtis England and wife Shelly, Gayla Eaton and husband Joe, Ginger England and Mike Quinton, Gwen England and Andy Helms; two step-sons, Stacy England and Steve England; one brother, Rev. Martin Callahan and wife Ruth; two sisters, Lavada Martin and Lois Beal and husband Walt; forty-four grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Bonnie Callahan lay in state after 6 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2003, at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, in the Britton Chapel with Rev. Marvin Callahan officiating. David Callahan provided special music. Committal prayers and interment were in Martin Cemetery, Cherryville, Mo. Serving as pallbearers were Jeff Buckner, Albert Cox, Kelly England, Scott Grady, Kyle Radford, Mike Summers, Adam West, and Larry White. Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Duane McClain Duane McClain of California was born on July 9, 1933 to the union of Alvin McClain and Leora Eddington McClain at Sioux City, Iowa and passed away in California on March 21, 2003 at the age of 69 years, 8 months and 12 days. On September 18, 1954 he was united in marriage to Rena Happel at the Presbyterian Church in Steelville, Mo. Two sons, Michael and John, and one daughter, Sheryl were born to this union. They were happily married until Rena preceded Duane in death on January 17, 1992. Duane was also preceded in death by his parents and one son, Michael McClain. Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his loving daughter Sherry Mandell and husband Robert; one son John McClain and wife Louise; one brother, Ray McClain and wife Betty; sisters-in-law Lorraine Happel and Opal Gestring; two grandchildren; nephews; nieces; other relatives and friends. Graveside services for Duane McClain were held on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at the Kinder Cemetery, Cuba, Mo. at 10 a.m. with Gary Mace officiating. Interment was in the Kinder Cemetery, Cuba, Mo. All local arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Martha Palmer Williams Martha Palmer Williams of Cuba, Mo. passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2003 at the age of 89 years. She is survived by her sons, Rex Williams (Kathleen) of Sullivan, Mo., Kenneth Williams (Mary) of Florissant, Mo., Max Williams (Ruth) of Springfield, Illinois, and Harry Williams (Barbara) of Florissant, Mo.; one sister-in-law Margie Palmer of Cuba, Mo.; 18 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 17 great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services for Martha Palmer Williams were held at Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Mo. at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2003. Interment at the Jadwin Cemetery, Salem, Mo. Visitation was at the Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Mo. from 6-9 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003.
