Local Obituaries for the Week of April 4, 2002
David Willard Brown, Sr.
David Willard Brown, Sr. of St. Louis, Mo. was born on May 7, 1930 to the
union of George Brown and Della Gott Brown in Cuba, Mo. and passed away on
March 28, 2002 at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 21 days.
On January 14, 1956 he was united in marriage to Justine Heil at Meredith,
Mississippi. To this union five children were born, Sharon, Paul, David,
Tamme and Lisa. They were happily married until her death.
David was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Justine Brown.
He was a member of the Mason's Local 527. David was also a member of the
Ladue Village Lutheran Church.
Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his loving sons
Paul Brown and wife Candy; David Brown and wife Tara; his loving daughters,
Sharon Roberts, Tamme Brown, and Lisa Ferguson; two brothers, Cecil Brown
and Everett Brown; four sisters, Grace Littrell, Gladys Smart, Mamie McCann
and Velva McPherson; four grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
David was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a good friend
to all who knew him and will be sadly missed.
Graveside services were held on Monday, April 1, 2002 at 12 noon at the
Lickcreek Cemetery, Cuba, Mo. with Rev. Rick Dablemont officiating.
Interment was in the Lickcreek Cemetery, Cuba, Mo. All arrangements were
under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo.
Ronald D. Mathews
Ronald Day Mathews was born on October 12, 1950 in St. Louis, Mo. to Lilmon
Bud Mathews and Juanita McGinnis Mathews. He passed away at Phelps County
Regional Hospital on March 21, 2002 at the age of 51 years, 5 months and 9
days.
Ronald served his country in the United States Army from 1969-1972 during
the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged.
Ron enjoyed being with his family, grandchildren and spending time on the
river. He also was a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV)
organization.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Donald Ray and
Edward Leroy Mathews.
Those who remain to mourn his passing are his dear wife Nancy of the home;
his daughter Heather Mathews of Bend, Oregon; step-daughter Pam Mathews and
husband Butch of Cuba, Mo. and Janet Thunder of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one
step-son Ronald Joseph Thunder of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one sister Donna
K. Lewis and husband Ron of Cuba, Mo.; thirteen grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends all
who will sadly miss and fondly remember Ronald D. Mathews.
Visitation was held Saturday, March 23, 2002 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at
Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba, Mo.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 23, 2002 at 1 p.m. with Bro.
Eric Smith officiating.
Burial was in the Turnbough Cemetery in Davisville, Mo. with pallbearers
Thai Mathews, Butch Mathews, Bill Maddox, Ron Lewis, Lilmon Mathews, III,
and Ron Granroos.
All arrangements are under the direction of Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Mo.
Memorials are suggested to the family for funeral expenses.
Esther Mabel Nausley
Esther Mabel nee Homfeldt Nausley was born on December 2, 1907 at Oak Hill,
Mo. She was the daughter of Henry and Mary Margaret (Merk) Homfeldt. She
passed away at the Gibbs Care Center in Steelville, Mo. on Wednesday, March
20, 2002 at the age of 94 years, 3 months and 18 days.
Esther's early years were spent on the family farm at Oak Hill. As a young
woman, she moved to Sullivan, Mo. where she met her future husband. She was
united in marriage to Roy Leon Nausley in St. Louis, Mo. on December 22,
1933. One daughter, Margaret Emma, was born to this marriage. Esther and
her family lived in Sullivan, Owensville, and on the family farm at Oak
Hill.
In addition to serving her family as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother,
and homemaker, she worked for the International Shoe Company in Sullivan
and also for the Brown Shoe Company in Owensville.
Upon retirement they returned to Sullivan, and after Mr. Nausley's death in
1979, Esther moved to Steelville. She was a longtime member of the First
Baptist Church in Sullivan.
She is survived by one daughter, Margaret James and husband, Richard of
Steelville; three grandchildren, Karen Collins and husband, Bevan, of
Guisborough, England, Kathryn James of Fairfax, Virginia, and Richard R.
James and wife, Pamela, of O'Fallon, Mo.
Four great-grandchildren, Charles and Stephen Collins and Kristin and
Bethany James; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Nausley was preceded in death
by two brothers, Arthur and Earl Souders, one sister, Lenora Dunton, and
one infant great-grandson, Joshua Leo Collins.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2002 from
the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Paul Gray
officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Pallbearers who served were Richard R. James, Charles Collins, Robert
McMillian, Glenn Connor, Ted Pate, Dennis Dunton and Eric Schmidt.
Visitation was from 5 until 8 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 until the time of
service at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
Vera J. Shatsar
Vera J. Shatsar was born on October 20, 1929 at St. Louis, Mo. to the union
of Edward Hofmeister and Ann Hartmann Hofmeister and passed away on March
21, 2002 at her home in Indian Hills Lake, Cuba, Mo. at the age of 72
years, 5 months and 1 day.
On August 2, 1947 Vera was united in marriage to Ludy Shatsar at Walnut
Ridge, Arkansas, one son, Ronald, and four daughters, Linda, Susan, Tammy
and Beverly were born to this union. Vera and Ludy had been happily married
for 49 years until his death on November 11, 1996.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ludy Shatsar, son Ronald
E. Shatsar, Sr. and son-in-law, John Roberts.
She and Ludy retired and moved to this community in 1987. She was an avid
bowler and loved to dance.
Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her four
daughters, Linda Roberts, Susan Nachor, Tammy Stanley and husband Mark, and
Beverly Soliman and husband George; one brother Edward Hofmeister and wife
Doris; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many
friends.
Vera was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother,
sister, a good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed.
Vera J. Shatsar was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. where
funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at 11 a.m. with Rev.
Mike Hannah officiating. Interment was in the Kinder Cemetery, Cuba, Mo.
All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of
Cuba, Mo.
