MO Local Obituaries for the Week of April 5, 2001 Randall Bacon Randall Lee Bacon, 85, of Sullivan, passed away at his home in Sullivan on Thursday, March 22, 2001. He was born at Bourbon, August 31, 1915, the son of Cebert and Mabel (Garrett) Bacon. Mr. Bacon lived most of his life in the Sullivan area. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. On October 5, 1940, he was united in marriage to Frana M. Sherman at Fredericktown, Mo. She preceded him in death on January 3, 1997. Randall and Frana had one son, Randy. Mr. Bacon's vocation was that of a commercial truck driver for various companies. He last drove for Peterson Oil Company in Sullivan, a position he held for 30 years. He was a 50-year member of the Sullivan Oddfellows Lodge #156 in Sullivan and a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Mr. Bacon was instrumental in starting the Sullivan Volunteer Fire Department which he joined in 1938 and was active in his duties until his death. His membership in the department spanned 63 years, and he was quite possibly the longest serving active volunteer firefighter in the State of Missouri, if not the nation. He was honored by the Sullivan department in February 1996 when Ladder Truck #812 was dedicated in his honor. A beloved comrade of the fire district, he will be affectionately remembered for his contributions and unwavering service to the Sullivan community. Mr. Bacon found pleasure in the game of golf. A charter member of the Sullivan Country Club, he was the club's golf champion in 1971 and won many tournament trophies. He managed the pro shop for a number of years, and chaired many tournaments. He is survived by his son, Randy and wife Doris of Sullivan; three sisters, Mabel King and husband Don, and Mary Sue Walte and husband, Tauno, of Sullivan, and Betty Farrar of the state of Iowa; two grandchildren, Stacey Tyree and husband, Lance, Eric Bacon and wife, Jill, of Orlando, Florida; five great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Callee and Blane Tyree, and Joshua and Benjamin Bacon, plus other relatives and a host of friends. A loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and cousin, he will be sorely missed. Along with his parents and his wife, Frana, Mr. Bacon was preceded in death by two brothers, Bud and Bert Bacon and two sisters, Thelma Davis and Lily McConnell. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, from Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan with the Rev. Dr. Bart Hildreth officiating. As a special tribute to Mr. Bacon, volunteer firemen stood as honor guards at the casket during visitation Friday evening, Saturday morning and during the funeral service. Volunteer firemen attended both visitation and the service as a body, and six firemen served as pallbearers. Ladder truck #812 led the procession to the Sullivan I.O.O.F. Cemetery for interment, followed by truck #810 which carried the casket. Following the interment service led by Dr. Hildreth, the Final Call for Volunteer Fireman Randall Bacon was led by Fire District Chief Korver as the firemen stood at attention. A KSDK Channel 5 news crew filmed the services and paid tribute to Randall Bacon on Saturday evening and Sunday morning news broadcasts. Memorials to Grace United Methodist Church are preferred by the family. The Bacon family was served by the Eaton Funeral Home. Lewis Blackwell Lewis (Doc) Blaine Blackwell, D.V.M., of Owensville, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City. He was 77 years old. He was born April 16, 1923, in Red Bird, Mo., a son of Byron and Nola Beckham Blackwell. He married Margery Pierce on December 24, 1947, in St. James, Mo., and she survives. In addition to his wife Margery, he is also survived by one son, Randy Blackwell and his wife Deidre of Grapevine, Texas; one daughter, Denise Jennings and her husband Mark of Lawrenceville, Georgia; two grandchildren, Krista and Matthew Jennings; four step-grandchildren, Will and Katie Cameron and Bryan and Kevin Higdon; two brothers, Leonard Blackwell, St. James and Bob Blackwell, Owensville; four sisters, Novella Shockley, Owensville, Ruth Baumann, St. Louis, Reba Jett of Modesto, California, and Arletta Smith, Overland Park, Kansas; brothers-in-law; and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by one son, Dr. Ron Blackwell; one brother, LaRue Blackwell; one sister, Ruby Sotolar; and one sister in infancy, Lillie Mae. Mr. Blackwell served in the Army during World War II. He served the Gasconade County area as a Veterinarian from 1954 to 1992. He was a member of the Bledsoe-Bulas V.F.W., the Missouri Veterinary Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association. Services were held at 2:00 Wednesday, March 28, at Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville, with Terry Knight officiating. Burial was in the Countryside Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements were made under the direction of Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville. Rolla Frederick Fick Rolla Frederick Fick, son of Oscar and Bertha (Steines) Fick, was born September 29, 1912 in Gumbo, Mo. After having a stroke in June 1997, he resided at Cuba Manor for two years. He departed this life at Missouri Baptist Hospital, Sullivan, Mo. on March 29, 2001 at 88 years and 6 months. Rolla and Elda Schulte were united in marriage on February 6, 1938 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Grover, Mo. and later had two children. They lived in Ellisville for a year, during which time Rolla drove an oil truck for Dixon Oil Company. In 1939, they moved to Grover, where Rolla started his own business, Rolla Fick Oil Company. Rolla worked as an oil jobber for forty-one years with Sinclair and Texaco Oil Companies. In the early 1980's, Rolla and Elda retired, sold their business, and moved to Cuba to live in Indian Hills. Rolla was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Grover where he was baptized November 10, 1912 and confirmed, May 3, 1926. He served God and his church as an Elder and on the Church Council and always made time to help out with the many numerous activities that made his life of faith meaningful for himself and others. In addition, he was active in men's clubs both at church and at Indian Hills and was a member of the Lion's Club International for over twenty-five years. In November of 1990, Rolla and Elda joined St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cuba. Rolla was preceded in death by his parents. His survivors include his wife, Elda; daughter Karen Stettes of Morland, Kansas; grandchildren Steve, Mark and his wife Teresa, and Maureen Stettes; daughter Donna Wright and her husband Robert of Fort Myers, Florida; grandchildren Doug and David and his wife Susan and great-grandson Alex Wright; sisters Erma Langewisch and Melva Rauscher. Rolla was an avid fisherman and loved life to the fullest. His family was of utmost importance to him and he early loved them all and was proud of their many accomplishments. He will be missed by his family and all those who knew and loved him in return. Rolla Frederick Fick was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. on Saturday, March 31, 2001 after 2 p.m. Visitation was held on Sunday, April 1, 2001 at the Schrader Funeral Home of St. Louis, Mo. after 2 p.m. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 2, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Grover, Mo. with Rev. Roger Schnakenberg officiating. Interment was in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Grover, Mo. Memorials to the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Cuba, Mo. All local arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Martha B. Hartman Martha B. Hartman nee Briggeler of Cuba, Mo. was born on June 1, 1915 in St. Louis, Mo. to the union of Oscar Briggeler and Anna Briggeler nee Deutsch and passed away March 23, 2001 at Cuba, Mo. at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 22 days. On September 21, 1935 Martha was united in marriage to George William Hartman. One daughter, Donna, and one son, Donald George, were born to this union. Martha and George were happily married until he preceded her in death on October 24, 1977. Martha was also preceded in death by her parents and one son, Donald George Hartman. Martha was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church of Bourbon, Mo. until she transferred her membership to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Cuba, Mo., Charter Member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 456 of Leasburg, Mo., member of the Extension Clubs and Democrat Club. Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her loving daughter Donna Elders; three granddaughters, Jennifer Elders, Rebecca Kiesel and husband Phil and Rachel Halbert; two grandsons, Brian Kiesel and Devin Halbert; other relatives and many friends. Martha was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Martha B. Hartman nee Briggeler was in state at the Briton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. where American Legion Services by American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 456 of Leasburg, Mo. at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 25, 2001 was held immediately followed by a Prayer Service conducted by Father George Kramer. Funeral services were held on Monday, March 26, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Cuba, Mo. with Rev. Roger Schnakenberg officiating. Pallbearers were Charlie Hartman, Robert McDonald, Robert Hartman, Jerry "Ted" Thomas, Greg Thomas and Ed Behr. Interment was in the St. Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo. Viola Alice Hoyer Viola Alice Hoyer nee Bush was born on Monday, September 25, 1911 in St. Louis, Mo. to Laurence Earl Bush and Stella Beck Bush. She departed this life on Saturday, March 24, 2001 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan, Mo. at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 27 days. Alice was united in marriage to Gordon Leo Hoyer in Steelville, Mo. on June 2, 1931, and to this union two children were born. Alice was of the Methodist faith. She attended Cuba United Methodist Church after moving here in 1948 from St. Louis County. She was active in PTA when her children were in school. Alice liked to cook and grow lovely flowers, and collect Angels. She also was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Alice worked as a waitress for many years. She also worked for Shanklin Funeral Home in Cuba for 20 years. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one son, Gordon L. "Sonny" Hoyer. Those who remain to mourn her passing are her dear daughter Shirley Ann Hoyer of Cuba; her brother Earl Bush of St. Louis; her dear daughter-in-law Sally Hoyer of St. James; two granddaughters, Cindy Mouser and husband Carmel of Cuba, and Tamara Mason and husband Craig of St. James; three nephews, Walter Bush, Larry Bush, and Earl Bush; seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends, all who will sadly miss and fondly remember Viola Alice Hoyer. Visitation was on Tuesday, March 27, 2001 from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba, Mo. Funeral service was on Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Michael Hannah officiating. Ella Greenwalt sang two selections, In The Garden and I'll Fly Away. Clarence "Dale" McMillen Clarence "Dale" McMillen was born Monday, June 5, 1933 in Keysville, Mo. to the late John Thompson McMillen and Sarah Elizabeth Key McMillen and departed this life Friday, March 23, 2001 at the St. Frances Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo. at the age of 67 years, 9 months and 18 days. Dale grew up in the Keysville community and attended the Keysville Presbyterian Church as a child. He left Keysville, Mo. after graduating the 8th grade and moved to St. Louis, Mo. where he worked for Baldor Electric. Dale married Betty Temple in St. Louis, Mo. and they made their home together in St. Louis, Mo. until her death in 1968. He later married Faye Wilkerson and they moved to Lutesville, now known as Marble Hill, Mo. and later moved to Dexter, Mo., where he and Faye made their home together for the past 12 years. Dale enjoyed watching baseball games, hunting and fishing, gardening, and was very fond of his step-children. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, six brothers, Sidney, Ross, John, and William Thompson McMillen, and two infant boys buried in Bonne Terre, Mo.; three brothers-in-law Rainey Nichols, Thurston Clonts, and Glen Gray, two sisters-in-law Jacques McMillen and Barbara McMillen. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his loving wife Faye of the home in Dexter, Mo.; his step-children Joe Wilkerson and wife Debbie of Texas; Lloyd Wilkerson and wife Suzanne of Michigan; and Cleatta Velasquez and husband Cosme of Texas. McQuaide nee Haase of Cuba, Mo. was born on February 20, 1902 in St. Louis, Mo. to the union of Charles Haase and Anna Haase nee Gerard and passed away on March 21, 2001 at Maryville, Illinois at the age of 99 years, 1 month and 1 day. In 1921 Catherine was united in marriage to John A McQuaide; three sons, John, Jim and Jerry and one daughter, Margaret were born to this union. Catherine and John were happily married until he preceded her in death. Catherine was also preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers. Catherine was a long time resident of Crawford County, member of Holy Cross Church and the Three Mile Club. Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her three sons Jim McQuaide and wife Margaret, Jerry McQuaide and wife Betty and John McQuaide and wife Ruth; one daughter Margaret Broshous; one sister Josephine Haase; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends. Catherine was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Catherine E. McQuaide nee Haase was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Funeral Mass was held on Monday, March 26, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, Cuba, Mo. with Father Bob Duesdieker officiating. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Cuba, Mo. All arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Edna Massey Edna Massey, 84, passed away March 25, 2001, in Steelville, Mo. at the Gibbs Care Center. Edna was born in Iberia, Mo., December 26, 1916, a daughter of the late Charles Edward Shockley and Anna Maud (Gardner) Shockley. In Iberia she made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and joined the Assembly of God Church in 1929. At Eldon, Mo. on December 24, 1939, she was united in marriage to Rev. Joe R. Massey. To this union were born a son, Ronald J. Massey and a daughter, Brenda (Massey) Bartholf. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Herman Shockley and one sister Mary McDonald. Edna, a kind and gentle woman was deeply committed to the church. She taught Sunday School, was active in woman's ministries, a pastor's wife and worked to help people in any way she could. She was devoted to her family and friends. She was an avid reader and loved to learn. She would frequently encourage others based on her philosophy that relationships are the most important thing in life. She would also say, "Remember it's how you treat people that counts." Edna has heard the Lord say, "Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of the Lord." Matthew 25: 21. Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her husband Rev. Joe R. Massey of Steelville, Mo.; her son Ronald J. Massey and Mary his wife of St. Louis, Mo.; her daughter Brenda (Massey) Bartholf and husband Dr. Everett Bartholf of Chesterfield, Mo. Two grandchildren, Rhonda Hollingsworth and husband Dave Hollingsworth of Medford, Oregon and Jeanette Talbot and husband Travis Talbot of Seattle, Washington; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Hollingsworth and Mikayle Talbot. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Kathryn Massey, Darrell and Becky Massey, all of Rocky Mount, Mo., James and Louise Massey of Kansas City, Mo., Selma Addock of Lamar, Mo.; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Edna Massey lay in state 3-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at the First Assembly of God, Steelville, Mo., with Pastor Jerry Beers officiating. The eulogy was delivered by her son-in-law Dr. Everett Bartholf. Musical selections were provided by organist Rosella Roberts, pianist Sharon Hardecke and vocalists Gary Hardecke and Elsie Billingsley. Committal prayers and interment were in Steelville Cemetery, Steelville, Mo. Honoring Edna as pallbearers were Emery Clonts, Bob Earney, Gary Hardecke, Gus Head, Jim Hewkin and Howard Sanders.
