Ronald Buchan
Ronald Buchan was born Thursday, November 11, 1909, at Mason City, Iowa, a
son of the late John Henry Buchan and Ellen (Houghton) Buchan. He entered
eternal rest Thursday, April 4, 2002, at his home in Steelville, Mo., at
the age of 92 years, 4 months and 23 days.
On September 30, 1939, in St. Louis, Mo. Ron was united in marriage to
Melva E. White. One son and two daughters were born to this union. They
have enjoyed over 62 years together.
Ron served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the
21st Infantry. He entered the service at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. on
December 1, 1943 and an honorable discharge at Jefferson Barracks December
1945. He received training at Ft. Riley, Kansas in the Horse Calvary.
Upon completion of training, he was sent to the Philippines to serve in the
Infantry. During this time he participated in the Battle of the Philippines
at Luzon where he was awarded a Purple Heart and Two Bronze Stars with "V"
device for Valor.
In addition to his parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and
Charles Wood, preceded him in death.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife, Mel, of
the home; two daughters and one son, Sharon Zeiss of Steelville, Mo.,
Ronald (Ronnie) Buchan of Edwards, Colorado, Sharlene and husband, Rodney
Walls of Cuba, Mo.; one sister, Florence Meyer and husband, David, of St.
Louis, Mo.
Six grandchildren, Steve Zeiss and wife Kim, Donna Palmer and husband Ted,
Lisa Brown, Eric Curtis, Lance Curtis and wife Stacey, all of Steelville,
Mo., Shawn Curtis and wife Stephanie of Fort Polk, Louisiana.
Twelve great-grandchildren, Justin and Ashley Palmer, Bethany and Sonny
Brown, Mariah and Sterra Zeiss, Tiffany, Trevor, Kyle, Ryan, Ian and
Addison Curtis; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Ronald Buchan lay in state 4-8 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2002, at the Britton
Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 8, 2002, in the Britton
Chapel with Rev. Woodrow Martin officiating. Committal prayers and
interment were in Steelville Cemetery, Steelville, Mo. Full military honors
were provided by Missouri Military Funeral Honors Western Division at
graveside.
Serving as pallbearers were Steve Zeiss, Shawn Curtis, Eric Curtis, Lance
Curtis, Justin Palmer, and Lee Johnson.
Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville,
Mo.
Ruth E. Davis
Ruth E. Davis of Sullivan, Mo., wife of the late Raymond E. Davis, and
daughter of the late Roy E. and Rhoda A. (Housewright) McCune, passed away
at her home on Thursday, April 11, 2002 at the age of 82 years.
Mrs. Davis was born on March 28, 1920 at Oak Hill, Mo. She was raised in
the Oak Hill area and attended Three Mile School and Cuba Elementary School
until the 8th grade. On August 19, 1941 she was married to Raymond E. Davis
at Sullivan, and to this union eight children were born.
Mrs. Davis was known by her children as the perfect mother, who dearly
loved her children and many grandchildren. It was said by many that she
never spoke a bad word about anyone, but rather loved to talk about her
grandchildren. She enjoyed noontime gatherings at the Senior Citizens
Center when she was able, and also was fond of reading.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Margaret
Davis of Sullivan, Howard and Mary Davis of Cuba, Mo., and Donald and
Laverna Davis of Bland, Mo.; two daughters, Carol Davis and Marilyn
Hongisto and husband, Wayne, all of Sullivan; one brother, James McCune of
Owensville, Mo.
Thirty grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Sharon
Fann and husband, Ron, and Brenda Davis and friend, Norman; two
brothers-in-law, John Pinnell and Ira Licklider, other relatives and
friends.
Along with her husband and parents, Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by
three sons, William Earl, Bill, and Lawrence Davis, one grandson, Danny
Davis, one brother, Dr. Emmett McCune and four sisters, Viola Enloe,
Mildred Pinnell, Etta Licklider, and Edith Homeyer.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2002 from
the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Harry Pryor
officiating. Interment was in Crow Cemetery.
Alfred John Heyer, Jr.
Alfred John Heyer, Jr. was born on July 18, 1925 to Alfred John Heyer, Sr.
and Elisabeth Bishop Heyer in Clayton, Mo. He passed away after a lengthy
illness on Saturday, April 6, 2002, at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 19
days.
Alfred attended two years of high school before going to the Army where he
served three and a half years during W.W. II. He served in the 191st Signal
Repair Company as a Tech 4 radio repairman. Alfred was honorably discharged
June 4, 1946. He went back to high school where he graduated in 1948 from
Maplewood Richmond Heights High School then attended St. Louis University
for one year.
On April 9, 1950 Alfred was united in marriage in Cuba, Mo. to Violette
Jeanne Bush and to this union six children were born.
He professed faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior and was a longtime member
of First Baptist Church, Cuba, until moving to St. Louis due to health
reasons. He taught fifth and sixth grade Sunday School for many years and
worked with the puppet ministry.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk after 30 years. He was
well known throughout the county for his photography business from the
1950's - 1980's. He had many varied interests and hobbies including auto
mechanics, stamp collecting, woodworking, gardening, growing herbs,
studying science and electronics, and especially reading.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; a brother James Heyer and wife
Dorothy; a sister Lois Ameiss and husband Henry; and a sister-in-law Ruth
Hardesty and husband Edwin.
Those who remain to mourn his passing are his dear wife Violette Jeanne of
Ballwin, Mo.; his children Elisabeth "Betty" Jean Babb and husband Larry of
Wildwood, Mo., Alfred John Heyer III and wife Jeri of Wheaton, Illinois,
Laura May Heyer of Kansas City, Mo., Walter Thomas Heyer and wife Laura of
Cuba, Mo., Ruth Louise Martin and husband Ron of Highland Park, Illinois,
and Carol Viola Erickson and husband Eric of Bolivar, Mo.; one
sister-in-law Sarah Bush of Wheaton, Illinois; 12 grandchildren, Thomas and
Kathryn Heyer, Nathaniel Martin, Alfred "Johnny" Heyer IV, Kerilyn Heyer,
David, Stephen, and Jennifer Babb, Micaiah and Miriam Erickson, Eric and
Scott Tenute; eight great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Alton, Samantha, Haley,
Jacob, Manuel, Austin and Nicholas, nieces, nephews, other relatives and
many friends all who will sadly miss Alfred John Heyer, Jr.
Visitation was 5-9 p.m. Monday, April 8, 2002, at Hutson Funeral Home,
Cuba, Mo.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at First Baptist
Church, Cuba, Mo. with Rev. Eric Smith officiating. The music "Lord I'm
Coming Home" and "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" was sung by Bro. Jerry Beers,
and "Because" by Valerie Hutson.
Burial was in the Fairclough Cemetery, Cuba, Mo. with pallbearers Thomas
Heyer, David Babb, Stephen Babb, Micaiah Erickson, Johnny Heyer, and Frank
Cunningham.
Memorials may be given to the W.W. II memorial fund, Washington, D.C. and
the Gideon Memorial Bible Society.
All arrangements were under the direction of Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Mo.
Catherine "Cathy" Lee Huxtable
Catherine "Cathy" Lee Huxtable nee McCanna of Cuba, Mo. was born on May 15,
1950 in California to the union of William McCanna and Bonnie McCanna nee
Altom and passed away on April 10, 2002 at Cuba, Mo. at the age of 51
years, 10 months and 25 days.
Cathy was preceded in death by her father William McCanna.
She was a devoted member of the Cuba Freewill Baptist Church of Cuba, Mo.
Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her loving
children Shawn Duplin, Raymond, Christopher, Timothy, Brian and Katrina
Carter; mother Bonnie Hocking; brothers Gary McCanna and Ronald Gouveia;
sisters Boots Evans and Pat Gouveia; two grandchildren; nieces; nephews;
other relatives and many friends.
Cathy was a devoted mother, loving daughter, sister, grandmother, good
friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed.
Catherine "Cathy" Lee Huxtable nee McCanna was in state at the Britton
Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Funeral services were held on Friday, April 12,
2002 at 10 a.m. at the Cuba Freewill Baptist Church, Cuba, Mo. with Rev.
Dick Dablemont officiating. Interment was in the Crow Cemetery, Bourbon,
Mo.
All arrangements were under direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba,
Mo. Memorials to the building fund of the Cuba Freewill Baptist Church,
Cuba, Mo.
Robert "Bob" John Rose
Robert "Bob" John Rose of Cuba, Mo. was born on July 24, 1951 at
Washington, Mo. to the union of Edward Rose and Mildred Tegeler Rose. He
passed away suddenly on April 2, 2002 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St.
Louis, Mo. at the age of 50 years, 8 months and 8 days.
He was a graduate of Ritenour High School, Overland, Mo. in 1969. He was a
carpenter and a member of Carpenter's Union, Local No. 73.
On July 7, 1973 Robert was united in marriage to Cathy Lynne Robinson at
Florissant, Mo. They had been happily married for 29 years.
Robert was preceded in death by an infant daughter Rose on July 21, 1979
and his mother Mildred Rose.
Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his devoted wife
Cathy Rose and his children Elizabeth, Victoria, and Andrew, a loving
father and mother-in-law Bill and Patricia Robinson of Cuba, Mo., two
brothers-in-law Steve Robinson and wife Barbara, and Greg Robinson and wife
Christine, father Edward Rose and wife Sue of Canaan, Mo., sister Debra
Nash and husband Larry of Rolla, Mo., nieces, nephews, other relatives, and
many friends.
Robert was a dedicated husband, loving father, son-in-law, son, brother,
brother-in-law, uncle, and good friend to all who knew him.
Bob will be remembered by all of those who loved him. He treated everyone
with kindness. He was always prepared to listen to children and young
people. He never tried to be the center of anything but he was a pillar of
spiritual strength to those he loved and to many others.
All those who knew him will sorely miss Bob's gentle ways and trusted words
of guidance.
Bob was in state at Britton Funeral Home, Cuba, Friday, April 5, 2002.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2002, in Britton
Chapel. Interment was in Bourbon Cemetery, Bourbon, Mo.
We know he rests in the arms of our Lord Jesus.
Paul Duane Sanders
Paul Duane Sanders was born Sunday, September 24, 1922, at Doniphon, Mo., a
son of the late Willis Raymond Sanders and Selma Louise (Eckstein) Sanders.
He entered eternal rest Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at his home in Doniphon,
Mo., at the age of 79 years, 6 months and 16 days.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his wife Shirley (Parsons)
Sanders of Doniphon, Mo,three brothers, Glen Sanders and wife Pat, and
Vernon Sanders, all of Jacksonville, Arkansas, Howard Sanders and wife
Hester of Steelville, Mo.; one sister Hazel and husband Raymond Potter of
Springfield, Mo.
Three sons and four daughters, Gail and husband Roger Kiesling of Fort
Mill, South Carolina, Paul Sanders and wife Marsha, David Sanders and wife
Kathy all of St. Clair, Mo., Mary and husband Steve Lansing of Salem, Mo.,
Martha and husband Marty Hanks of Steelville, Mo., Ruth and husband Steve
Cannon, Tim Sanders and wife Barbara all of Salem, Mo.
Seven step-daughters, Rebecca and husband Paul Hart of Vichy, Mo., Kathy
and husband Billy Basham, Theresa and husband Vincent Woolley of Belle,
Mo., Nancy and husband Dana Dawson, Debbie and husband Mike Mactee of
Pacific, Mo., Pam and husband John Branson of Owensville, Mo. and Sandra
Goolsby of Bland, Mo.
Also remaining to mourn his passing are 21 grandchildren, 17
step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and 16
step-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many
friends.
Paul Duane Sanders lay in state 3-8 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2002, at the
Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held 1
p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2002, in the Britton Chapel with Rev. David
Gidcumb officiating. Musical selections were provided by Mark Mathes.
Committal prayers and interment were in Roberts Cemetery, rural Steelville,
Mo. Serving as pallbearers were George Cotner, Mark Davis, Teddy Evans,
Leonard Layton, Bill Manning, Marshall Neely and Ron Payne.
Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville,
Mo.
Troy Richard "Dick" Mager
Troy Richard Mager of Steelville, Mo., was born Thursday, April 5, 1934, in
St. Louis, Mo., a son of the late Troy Clifford Mager and Dorothy (Lynch)
Mager.
He entered eternal life Thursday, April 11, 2002, at the Missouri Baptist
Medical Center, St. Louis, Mo., at the age of 68 years and 6 days.
He graduated from Steelville High School in 1952 and the University of
Missouri, Columbia, Mo. in 1956. He then served two years as a 1st Lt. in
the U.S. Army. After military service he attended law school at the
University of Missouri. His work experience included Western Auto Store in
Steelville, Gulf Oil Company as a pipeliner, Barnetts Men's Clothing,
Columbia, Teaching Assistant at the University of Missouri-Columbia, law
clerk and lawyer at Tull Law Office, Columbia, Mager Law Office, Columbia.
Asst. Prosecuting Attorney, Boone County, Counsel, Board of Curators,
University of Missouri, General Counsel, Southern Illinois University,
Carbondale, Illinois, Vice President of Development and Services, Southern
Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, Professor, Southern Illinois
School of Law, Carbondale, Partner, Feirich Mager Green Ryan, Carbondale,
Of-counsel, Feirich Mager Green Ryan 2000 to present retired Sr. Partner.
He was president and sole director, Joppa & Eastern Railroad Company,
President and sole Director, Met-South, Inc., President, Midwest Electric
Power, Inc., Managing Member, Massac Enterprises, Director, Community
National Bank, Southern Illinois. He served on many boards and received
many honors and awards throughout his life.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife Shirley
(Lea) Mager of the home; three daughters, Lee Anne Morris of Castro Valley,
California, Mary and husband Michael Silverman of Dallas, Texas, Molly and
husband John Fruin of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; two step-sons, Charles A.
(C.A.) Counts and wife Denise of Ellsinore, Mo., Larry Shearrer and wife
Pat of Steelville, Mo.; step-daughter, Sheri and husband Keith Tenney of
Foristell, Mo.; three grandchildren, Jack and Nicky Silverman of Dallas,
Texas and Jordan Morris of Castro Valley, California.
Also among those who mourn his passing are brothers-in-law and
sisters-in-law, V. A. (Bill) and Dormalie Lea, C. H. (Hack) and Vernice
Lea, J. R. (Bud) and Dottie Lea and Matred Kehner, all of Steelville, Mo.;
nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
He was a ready mentor, a masterful attorney, and avid reader, and a loving
husband, father, and grandfather. He excelled at and had a passion for the
game of golf, and was a pleasure to play with. His personality and charisma
drew all that knew him closer to him.
Troy Richard Mager lay in state 5-9 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2002, at the
Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2002, in the Britton
Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dale Starr officiating. John Rendleman gave words
of remembrance. Musical selections were provided by organist Deloris Bell.
Committal prayers and interment were in Steelville Cemetery, Steelville,
Mo. Serving as pallbearers were John Fruin, Rick Green, John Rendleman, C.
A. Shearrer, Larry Shearrer and Mike Silverman.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Brothers Funeral Home,
Steelville, Mo.
Melba Marie Mullen
Melba Marie Mullen was born May 3, 1927 in Steelville, Mo. into the family
of Lawrence D. Mullen, Sr. and Imogene Wallis Mullen, and departed this
life on April 6, 2002 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. at the
age of 74 years, 11 months and 3 days.
Melba grew up on a farm on the Huzzah Creek and attended Gibbs School. She
attended Steelville High School and graduated in 1945. Later Melba attended
Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. Melba served her country in
the United States Air Force achieving the rank of airman second class,
serving as a Personnel Specialist. She was honorably discharged on October
27, 1961.
Melba moved back to the Steelville area from Edinburg, Texas. She was a
member of First Baptist Church of Steelville, Mo. where she was faithful in
attendance. She enjoyed reading, cooking, fishing, leatherwork and travel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one nephew, Donald
Haberstock.
Those who remain to mourn her passing are her special friend of 48 years,
Jeanette "Gabby" Gabbert; her brother Lawrence Mullen, Jr. and wife Maxine
of Mesa, Arizona; three sisters, Mary Haberstock and husband Gene of
Crestwood, Mo., Margaret Hinch and husband Ed of Ellisville, Mo., and
Georgia Wymer and husband Dean of Steelville, Mo.; nieces, nephews,
cousins, and many friends, all who will sadly miss and fondly remember
Melba Mullen.
A Memorial service was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2002 at First
Baptist Church in Steelville, Mo. with Rev. Cardis Bryan and Rev. Dale
Starr officiating.
All arrangements were under the direction of the Hutson Funeral Home in
Steelville, Mo.
Robert Edward Reiner
Robert Edward Reiner of Leasburg, Mo., was born on June 20, 1929 at
Leasburg, Mo., to the union of James Jacob Reiner and Elsie Mae (Miller)
Reiner and passed away on April 12, 2002 at Sullivan, Mo. at the age of 72
years, 9 months and 20 days.
Robert was united in marriage to Georgia Watson in St. Louis, Mo. on
December 17, 1949. They were happily married until Georgia preceded him in
death on August 26, 1981.
On June 15, 1991 Robert was united in marriage to Orell (Inez) Pippin in
Las Vegas, Nevada.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother James Reiner and
one great-grandson Bryan Bouse.
Robert was a life long resident of Leasburg, Mo. Robert worked at Ramsey
Corporation of Sullivan, Mo. but retired from Seal Power Company on
Manchester.
He really enjoyed farming and raising cattle.
Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his wife Orell
(Inez) Reiner; one son Kurt Reiner; four daughters, Linda Palmer and
husband Fred, Lydia Sampson and husband Donald, Janet Bouse and husband
Robert and Suzan Brennan and husband Robert; three step-sons George Nunn,
Jermine and Vernie Barbee; one brother Walter Reiner; three sisters Loretta
White and husband Joseph, Christena Copling and husband Robert, Barbara
Neidbalski and husband Eugene; 14 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Robert was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather,
brother, uncle, good friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed.
Robert Edward Reiner was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo.
where funeral services were held on Monday, April 15, 2002, at 11 a.m. with
Bob Copling officiating. Interment was in the Lea Cemetery, Leasburg, Mo.
All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of
Cuba, Mo.
