Local Obituaries for the Week of April 28, 2005
Roger Karl Beckham
Roger Karl Beckham was born Tuesday, December 1, 1942,
in St. Louis, Missouri, a son of the late George Clifton Beckham and
lslah Modene (Gentry) Beckham.
He entered eternal life Sunday, April 17,2005, at his
home in Indian Hills, Cuba, Missouri, at the age of 62 years, 4
months and 16 days.
Roger had a fairly normal childhood, boy scouts, 4-H,
and the normal things that kids do. It was normal at least until he
was about twelve or thirteen, somewhere about this age he discovered
electricity and electronic gizmos. He became a permanent fixture at
Garrett's Radio and TV shop on Main Street. Coleman Garrett, the
kindly owner took a liking to Roger and let him help work on radios
and TVs at Mr. Garrett's shop as well as Mr. Howald's appliance
store. Some time while still in high school, the entrepreneur bug
bit, and Roger and Skip Pounds formed a joint venture known as B & P
electronics. They rented a building and set up their own radio and
TV repair business. Their business plan failed to take into account
the fact that they were still in school and it's pretty hard to run
a business and go to school at the same time. By most accounts the
business was a failure, but we suspect that two sets of parents were
relieved that their boys would get back to their school work and
stop messing around with radios and televisions.
He graduated from Steelville High School with the class
of 1960 and joined the Air Force, August 15, 1960. Roger received
specialized training in electronics and microwave communications. He
received an honorable discharge, August 14, 1964, at Beale Air Force
Base, Marysville, California.
He attended college in Sacramento and Santa Cruz,
California and spent most of his working life in California working
in a variety of jobs within the electronics field. He later worked
on communications projects in Thailand and Australia. Prior to
retirement he owned and operated a wholesale electronic business in
Spokane, Washington.
The last four years of his life were spent in his home
at Indian Hills where he divided his time between visiting with
friends, dabbling in the stock market and pursuing a long time hobby
of crafting, and collecting traditional archery equipment. By all
accounts those leisure years spent at Indian Hills were enjoyable
and fulfilling.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his
brother, Terry Beckham and Linda Beckham; a nephew, Sam Beckham; a
niece, Sara Beckham; cousins, other relatives and friends.
