Steelville Star-Crawford Mirror, Steelville, Crawford Co. MO Local Obituaries for the Week of May 3, 2001 Russell M. Beatt Russell Martin Beatt was born on August 16, 1921 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois to Roy Madison Beatt and Sarah Esther Benson Beatt. He passed away at Sullivan Nursing Center on April 24, 2001 at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 8 days. Russ entered military service on January 22, 1943. He served in the Army Air Corps during WW II. He served overseas in Europe in the 342nd Bomber Squadron. He received 7 Bronze Stars for the Campaigns he was involved in, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Unit Citation. Russ was honorably discharged on October 29, 1945. Russ was a machinist by trade. Upon returning to St. Louis, he went to work for McQuay-Norris. He retired from there as a supervisor in 1979. On November 18, 1947 he was united in marriage of Lavonia D. Tanner in Walnut Park, Mo., and to this union two sons were born. Lavonia died after a bout with cancer in January 1978. On May 24, 1980 Russ was united in marriage to Ruby A. Hughes in St. James, Mo. They made their retirement home in Cuba, and later St. James. Ruby passed away on April 26, 1998 after a lengthy illness of cancer. Russ enjoyed cooking, a task he learned in the Army. For a period of time he and Ruby had the Route 66 Cafe in Cuba. He enjoyed farming as long as his health permitted. While living in St. James, he and Ruby had a grape stand along I-44, where they enjoyed meeting the people who stopped by. Russell Beatt was preceded in death by his parents; one son Gary Steven Beatt; two wives, Lavonia D. Tanner Beatt, and Ruby A. Hughes Beatt; and two brothers, Oliver John Beatt, and Roy Orville Beatt. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his dear son Russell David Beatt and wife Karen of Bourbon, Mo.; three step-children, Phyllis Benkof and husband Richard of St. Louis, Mo., Gary Hughes, Sr. and wife Terry of Cuba, Mo., and Kirk Hughes of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister Ethel Bierhing of St. Louis, Mo.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Herman Hughes of Cuba, Mo., Juanita Hughes of Cuba, Mo., Edith and Cordell Callahan of St. James, Mo., and Barbara Sue and Robert Wildeison of Minnesota; step father-in-law, Eli Thornburg of St. Louis, Mo. Five grandchildren, Jason Beatt and wife Jennifer of St. Louis, Mo., Christine Cucchi of Chicago, Illinois, Stephanie Hughes of St. Louis, Mo., Jennifer Fels and husband Bret of Fenton, Mo., and Gary Hughes, Jr. of the United States Navy; three great-grandchildren, Caitlin Hughes, Cori Fels, and Brett Fels; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends, all who will sadly miss and fondly remember Russell Martin Beatt. Visitation was held on Thursday, April 26, 2001 from 4-9 p.m. at Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba, mo. Funeral services was held on Friday, April 27, 2001 at 1 p.m. at Hutson Funeral Chapel in Cuba, Mo. with Rev. David Zirpel officiating. Burial was in the Laurel Hill Memorial Garden in St. Louis, Mo. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society. All arrangements were under the direction of Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba, Mo. Harold Caldwell Harold Caldwell was born on January 5, 1933 in Arlington Heights, Ohio to Henderson Caldwell and Bonnie Fields Caldwell. He passed away at his home in Cuba, Mo. on April 28, 2001 at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 23 days. Harold entered military service on January 15, 1952. He served in the National Guard and then was called into active duty to serve during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on August 13, 1953. Harold was an over-the-road trucker for 37 years. He was preceded in death by his father; one son, Harold; two sisters, Barbara Ann Cress and Faye Jones; and one brother, Dale Caldwell. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his mother, Bonnie Caldwell of Morrow, Ohio; his son George Harold Caldwell of Springboro, Ohio; two daughters Bonnie Bayman and husband Dwayne of Alabama, and Rebecca Hilton and husband Elmer of Walton, Kentucky; three sisters Sue Wallace of St. James, Florida, Rita Smith of Lakeland, Florida, and Deborah Hudgel and husband Tim of Morrow, Ohio; and special friends Ron and Susan Robinson of Cuba, Mo. Eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends, all who will sadly miss and fondly remember Harold Caldwell. Graveside services and burial were held at the National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, Mo. on Monday, April 30, 2001 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Delmar Hutson officiating. Anna Novelle Corcoran Dear infant twin daughter of Kevin and Carol (Courtney) Corcoran of Sullivan, Mo.; dear granddaughter of Connie Courtney and Dan Kreamalmyer of Steelville, Mo., Jerry and Joanne Corcoran of St. Louis, Mo.; (the late James Courtney); dear sister of James Morgareldege of Germany; Christina Wheeler and husband Tommy of Fort Hood, Texas and her twin sister Angela Stella Corcoran; aunts, uncles, nephew Jalmez Wheeler, cousins and friends. Anna Novelle was born Wednesday, April 18, 2001 and passed away Thursday, April 19, 2001 at the age of one day. Visitation and Funeral Service were held at Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville, Mo. at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2001 with Rev. Stacy Prewitt officiating. Betty Ruth Ellebracht Betty Ruth Ellebracht was born Wednesday, September 14, 1927 in St. Louis, Mo. to the late Harry Fritz Uhter and Blanche Lucy Pohlman Uhter and departed this life on Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 7 days. Betty married Francis Carl Ellebracht on May 28, 1955 at the St. Leo's Catholic Church in St. Louis, Mo. Betty worked as a bookkeeper for the St. Louis Post Dispatch News Paper for 30 years. Betty was a member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Steelville. She and Francis moved to Steelville in 1992. Betty enjoyed reading the paper, watching TV, doing yard work and tending her flowers. She was very fond of her nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Bob Smith; Art Schmidt; Marie and Lawrence Hemple; Joe Ellebracht. Father Joe Ellebracht; Tony Ellebracht, Gene Ellebracht, and Kenneth and Alice Ellebracht. Honoring Betty as Pallbearers were her nephews Dan Kremalmyer, Justin Smith, Anthony Billingsley, John Ellebracht, Robert Ellebracht, and Thomas Ellebracht. All arrangements under the direction of the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville, Mo. Hallie Mae Williams Hallie Mae Williams nee Spurgeon of Cuba, Mo., was born on March 10, 1915 in Jakes Prairie, Mo. the union of James and Lula Spurgeon nee Wright and passed away on April 24, 2001 in Sullivan, Mo. at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 14 days. In 1937 Hallie was united in marriage to Homer Williams in Rolla, Mo. One son, Everett, and one daughter, Lou Belle, was born to this union. Homer and Hallie were happily married for 63 years. Hallie was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Lowell, Ivan, Omar, Estil and Chattie Spurgeon. Hallie Mae had given her life to Christ when she was a young woman. She devoted her life to raising her family. Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life is her husband Homer Williams; one son Everett and wife Willa Mae Williams; one daughter Lou Belle and husband Al Spurgeon; two brothers Ralph and Ezro Spurgeon; three grandchildren, Randy Williams, Brenda Rose, and Linda Welch; seven great-grand-children; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Hallie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and a good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Hallie Mae Williams nee Spurgeon was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. where funeral services were held on Friday, April 27, 2001 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Leo Robinson officiating.
