William James Barnett
William James Barnett, 96, died April 26, 2004 at Boone Hospital,
Columbia, Missouri. Mr. Barnett was born May 23, 1907 in Cuba, Missouri,
the son of Alva J. and Florence (Glaser) Barnett. In 1937 he married
Pocahontas M. Thompson and she survives.
His parents and sister, Mildred Sebastion, preceded him in death.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, William James Barnett,
Jr. (Jill), of Cuba, Missouri and two grandsons, William James Barnett,
III, of Berkeley, California and Andrew Price Barnett, of St. Louis,
Missouri.
A 1925 graduate of Cuba High School, he graduated from the University of
Missouri-Columbia with a degree in Business in 1929. He served as
president of the School of Business and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha
Fraternity. For a short time, he worked for Barnett Ford Motor Co. Then,
Dr. Middlebush, president of Missouri University, recommended him to
Harvard University and in 1932 Mr. Barnett graduated with a MBA in
Finance.
After Harvard, he joined Kresge Co. as Assistant Manager of their Forth
Worth, Texas store. He earned just $150 per month, but recalled that an
entire dinner cost just 15 cents! In 1935 he moved to Columbia, Missouri
and purchased the Columbia Credit Bureau. He served in the Army at Camp
Walters, Texas from late 1942 until mid 1943 and received an honorable
discharge due to age.
Mr. Barnett then joined Halund Manufacturing Company in Latrobe,
Pennsylvania where he served as assistant plant manager. Halund made
plastic forms which were used to make rubber gas tanks for the B-29. He
often traveled to Buffalo, New York City, Toronto, and Montreal to visit
such clients as Firestone, Huitt Rubber and Goodyear. He later became
General Manager. He tells the story that one night it was storming and his
wife, Pokie, called him to come home. He left the plant to soothe his
wife's fear of storms. When he returned to the plant everyone was sitting
outside. An alarm had sounded and they were waiting for him to tell them
what to do.
In 1945 he returned to Columbia to take over management of the Credit
Bureau. In 1961 Mr. Barnett sold the Credit Bureau and purchased Central
Billing Service which bought accounts receivables from select businesses.
In 1959 his father, A.J. Barnett, President of Peoples Bank, Cuba,
Missouri died. Mr. Barnett was then elected President, a position he held
until he was elected Chairman in 1976 and later Chairman Emeritus in 1994.
He was a member of the Columbia and Cuba Chamber of Commerce and a long
time member of the Columbia Rotary Club. He was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church in Columbia.
Visitation was held at Britton Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri Tuesday, April
27, 2004 from 5-8 p.m. Graveside services were held April 28, 2004 at
Kinder Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri.

Rex Edward "Pete" Bryan
Rex Edward "Pete" Bryan of Orlando, Florida was born on October 5, 1948 in
Waynesville Hospital, Waynesville, Missouri to the union of Paul Bryan and
Lorraine (Perschbacker) Bryan and passed away on April 29, 2004 at
Orlando, Florida.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Lorraine, one brother,
Ray Bryan, and one nephew, Brian Stites.
He went to Cuba R-2 school, graduated and then went into the Air Force and
did a tour of duty in Vietnam.
Rex fought cancer for over a year.
Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his wife, Debbie
of Orlando; one son Damon of Orlando; two daughters, Kim and husband TJ of
Hawaii and Kelly and husband Richard of North Carolina; nine
grandchildren; two sisters, Sharon Thomas and husband Walter of Orlando,
Florida and Sherry Stites of Cuba, Mo.; many nieces; nephews; aunts and
uncles; other relatives and friends.
Rex was a loving father, brother, uncle, good friend to all who knew him
and will be sadly missed.
Memorial services for Rex Edward Bryan will be at a later date in Orlando,
Florida.
Edward Jamison
Edward Jamison, son of Harry and Harriet Jamison, was born in Steelville,
Missouri February 21, 1920. He came to St. Louis at an early age and lived
with his aunt Dallas Greenly.
He did construction work until he went into the Army in 1941 to 1945 and
received an honorable discharge.
He married Charlotte Green on June 7, 1950. Edward joined West Side
Missionary Baptist Church. He drove eighteen-wheeler trucks with various
companies until he retired. His hobbies were fishing and hunting.
He had two brothers, Darley and George, both of whom preceded him in
death.
He leaves to mourn his devoted wife, Charlotte; his mother-in-law, Lucy
Johnson; his sister, Eva Britt; two cousins, Geneva Burton and Audrey
Johnson; nephews, Roy Dell and Harris Brown, Jr.; and a host of other
relatives and friends.
The eulogy was given by Rev. Floyd Morris. Serving as pallbearers were
Donald Looney, Sr., Donald Looney, Jr., and Charles White.
Interment was in National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Services were
under the direction of Wade Twin Chapel Funeral Home, St. Louis, Missouri.
Some Steelville residents will remember the Jamison family who purchased a
farm on Cherry Valley creek in 1896. Their youngest son Harry lived there
until his death in 1974.
Taylor P. Kersey
Taylor P. Kersey of Sylvester, Georgia (formerly of Cuba, Mo.) was born on
December 24, 1910 at Obion County, Tennessee to the union of Charlie Lee
Kersey and Linnie Taylor Kersey and passed away on May 1, 2004 at
Sylvester, Georgia at the age of 93 years.
On September 12, 1934 Taylor was united in marriage to Mabel Heseman at
Edwardsville, Illinois. One son, Richard, was born to this union. They
were happily married until Mabel preceded him in death on June 13, 1980.
Taylor was a member of the Cuba Masonic Lodge No. 312 and a member of the
Northside Baptist Church of Sylvester, Georgia.
Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his loving son,
Richard Kersey; a number of nephews and nieces including Charles and Janet
Howard of Sylvester, Georgia, with whom he made his home with; other
relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the
Lickcreek Cemetery, Cuba, Mo. with Rev. Ben McDaniel officiating.
Interment was in the Lickcreek Cemetery, Cuba, Mo. All local arrangements
were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo.
Herbert Frank Martin
Herbert Frank Martin passed away suddenly in Springfield, Missouri on
April 20, 2004 at the age of 46 years. He was born on January 23, 1958 in
Steelville, Missouri to the union of Ray Martin and the late Bessie "Pud"
Martin of Steelville, Missouri.
Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his father and
step-mother Ray and Yvonne Martin of Steelville, Mo.; two sisters, Kay
Thomas and husband Bill of Cuba, Mo., and Judy Crisman of Springfield,
Mo.; two brothers Jack Martin of Cuba, Mo. and Ernie Martin and wife
Zanada of Steelville, Mo.; special friend Linda Shields of Springfield,
Mo.; our dear uncle, relative and friend.
He was a loving son, brother, uncle, great-uncle, and good friend to all
who knew him.
All arrangements wee made at the Greenlawn Funeral Home in Springfield,
Mo. Graveside services were held on Sunday, April 25, 2004 in the
Steelville Cemetery with his family. Interment was in the Steelville
Cemetery, Steelville, Mo.
Albert Louis Miller
Albert Louis Miller was born Sunday May 31, 1908 at Steelville, Missouri,
a son of the late Louis Albert Miller and Lula May (Eggers) Miller. He
departed this life Saturday April 24, 2004, at the Hospice Easy Living,
Wichita, Kansas.
On September 11, 1935, at Steelville, Missouri, he was united in marriage
to Hattie May Brand. They enjoyed forty years together before her death,
March 13, 1975. He was also preceded in death by one brother, William
Miller and wife Ivy and two sisters, Helen and husband Addison Wright and
Hilda Miller.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his two devoted daughters,
Alberta Jiskra and husband Alvin of Lyndon, Kansas and Mary Lou Hollabaugh
and husband Jim of Wichita, Kansas; three grandchildren, Debra Cotter and
husband Joe of Wichita, Kansas, Rebecca Becker and husband Brian of Keota,
Iowa and Rhonda Jiskra of Lyndon, Kansas; six great grandchildren, Cortnee
Roster, Desirea RosIer, Spenser Becker, Sage Becker, Shae Lynn Becker and
Dakota Jiskra; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Albert Miller lay in state 6-8 p.m. Wednesday April 28, 2004, at the
Britton Eros. Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were
held 10 a.m. Thursday April 29, 2004, in the Britton Chapel with Dr.
Cardis Bryan officiating.
Committal prayers and interment were in Pleasant Point Cemetery, rural
Steelville, Missouri.
Honoring Albert as pallbearers were Brian Becker, Donald Brand, Alan
Brand, Joe Cotter, Dale Woodruff and Paul Woodruff.
Arrangements were entrusted to Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Gary N. Paquet
Gary N. Paquet, 54, of St. Louis, Missouri passed away on Saturday, May 1,
2004.
Beloved husband of Frances Paquet (nee Radford); beloved father of Sheila
Paquet and Gary (Nina) Paquet II; dear son of Norman and Virginia Paquet;
dear brother of Ted Paquet, Norman Paquet II, Elizabeth Simpson (Bill),
Patti Lawson (Donald), Shari Mareschal (Neal), David Paquet, and Kathi
Paquet; dear nephew of Sondra DeLay, Jerry and James Labruyere; our dear
uncle, great-uncle, cousin, brother-in-law, and friend.
Mr. Paquet was a member of U.A.W. - Chrysler Local #136.
Milford Ralph Schoen
Milford Ralph Schoen was born Sunday December 6, 1925, at Owensville,
Missouri, a son of the late Fred Henry Schoen and Mamie Marie Schoen (nee
Luhring).
He departed this life Sunday April 25, 2004, at the Gibbs Care Center,
Steelville, Missouri, at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 19 days.
At Cuba, Missouri, May 22, 1948, Milford was united in marriage to May
Viola Grayson. He was a bus driver for Crawford County R-III for 24 years.
Before driving the bus, he and May operated the Wayside Inn for twelve
years. They enjoyed over 52 years together, before her death January 30,
2001.
Milford was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Violet Ann Luhring.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his step-son, Noel Glen
Grayson and wife Shirley of Steelville, Missouri; one sister, Imogene
Hinch and husband Clinton of Steelville, Missouri; one brother, Everett
Schoen and wife Rosalee of Salem, Missouri; five grandchildren, Lena and
husband Rod Halbert, Roger Grayson and wife Kim, Alan Grayson and wife
Wanda, and Sally Luhring, all of Steelville, Missouri, Missy and husband
Drew Stubblefield of Cuba, Missouri; 13 great grandchildren, Nicole and
husband Tony Smith, Buffy and husband Chris Case, Sarah and husband
J.P.Dunn, Schoen and wife Kendall Grayson, Adam Grayson, Samantha Grayson,
Jessica Stubblefield, Andy Stubblefield, Erin Stubblefield, Matt
Stubblefield, Kyle Grayson, Kara Grayson and Dillon Grayson; four great
great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Johnny, Jackson and Sophie; nieces and
nephews, Janet Hopkins of Cedar Hill, Missouri; Joan Gillam and husband
Sonny of Sullivan, Missouri; Barry Hinch and wife Judy of St. Charles,
Missouri; Bonnie Brice and husband John of Steelville, Missouri; and John
Schoen of Cherryville, Missouri; cousins, other relatives and many
friends.
Milford Ralph Schoen lay in state 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 26, 2004, at the
Britton Bros. Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2004, in the Britton
Chapel with grandson Adam Grayson officiating, Dr. Cardis Bryan and Schoen
Grayson assisting. Musical selections were provided by Danny Gruver
vocalist, with pianist Erin Stubblefield and Ava Britton.
Committal prayers and interment were in Steelville Cemetery, Steelville,
Missouri. Serving as pallbearers were Schoen, Kyle and Dillon Grayson,
Andy and Matt Stubblefield and Tony Smith.
Arrangements were entrusted to the direction of Britton Funeral Home,
Steelville, Missouri.
