MO Local Obituaries for the Week of May 7, 2008 Hallie Lee Clonts Hallie Lee Clonts of Steelville, Missouri was born March 22, 1916 in Cherryville, Missouri to Jesse and Iona Lee (Allsman) Clonts. She passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008 at Gibbs Care Center. She worked in the USDA Extension Service field educating for the Adult and Youth Leadership Programs. She served as County Home Agent from 1956 to 1972 in Watowan County in St. James, Minnesota. She worked with homemakers conducting workshops while teaching nutrition and sewing. Education was very important in Hallie’s life. As it was her desire to learn and teach others, she acquired her Doctorate degree at the University of Arizona. She retired from the Kansas City State University as Specialist in the food and nutrition Education Programs. She considered the “Best years of her life” when she retired and came back home to Steelville to be with her family and friends. She felt honored to serve on the Steelville Cemetery Board and Gibbs Care Center Board. For over 20 years, she altered clothing in her home and always enjoyed the challenge of a “perfect fit”. She enjoyed music, reading and walking and was always ready for a good card game with her family. Hallie accepted the Lord as her Savior and was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Steelville, Missouri. Her laughter and smile would brighten anyone’s day. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jesse H. Clonts and wife Irene; two sisters, Helen Clonts and Hazel Lowe and husband Frank; two brothers-in-law, Jim and Wayne Gladden. She is survived by three sisters, Ina Gladden of Cherryville, Missouri, Eva Gladden and Faith Dillon and husband Richard, all of Washington, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Britton- Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri with Rev. Jerry Beers officiating. Special music of “It Is Well With My Soul” and “What A Day That Will Be” were sung by Danny Gladden, Sr. and Danny Gladden, Jr. accompanied by Donna Silvey on piano. Casketbearers were John Gladden, Joe Gladden, Danny Gladden, Jr., Steve Shofner, Craig Shofner and Hank Epstein. Honorary Casketbearers were Danny Gladden, Sr., Richard Dillon, Bill Coffman and Floyd Reed. Committal prayer and burial were in the Steelville Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville, Missouri. Louis W. Sala Louis W. Sala was born February 10, 1921 in St. Louis, Missouri to Angelo and Emma Sala. He passed away April 18, 2008 at the age of 87 years. The Sala family owned and operated Sala’s Café on the St. Louis Hill since 1911. They also frequently were found at their family farm in Cuba, which they shared since 1938. Even though Louis was an excellent chef, his heart was always at their farm. He also loved to fish, hunt and farm. He will always be pictured driving his World War II Willy Jeep while visiting his neighbor surrounding their farm. He was preceded in death by siblings, Teresa, Charles, Angelo, Mary, Fermo and Josephine. He is survived by brother-in-law, Eugene Hanneke and Lillian Sala; nephews and nieces, Eugene (Kathie), Firmin (Anne) and Emma (Robert) Welsch; great nieces and nephews, David and Stephen Hanneke, Monica and Anthony Welsch, Mallory Hanneke; great great niece and nephew, Lucas Welsch and Rebecca Hanneke. Funeral services were at Calcaterra Funeral Home on the Hill Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Church services were at St. Ambrose also on the Hill. Interment followed at Resurrections Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri with full military honors. Salina Fern Spurgeon Salina Fern Spurgeon of Owensville, Missouri, was born in Caseyville, Illinois on May 29, 1918, the daughter of the late Francis and Marie (Higenbotham) Titter. She passed away Monday, April 28, 2008 at Life Care Center in Sullivan, Missouri, at the age of 89 years. On March 28, 1926 in Cuba, Missouri, she was united in marriage to John Oral Spurgeon. She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Jackie Darlene Spurgeon Johnston; a daughter in infancy; one brother and two sisters. She is survived by her son, Elbie James Spurgeon of New Haven, Missouri; by five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and by her best friend, Sue Nicks. Funeral services were Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville, Missouri, with Reverend Ed Teal officiating. Burial in the Licklider Cemetery in Cuba, Missouri. Jill Marie Turnbough Jill Marie Turnbough, nee Huskey, of Cuba, Missouri was born in Chula Vista, California on Thursday, August 22, 1968 to Danny Joe Huskey and Brenda Joyce Elliott Huskey. She passed away at Missouri Baptist Hospital, Sullivan, Missouri on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the age of 39 years, 8 months and 11 days. Jill graduated from Salem High School, Salem, Missouri. She married Michael Scott Turnbough on September 10, 1988 in Anutt, Missouri and to this union three children were born. She was a licensed practical nurse and worked in the health care industry. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Cuba, Missouri. She loved her family and supported her children in their sports programs. Her hobby was cross-stitching. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Alva and Susie Elliott. She is survived by her husband; children, Taylor, Gabriel and Noah Turnbough, all of the home; parents, Frank Shivers and Brenda Elliott of Anutt, Missouri; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Donald and Mary Turnbough of Viburnum, Missouri; sisters, Lisa (Ed) Welch of Salem, Missouri and Kelly (Marshall) Strouse of Chesterfield, Missouri; half brothers, Todd and Brad Huskey; other relatives and friends. White Loretta Pauline White nee Reiner of Leasburg, Missouri was born on January 13, 1926 in Leasburg, Missouri to the late James Jacob and Elsie Mae Reiner nee Miller of Leasburg and she passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 21 days. On August 28, 1948 she was united in marriage to Joseph M. White, Jr. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Louis, Missouri. Loretta and Joe moved to Leasburg from Spanish Lake, Missouri in 1970 where they built and operated Coachlight Inn, now known as Skippy’s for 17 years. She also worked at various jobs in St. Louis and at Meramec Shoe in Sullivan. Her favorite pastime included spending time with her family and friends, feeding her hummingbirds, barbecuing, cooking superb meals, and relaxing on the Meramec River. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, William Jackson and Martha Jane Miller nee Graddy of Leasburg, Missouri, Jacob and Barbara Jean Reiner nee Luffy of Leasburg, Missouri, formerly of Germany; parents; step-father, Joseph VanGilder; brothers, James Reiner and Robert Reiner; an infant son at birth; brother-in-law, Gene Niedbalski; great grandson, Christian West; father-in-law, Joseph M.
