MO Local Obituaries for the Week of May 9, 2013 Jerry Cecil Hedrick Jerry Cecil Hedrick of Steelville, Missouri was born on Monday, September 8, 1941 in Steelville, Missouri to Cecil Lloyd and Sophie Fern Ransom Hedrick and passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 20 days. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy. He married Janet Sue Brown in Key West, Florida and to this union three children were born. Jerry later married Glenda Estell Holland on January 31, 1979 in Huntsville, Texas and they made their home together in Steelville, Missouri. He worked many years as a mechanic of heavy equipment and most recently worked for Gahr Construction, St. James, Missouri. He had attended Steelville Assembly of God Church and recently made a profession of faith. He had been a member of the Kiwanis Club and played Santa for several years in the community. At one time, he built a Hovercraft. He enjoyed rescuing injured animals and restoring them back to good health. His hobbies were making ceramic pottery, fishing, hunting, shooting black powder guns and playing games. He was a man that could take nothing and make something. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Sophie Hedrick; wife, Glenda Hedrick on November 8, 1996; and nephew, Nathan Hedrick. He is survived by his children, Tammie (Greg) Good of Louisburg, Kansas, Richard (Angel) Hedrick of Green Cove Springs, Florida, Tracey (Scott) Crosby of Osawatomie, Kansas and Eric (Amanda) Fruewirth of Sullivan, Missouri; brother, Don (Janet) Hedrick of Steelville, Missouri; niece, Kim (Jeff) Smith of Owensville, Missouri; special friend, Sheila Beers Anderson of Steelville, Missouri; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; other relatives and friends. Visitation was Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. and funeral service Friday, May 3, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri with Pastor Jerry Beers officiating. Burial was at the Steelville Cemetery with full military honors. Arrangements under the direction of the Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. James “Jim” F. Hendrix James “Jim” Frederick Hendrix of St. James, Missouri was born February 7, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri to Raymond Isaac Hill Hendrix and Helen Williams and passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at the age of 85 years. Jim was a longtime resident and business owner of St. James, Missouri. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an electrician abroad the USS Repose. After returning home from service, Jim opened a service station in St. Louis, Missouri, operating until 1955. In 1955 he went to work for Ronocco Coffee Company as a sales person. He reached the position of Regional Sales Director procuring such accounts as Steak-n-Shake, which the company still holds to this day. After 10 years of employment with Ronnoco Coffee, he then went to work for General Mills, Maxwell House Coffee division until 1971. Many in the area may remember Jim from the time he spent with Ruckert Meat Company as a route salesman, servicing local restaurants.  In 1979 Jim and his wife opened The Furniture Shop Upholstery, a business they operated together for the next 25 years. In later years Jim worked with his son, Raymond at the pre-owned car dealership that they opened and operated together beginning in 1985. Jim was always a person to be counted on and the family often joked that he collected people to take care of. He was always taking care of the elderly family member or lending a hand to a young couple starting out. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Isaac Hill Hendrix; mother, Helen Williams; wife, Patricia Hendrix and one grandson, Gary Gallamore. He is survived by his sons, Ray Hendrix and wife Angela of St. James, Missouri and James F. Hendrix, Jr. and wife Melissa of Cypress, Texas; daughters, Susan Brown and husband Wayne of St. Louis, Missouri, Mary Gallamore Davis and husband Gary of West Plains, Missouri, Wanda Shewmon of St. Louis, Missouri and Jama McAllister of Popular Bluff, Missouri; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Jim donated his body through the body donation program at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri - a program both he and his wife held in high regard. Arthur “Art” John Howald Arthur “Art” John Howald of Steelville, Missouri was born January 5, 1919 in Crawford County, Missouri to Frank and Jane Agnes Cain Howald and passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at the age of 94 years. On April 19, 1948, he married Susie “Sue” Elizabeth Summers. At the age of 22 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served honorably from 1941-1945. He was in combat in the South Pacific during World War II. He was awarded a Purple Heart and four Bronze Stars. In 1948 he became owner of Howald’s Hardware and Appliance in Steelville, Missouri until 1979. He bought a farm east of Steelville and spent many years raising cattle and farming. He enjoyed bowling and sponsored a team for several years. After retirement, he and Sue enjoyed traveling. In the early 1950’s, he became a Christian. He was a deacon and superintendent of Sunday school and involved in many other areas of church at First Baptist. Art was President of the Steelville Retirement Homes, Vice-President of the Steelville Community Services Corporation and a charter member of the Steelville Booster’s Club. He served as Cub Master for Cub Scouts and coached many Little League baseball teams. He enjoyed watching the Cardinals playing baseball. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Jane Howald; his wife, Sue Howald on October 16, 2001; one daughter, Katherine Sue Kenagy; sisters in-law, Miriam Howald and Elaine Taylor and husband Jim Taylor; and brother in-law, Jess Carroll. He is survived by his son, Kent Howald and wife Betty Ann of Steelville, Missouri; five grandchildren, Jonathan Thomas Howald of Orlando, Florida, David Arthur Howald and wife Liz of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Trenton Reed Kenagy of Seattle, Washington, Sean Barrett Kenagy and wife Jordan of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Allison Jane Caudle and husband Joe of Cuba, Missouri; one great grandson, Brooks Kenagy; one brother, Edwin Howald of St. Louis, Missouri; one sister-in-law, Barbara Carroll of Steelville, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Visitation was Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013 at the Britton- Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri with Rev. Kevin Farr and Dr. George T. Miller officiating. Memories were shared by Bryan Taylor. Special music of “I Know Whom I Have Believed” was sung by congregation and led by Bryan Taylor. Other music of “Blessed Assurance” was sung by Bryan Taylor and Cindy Gladden. The service concluded with “It is Well with My Soul” sung by Bryan Taylor and accompanied by Jan Weisel. Committal prayer and burial with full military honors by the U.S. Army were in the Steelville Cemetery. Casket bearers were David Howald, Jonathan Howald, Trenton Kenagy, Sean Kenagy, Allison Caudle and Leroy Martin. Honorary casket bearers were Jim Barksdale, John Britton, Ken Halbert, Charles Chipman, Floyd Reed, Jim Vaughn, Dan Cape and Larry Laney. Thomas Joseph Hughes Thomas Joseph Hughes of Cuba, Missouri was born Monday, October 4, 1971 at Rolla, Missouri to Jimmie and Diane (nee Michalik) Hughes and passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at Cuba, Missouri at the age of 41 years. Tommy as he was known by all his family and friends graduated from Cuba High School in 1990. He was an excellent basketball and baseball player during high school and had been a St. Louis Cardinal fan for years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking and just being outdoors. He was a very talented butcher and enjoyed growing a beautiful vegetable garden. Tommy always looked forward to holidays, family gatherings and deer season. He could sing all of the Willie Nelson songs, wrote amazing poetry and he was currently attending the Assembly of God Church in Steelville. Tommy’s proudest moment was 13 months ago when he became dad. He was preceded in death by his grandpa, Joe Michalik; and Grandpa and Grandma Hughes.He is survived by his son, Braiden Joseph Hughes of Salem, Missouri; father, Jimmie C. Hughes of Cuba, Missouri; mother, Diane and husband Sonny Sparks of Cuba, Missouri; one brother, James Joseph and wife Kelly Hughes of Steelville, Missouri; two sisters, Cheri Lynn and husband Terry Tune of Rolla, Missouri and Carolyn Sue and husband Danny Sanazaro of Cuba, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Visitation was from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the Mizell Funeral Home in Cuba, Missouri.
