Gloria Detmer
Gloria Detmer, 79, of Montgomery City, Mo., died at 12:45 a.m. on Friday,
May 2, 2003, at the New Florence Nursing and Care Center in New Florence,
Mo.
Gloria Detmer was born April 3, 1924, in Dallas, Texas to Jesus and Anita
Trigo Porrero. Mr. and Mrs. Porrero were from Madrid, Spain before moving
to Texas.
Gloria graduated from Eurslin Academy in Texas and later married Ralph A.
Detmer, November 20, 1964. He preceded her in death on May 19, 1995. Gloria
retired from Mercantile Bank in St. Louis after working many years in the
Probate Department.
In 1991 Ralph and Gloria moved to Montgomery City from a farm in
Cherryville, Mo. Gloria always loved being on a farm and looking after the
cattle and doing all the things you do in a farm setting. Gloria loved to
be with and take care of her family.
Mrs. Detmer is survived by one son, Randy Hinkel and wife, Nancy, of
Montgomery City, Mo.; two grandsons, Casey and Christopher Hinkel, both of
Montgomery City, Mo.; one brother, Eddie Porrero and wife, Mary Ruth, of
Dallas, Texas; cousin, Nolan Trigo and wife, Vera, of Dallas, Texas;
brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Elmer and Irene Detmer of Hermann, Mo.;
and six nieces and one nephew.
Graveside services were held at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2003, at the
Montgomery City Cemetery in Montgomery City, Mo. The Reverend Christopher
Cordes officiated. Casketbearers included Christopher Hinkel, Gary, Jonas,
Richard Cassidy, and Clay Park. Honorary Casketbearers included Eddie
Porrero and Nolan Trigo.
George Milton Dillow, Sr.
George Milton Dillow, Sr., of Cedarville, Ohio passed away Monday, May 5,
2003 at the age of 84 years. He was born November 18, 1918 to the late
Forrest and Florence (Chalk) Dillow at Cuba, Mo.
George honorably served his country in the United States Army during World
War II and received the Bronze Star for meritorious service. George was a
widower when on June 6, 1981 he married his wife Esther of 21 years.
Mr. Dillow was employed for Cummins Diesel for many years. He was described
by his family as a good man who would help anyone in need.
He is survived by his wife, Esther Dillow of Cedarville, Ohio, one son
George M. Dillow, Jr. and one daughter, Patricia A. Ramos. He is also
survived by his seven step-children, daughters, Cheryl, Carolyn, Lucinda
and Peggy, and sons, Allen, Peter and Oliver; 15 grandchildren and 11 great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 11, 2003 at Majestic Monuments in
Cuba, Mo. He will be laid to rest next to his parents and other family
members in Cuba, Mo.
Arrangements were under the care of Meyer-Boehmer & Feucht Funeral Home,
Dayton, Ohio.
Junies James Engelhardt
Junies James Engelhardt was born Monday, January 3, 1921, at Biloxi,
Mississippi, a son of the late Hazel and Rudolph J. Engelhardt.
He entered into rest Thursday, May 1, 2003, at the Phelps County Regional
Medical Center, Rolla, Mo., at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 28 days.
On June 22, 1959, at Belleville, Illinois, Junies was married to Verniece
Abney, daughter of Porter and Letha (Parks) Abney. They have enjoyed over
43 years together. Junies was retired from the United States Air Force,
having served more than 20 years. During this time he received the rank of
TSgt. E-6.
In addition to his parents, his twin brother preceded him in death, at
birth, Julius Engelhardt, and two other brothers, Jasper Engelhardt and
Rudolph Engelhardt; one sister, Rita and husband, John Liggio;
sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Althea Engelhardt, Ado Hunt, Verda and
Thurman Hawthorne, Leman Abney, Velma and Paul Byrd, Bertha and Leonard
Thornton, Shirley and Robert Herr and Norma Jean Skaggs.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife Verniece
Engelhardt of Steelville, Mo.; one brother, John Engelhardt of Kenner,
Louisiana, one sister, Mary Agnes Hunt of Bush, Louisiana; brothers-in-law
and sisters-in-law, Herman and Hilda Abney of St. Louis, Mo., Arnold and
Betty Abney of Steelville, Mo., Arthur and Shirley Abney of St. Charles,
Mo. and Martha Abney of Salem, Mo.; nieces, nephews, cousins, other
relatives and friends.
Junies James Engelhardt lay in state 5-9 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2003, at the
Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo.
Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, in the Britton
Chapel, Steelville, Mo., with Rev. Jerry Beers officiating.
Committal prayers and interment were in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Salem, Mo.
Serving as pallbearers were Brent Abney, Jim Abney, Rich Abney, Robbie
Abney, Larry Hunt, Donald Thornton, Kenneth Thornton and Jonny Troutt.
Honorary pallbearers were Brandon Bouse, Jason Troutt and Justin Troutt.
Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville,
Mo.
Billie June Laney
Billie June Laney was born Monday, June 1, 1925, at Cardwell, Mo., a
daughter of the late William Beaslum Lamb and Ella Mae (Jones) Lamb.
She entered eternal life Friday, May 2, 2003. at her home on Robin Hill
Drive, Steelville, Mo. at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 1 day.
On Easter Sunday, March 25, 1951, at Steelville, Mo., Billie was united in
marriage to Larry Laney. Two daughters, Lesley Ann and Lisa Susan were born
to this union. They have enjoyed over fifty-two years together.
Billie was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Steelville as
teacher, officer and did the "Christmas Is Sharing" program. She was a
charter member and past President of Meramec Extension Club. She was a stay
at home mother, helping Larry on his mail route and in their laundromat and
dry cleaner business. They have enjoyed their hobbies of bowling on a
couple's league, fishing and camping together; first in a homemade camper,
later progressing to a fifth wheel camper. Billie was an accomplished
seamstress and was always "burning the midnight oil," as she liked to put
it, sewing many items for her daughters.
In addition to her parents, her only sister, Judy and husband Lester
Thurston Ives and one grandson, Jeremy White, preceded her in death.
Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her devoted husband, Larry
Laney of the home; two daughters, Lesley and husband Jim White of St.
James, Mo., Lisa and husband Bill Pope of Rolla, Mo.; four grandchildren,
Rachel Jane White of Dallas, Texas, Zachary James White of Springfield,
Mo., Emily Ann Day and Leanna Pope of Rolla, Mo. and one
great-granddaughter, Sage Madison Day of Rolla, Mo.; other relatives and
many friends.
Billie June Laney lay in state 11-12 a.m. at the Britton Brothers Funeral
Home, and 1 p.m. until time of services 2 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2003 at the
First Baptist Church, Steelville, Mo. Dr. Cardis Bryan officiated with Rev.
Chuck Whitmire assisting. Kent Howald gave the eulogy. Special
congregational chorus and hymns were provided by the First Baptist Church
Quartet and Chorus and Jim and Georgia Beth Barksdale with Carolyn Hawkins
pianist.
Committal prayers and interment were in Steelville Cemetery, Steelville,
Mo. Serving as pallbearers were Jim Barksdale, Charley Chipman, Ken
Halbert, Robert Housewright, Floyd Reed and Dave Wells. Honorary
pallbearers were Randy Booth and Zachary White.
Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville,
Mo.
Melvin Clifford Mason
Melvin Clifford Mason passed away at his home in rural Steelville, Mo. on
Saturday, May 3, 2003 at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 20 days. He was
born in Portia, Arkansas on Monday, February 13, 1922.
Beloved husband of Marguerite Mason Nee Bowen, father and father-in-law of
Barbara and Harold Condra, Carolyn and Franklin Knowles and Russell and Jan
Mason; grandfather and father-in-law of Lisa and Michael Roberts, Shawn and
Wendy Condra, Deborah and Edward Dulom; Franklin, Rachel and Jesse Knowles
and Cara, Katie, Matthew and Kelsey Mason; great grandfather of Kaitlin and
Brayden Roberts; Jaylen, Macie and Piper Condra; Joshua, Clayton and
Franklin and Orion Knowles and Sean, Nicholas and Matthew Dulom.
Dear brother and brother-in-law of Perry Mason, Paul and Ada Mason, Avella
Lentz, Frank and Margaret Bowen, Blanche Bobbett, Harold and Betty Bowen,
John and Marilynn Bowen, Janet and Gerry Joiner and Susan and John
Beardsley, uncle and friend.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Judith, his parents,
William and Ida May Mason; one brother, James E. Mason; five half-brothers,
Willie, Charles and Carley B. Mason, Richard King, and infant King; five
half-sisters, Flottie, Myrtle and Gladys Mason, Golda King and Frances King
Zude.
Melvin Mason served honorably in the United States Army in World War II
from December 2, 1942 until December 9, 1945 when he was discharged. He
served with the 103rd Infantry Division, seeing combat in the European
Theatre of Operations, earned three Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, the
Combat Inf. Badge, and Good Conduct Medal. He was entitled to wear the
American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theatre
Campaign Ribbon, an Overseas Bar, and the Victory Ribbon and the Lapel
Button. He was transferred to the 45th Division in July 1945, from which he
was demobilized. At the time of his discharge, he enlisted in the United
States Army Reserves, where he served with the 102nd Inf. Division and the
85th Training Division, until mandatory retirement at age 60, having
achieved the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He retired from active duty in
the U.S. Army Reserves and reassigned to inactive status on March 13, 1982.
He was employed by the Public Service Company (later Bi-State Transit) in
March 1948, where he worked for 35 years, before retiring on May 1, 1983.
After retirement he and Marguerite moved to rural Steelville in June 1984
where they have lived the past 19 years. He died two days after the 20th
anniversary of his retirement.
Memorial services were held at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home,
Steelville, Mo. on May 9, 2003 at 1 p.m. Visitation before the service,
beginning at 11:30 a.m. Rev. Randy Curless officiated. Vocalist Becky Wade
and pianist Deloris Bell provided musical selections.
Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville,
Mo.
Gulenia Gertrude Mincher
Gulenia Gertrude Mincher nee Bays was born Tuesday, August 7, 1907, at
Caledonia, Mo., the oldest of seven children of the late George Orvel Bays
and Bertha Estelle (Huitt) Bays.
She departed this life Friday, May 9, 2003, at the Cuba Manor, Cuba, Mo.,
at the age of 95 years, 9 months and 2 days.
On April 4, 1927, Gulenia was united in marriage to Otis Ray Mincher by
Rev. Hughes at his home. Two sons and one daughter were born to this union.
They enjoyed 66 years together before his death, March 11, 1993.
In addition to her parents and husband, their daughter, Pauline Hughes; one
brother, Jewell Bays and four sisters, Leona Bays, Fern Lint, Mabel and
husband Earl Abney, Hallie and husband Smith Abney, preceded her in death.
Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her two devoted sons, Elmer
Orville Mincher and wife Betty of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., John Leroy
Mincher and wife Opal of Steelville, Mo.; one sister, Hester and husband
Harry Hutson of St. Louis, Mo.; another brother-in-law, Charles Lint of
Steelville, Mo.
Eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great great grandson;
nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends, who remember
her as a great lady, known for her good cooking. She cooked at Eagle Hurst
Ranch for twenty years and loved to cook for her family. Her family and
friends will miss her.
Gulenia Gertrude Mincher lay in state 4-8 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2003 at
the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2003 in the Britton
Chapel with Rev. Cletis Nichols officiating. Vocalist Larry Sherrill and
pianist Geraldine Sherrill provided musical selections.
Committal prayers and interment were in Skaggs Cemetery, rural Steelville,
Mo. Serving as pallbearers were Phil Hughes, Ronnie Hughes, Steve Hughes,
Jeff Luedke, Anthony Mincher, David Mincher and Rod Sherman.
Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville,
Mo.
Elsie Blanche Mullen
Elsie Blanche Mullen, 94, passed away March 20, 2003 in Lakeside, Arizona.
Elsie was born January 13, 1909 in Scotia, Mo. She was the beloved daughter
of James Albert Summers and Minnie Blanche Summers, nee Crabtree.
She was raised on the family farm in Scotia, Mo. She married Joseph Emil
Mullen on January 15, 1928 in a ceremony at the family farm in Crawford
County, Missouri.
During WWII she worked in the blue print section of the torpedo plant in
St. Louis. In 1945, they moved to Surprise, Arizona. She was active in the
First Baptist Church of Glendale, Arizona for a number of years.
When her husband retired from the Caterpillar Tractor Company Proving
Ground in 1969, they moved to Lakeside. She enjoyed gardening, canning and
the outdoors.
For the past 24 years she has spent most of her time at her son's ranch at
Hardcastle Gap, New Mexico. She loved ranching life, and the ranch families
of Catron County.
She is survived by her son, Norman J. Mullen of the home; one brother, Glen
Summers of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Katherine Summers of
Steelville, Mo.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one
son, Emil Paul Mullen; her brothers, Ray Summers and wife Evana, William
Summers, James Albert Summers, Jr. and wife Iva, Hugh Summers and Clarence
Summers; and one sister, Maude Summers.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the
Fletcher's Mortuary in Show Low, Arizona. Interment was in the Quemado, New
Mexico Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Fletcher's Mortuary in Show Low,
Arizona.
Frances Goldie Plank
Frances Goldie Plank nee Napples was born April 10, 1920 in Seattle,
Washington, the daughter of the late Michael Napples and Goldie (Peterman)
Napples.
Frances entered eternal rest Monday, May 5, 2003 at the Gibbs Care Center
in Steelville, Mo. at the age of 83 years and 25 days. She lived the past
twelve years at the Gibbs Care Manor.
Frances was united in marriage to Harold T. Plank on October 19, 1946. She
loved the precious and wonderful times she spent with her husband traveling
abroad for many years until his passing.
One sister, Margaret Shyrock, one brother, Michael Napples, Jr., and one
grandson, Michael Todd Plank, also preceded Frances in death.
Frances was the devoted mother of Gerald Michael Plank and wife Shirley
(Stites) of Steelville, Mo., Linda Jeanne Coleman of St. Louis, Mo., and
Sharon Louise Ripp and husband Mason of Omaha, Nebraska.
Frances was blessed with seven lovely grandchildren and eight wonderful
great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren are Michael Todd, Terri, Michelle,
Dawn, Andy, Laura, and Jon. Her great-grandchildren are Ashley, Kayla,
Jamie, Benjamin, Matthew, Mark, Taylor, and Alex.
Frances Goldie Plank lay in state 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at the
Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2003, in the Britton
Chapel, Steelville, Mo. with Rev. Jim Simmons officiating.
Committal prayers and interment were in the St. James Cemetery, St. James,
Mo. Serving as pallbearers were grandsons, Andy Ripp and Jon Ripp,
great-grandsons, Matthew Booker and Mark Booker and grandson-in-laws, Rod
Mell and Jimmy Hammond.
Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Brothers Funeral Home,
Steelville, Mo.
Marceline Scrivner
Marceline Scrivner was born Thursday, January 13, 1927, in Crawford County,
Mo., a daughter of the late Noah Orlando Housewright and Clara Housewright
(nee John).
She entered into rest Sunday, April 27, 2003, at the St. John's Medical
Center, Springfield, Mo., at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 14 days.
On August 12, 1950, Marceline was united in marriage to Mell Albert
Scrivner. They have enjoyed over fifty-two years together.
In addition to her parents, a brother, Robert Glen Housewright and wife
Anna Bell and a brother that died at birth, preceded her in death. She was
also preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Ambrose Greathouse and Paul
Burch and a sister-in-law, Connie Housewright.
Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her devoted husband, Mell
Scrivner of the home in Rolla, Mo.; a step-son Robert Scrivner and wife Jan
of Mesa, Arizona; two sisters and one brother, Rosalea Greathouse of
Steelville, Mo., Charles Lee Housewright of Mechanicsville, Maryland and
Kathleen Burch of Rolla, Mo.
Four nephews, Paul Greathouse and wife Sandy and Rodney Housewright, all of
Steelville, Mo., Kenneth Parrett of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Kenneth
Housewright and wife Connie of Mechanicsville, Maryland; four nieces, Lisa
Brady and husband Tom, Denise Fowler and husband Bill of Mechanicsville,
Maryland, Lillian Greathouse of Charleston, Illinois and Paula Crews of
Rolla, Mo.; six great-nieces, twelve great-nephews and great-great-nieces
and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Marceline Scrivner lay in state 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at the
Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo.
Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in the Britton
Chapel with Rev. Jerry Beers officiating.
Committal prayers and interment were in Steelville Cemetery, Steelville,
Mo. Serving as pallbearers were Robert Scrivner, Paula Crews, Paul
Greathouse, Chuck Knapp, Rodney Housewright, Rob Housewright, Jeff York,
Ken Parrett and Wesley Greathouse. Arrangements were under the direction of
Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo.
