Daphna Paulena Callahan
Daphna Paulena Callahan nee Howdeshell was born Thursday, December 17, 1925,
near Cherryville, Missouri, a daughter of the late Eldon E. Howdeshell and
Rose Eldora (Parrett) Howdeshell.
Daphna entered eternal rest on Monday, May 10, 2004 at her daughters' home
in St. Peters, Missouri, at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 23 days.
On Saturday, January 30, 1943, Daphna was united in marriage to Versel
James Callahan. They enjoyed over 52 years together before her beloved
Versel's passing on June 24, 1995. Four devoted children were born to this
union.
In addition to her parents and husband, Daphna was preceded in death by an
infant daughter Brenda Kay Callahan; brothers Elbert Parrett and wife
Myrna, Dwight Howdeshell and wife Margaret, Treff Hogan, Kenneth
Howdeshell, and infant brother James Howdeshell; and brothers-in-law Eddie
Lefler, Clarence Callahan, Clifford Callahan, Vernon Callahan, Arthur
Baker, and Raymond Baker; sisters-in-law Thelma Rodgers and Freida Hardin.
Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her loving children,
Donald James Callahan and wife Krista of Warrenton, Missouri, Versel Ray
Callahan and wife Carol of Montgomery City, Missouri, and Kathleen Masters
and husband Roy of St. Peters, Missouri; brother Noel Howdeshell and wife
Helen of Cuba, Missouri; sisters Anna Mae Biggs and husband Kenneth of
Overland, Missouri, Mary Lefler of Overland, Missouri, Ruth Ogle and
husband Bob of Steelville, Missouri, Mildred Conaway and husband Paul of
Cuba, Missouri, and Juanita Crabtree and husband Don of Bridgeton,
Missouri; sisters-in-law Vivian Hogan of Truxton, Missouri and Almeda
Campbell of Cuba, Missouri; grandchildren Nicole Callahan, Shane Callahan,
Shanna Callahan, Keith Smith, Christal Jones, Lisa Masters, Laura Masters,
Melissa Callahan, and Michelle Callahan; great-grandchildren Chase Jones
and Shalynn Jones; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many
dear friends.
Daphna Paulena Callahan lay in state 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at
the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Funeral services were held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2004 in the Britton
Chapel with Rev. Richard Martin officiating. Musical selections were
provided by vocalist Carol Coleman accompanied by pianist Shirley Brown.
Committal prayers and interment were in the Freeman Cemetery, Cherryville,
Missouri. Honoring Daphna by serving as pallbearers were grandson Shane
Callahan and nephews David Biggs, Jason Conaway, Mike Conaway, Larry
Howdeshell, and Terry Lefler.
Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Britton Brothers Funeral Home,
Steelville, Missouri.
Daphne Sarie Gahr
Daphne Sarie Gahr nee Martin was born Tuesday, November 30, 1909 at
Cherryville, Missouri, a daughter of the late William Madison Martin and
Mary Emaline (Wisdom) Martin.
Daphne entered eternal rest Sunday, May 9, 2004, at Salem Memorial
Hospital in Salem, Missouri at the age of 94 years, 5 months and 9 days.
On June 1, 1929, Daphne was united in marriage to Everett William Gahr.
They enjoyed 62 years together until her beloved Everett's passing in
1991. Two loving children were born to this union.
Daphne and Everett owned a small farm that her grandfather homesteaded.
That farm had remained in her family for 119 years. She and Everett
enjoyed raising Angus cattle as they did most of their married life
together. Daphne also worked as a custodian for the Cherryville School and
later as a cook at the Spare Rib Inn at Steelville, Missouri.
Daphne professed her belief in Jesus Christ and was a charter member of
the Viburnum Christian Church where she attended regularly and shared her
talent with others by playing the piano for thirty years. She was also
active in church as a Sunday School teacher. Daphne enjoyed crocheting,
knitting, reading, and loved gardening. Daphne was a very loving and dear
mother and grandmother, always ready to spend time with her grandchildren.
She was described as an inspiration and such a positive influence on her
family and friends. She had a way of always seeing the best in everyone
and never missed an opportunity to visit those she would come in contact
with. She was very much loved, will always be fondly remembered and deeply
missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents and her loving husband, Daphne was preceded in
death by her brothers Trenton Martin and wife Bessie, Kenneth Martin and
wife Delma; sisters Pearl Scott and husband Perry, Orene Eaton and husband
John, Lida Hendrix and husband Arthur, and Geraldine Martin.
Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her son Bill Gahr and wife
JoAnn of Fenton, Missouri, daughter Betty Brown and husband Julius, Jr. of
Salem, Missouri; brother Dewayne Martin and wife Lena of Cuba, Missouri;
sister Juanita Morgan and husband Marlan of Sullivan, Missouri; nine
grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one
great-great-granddaughter; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and
many dear friends.
Daphne Sarie Gahr lay in state 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at the
Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2004, in the Britton
Chapel, her son Bill Gahr officiating, with George Civey and Harold Slade
assisting. Granddaughter Rhonda Kuhlmann gave the eulogy. Musical
selections were provided by Theresa Ware and Wanda Ransom.
Committal prayers and interment were in the Steelville Cemetery,
Steelville, Missouri. Those honoring Daphne by serving as pallbearers were
Julius Brown, III, Bobby Frank, Kevin Gahr, Joshua Hagler, Chris Kuhlmann,
and Jeff Kuhlmann. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Don Hedgecoth,
Hershel Hedgecoth, Robert Brand, Charles Scott Leach, Jesse Strickland,
Joseph Rose, Ed Kuhlmann, and Dan Cramer.
Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Britton Brothers Funeral Home,
Steelville, Missouri.
Wiley W. Smith Jr.
Wiley W. Smith Jr. age 77, former resident of Cherryville, Missouri passed
away on Sunday, May 16, 2004 at Sunset Hills Health and Rehabilitation
Center in St. Louis Missouri.
Mr. Smith was born in Ellsinore, Missouri on December 11, 1926. He was
preceded in death by his wife Zelda Nadine Smith (nee Rickman), one
brother Jim Smith and three sisters, Helen Alcorn, Elizabeth (Tiny)
Holmes, and Louise (Toots) Johnson.
He is survived by his loving son, Kenneth Joe Smith of Phoenix Arizona and
two grandchildren, Andrew Smith of Phoenix and Amy Smith of Kansas City,
one sister, Mrs. Annabell Fulford of Ellsinore Missouri and her husband
Bill, and one brother, Billy G. Smith and his wife Norma, residents of
Davisville Missouri.
"Uncle Wiley" will be greatly missed by numerous nieces and nephews,
extended family, and many friends. Cremation will be in St. Louis. The
Memorial Service and Internment will be in Senath, Missouri (date
pending).
