Steelville Star-Crawford Mirror, Steelville, Crawford Co. MO Local Obituaries for the Week of May 20, 2009 Dr. Glenn E. Brand Dr. Glenn E. Brand was born in Steelville, Missouri on October 21, 1917 to James H. and Irene O. Brand, and passed away in Lincoln, Nebraska on May 10, 2009. He graduated in 1939 from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. After graduation, he was employed by Cerro de Pasco as a mining engineer working in the Peruvian Andes. He returned to the United States at the outbreak of World War II and enlisted in the US Coast Guard. He saw action at the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy aboard the attack and transport ship U.S.S. Joseph T. Dickman. After the war he married Janet C. Stout, a Navy nurse. Glenn attended graduate school earning his Masters from MSM and a Doctorate in Physical Chemistry from Washington State University. He returned to Missouri and was an assistant professor of Chemical Engineering and assistant department chair at MSM. In 1956 he and his growing family moved to southern California where he worked for Atomics International, a division of North American Aviation. He was an engineering group leader and was instrumental in project SNAP, which put the first nuclear reactor in space in the mid 1960’s. Glenn retired from North American Rockwell in 1972 and returned to Steelville. He and Janet built a house and raised Black Angus cattle for the next 25 years. He was Crawford County President of the Missouri Farm Bureau and a board member of the Steelville Telephone Exchange. One of his proudest accomplishments was teaching high school physics for a year at Cuba High School. He was honored with one silver dollar mounted on a plaque for his service to the community. He was a member of the American Nuclear Society, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical & Petroleum Engineers, and the Scientific Research Society of America. In 1998 he was inducted into the Academy of Chemical Engineers at Missouri S&T, formerly the University of Missouri Rolla. The Glenn and Janet Brand Endowment Fund has been established to support the Department of Chemical Engineering at Missouri S&T. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Cardwell; daughter-in-law, Karen Brand (John); and his parents. Surviving are his wife, Janet Brand of Steelville, Missouri; one daughter, Jennifer Brand (Nick Webb) of Lincoln, Nebraska; six sons; John Brand of Minneapolis, Minnesota, James Brand (Marie) of Omaha, Nebraska, Jack Brand (Joni) of Woodinville, Washington, Glenn Brand (Mindy) of Watauga, Texas, Jeff Brand of Steelville, Missouri and Joel Brand (Ann) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 12 grandchildren and one great grandson. A memorial service will be held later this summer in Missouri. Condolences can be sent to Aspen Mortuary in Lincoln, Nebraska.
