Steelville Star-Crawford Mirror, Steelville, Crawford Co. MO Local Obituaries for the Week of May 29, 2002 Nellie E. Bacon Nellie E. Bacon of Bourbon, Mo. passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2002 at the age of 77. Mrs. Bacon was born on September 7, 1924 in Hinch, Mo. to Alexander and Bertha (Summers) Adams. She has remained a lifelong resident of the Bourbon area. Nellie was baptized as a child in the Methodist faith. On July 19, 1945 she was united in marriage to Ross E. Bacon in Rolla, Mo. After 49 years and 8 months of being together, Mr. Bacon preceded her in death in 1995. Nellie worked for over 44 years as a sewing room supervisor at Paramount Headwear in Bourbon. She especially enjoyed cats and working in her flower garden. Nellie also found pleasure in reading and sewing. She will be remembered and cherished as a very independent and loving person. She is survived by one brother, Walter Adams and wife, Evelyn, of Bourbon; one sister-in-law, Lenora Adams of Bourbon; nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bacon was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Adams, a sister in infancy, and one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roy and Marie Tiefenbrunn. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon with Pastor Terry King officiating. Interment was in the Bourbon Cemetery. Visitation was from 4:30 until 9 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 2002 at the Eaton Chapel in Bourbon. Elizabeth Adella Smith Elizabeth Adella Smith nee Slovensky was born Monday, March 26, 1917, at Steelville, Missouri, a daughter of the late Ernie Otto "Ed" Slovensky and Estella Verna Slovensky (nee Brown). She entered eternal rest Sunday, May 19, 2002 at the Gibbs Care Center, Steelville, Missouri at the age of 85 years, one month and 23 days. Elizabeth was united in marriage to Waldemar Clarence "Pete" Peterson, December 30, 1951. One son Clarence Herman Peterson was born to this union. After Pete's death, March 21, 1967, she married George Harold Smith, January 13, 1979, he preceded her in death, August 24, 1984. Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her devoted son Clarence Peterson and wife Vickie of Cuba, Missouri; one step-son Glenwood Turnbough and wife Judy of Steelville, Missouri; three brothers and one sister Ernest Slovensky and wife Arline of Montgomery City, Missouri, Henry Slovensky and wife Vivian of Steelville, Missouri, Mary Lou and husband Robert Woods of St. Clair, Missouri, and Edward Slovensky and wife Luna of Grants Pass, Oregon; brother-in-law Jerry Peterson and sister-in-law Anna Marie Gowey both of Iowa. Two granddaughters Janie and Rachel Peterson of Cuba, Missouri; five step-grandchildren, Glendel "Buddie" Turnbough and wife Lisa of Davisville, Missouri, Danny Turnbough and wife Mary of Dillard, Missouri, Jimmy Turnbough of Davisville, Missouri, Stephanie and husband Ronnie Pyatt, Jr., and Melinda and husband Justin Schmitt all of Steelville, Missouri; two step great grandchildren; dear friend Alice Palmer of Oregon; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, former students, and many friends. She retired as a public school teacher in 1977 having taught in rural Crawford County, Steelville, Kansas City, Rolla and in Nogales, Arizona. She was a member of Missouri Retired Teachers Association, a member of Cuba Methodist Church and the Ladies Missionary Group of the Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and assisting in her grandchildren's home education. She was a loving and generous mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will be missed by all that knew her. Elizabeth Adella Smith lay in state 4-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at the Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2002 in the Britton Chapel with Rev. Michael Hannah and Rev. James Self officiating. Rev. Thomas Slovensky, her nephew assisted. Her granddaughters Janie and Rachel Peterson and daughter-in-law Vickie Peterson provided musical selections with Janet Combs pianist. Committal prayers and interment was in Liberty Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri. Serving as pallbearers were Thomas Slovensky, Ronald Slovensky, Bret Buckley, Pete Mitchell, John Ehrenreich and Shawn Combs. Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Newel F. Webb Newel F. Webb of Cuba, Missouri was born on October 21, 1923 in Muskegon, Michigan to the union of Newell F. Webb and Zilpha (Moody) Webb and passed away on May 19, 2002 at the age of 78 years, six months and 29 days. In 1952 he was united in marriage to Ruth Voegele in Angola, Indiana. They have been happily married for 50 years. Newel was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Wilma Newbre. Newel was a veteran of World War II, he served in the Army of the United States of America and served in the New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Solomons and Philippines campaigns and was honorably discharged on November 12, 1945. One of his favorite hobbies was golfing. He could be seen on the golf course, walking, nearly everyday. Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his loving wife Ruth Webb; four daughters, Gloria Leopold, Lenore Bartlett, Barbara Berryman and Beverly Miller. Two brothers Harrison Tiemann and Ralph Andre; one sister Marlene Hartman; 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Newell was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, good friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Memorial services for Newel F. Webb were held at the Britton Funeral Home in Cuba, Missouri on Thursday, May 23, 2002 at 2 p.m. with Woodrow Martin officiating. Interment was in Jefferson Barracks Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri. All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri. Barbara Jane Willis Barbara Jane Willis of Cuba, Missouri was born on January 4, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri to the union of Mendell Randolph and Louella Grace (Mabury) Randolph and passed away on May 20, 2002 at Cuba, Missouri at the age of 63 years four months and 16 days. On July 8, 1993 she was united in marriage to Harold Willis in Columbia, Missouri. They have been happily married for eight years. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Mendell Randolph and Grace Randolph Bay. Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her loving husband Harold Willis; one son Jay Scott Harris; one daughter Laura Ann Harris; one granddaughter Janna Summers; one brother, Richard Randolph; one sister Sally Deadrick and husband Ed; very dear aunt Ann Shockley; other relatives and many friends. Barbara was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and a good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Barbara Jane Willis nee Randolph was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri where funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Eric Smith officiating. Interment was in the Meramec Hills Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri.
