MO Local Obituaries for the Week of June 6, 2018 Eugene Joseph "Gene" Bausch Eugene Joseph "Gene" Bausch of Cuba, Missouri was born Wednesday, June 21, 1939 at Sherman, Missouri to Ernest and Mary (nee Tinkle) Bausch and passed away on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the age of 78 years. Gene proudly served in the United State Marine Corps from August 22, 1958 until August 21, 1961 and he earned the Good Conduct Medal. On February 14, 1963 Gene was united in marriage to Judy Ann Talbert. Gene worked in construction for many years, he also worked at Anderson College before they moved to Missouri. After moving to Cuba, Gene went to work for Wallis Oil, at the Cuba Mobil On the Run, in the maintenance department. Gene enjoyed woodworking, fishing and taking care of the lawn and his beautiful vegetable garden. Gene was an avid John Wayne and the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball fan. He spent hours watching western movies. Gene never met a stranger and loved to joke. Becker (nee Grayson) of Steelville, Missouri was born to Orville S. and Alta Belle (Snow) Grayson on October 28, 1919 and passed away Friday, May 25, 2018 at the age of 98 years, 6 months and 7 days. On December 9, 1939 Edith and Chester S. Becker were united in marriage at the Presbyterian Parsonage, the Rev. Samuel Roper officiating. Edith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Steelville, Missouri for 86 years. Her fifth grade teacher, Lucille Perkins invited her to church when she was 12 years old. She served her church faithfully on the Session and was a member of the Philathean Circle. In 1954 Edith began employment with the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service, an outreach of the University of Missouri. In her 10th year of service she was promoted as the first female office manager in the state of Missouri. She loved to travel and along with her childhood friend, Roberta Kehner McDaniel, she toured Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, England, Scotland and Ireland. She and Roberta along with Bill and Jenny Donnelson saw every capital in the continental United States. She cruised to Alaska, and in her own way proclaimed she had no desire to see Hawaii. Seldom in life do little girls remain friends forever. Edith treasured those childhood friends. They called themselves "the Birthday Girls" and they eagerly celebrated each ones birthday every year. She was the best "cooker" her grandson Jeff proclaimed. Ed Schwieder always said, "if Colonel Sanders could fry chicken like this he'd be a 5-Star General." In her own handwriting she wrote out 200 recipes and asked her son Edward to make the copies to give as Christmas gifts. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Chester; parents, Orville and Alta Grayson; brothers, Stafford (Jean) and Calvin (Lillian); brothers-in-law, Bill Welch, and Edward (Hildred) Becker; great grandson, Craig Schmidt; and lifelong friends Roberta McDaniel, Theresa Schwieder, Wilma Earls, Eileen Cape and Irene Eaton. Stanley Lee Martin Stanley Lee Martin of Steelville, Missouri was born on Tuesday, February 13, 1940 in Cherryville, Missouri to Fred Franklin and Martha Caroline (Setzer) Martin and passed away on Friday, June 1, 2018 at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 19 days. Stanley graduated from Cherryville High School. He married Berneal Dunlap on July 26, 1958. After Berneal's passing, he later married Velma Marie Hafley on September 22, 1994 in Cherokee, North Carolina by an Indian Baptist Minister. Stanley worked and retired from the Missouri Highway Department and later worked many years as a Picture Consultant with Olan Mills. He attended the United Baptist Church of Steelville, Missouri and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Steelville, Missouri. Stanley loved to hunt and fish, go camping and ride 4-wheelers with the guys. He loved motorcycles and rabbit hunting with his beagles. He enjoyed playing gospel music with his wife. He also enjoyed jamming with the Abneys. James Alan Mitchell Sr. James Alan Mitchell Sr. of Cuba, Missouri was born on Saturday, January 31, 1959 in Youngstown, Ohio to Paul C. and Marilyn Ward Mitchell and passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at the age of 59 years, 3 months and 30 days. Jim was raised in Girard, Ohio most of his life. He then served his country honorably in the United States Army, also in the National Guard and the Reserves. He worked as a production supervisor for ASC Corporation in Kansas City, Missouri for 15 years in automobile manufacturing. He was a member of American Legion and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinal's ball team. Jim was a believer in Jesus Christ and was a very generous and honest man. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Marilyn Mitchell; mother-in-law, Sallye (Bill) Lemons; and brothers-in-law, Dino Capaldi, Edwin Worthen and Don Worthen. Bennie Joe "Ben" Pennock Bennie Joe "Ben" Pennock, formerly of Cuba and Steelville, Missouri area, passed away June 2, 2018 at the age of 67 years. In July of 1969 he married Ruby Marie Bilbrey and two children were born. In 1970 he confessed Christ and was baptised at the Cherryville First Baptist Church. Ben worked at Briarwood Manor, Cuba and St. James nursing home. He was employed at several grocery stores in both Cuba and Steelville. In 1986 Ben and Ruby were divorced but remained friends. Ben moved to St. James, Missouri and along with Richard Clemens established a business called C.P. Woodshop. Ben built furniture, cabinets and houses, building a small community west of St. James called Cedar Villa. For years Ben enjoyed woodwork, oil painting, building water falls/fish ponds and growing flowers. He enjoyed making the enviroment a more beautiful place for everyone. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jaunita Pennock. He is survived by children, Walter Clifford "Wally" Pennock of Cuba, Missouri and Holly Marie Pennock of Rolla, Missouri; one grandson, Tyler Glenn Neff of Rolla, Missouri; father, Walter Benjamin Pennock; one sister, Yvonne Schnieder; two brothers, Larry Dale (Pam) Pennock and Robin (Susie) Pennock, all of Steelville, Missouri; other realtives and friends. Martha Ceta Smith Martha Ceta Smith, formerly a resident of Cook Station, Missouri, was born June 6, 1930 to Forrest and Lorene Smith in Houston, Texas and passed away Monday, March 18, 2018 at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 13 days. She graduated from Greenfield High School, Greenfield, Illinois and attended Blackburn College, Carlinville, Illinois. On February 26, 1954 she married Clarence V. Beck Jr. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Carlinville, Illinois. Martha was a big fan of Southern Gospel music and was intereested in handicraft hobbies such as jewelry making, crafting, wooden puzzles and ceramics. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Claudia Shaughnessey. She is survived by her step daughter, Nancy V. Harold Melvin Rector Jr. Harold Melvin Rector Jr. of Springfield, Missouri, formerly of Cuba, Missouri, was born on November 1, 1953 to Harold (Bud) Rector and Alice Rector Glaese (nee Martin) and passed away on May 28, 2018 at the age of 64 years. Harold graduated from Cuba High School in 1971 and later Linn Technical College where he studied auto body technology. Harold worked several years utilizing his auto body degree, volunteered for several churches and schools, and worked at the Springfield Sheltered Workshop. In his free time he enjoyed doing puzzles, playing word games and crocheting hangers. Harold lived at Joy Assisted Living in Springfield, Missouri from 2004 until January 2018 when he moved to Magnolia Square Nursing and Rehabilitation Center to live out his final days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Alice; and his grandparents, William and Anna Martin and Frank and Elsie Rector. John Wayne Vick John Wayne Vick of Leasburg, Missouri was born on Thursday, October 22, 1942 in Clinton, Kentucky to John Ralph and Martha Emma May Vick and passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at the age of 75 years. John earned his Bachelor of Engineering degree at Oklahoma City University and went to work for Douglas Corporation in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which later became McDonnell-Douglas. In 1994 he transferred to the St. Louis area to continue to work for McDonnell-Douglas then Boeing. After 33 years as an engineer, he retired to spend more time with his family and pursue his passion of fishing and woodworking. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Cuba, Missouri where he had served as a Trustee. He was a member of the NRA and Bass Masters.
