MO Local Obituaries for the Week of June 15, 2011 James “Jim” Chiapel James (Jim) Chiapel was born December 17, 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri to James and Mary Ann (Brundies) Chiapel, and passed away June 1, 2011 at the age of 85 years. Jim was a Life Member of VFW Post 2025, DAV and IAMAW.  He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1942 to 1946 aboard the U.S.S. Snowden in both the North Atlantic and the South Pacific. He was a machinist for 50 years and had worked for W.B. Knights Machine Co. and retired from Anheuser Busch Brewery. Jim coached CYC basketball and softball for over 20 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Ann Chiapel; his wife, Rita Nadine (Boyer) Chiapel; daughters, Patricia Chiapel and Cindy Schneider; brothers, Raymond and Nick Chiapel and great great granddaughter, Faith. He is survived by his daughter, Jeanne Bowers of Rolla, Missouri; son-in-laws, Bill Bowers of St. James, Missouri and Guy Schneider of North Carolina; sister, Agnes Neal of North Carolina; nine grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2011 at James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla, Missouri. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Donald “Don” Eugene Crabtree Donald “Don” Eugene Crabtree of Bridgeton, Missouri was born July 15, 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri and raised at Davisville, “Pucky Huddle,” Missouri and passed away at DePaul Medical Center in Bridgeton, Missouri on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at the age of 73 years. Don was always respected and admired for his work ethic; he retired in 1991 after 36 years from McDonnell Douglas and returned as a consultant for The Boeing Company and retiring again in 1999 after a long career in aviation technology. He continued to work part-time the last 11 years as a starter at Berry Hill Golf Course. He was an avid golfer, skilled bowler and dinner table comedian.    He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Adeline Crabtree; his sister-in-law, Daphna Callahan and husband Versel; brothers-in-law, Eddie Lefler, Bob Ogle, Noel Howdeshell and wife Helen and Elbert, Treff, Dwight, Kenneth and James. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Juanita Crabtree (nee Howdeshell); children, Nancy Preuss and Connie Kaiser; siblings, Bob (JoAnn) Crabtree and Carol Lingle; grandchildren, Katherine, Makenzie and Victoria; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary Lefler and Anna Mae Biggs and husband Kenneth, all of Overland, Missouri, Ruth Ogle of Steelville, Missouri, Mildred Conaway and husband Paul of Cuba, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Orla Edward Davis Jr. Orla Edward Davis Jr. of St. James, Missouri was born May 27, 1944 in Dade County, Missouri to Orla Edward Sr. and Lola Bird Davis and passed away at his home on June 10, 2011 at the age of 67 years and 14 days of age. On June 27, 1981 at the Flags Springs Church in St. James, Missouri he was united in marriage to Lillian Faye McDaniel. Orla was an over the road truck driver from 1981 to 2010 for Royal Hauling, Transit and Backhoe Service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orla Davis Sr. and Lola Davis; son, Timothy Davis; sisters, Thelma King and Helen Finn; brothers, Calvin Davis, Leonard Davis and Bob Davis. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Faye Davis of St. James, Missouri; sons, Charles Davis of Rolla, Missouri and Kyle Davis and wife Shyla of Mt. Charles Light Charles Light was born on April 20, 1928 to Edward and Anna (Bassett) Light in Lecoma, Missouri and passed away June 5, 2011. He was united in marriage to Marjorie E. Hodge on September 16, 1950 and to this union eight children were born. Charles graduated from Newburg High School and went on to attend Warrensburg Teachers College. After graduating from college he went on to teach in several country schools. Charles was inducted into the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War. After the war he came back to St. Charles, Missouri helping establish the Church of God there. He returned to Rolla where he worked for the Highway Patrol as a driver’s examiner and the United States Postal Service. Charles accepted Christ at the age of 21. He was very active in his church. He loved the Lord and raised his children to love the Lord also. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Anna Light; a son, Paul Allen Light; brothers, Ralph, Marvin, Wayne and Tommy Light; sisters, Dorothy Neely and Cordelia Grayson. Brenda was baptized on December 9, 1955 at the First Christian Church of Fredericktown, Missouri, then later attended other churches and enjoyed gospel singings after moving to Viburnum, Missouri. She married Gary Priest on July 12, 1964 in Fredericktown, Missouri and to this union two sons were born. Her hobbies were sewing and quilting. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Anita Stevenson; sister-in-law, Judy Stevenson and nephew, Neil Maxwell. Ray of St. James, Missouri was born in Phelps County, Missouri on September 8, 1934 to Delmar and Laura (Dean) Ray and passed away June 6, 2011 at the Phelps County Regional medical Center in Rolla, Missouri at the age of 76 years. Joe served his country in the United States Army serving in the Korean War. He has owned and operated the Hwy. F Grocery Store for the last 25 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delmar and Laura Ray and a sister, Geneva Wright. Walter Albert Scantlan Walter Albert Scantlan of Harrisburg, Illinois was born to George Albert and Nina Mae (Kitchen) Scantlan on July 31, 1931 in Earlsboro, Oklahoma and passed away Saturday, June 11, 2011 at Herrin Memorial Hospital in Herrin, Illinois at the age of 79 years. Walter was united in marriage to Elva Ruth Lane on May 29, 1954 in Equality, Illinois and to this union three children were born. Walter graduated from Cuba High School in Cuba, Missouri and entered the United States Air Force on September 11, 1951 to serve in the Korean Conflict. He left the military on September 10, 1955 in Del Rio, Texas as a Staff Sergeant. Walter worked for McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis as an Assistant Foreman until he retired in 1984. They moved to Harrisburg, Illinois in 1994. Walter was a member of Berkeley Masonic Lodge #667 A.F. & A.M. He also served as a Deacon of several churches, Grandview Baptist Church in Ferguson, Missouri and Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Mitchellville, Illinois. Ella “Mabel” Simpson Ella “Mabel” Simpson, nee Adams of Steelville, Missouri was born April 14, 1918 in Steelville, Missouri to John Matthew and Suzanna (Ray) Adams and passed away Friday, June 3, 2011 at Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla, Missouri at the age of 93 years. On April 28, 1934 in Steelville, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Leonard Simpson. Mabel was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed quilting and collecting “knick-knacks.” She also enjoyed cooking for her family and was considered a “good cook.” She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Suzanna Adams; her husband, Leonard in 1989; one son, Maurice Simpson; one daughter, Wilma Landzettel and husband Robert; two brothers, Clarence Adams and wife Ruth and infant brother, Harry Adams; five sisters, Edith Isgriggs and husband Clarence, Ethel Pinson and husband Roy, Leona Halbert and husband Horace, Gladys Summers and husband Walter and Vivian Ransom and husband Dewey and one great grandchild. West of Cuba, Missouri was born June 17, 1916 at Crawford County, Missouri to Rudolph Carl and Alvina (nee Wirz) Weigle and passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Cuba, Missouri at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 18 days. Catherine was united in marriage to John E. West on April 21, 1935 at the Lutheran Church of Bourbon, Missouri and to this union three children were born. Catherine worked as a sales clerk for many years in St. Louis and in Indiana before retiring. After moving back to Cuba, Catherine attended the First Presbyterian Church of Cuba and later Trinity Chapel. She was a 50+ year member of the Eastern Star and a member of the Golden Mariners. In 1999 she was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award from Cuba Manor. She was a hostess for Peoples Bank monthly Customer Appreciation Day from 2000-2006. She was an excellent cook and was well known for her apple crumb pie. She enjoyed canning, tending to her flowers and in her later years playing bingo. She was a lady of great determination and love, of which she always shared with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Alvina Weigle; husband, John E. West; son-in-law, Chuck Stewart; one brother, Samuel P. Weigle; three sisters, Olga Weigle, Frances Weigle and Hazel Catanzaro; two brothers-in-law, Cosimo Catanzaro and James Hamilton Sr.; other relatives and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Stewart of Cuba, Missouri; two sons, Carl and wife Deborah West and John and Pamela West, all of Indianapolis, Indiana; one sister, Betty Hamilton of Cuba, Missouri; nine grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; other relatives and friends.
