MO Local Obituaries for the Week of June 17, 2015 Jesse "Jess" Howard Jesse "Jess" Howard Hogan of Steelville, Missouri was born October 4, 1927 at Dillard, Missouri to Melvin Lafayette and Mamie Dicy Sellers Hogan and passed away Friday, June 5, 2015 at the age of 87 years. On May 26, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri he married Erma Barr and to this union two children were born. Jess graduated from Cherryville High School and served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during W.W. II. He was employed at Laclede Gas in St. Louis for 36 years and retired in 1989. For several years, he was a deacon and member at the Berkley Freewill Baptist Church and also attended the Calvary Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church in Fenton. For the last several years, he attended the Steelville First Assembly of God Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in St. Louis, Missouri. Jess loved to ride horses and was an active member of the local Saddle Club. In his younger years, he loved to camp, go boating and water ski. He also enjoyed playing ping pong. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Mamie Hogan; three brothers, Thurston Hogan and wife Pearl, Harry Lee Hogan and wife Virginia and Franklin Hogan; three sisters, Irma Scull and husband Charles, Dolores Kessler Knox and husband Ed and Betty Cowling; brother-in-law, Ronnie Barr and sister-in-law, Georgia Hill and husband Bob. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Erma Hogan of Steelville, Missouri; one son, David Hogan and wife Myra of Spartanburg, South Carolina; one daughter, Deborah Scott and husband Ron of Eureka, Missouri; one brother, Paul Hogan of Boss, Missouri; three grandchildren, Brian Scott and wife Crystal, Lindsay Glover and husband Jason and Lorie Phillips and husband Mike; two brothers-in-law, Finis Barr and wife Diane of Steelville, Missouri and Tom Barr and wife Patty; four sisters-in-law, Joan Barr, Doris Gibbs and husband John, Marilyn Dungan and husband Don and Janet Wood and husband Lyndell; other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Steelville First Assembly of God Church in Steelville, Missouri with Rev. Jerry Norris officiating. Special music of "Untitled Hymn" was sung by Brian Scott. Other music of "Go Rest High" was sung by Rev. Jerry Beers and Ron Scott. Accompanying all music was Ron Scott. Memories were shared by John Gibbs, Finis Barr, Ron Scott and Rev. Jerry Beers. Committal prayer, interment and full military honors by the U.S. Army were in the Sellers Cemetery, Dillard, Missouri. James Edward Jackson James Edward Jackson of St. James, Missouri was born on February 25, 1938 in Bloomfield, Missouri to Ercel and Rebecca McFarland Jackson and passed away Monday, June 8, 2015 at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 14 days. He was united in marriage to Sharon Black on February 26, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He served his country in Air Force. He was preceded in death by one son, Shawn Lewis; and one sister, Jean Held. Stanley Ellis Johnson Sr. Stanley Ellis Johnson Sr. of Rolla, Missouri was born on May 23, 1963 in St. Louis, Missouri to Stanley Dean and Lola Jewell Cranfill Johnson and passed away June 1, 2015 at the age of 52 years and 9 days. He was a drywaller and in the building trades. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Lola Johnson; two brothers, Louie and John Johnson; one sister, Wilma Lewis ;and one nephew, Rodney Lewis. Reeves of Bourbon, Missouri was born at Bourbon, Missouri on September 25, 1931 to Jess and Rosa (Jones) Pennock and passed away Thursday, June 11, 2015 at the age of 83 years. Later in life she was united in marriage to Alva Harrison Reeves and to this union five children were born. Peggy was employed for a time at Fashion Shoe in Sullivan, Missouri and later at the Bourbon laundromat. Music held a special place in her heart as she and her siblings could all play instruments including the guitar, banjo, fiddle, bass and accordion. Music was the center of most get-togethers. Peggy and her brother Lee had a radio show on Sullivan's KTUI where they played the old country songs. They would also play at many of the area dances. Peggy was also an avid gardener and always had fresh vegetables in the summer to enjoy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jess and Rosa Pennock; her husband, Alva Harrison Reeves; two daughters, Joanne and Bev; a daughter-in-law, Jean Reeves; six brothers, Lawrence, Lee, Jessie, Ted, Roger and Bob Pennock; and three sisters, Nellie Miller, Daisy Paul and Martha McClary. She is survived by three sons, Dave Reeves of Bourbon, Missouri, Gerald Reeves of Cuba, Missouri and Alva Eugene Reeves and wife Darlene of Leslie, Missouri; six grandchildren; eight great grand- children; four great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Stanley Robert Scales Stanley Robert Scales was born April 24, 1923 to an Irish Scandinavian railroad engineer and a German homemaker in Middletown, New York and passed away May 2, 2015. He was a graduate of the School of Mines and a WWII U.S. Coast Guard veteran. He was globally renowned as a chief metallurgist for Hughes Tool Company. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Roy. He is survived by his brother, John Scales and family in Florida; wife of 60 plus years, Lois (McDowell) Scales; son, Stephen Scales; daughter-in-law, Karen (Busby) Scales; daughter, Laura (Scales) Wood; son-in-law, Jeffrey Wood; grandchildren, Lindsay, Avalon, Joshua and Jason; other relatives and friends. Garry Michael Scantlin Garry Michael Scantlin of St. James, Missouri was born on August 7, 1948 in Safe, Missouri to Herschel Gene "Tom" and Allene Jane (Brown) Scantlin and passed away Saturday, June 6, 2014 at the age of 66 years. Garry always attended rural country schools until he entered high school in St. James, Missouri. After graduating he attended Linn Tech in Linn, Missouri until March 1967 when he entered the United States Army. Garry served until February 1976, most of this time he spent in Germany working on the Pershing Missile Systems. He than transferred into the United States Army Reserves. His unit was activated in December of 1990 and Garry went to serve in Desert Storm. He retired from the Army Reserves after 23 years of service. He married Betty Ann Seydlitz, on January 21, 1977 and to this union three sons were born. Garry returned to Linn Tech in 1979 for a degree in Auto Mechanics and worked in the field until 1985. He than went to work for Cardetti Furniture for 10 years. In 1995 Garry went to Boys and Girls Town, where he worked in maintenance department. In 1999 he went to the University of Missouri Rolla to work in the maintenance department until 2011. Garry was an avid horseman and loved his mare Stormy. Together they spend many happy hours on the trails in the beautiful Missouri Ozarks. He was also a very active member of the Safe Saddle Club for many years. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Betty of the home; sons, Michael Scantlin of St. James, Missouri, Shad Scantlin and wife Christal of St. James, Missouri and JT Scantlin of Springfield, Missouri; brother, Gene Scantlin and wife Fay of St. James, Missouri; grandson, Viktor Scantlin; other relatives and friends. Visitation was held Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at the St. James Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 10 a.m. in the St. James Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary with Jeff Scantlin officiating. Clifford Peter Smith Clifford Peter Smith of St. James, Missouri was born in Bartlett, Illinois on October 28, 1931 to Clifford Fredrick and Bernice (Peterson) Smith and passed away at the age of 83 years. Clifford enjoyed a full and interesting life. He was a very skilled arpenter and built several homes for his family through the years. He also was able to help his son build his home. He has been in the restaurant business in both Illinois and St James, Missouri. His favorite and most rewarding endeavor came through his love of horses. Clifford was raising and training AQHA horses, one of the best horses he had was a stud by the name of Tulsa Bars Hank, which Clifford took to the big AQHA shows in the 70's. It was in 1979 that Clifford and "Hank" would bring home the "prize" scoring a second place in Reining at the World Show in Oklahoma City, not a small feat by any means, and a very proud Smith family. In his later years he really enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune. It wouldn't matter who was calling if it was 6:30 p.m. he would get you off the phone so he could get back to watching. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Bernice Smith; sons, Terry and Gary Smith; and brothers, Kenny and Richard Smith. He is survived by his children, Bonnie Polan of Streamwood, Illinois, Clay Smith and wife Laura of Gilberts, Illinois, Cheri Silard of Las Vegas, Nevada, Chet Smith and wife Sally of Tucson, Arizona, Kit Smith and wife Elizabeth of Fenton, Missouri and Tress Smith and husband Cam Miller of Reno, Nevada; grandchildren, Jesse, Donnie, Elizabeth, Heather, Cynthia, Katherine, Roxanne, Alex, Marisa, Breanna, Peyton, Felix and Lydia; sister, Betty Noren of Marshfield, Missouri; two great grandchildren other relatives and friends.
