Walter Freeman
Walter Freeman of Cuba was born on August 9, 1904 at Short Bend, Mo. in
Dent County to William Martin Freeman and Laura Butts Freeman, and passed
away on June 12, 2003 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. at the
age of 98 years, 10 months and 3 days.
In his early years he worked in St. Louis as a street car conductor. On
August 10, 1936 he married Velma Hutson in St. Louis, Mo. and to this union
two children were born. He and Velma moved to a farm near Cook Station, Mo.
in 1947. He worked the farm until 1950, then moved back to St. Louis where
he worked as a pipe fitter for Wagner Electric until his retirement.
When Walter retired they moved to their home in Cuba. Even though he said
he was an unsuccessful farmer, he enjoyed gardening and won many awards at
the Crawford County Fair for his entries. He also loved to fish, and work
with his hands. Walter was a musician and could play the guitar, violin,
piano, and harmonica.
Walter was a devout Christian whose church was very important to him. He
was a charter member of the Christian Church in Cuba and served as an
elder.
Walter and Velma enjoyed 53 years of marriage until she passed away in
1989. In 1991 Walter married Norma Baker and she passed away in 2002.
Walter was preceded in death by is parents; wives Velma Hutson Freeman and
Norma Baker Freeman; brothers and sisters, Evan Freeman, Clara Bowers,
Susan Cotner, Pearl Freeman, Bessie Freeman, Roscoe Freeman, Clarence
Freeman, Lee Freeman, Esther Smith, Mildred Freeman, and Rose Freeman; and
son-in-law Russell DuBois.
Those who remain to mourn his passing are his children, Sara E. DuBois of
Branson, Mo., and Walter Freeman and wife Deborah of St. Charles, Mo.;
three grandchildren, Deborah DuBois, Christopher Freeman and wife Tabitha,
and Andrea Freeman; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Freeman, ad Benjamin
Freeman; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends all who will
sadly miss and fondly remember Walter Freeman.
Visitation was on Sunday, June 15, 2003 from 6-8 p.m. at the Hutson Funeral
Home in Cuba, Mo.
Funeral service was on Monday, June 16, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian
Church in Cuba, Mo. with pastor Woodrow Martin officiating.
Burial was in the Meramec Hills Memorial Lawn, Cuba, Mo.
All arrangements were under the direction of Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba.
Memorials may be given to the Cuba Christian Church in memory of Walter
Freeman.
William Thomas (Tom) Rives
William Thomas (Tom) Rives passed away on June 12, 2003 in Scottsdale,
Arizona. Mr. Rives was born on January 2, 1925 in St. Louis, Mo., to
Benjamin Shore and Norma Rose (Dowd) Rives.
Mr. Rives served in the Sea Bees from 1943 to 1946, receiving an honorable
discharge from the U.S. Navy.
He married Margaret Louise Menkhus in 1947. In 1958, the couple and two
daughters relocated to Wilbraham, MA. As a result of Mr. Rives' work in the
automotive industry, he invented and patented the Versa-Tag in 1970, and
moved Versa-Tags, Inc. to Cuba, Mo., in 1989. Mr. Rives sold the growing
company to his daughter, Patricia and her husband Ronald Garden, in 1991.
Mr. and Mrs. Rives moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 2001.
Mr. Rives is survived by his wife, Peg, daughters Margaret Cook and
Patricia Garden, son-in-law Ronald Garden, eleven grandchildren, one great
grandchild, and brothers Roland and Robert Rives.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Ziegenhein Funeral Home, 4830 Lemay
Ferry Road, St. Louis, Mo. Viewing Monday, June 23, 4-8. Funeral services
were held June 24, 10 a.m. with burial at Jefferson Barracks National
Cemetery.
