MO Local Obituaries for the Week of June 18, 2014 Bernice Brewer Bernice Brewer of Cuba, Missouri was born to George and Elsie (Parker) Ash on July 27, 1937 in Huzzah, Missouri and passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014 at the age of 76. Bernice worked many years at the Cuba Shoe Factory, she later worked and retired from Paramount Apparel. She was a member of New Testament Baptist Church in Sullivan, Missouri. She enjoyed going to church, teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, gardening, being outdoors and chickens, ducks and geese. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Elsie Ash; four brothers, Everett, Lloyd, Kenneth and Jerry. She is survived by her husband, Hilmer Brewer of Cuba, Missouri; four children, David King of Cuba, Missouri, Daniel and wife Lisa King of Leasburg, Missouri, Phyllis "Lynn" and husband Bill Fitzgerald of Stanton, Missouri, Bryan King of Cuba, Missouri; two brothers, George and wife Barbara Ash of Sullivan, Missouri, Gary and wife Judy Ash of Bourbon, Missouri; one sister, Patsy and husband Bob Conaway of Steelville, Missouri; three sisters-in-law, Katherine Ash of Cuba, Missouri and Marilyn Maupin of Sullivan, Missouri, Edie Robbins of St. Clair, Missouri; 12 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Visitation was held on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral service at the Mizell Funeral Home in Cuba, Missouri. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at 1 p.m. at the Mizell Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Idleman, officiating. Interment followed at the Crossroads Cemetery, Leasburg, Missouri. Arrangements under the direction of the Mizell Funeral Home in Cuba, Missouri. Gertrude H. Hemme Gertrude H. Hemme of Springfield, Missouri, formerly of St. James, Missouri, was born in St. James, Missouri on September 25, 1919 to Sterling and Carrie (Lorts) Moreland and passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at the age of 94 years. She was united in marriage to Arthur R. Hemme on September 20, 1935 and to this union three children were born. Gertrude attended the Christian Church and was baptized as a teen. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening. She always had a big garden and would lovingly share the harvest of her labor with family, friends, and neighbors and canning the rest. Gertrude was a people person for sure, getting her gift of gab from the Lorts side of the family (they say). She was always ready for a family reunion, just to be able to catch up with what was going on with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sterling and Carrie Moreland; husband Arthur; brother, Sterling Moreland Jr.; sister, Mabel Mortorana. She is survived by her children, Vera Jane Backman and husband Charles of Springfield, Missouri, Arthur Eugene Hemme and wife Charlet of St. James, Missouri, and John Arnold Hemme and wife Jane of St. James, Missouri; step-sisters, Kathleen Rinehart of St. James, Missouri, Dorothy Pallay of Stow, Ohio and Joan Field of Denver, Colordao; step-brother, Jack Crafton of St. James, Missouri; grandchildren, Russell Hemme (Teresa Garr), Jill Milligan (Mike), James Backman (Sue), Debroah Trujillo (Tim), Michael Hemme (Faith), and Kelly Buttermore (Andrew); 16 great grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Virginia Albetta Payne Virginia Albetta Payne, nee Brooks, of Steelville, Missouri was born December 3, 1924 in Salem, Missouri to Elisha F. Brooks and Emma Amelia Snyder Brooks and passed away Thursday, June 12, 2014 at the age of 89 years, 6 months and 9 days. On January 5, 1957 in Union, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Victor D. Payne.Virginia was a member of the Steelville First Baptist Church and the Gleaners Sunday School class for many years. She enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking, canning, quilting, mushroom hunting and 4-wheeling with her son-in-law, Jerry. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elisha and Emma Brooks; her husband, Victor Payne in 1990; one son, Keith Alan Payne; three sisters, Margaret Wick and husband Amuel, Ellen Craft and Mildred Rhinehart and husband Manford; and two brothers-in-law, Luke Bunch and Richard Emms. She is survived by her daughter, Amelia "Amy" Rulo and husband Jerry of Steelville, Missouri; one brother, Paul Brooks and wife Betty of Salem, Missouri; three sisters, Esther Bunch of Georgia, Elizabeth Emms of St. Louis, Missouri and Bertha Malone and husband Charles of Salem, Missouri; five grandchildren, Jeramy and Jennafer Rulo of Steelville, Missouri, Jason and Justin Payne of Milton, Florida and Sara Payne of California; other relatives and friends. Special music of a medley of songs was sung by Bob and Carol Coleman. Other music of "Wind Beneath My Wings" was also played. Committal prayer and interment were in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem, Missouri. Casket bearers were Jerry Rulo, Jeramy Rulo, Robert Brooks, Dion Robinson, Larry Malone and Charles Malone. Potter of O'Fallon, Illinois, formerly of Vichy, Missouri, was born in Columbia, Illinois on March 25, 1921 to Edward and Louisa (Shepman) Regh and passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the age of 93 years. She was united in marriage to Theodore F. Potter on August 10, 1938 and to this union six children were born. After Ted retired they settled into the quiet life of Vichy, Missouri. Sarah took on a very active role in the Vichy and Vienna community. Her main focus was the Vienna Senior Center where she would work six days a week making sure the seniors of the community were fed and had all they needed. Her hobbies included ceramics, quilting, embroidering and volunteering. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Louisa Regh; husband Theodore; brothers, Clarence, Robert and Donald Rehg; sisters, Clara and Delores; grandsons, Todd and Shaun Potter. She is survived by her children, Lois Schwoebel and husband Gene of Belleville, Illinois, Edward "Sonny" Potter of Vichy, Missouri, Richard Potter of Millstadt, Illinois, Debbie Rudy and husband Dave of New Baden, Illinois, Sherri Kendrick of Kingwood, Texas, and Theodore Potter II of Holts Summit, Missouri; brother, Kenneth Regh of Davis, California; sister, Luan Robertson of Smithton, Illinois; grandchildren, Greg Rodewald, Lisa Wegman (Jon), Shannon Potter (Melissa), Kim Lepper (Mark), Paula Potter, Rick Potter, John Potter, Mark Potter, Jodi Barker, Nikki Potter, Laura Rudy, Elizabeth Bethel, Nathan Rudy (Heather), Tiffany Dahl, Kane Kendrick, and Kole Kendrick; 24 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; other relatives and friends.
