MO Local Obituaries for the Week of June 19, 2019 Marvin Leonard Chilton Marvin Leonard Chilton of St. James, Missouri was born in Elvins, Missouri on May 2, 1920 to Alfred Jesse and Effie (Wolfe) Chilton and passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at the age of 99 years. Marvin married Lorraine (Midge) Patrick, on August 8, 1941. It was a hard time for the country during WWII, so Marvin packed up, left his little family and enlisted in the Unites State Navy. He spent the next year, 18 months, proudly serving the country mostly serving in the Philippine Islands. After returning home to his family, Marvin went back to farming, and later worked as a Ranger for the U.S. Forest Service. He really enjoyed getting out in the spring and planning and planting the big beautiful garden. Marvin was always proud of his garden and would always share the bounty of his labors with family, friends and neighbors. He was a member of the St. James Christian Church. In 2010 Marvin was given the honor of going on an Honor Flight to Washington, DC. The honor flight program is a program that transports American veterans to visit the memorials dedicated to themselves and the fellow veterans. It was an especially memorable flight for Marvin, because his granddaughter Terry (Plank) Mears, who had just retired from the United States Navy was able to go on the flight with him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Effie Chilton; his wife, Midge in 2003; daughter, Mary Etta Blackburn and husband Charles; five brothers and two sisters; grandchildren, Tina Chilton, and Derek Chilton; and nephew Eddie Patrick. Michael Lee Click Michael Lee Click of Cuba, Missouri was born Wednesday, September 7, 1960 at St. Louis, Missouri to Bobby and Janet (nee Pratt) Click and passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at the age of 58 years. Mike started his working career right out of high school. He worked with plumbers and electricians, so he could learn a trade. He found out that he was an excellent carpenter. He remodeled bathrooms, kitchens and even did roofing jobs. He worked at Lewis Machine until he had his first heart attack. Mike enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding his Harley and he was always a comedian. He was known by many as a "Chef." His steaks, ribs and fish fries were the best in the country. He was a member of the Leasburg Revitalization Organization and the "Wild Hogs." Mike was fun loving, giving and he had a heart of gold. He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Click; aunts, uncles, grandparents and other family and friends. Cowling of Cuba, Missouri was born Monday, September 5, 1938 at Washington, Missouri to Irvin B. and Margaret (nee Perkins) Cowling and passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at the age of 80 years. John served in the United States Navy from August 1, 1956 until September 4, 1959. He was transferred to the United States Naval Reserve until July 31, 1962. On November 19, 1960 John married Loretta L. Rutz at Holy Cross Catholic Church. He retired as an engineer for the telephone company after forty plus years of dedicated service. During his career he worked for ConTel, GTE and Verizon. After retiring they moved back to Crawford County and enjoyed their years at the farm. From 1993 to 1996 John and Loretta traveled and stayed in their fifth-wheel camper. They wintered in Florida from 1995 to 2007. You could find them on ATV trips around the county from 2006 until 2014. For the last many years, John has affectionately been known as "Uncle Buzzard." If you had ever seen him stretch out his arms, you would know why he got that nickname. He was also known for his story telling abilities. His stories were very long because he made them up as he went. He enjoyed deer season, he didn't want to kill a deer, he just wanted to hang out with the guys. One of hisfavorite past times was playing golf. Again, he got to hang out with the guys and enjoy the day. Uncle Buzzard was the truest role model for guys on "how to treat your wife." After 58 and half years of marriage, John said Loretta was as beautiful today as the day he married her. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Margaret Cowling; and two brothers, Robert Cowling and William Cowling. On September 12, 1964 he married Carolyn Vaughn. Jerry served honorably in the Army National Guard from 1960-1968. He enjoyed building birdhouses, working in his yard and hunting. Ellis William Evans Ellis William Evans of Steelville, Missouri was born at Dillard, Missouri on November 10, 1921 to Gerome Franklin and Katherine Obermark Evans and passed away Sunday, June 9, 2019 at the age of 97 years, 6 months and 30 days. On January 11, 1947 in Potosi, Missouri he married Ardell Worley. Ellis served honorably from 1942 to 1945 in the U.S. Army in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe Campaigns receiving a Purple Heart. He worked in St. Louis, Missouri for several years in construction, eventually moving back to the Crawford County area to start a business of having over 40,000 laying hens. He attended Shoal Creek Church years ago. Ellis enjoyed repairing old clocks from the area and from other countries. He also was a master craftsman working on violins and guitars and could spend many hours fishing for trout. Goertz of Cook Station, Missouri was born on Wednesday, January 14, 1925 in Walton, Kansas to Henry F. and Martha Schmidt Goertz and passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at the age of 94 years, 4 months and 22 days. Richard married Lela Rose Hiebert on April 7, 1953 in Goessel, Kansas. He enjoyed farming in Kansas. For many years, Richard and Lela and their children attended and were members of Garden Church, Hesston, Kansas. Richard was a member of the Gideons, but after a while, felt that there was more he could be doing. The Lord brought the needs overseas to his and Lela's attention. Garden Church, the body of believers that was their home, sent them to the Philippines and stood with them in the work through prayer and finances. They spent 12 years in the Philippines as support missionaries with Ethnos 360 (formerly New Tribes Mission). When Richard retired, he couldn't resist planting a garden every year. He gave of his funds to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. When he and Lela moved to Whispering Winds Bible Camp, Cook Station, Missouri, they continued to be very interested in how many children trusted Christ during the weeks of camp. She loved baking, especially at Christmas time. She took pride in decorating her home and keeping it in pristine condition. She was always singing hymns as she went about her days. Daniel Ward Ness Daniel Ward Ness of Dixon, Missouri was born on July 22, 1949 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Melvin and Joan (Harman) Ness and passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at the age of 69 years. Daniel was a 1967 graduate of Kings City High School in Kings City, Missouri. After graduating high school, he proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 1989 after serving his country for 21 years. After retiring from the military, he was an over the road truck driver for many years. On September 3, 1993 he married Bobbie Duckworth in Grand Prairie, Texas. Daniel was a Green Bay Packers fan and loved to stay busy doing various projects. He was preceded in death by his dad, Melvin Ness; stepdad, Lee Harman; and one brother, David Ness. Lindell Scott Peterson Lindell Scott Peterson of Gerald, Missouri was born Friday, July 29, 1955 at St. Louis, Missouri to Johnnie and Martha L. (nee Frick) Peterson and passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at the age of 63 years. Scott, as he was known by, retired in 2000, after nearly 30 years of working as a boiler maker for refineries. He worked in refineries all over the United States and in many different countries. After retirement Scott enjoyed watching and listening to the baseball game. He enjoyed fishing and model cars. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Martha Peterson; and two brothers, Donnie and John Peterson. Mary Joanne Rodgers Mary Joanne Rodgers of Sullivan, Missouri was born June 4, 1931 in Cuba, Missouri to Russell and Helen Guion (Myers) and passed away Friday, June 7, 2019 at the age of 88 years. She grew up and attended school in various places in Missouri. Joanne graduated from Sullivan High School in 1949 and got married to Jimmie Dace later that year. They lived in Sullivan, Missouri Joanne worked at Ramsey Corporation then eventually the Bank of Sullivan. She also was a member of the Sullivan Hospital Auxiliary. On August 7, 1993, Joanne married Don Rodgers. Joanne spent her free time loving on her dogs, fishing, crocheting, playing bingo and pinochle and line dancing. After Don and Joanne's retirement in 1995, together they enjoyed many years of travelling. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jimmie Dace; and her parents, Russell and Helen Guion.
