MO Local Obituaries for the Week updated June 30, 2006 Naomi Florence (Carl) Gruschka Naomi Florence (Carl) Gruschka, age 83 of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away at home on June 20, 2006, with her family by her side. She was born in Goodwater, Missouri, January 28, 1923 to Ray and Grace (Laramore) Carl. Baptized at an early age, Naomi became a member of Emmaus Baptist Church in Courtois, Missouri, where she also taught Sunday school for many years. For the last 43 years, she regularly attended Grace Baptist Church in Kansas City North. Naomi graduated from Belgrade High School, Flat River Community College and Missouri State University. She taught school in Iron County and Washington County, Missouri, in the same schools from which she had received her elementary and high school education. She touched the lives of many children, not only during her 19 year teaching career, but also during the summers when she worked at Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children in St Louis, which she considered such a rewarding experience. In 1961, she married Heinz Gruschka in St Louis and they soon moved to Kansas City, forever calling it home. Naomi chose not to work outside the home after her daughter, Jane, was born, however, her love of children led her to be a child care provider for 28 years. The last two children to experience her love and care (and her infamous pancakes) were her own grandchildren who were her pride and joy. She is survived by her husband, Heinz; daughter, Jane Gruschka; and grandchildren, Amy and Max Gruschka, all of Kansas City, Missouri; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Liselotte and William Drummey of Windham, Maine, Hans and Gisela Gruschka of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Peter and Edda Gruschka of Dauchingen, Germany; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Blanche (Carl) Pyatt and Geraldine Carl; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Reldon and Berniece (Payne) Carl, Aaron and Etta (Denney) Carl, and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Annelise and Sydney Ferguson. Naomi will be remembered as a most courageous and loving woman, whose boundless care and compassion for others touched so many lives and continued even throughout her own ill health. She will be missed more than words can say, but will live forever in the hearts of all who knew her. Visitation was Friday, 6-8 p.m. at DW Newcomer's Sons White Chapel, Gladstone Missouri. Funeral service on Saturday, 10 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church, Kansas City Missouri, followed by interment at White Chapel Memorial Gardens. All arrangements under Newcomer's White Chapel. Marcus Laverne Record Marcus Laverne Record of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at his home on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at the age 86 years. Vern, as he was known by his family and friends, was born August 4, 1919 at Anthony's Mill, Missouri to the late Marcus L. and Hattie Ann (Bishop) Record. He lived his early years in and around the Bourbon area and in the mid-1930's went west to Oregon and California where he worked with the CC Camps. On January 10, 1943 he was married to Dorothy Cross at Union, Missouri and to his union four children were born. He had been employed at various companies around Sullivan that included the old East End Grocery Store and Keith Cline's Variety Store. He was also a volunteer fireman for the Sullivan Volunteer Fire Department. He later was employed at the former Ramsey Corporation for seven years and later became a maintenance mechanic at McDonald-Douglas in St. Louis. He retired from there after 22 years of service. In 1958 he and his family moved to St. Ann, Missouri to be closer to his work. During this time he was a volunteer fireman with the Overland Fire Department. In 1977, two years shy of his retirement, he returned to the Sullivan area. Vern became active again as a volunteer fireman and later trained and became a member of the Sullivan Auxiliary Police Department. He was also a Past Noble Grand of Sullivan Oddfellows Lodge No. 156 and member of Temple Baptist Church of Sullivan. After the death of his wife in 2001, he was married on June 29, 2002 to Gilberta Weiskopf who survives. Surviving along with his wife is one son, Floyd Record and wife Judith of Sullivan, Missouri; three daughters, Shirley Weber and husband Joe of Cuba, Missouri, Peggy Strong and husband Gary of Jefferson City, Missouri and Theresa Hoffmeister and husband Dave of St. Peters, Missouri; three step daughters, Kathy Loungo and husband Nick of the state of Florida, Karen Blankenship and husband Dennis of the state of Georgia and Sharon Danahy of Fenton, Missouri; one sister-in-law, Jewel Bartell of Sullivan, Missouri. Nine grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, six step grandchildren and one step great grandchild; other relatives and many friends. Along with those previously mentioned, Laverne was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Edward Record, who were both killed during World War II; a sister, Edith Gilliam and an infant sister Eleanor Doris Record. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2006 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri with Pastors Floyd Starks and Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in the Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri.
