Herman Abney
Herman Abney was born Sunday, November 3, 1918, at Good Water, Mo., a son of the
late Leslie Porter Abney and Letha Mae Abney (nee Parks).
He entered eternal rest Tuesday, July 2, 2003 at the Delmar Gardens South, St.
Louis, Mo., at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 29 days.
On March 19, 1941, Herman was united in marriage to Hilda Mae Crocker. One
daughter, Wanda, and two sons, Charles and Gary, were born to this union. They
have enjoyed over 62 years together.
On April 29, 1944 Herman was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving with the 110th
Infantry. He saw combat duty in the Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland
battle and campaigns. He was awarded three Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal
for these campaigns. He was wounded in France February 1, 1945 and was awarded a
Purple Heart for these injuries. He was honorably discharged December 28, 1945.
After his military service Herman was employed by Prairie Farm Dairies, where he
worked for 37 years.
In addition to his parents Herman was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Wayne
Ballance; six sisters, Norma Jean Skaggs, Verda and husband Thurman Hawthorne,
Lemon Abney, Bertha and husband Leonard Thornton, Shirley and husband Robert
Herr, Velma and husband Paul Byrd; first brother expired as an infant;
brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Junies Engelhardt, Roy Frasier, George
Fisher, Alpha and Oren Henderson, Lola and Al Upton, Goldie Marie Crocker,
Harold and Eleanor Crocker, Eugene Crocker, Sam Crocker, Jerry and Daphine
Crocker and Robert Crocker.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife Hilda Mae Abney
of St. Louis, Mo.; one daughter Wanda Ballance of St. Louis, Mo.; two sons,
Charles Abney and wife Judith of Festus, Mo. and Gary Abney of Jacksonville,
Florida; two brothers, Arnold Abney and wife Betty of Steelville, Mo., Arthur
Abney and wife Shirley of St. Charles, Mo.; two sisters, Martha Abney of Salem,
Mo. and Verniece Engelhardt of Steelville, Mo.
Eight grandchildren, three step grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, six
step great grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Radis Skaggs of
Viburnum, Mo., Inis Frasier of Belleview, Mo., Dolcie Fisher of Jacksonville,
Florida, Jeannie Crocker of Festus, Mo., and Jessie Crocker of Potosi, Mo.;
nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Herman Abney lay in state 5-8:30 p.m. Friday, July 4, 2003, at the Britton
Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held 11 a.m.
Saturday, July 5, 2003, in the Britton Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Chandler
officiating. Terry Hogan provided musical selections.
Committal prayers and interment were in Sam Crocker Cemetery, Goodland, Mo.
Serving as pallbearers were Charles Abney, Mark Barton, David Crocker, Kraig
Langeneckert, Donald Thornton, and Kenneth Thornton.
Full military honors were provided for graveside services. Arrangements were
under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo.
Lawrence Frank Conaway
Lawrence Frank Conaway was born Sunday, December 8, 1918, at Cherryville, Mo., a
son of the late Irvin Jesse Conaway and Lena Hazel (nee Martin) Conaway.
He departed this life at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri,
Sunday, June 29, 2003, at the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 21 days.
Lawrence was united in marriage to Mildred (nee Bolling) on September 5, 1942 by
a Justice of the Peace in St. Louis, Missouri. They have made Cherryville,
Missouri their home since 1955. They enjoyed over 60 years together.
Lawrence was a piston ring manufacturing machine operator for a number of years.
He was baptized August 28, 1983, at Lookout Assembly of God Church, Viburnum,
Missouri. At Cherryville Church of God, he served as Sunday School
Superintendent for eight years. He was an honest and hardworking man whose
favorite times were spent with his wife and family.
In addition to his parents, two brothers, Noel Conaway and Luther Conaway, and
four brothers-in-law, Johnny Bolling, Bill Bolling, Bob Bolling, and Clyde
Green, preceded her in death.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife Mildred Conaway
of the home; two sons, Richard Conaway and wife Beverly of Steelville, Mo.; and
Rick Conaway and wife Phyllis of Cherryville, Mo.; two brothers, Irvin Conaway,
Jr., and wife Mary of Cherryville, Mo. and Paul Conaway and wife Mildred of
Cuba, Mo.; two sisters, Geneva Green of Cherryville, Mo. and Loraine Brown and
husband Leo of Belle, Mo.; three grandsons, Rod Conaway and wife Fern of
Steelville, Mo., Gary Ulsh, Jr. of Bourbon, Mo. and Josh Joly of Steelville,
Mo.; two great grandchildren, Brittany Conaway and Daulton Conaway of
Steelville, Mo.
Also remaining are brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Velma Conaway of
Cherryville, Mo., Emilie Conaway of Dupo, Illinois, Joe and Wilma Baker of
Davisville, Mo., Gene and Bonnie Bolling of Bolivar, Mo., Pat and Janet Bolling
of Sullivan, Mo., and Charlene and Sonny Clayton of Summersfield, Illinois;
nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Lawrence Frank Conaway lay in state Tuesday, July 1, 2003, 2-8 p.m. at the
Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held
Wednesday, July 2, 2 p.m. at Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Rev.
H. E. Thrasher officiating and Rev. Richard Martin assisting. Bob and Carol
Coleman provided musical selections accompanied by pianist Shirley Brown.
Committal prayers and interment were in First Baptist Church Cemetery,
Cherryville, Mo. Serving as pallbearers were Tim Brown, Jason Conaway, Kenny
Conaway, Rodney Conaway, Josh Joly, Lindell Green, John Hanneken, and Gary Ulsh,
Jr.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home, Steelville,
Mo.
Shirley Joste Earls
Shirley Joste Earls passed away June 30, 2003 at St. Bernard Hospital in
Jonesboro, Arkansas. Shirley lived 10 days after being diagnosed with cancer of
the lungs.
Shirley was born in 1931 in Cuba, Mo. to Blaine and Olla Joste and grew up in
Cuba. Several years ago she moved to Marmaduke, Arkansas to be near her son,
Tony Earls.
Shirley is survived by son, Tony and family, a brother James Joste, nieces,
nephews, cousins and will be missed by many friends.
She was baptized in the Christian Church at Marmaduke, Arkansas. A sunset
graveside service was held on Thursday, July 3 at Marmaduke, Arkansas.
Tony Lee McCutcheon
Tony Lee McCutcheon, 75, of Marquand died June 19, 2003 at St. Francis Medical
Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born July 31, 1927 in Patton, a son of Herbert and Reva (Kaiser)
McCutcheon.
On April 15, 1949, at Union Light Church in Marquand Mr. McCutcheon was married
to Louella Mills, who preceded him in death in 1995. One sister, Anna Lou Sikes,
preceded him in death also.
Surviving Mr. McCutcheon are five sons, Perry McCutcheon and David McCutcheon,
both of Marquand, Marvin McCutcheon of Farmington, John McCutcheon of Patton and
Herbert McCutcheon of Marble Hill; and one sister, Ruby Vandergriff of
Steelville.
He had 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Mr. McCutcheon worked at Brown Shoe for many years and as a sander at the handle
factory in Jackson.
He was a member of Union Light Church in Marquand.
Pallbearers were Paul Ray Matthews, David, Daniel and Dennis Mills, Jess Sikes,
and Kenneth Statler.
Services were held June 22, 2003, at Union Light Church with Reverend Raymond
Michael and Brother Randy Poole officiating. Interment was at Union Light
Cemetery. Services were handled by the Wilson Funeral Home.
