Richard Lewis Brooks
Richard Lewis Brooks was born Saturday, December 20, 1930, at Zanesville,
Ohio, a son of the late Fred O. Brooks and Evelyn Brooks nee Adams.
He departed this life Saturday, August 9, 2003, at his home in Steelville,
Missouri, at the age of 72 years, 7 months and 19 days.
On March 26, 1972, at the Unity Church of the Desert, Las Vegas, Nevada,
Richard was united in marriage to Marie Mable Chrostowski, daughter of the
late Julius James DeGonia and Mary Susan (Yates) DeGonia. They enjoyed over
31 years together, making Steelville their home the last 18 years. Marie
preceded Richard in death, one week earlier, August 2, 2003.
Richard served his country in the United States Navy. His date of entry was
November 1947, at San Diego, California. He retired after 20 years of service.
During this time he served in Korea, received the Navy Unity Commendation
Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal and a Bronze Star. His last duty was Commander of
Service Squadron 7, at the Naval Air Station, Alameda, California.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Richard was preceded in death by two
brothers, Fred Brooks, Jr. and Joseph Brooks and three sisters, Jane Molloy,
Ann Penrod and Ruth Kissick and a number of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Amont those who remain to mourn his passing are his stepson, Ray Franklin Wright
and wife Krystal of Zanesville, Ohio; one step-grandson, Tom Wright and wife
Melinda of Steelville, Missouri; a sister, Mary K. Gill and husband Phillip, of
Zanesville, Ohio; sister-in-law, Allean Hanks of Steelville, Missouri; nieces,
nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Richard Lewis Brooks lay in state 5-8 p.m. Sunday, August 10, 2003, at the
Britton Bros. Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held 11
a.m. Monday, August 11, 2003 in the Britton Chapel with Rev. Gene Whitaker
officiating. Judy and Jordan Whitaker and Mildred Campbell provided musical
selections.
Committal prayers and interment were in Steelville Cemetery, Steelville,
Missouri. Military honors were graveside with the presentation of the flag and
playing of taps.
Serving as pallbearers were Jim Bobst, Steve Eads, Philip Gill, Tom Tudo and
Gene Whitaker. Honorary pallbearer was R. Franklin Wright. Arrangements were
under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Noah E. Brown
Noah E. Brown of Sullivan, Mo. passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2003
at the age of 77 years. Mr. Brown was born on May 15, 1926 at Cherryville,
Mo. to Billy and Della Pyatt Brown. He was the second child of a family of
15 children. Noah moved to St. Louis as a teenager where he met and later
married Agnes Collier on May 27, 1945. Their union was lovingly blessed for
58 years. He honorably served his country with the U.S. Army and had attained
the rank of Private First Class. Noah worked in the automotive parts industry
and was employed with the same company for 41 years. He was a member of the
Assembly of God for 58 years and served as a Deacon for nearly 35 years.
He was a faithful member of First Assembly of God in Sullivan.
He is survived by his wife Agnes of the family home, one son Stanley Brown
and wife Marilyn of St. Charles, Mo., two daughters, Sharon Dorf of Cuba, Mo.
and Janet Larrison and husband Joey of Sullivan; six grandchildren, Shelly
Davis and husband Robert, Jeanette Weppner and husband Charlie, Tona Lewis
and husband Rodney, all of Bourbon, Mo., Dana Harris and husband Dwight of
Jacksonville, North Carolina, Jennifer and David Brown of St. Charles, Mo.,
six great grandchildren-the sunshine in his last days-Bobby, Luke, Becca,
Lesley, Abby and Austin, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents,
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy and a sister, Bernice.
Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m., on Friday, August 15, 2003, from the
Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Gary Oglesby officiating. Interment
was in Davisville Cemetery, Davisville, Mo. In lieu of flowers memorials to
First Assembly of God Children's Church are preferred.
Jerome "Jerry" Jennings Cunningham, Jr.
Jerome "Jerry" Jennings Cunnigham Jr., of Cuba, Mo., was born April 28, 1929,
in St. Louis, Mo., to the union of Jerome Jennings Cunningham Sr. and Lorraine
Drozda Cunningham and passed away in St. Louis, Mo., on May 18, 2003, at the
age of 74 years and 20 days. On May 8, 1977, Jerry was united in marriage to
Patricia J. Fruehling at Cuba, Mo. They enjoyed 26 years of marriage.
Jerry was preceded in death by his mother, Lorraine Drozda. Those who survive
to mourn his passing from this life are his devoted wife, Patricia J. Cunningham;
father Jerome J. Cunningham Sr. and wife Virginia (Mom); brothers and sisters
Arleen Luedde, Linda Woessner and husband Michael, Wayne Cunningham and wife
Deanna, Darrell Cunningham and wife Janice, Mary Black and husband Steve and
Robert Cunningham and wife Jane; nieces and nephews Elizabeth A. Devitt, Megan
J. Leake, Brandon Jennings Cunningham, Lance Jennings Cunningham, Todd Elliot
Cunningham, Trenton Goudeau, Jennifer Cunningham, Kirsten Brooks, Cody
Cunningham, Matthew and Lindsey Woessner, Seth Jennings Black, Samuel Jacob
Black; other relatives and many friends
Jerry was a well-known baseball scout and player. He has been enshrined into
the Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame and the Baseball Scouting Hall of Fame. As
an amateur, Jerry has a .466 lifetime batting average.
Jerry played professional baseball on many levels in the minor leagues.
He was selected to play in the minor league all-star game twice and led his
teams in hitting twice and fielding three times. He was playing AAA ball
before a serious back injury shortened his career.
Jerry began scouting for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1957. He also scouted for
Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers before finally working for the
Major League Scouting Bureau. Some of the more well-known players signed by
Jerry include Rick Sutcliffe, Mike Tennant, Shane Rawley, Tom Henke,
Dave Stieb and Gary Gaetti. Jerry was a devoted husband, loving son, brother,
uncle and good friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed.
Edith Dora Doyen
Edith Dora Doyen nee Hemker was born on October 15, 1913 at Maupin, Missouri
to the union of Charles Hemker and Love Maupin Hemker and passed away in
Denver, Colorado on August 13, 2003 at the age of 89 years, 9 months and 28
days. On September 11, 1941 Edith was united in marriage to Paul E. Doyen.
Two sons, Michael and Patrick, and one daughter, Mary Ann, were born to this
union. Paul preceded Edith in death on April 9, 1987.
Edith was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Hallie Hemker.
Edith and Paul moved to Cuba in 1943 and she made her home in Cuba until moving
to Denver, Colorado in 1997 to be near her daughter, Mary Ann.
During her 54 years in Cuba, Edith worked in the family business, sold real
estate and managed a hotel in addition to her participating in many civic and
charitable organizations.
Edith was a member of Holy Cross Church of Cuba, Mo. up until the time she moved
to Denver.
Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her loving daughter,
Mary Ann Doyen of Denver, Colorado; two sons, Michael Doyen and wife Christel
of Rolla, Mo. and Patrick Doyen and wife Judith of Jefferson City, Mo.; six
grandchildren; four great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Edith was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother,
good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed.
Edith Dora Doyen was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. on
Sunday, August 17, 2003 where a prayer service was held at 7 p.m. with Earl
Horsefield officiating. Funeral Mass was held on Monday, August 18, 2003 at 11
a.m. at Holy Cross Church of Cuba, Mo. with Father James Finder officiating.
Interment was in the Holy Cross Cemetery, of Cuba, Mo. All arrangements were
under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo.
David William Gillam
David William Gillam of Davisville, Missouri was born March 12, 1982 in
Potosi, Missouri to David and Tammy Gillam and passed away August 10, 2003
at St. John's Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri, the result of an
automobile accident, at the age of 21 years, 4 months and 29 days.
David graduated from Viburnum High School in 2000. He worked at
Mid-Missouri Truss in Cuba, Missouri. He enjoyed hunting, fishing,
camping, collecting arrowheads and other Indian artifacts. He was
accomplished in the Tai Chi Martial Arts.
David was preceeded in death by his grandfather Allen Bergner, great
grandparents John Doss and Clone and Clara (Keffer) Gillam, Harry and
Ruby (Evans) Brooks. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his loving
parents David and Tammy Gillam of Davisville, Missouri; grandparents
Hazel and Vic Gargus of St. James, Missouri, Purn and Deloris Gillam of
Davisville, Missouri; and great grandmother Melba Doss of Berryman,
Missouri. One brother Alan Gillam of Davisville, Missouri; one sister
Racheal Gilliam of Davisville, Missouri; special niece Abagail "Baby Girl"
Gillam; other relatives and many friends all who will sadly miss and
fondly remember David William Gillam.
Visitation was held from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at the
Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held at
11 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2003 at the Hutson Funeral Chapel in
Steelville, Missouri, with Rev. Delmar B. Hutson officiating. Musical
selections were "Don't want to miss a thing" by Aerosmith; "The Dance"
by Garth Brooks; "I will remember you" by Sarah McLachlan; and "One More Day"
by Diamond Rio. Pallbearers were Danny Bobbitt, Chris Held, Brock Snyder,
Colt Farris, Kyle Selle, Robbie Richter and Ross Richter.
Burial was in the Davisville Cemetery, Davisville, Missouri.
All arrangments under the direction of the Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville,
Missouri.
Alma Gene Mullen
Alma Gene Mullen nee Laney of Cuba, Missouri was born on Tuesday, July 15,
1924 in Wesco, Missouri, to Winfield Noel Laney and Daisy DuLaney Laney.
She passed away at her home on Saturday, August 9, 2003, at the age of
79 years and 25 days. Alma was married to Lawrence Edward Mullen at a
Baptist ministers home in Cuba, Missouri on June 28, 1942, and to this
union one daughter and three sons were born. Alma was very active in the
Army community service in Ft. Hood, Texas when Lawrence was stationed there.
She was also active in helping with the Scouts organization. After moving
to Cuba in 1975, she was involved in the Cuba Arts Council. Her hobbies
were oil painting, creating stained glass, quilt making, crocheting,
golfing, playing bridge, and working crossword puzzles. Alma Gene
was a homemaker, loving wife and mother who will be sadly missed by her
family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Noel Laney, and
Varley Laney; and sister Elba Lee Lamar.
Those who remain to mourn her passing are her dear husband Col.
Lawrence Edward Mullen, U.S. Army (retired); daughter Terry Norris and
husband Robert of Ballwin, Missouri; sons John Mullen of Washington, D.C.,
Larry Mullen of Iberia, Missouri, and Robert Mullen and wife Bonnie of
Columbia, Missouri; one brother Larry Laney of Steelville, Missouri;
Sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws Delores Jones and husband Bill of
Maryland Heights, Missouri, Wayne Mullen and wife Joy of Woodbury,
Tennessee, Donald Mullen and wife Jean of Cuba, Missouri, Clinton
Mullen and wife Wilma of Rolla, Missouri.
Six grandchildren Patricia Clariday and husband Ken, Jennifer Norris,
all of Ballwin, Missouri, Tim Mullen, Tony Mullen and wife Jennifer,
all of Billings, Montana, Edward V. Mullen and friend Deb Evans of
Springfield, Missouri, Jason Mullen and wife Tara of Knoxville,
Tennessee; six great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other
relatives and many friends.Visitation was Wednesday, August 13, 2003
from 7-9 p.m. at Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Thursday, August 14, 2003 at the Hutson
Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri with Rev. Cardis Bryan officiating.
Burial was in Lick Creek Cemetery, Leasburg, Missouri with pallbearers
Edward Mullen, Tony Mullen, Tim Mullen, Bobby Mullen, Zach Hoener, and
Ken Clariday. All arrangements under the direction of Hutson Funeral Home,
Cuba, Missouri.
Patricia L. Summers
Patricia L. Summers nee Baugher was born August 20, 1926, at Humansville,
Missouri, and passed away on January 25, 2003, at the age of 76.
Educated in Missouri schools, she was a graduate of Southwest Missouri
State University, Springfield. She married Marvin Summers of Potosi, and
after his graduate work was completed, the couple made their home in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. From 1955 to 1960, Patricia taught at the old
Downer Seminary, a private elementary school in Milwaukee. She is
survived by her husband, Marvin, one son Gregory and wife Ellen of
Indianapolis, Indiana., grandchildren Allison and Duncan, a brother-in-law
Dale Summers of Cuba, nine nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James T. and Mayme Baugher of
Springfield, and a brother, Thomas, of Louisville.
Memorial services were held on February 2 at the First Unitarian Church
of Milwaukee and a private memorial service on June 14 at the Britton
Funeral Home in Cuba with interment in Meramec Hills Cemetery, Cuba.
"Fred" Fredrick Sylvester Stroupe
Fredrick Sylvester Stroupe of Steelville, Missouri was born Friday,
March 26, 1954 to the late Harry Herskel Stroupe and Maude Ellen Douglas
Stroupe and passed away Friday, August 8, 2003 at the Barnes-Jewish
Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 49 years, 4 months and
13 days.Fred attended school in St. Louis, Missouri through the tenth
grade. He worked at Brown Shoe Company in Steelville, Missouri for a
number of years and later at Industrial Wire, until his health failed.
He was a member of the Teamsters Local 688. He enjoyed hunting and
fishing and being outdoors. He loved his family and enjoyed visiting
with his brothers and sisters and their families.Fred was preceded in
death by his parents, one brother Joseph Stroupe, and one brother-in-law
Richard Holmes. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his brothers
and sisters Raymond Stroupe and wife Mary of Barnhart, Missouri, Harold
James Stroupe of Steelville, Missouri, Michael Stroupe of St. Louis,
Missouri, Kenneth Stroupe of Steelville, Missouri, Debra Holmes of Cuba,
Missouri, Linda Heflin and husband Richard of Cuba, Missouri, Mary Stroupe
and husband Joseph Storey of Steelville, Missouri. Three step children,
grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends all who will
sadly miss and fondly remember Fredrick Sylvester Stroupe. Visitation
was held 6-9 p.m. Monday, August 11, 2003 at the Hutson Funeral Home in
Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday,
August 12, 2003 at the Hutson Funeral Chapel in Steelville, Missouri
with Rev. Delmar B. Hutson officiating. Musical selections were
"Only God Knows Why" by Kid Rock and "Old Rugged Cross."
Pallbearers were Sam Putnam, Joseph Storey, Waylon Heflin,
Shane Acosta, James Derleth and Dick Heflin. Burial was in the Liberty
Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri. All arrangments under the direction
of the Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Richard J. Turnbough
Richard J. Turnbough, was born October 30, 1943 and departed this life
on Saturday, August 2, 2003 at the age of 59 years, 10 months and three
days. He is survived by his wife LaDonna Turnbough, nee Belmar, of Arnold,
Missouri. He was the loving father of Michelle Poole and husband Michael,
and a dear grandfather of Kevin, Kelli and Kyle Poole. Richard was the
beloved son of Lillian Huff and the late Richard Turnbough. He will be
sadly missed by his brother in law, uncle, aunts, nephew, cousins, and
many friends. Visitation was held Tuesday, August 5, 2003, from 3-9 p.m.
at the Kutis South County Chapel on Lemay Ferry Road. Funeral services
were held at the Church of Nazarene, in Arnold on Wednesday,
August 6, 2003 at 1 p.m. with interment in the Shepherd Hills Cemetery.
