MO Local Obituaries for the Week of August 26, 2020 Ava Gay Britton Ava Gay (nee Smith) Britton was born on December 7, 1929 two miles north of Caledonia, Missouri to Hunter Isaac Smith and Jeannette (nee Rutledge) Smith and passed away August 15, 2020 at the age of 90 years. She was named for her grandmother Ava Elizabeth (nee Sutton) Rutledge and aunt Gay (nee Smith) Harrison. Ava graduated from Caledonia High School in May 1947 and began teaching elementary school in September 1947. She taught her first year in the Potosi School District, a one room school, at Pond Creek, Bonne Terre, Missouri. Ava taught the first three grades for three years, then moved to Mineral Point second grade for two years. This began her teaching career of over 30 years. On August 5, 1948 she married John Thurman Britton at Piggott, Arkansas. John was teaching at Cadet, Missouri and they made their first home at Pond Creek, Missouri. They continued teaching until John enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, during the Korean Conflict. After basic training, John was assigned to Kessler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi, where Ava joined him. After John's service, he went to work for ITT Gilfillan and worked for them twenty years taking Ava and their family many directions. Ava continued her work on a degree in Elementary Education. She taught in the Potosi, Missouri, R-3 school district, Avery School; Omaha, Nebraska; New Baltimore, Michigan; Vilonia, Arkansas; Memphis, Tennessee; Lindsay Air Base, Wiesbaden, Germany; Orlando, Florida; Van Nuys, California; and her last nine years were back in Missouri at Crawford County R-2 Elementary in Cuba, Missouri. She received her Associate Degree from Flat River Jr. College, Flat River, Missouri, while John was in Korea. She attended eight different colleges to obtain and Elementary Education degree and a Master's degree in Special Education, both from the University of Arkansas, Conway, Arkansas in 1966 while teaching and raising their two daughters. Ava taught school for over 30 years and retired in 1983 to join John in the funeral home at Steelville, Missouri where they worked together until December 2005, 23 years, and they also spent 14 more years together helping the family at Country Kitchen in Cuba, Missouri. As an infant, Ava's parents had her christened and dedicated to the Lord. At 10 years old, she made a profession of faith, was sprinkled and became a member of a church. But when she began dating the son of a Baptist minister, she realized that she was lost. On May 19, 1946 on her knees at the altar, Ava accepted Christ and made a commitment to follow Him. Ava was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Steelville, Missouri for many years. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Missouri, Eastern Star, the Daughters of the American Revolution along with the Steelville Chamber of Commerce. Ava was also very involved in the Meramec Music Theatre in Steelville, Missouri, alongside her husband John. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hunter Isaac Smith and Jeannette Smith; husband, John Britton; brother, Jim (Verla) Smith; parents-in-law, Rev. John and Allie May Britton; brother-in-law, Alfred (Barbara) Britton; sisters-in-law, Marie (Rev. Harry) Darst, Delorce (Rev. Freeman) Gibson, Beulah (Charles) Akers and Opal (Joe) Wilkerson. Bernard Dillon Bernard Dillon of Bourbon, Missouri, formerly of St James, Missouri, was born February 20, 1953 to Lloyd Arthur and Lillian Winfred Kean Dillon and passed away July 30, 2020 at the age of 67 years. He was a truck driver most of his life, working for the family clay mining business and later owning his own trucks. He had been living in Bourbon, Missouri and worked at Lowes in Sullivan, Missouri before failing health. He served in the United States Air Force in the 305 Transportation Squadron and was honorable discharged at Grissom Air Force Base in Peru, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Lillian Dillon; and two brothers, Walter and Gary Dillon. Wilma Mary Gleason Wilma Mary (Beers) Gleason born March 15, 1940 in, Goodwater, Missouri to Lloyd and Beulah (Gilliam) Beers and passed away on August 14, 2020 at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 29 days. While she grew up in Sullivan, Missouri, she had been a resident of Englewood, Colorado for more than 60 years. She attended many of the Pentecostal Churches in the area over the years. She had given her life to Christ as a teenager in a small church in Sullivan, Missouri. She had a great love and skill for traditional hand crafts from quilting, crocheting and embroidery to painting on both canvas and ornaments. Additionally she took great pride and joy in her garden and flowers. She was also a self-taught musician playing the guitar, accordion, organ and piano. Kimberly was raised in Granite City, Illinois. She moved with her family to House Springs, Missouri when she was a freshman. She graduated from Northwest High School in House Springs, Missouri in 1982. She married and raised three children. She loved to cook. She moved to Cuba, Missouri in 1999 and later met Mark Anthony Hendrix, whom she married on July 30, 2014 in Steelville, Missouri. They moved to High Ridge, Missouri where she initially worked in the bakery at Food For Less where she took pride in making the perfect donut. She later put her talent to work at the Blue Owl Sweet Shoppe (Home of the Sky High Pie) in House Springs, Missouri. She loved to cook to perfection. They later relocated to Steelville, Missouri and enjoyed living near the river. She often used her culinary gift in cooking outdoors over the open fire. She worked at Cuba Manor as a Certified Med Tech (CMT) and cared for the residents for eight years She had a green thumb and could grow a large variety of vegetables and flowers. She loved her cats and dogs and especially her pot belly pig, "Bacon". On January 19, 1957 Shirley married Louis Kuntz. Shirley retired from Boys and Girls Town in 2001 as a Cottage Life Coordinator. She enjoyed wagon train and camping trips with the children. Calvin married Phyllis Stricklin. Calvin drove a dump truck for over 30 years and for the last 20+ years he was the owner/operator of Calvin Murray Hauling LLC. He drove during the day and was his own mechanic at night. Calvin enjoyed doing whatever the boys were doing. They went off-roading, raced 4 wheelers, rock climbing, deer hunting and he would ride the rides at the fair with the boys. Calvin liked going to the river, camping and fishing. He would go to the car shows with his 1970 orange Chevy Nova. He could build or remodel anything. Pursley and passed away on August 10, 2020. She spent her childhood and grew up in Steelville, Missouri where she was active in 4-H and numerous school activities. She graduated from Steelville R-3 High School in 1962. After some career education Sharon worked in St. Louis, Missouri, for a number of years as a key punch operator and data entry clerk. Later she was the owner of Inglis-Pursley Antiques in St. Louis' Central West End. In the 80's Sharon moved to Pompano Beach, Florida, where she would remain until her passing. In Florida, Sharon was employed at Barnett Bank, Holman Honda, the Stonewall Library & Archives and by Captain Robert Jackson at Bar None. She was a valued employee, known for her dedication, cooperative spirit, and courtesy. She was a giving soul with an infectious laugh. She loved to have guests and special dinners, whether at her house or at a restaurant, particularly after moving to Florida. She loved to return to Missouri to attend family reunions whenever she could. She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur E. Pursley; and two sisters, Carol Jean Clark and Jo Ellen Finkelstein. Ed served our country honorably in the United States Army for six years. He received several service medals including Korean Service Medal with one bronze star, UN Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He performed his duty assignment as an engineer supply specialist for the 97th Engineer Company. He married Rose Lee Branson on December 22, 1964 in Steelville, Missouri. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as a switchman/brakeman until retirement. He was a member of the Spirit of St. Louis #27 Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the United Transportation Union since 1955. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying airplanes and riding 4 wheelers. Brady John Snelson Brady John Snelson of Rolla, Missouri was born in Rolla, Missouri on February 15, 1995 to Greg and Tommi (Woolsey) Snelson and passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at the age of 25 years. He was a Rolla High School Class of 2014 graduate, where he excelled at sports. From an early age Brady played football and baseball. Although his greatest sport was wrestling with his little brother, whom he lovingly nick-named "Trey Savage." Brady loved his brother so much that he had "Trey Savage" tattooed on his arm. Brady loved hunting and fishing. He was a third generation carpenter, and really loved his trade. He would say many times "it was in his blood." He took great pride in his work and loved working for Brock Meadows. His witty sense of humor, irresistibleness, his sympathy and compassion to everyone in his life including strangers, and willingness to help others will never be forgotten. His legacy of love, charm and benevolence will live on in the hearts and souls of his family and friends forever and that laughter - infectious. Brady attended the Core program in Branson, Missouri. It was during his time at Core that he found Christ through the 12-step program and was saved. Norma Lee "Stormy Normy" Waller Norma Lee "Stormy Normy" Waller (nee Edgar) of Arnold, Missouri, formerly of Steelville, Missouri, was born on Friday, May 16, 1924 in Steelville, Missouri to Corbitt and Myrtle May (Bobbitt) Edgar and passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2020 at the age of 96 years, 3 months and 4 days. Norma accepted the Lord at a young age and served Him faithfully throughout her life. She graduated from Ritenour High School in St. Louis, Missouri. Her brother, Jewel, introduced her to his best friend and as fate would have it, William Otis Waller become her husband on December 21, 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri. Norma spent their formative years as a stay at home mom. She went to work for Benzinger Paint Factory in Afton, Missouri until they closed in 1975. She persevered through a long physical recovery from a head on car collision in 1964. She later went to work for General American Life Insurance Company in St. Louis, Missouri, first as a cashier, then as a cook until she retired. In 1984 she returned to her roots in Steelville, Missouri where she was very active at her church, Center Point Baptist. She taught Sunday School, participated and led in the Women's Missionary Union, and served in the kitchen including organizing church meals and bereavement meals. She moved to Cuba, Missouri for a few years and then moved to Arnold, Missouri to be near her children. She continued her active church involvement in First Baptist Church of Arnold, Missouri. Norma loved to cook, bake. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Otis Waller; parents, Corbitt and Myrtle Edgar; parents-in-law, William and Minerva "Eva" (Setzer) Waller; brother, Jewel (Regent) Edgar; brothers-in-law, Lee (Nina) Waller, Earl (Gladys) Waller and Pearl Waller; and sisters-in-law, Beulah (Dewey) Burns and Zula (Walter) VanVickle. She is survived by her son, Jerry (Diane) Waller of Arnold, Missouri; daughter, Barbara Ann Waller of Arnold, Missouri; grandchildren, Mark (Karissa) Waller, Stephen (Corin) Waller, Erin (Erik) DeVore, Rebecca Damier (fiancˇ Aaron Arnold), and Alexander "Alex" Knox, all of Arnold, Missouri and Christopher K nox of House Springs, Missouri; great grandchildren, Corbin, Peyton, Barron, Kolten, Rielyn, Declan, Jamieson, Kellan and Dastan, all of Arnold, Missouri, Hoyt and Grady, both of Barnhardt, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri. Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri with Pastor Matt Cook officiating. Burial was at the Steelville Cemetery in Steelville, Missouri.
