MO Local Obituaries for the Week of September 7, 2000 Fern Deloris Hutson Hanson Fern Deloris Hutson Hanson, was born January 22, 1918, in Dent County, to the union of Charles Everett and Euin Ethel (Butts) Cotner. She passed away August 7, 2000 at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 16 days. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Salem, and of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association. She taught school in Crawford County for 37 years before retirement. Those proceeding her in death were her parents, and husbands, George Hutson and Leroy Hanson. She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Smith and husband Garrett of Hillsboro, and Sharon Simpson and husband Dan of Owensboro, Kentucky; one brother, Delmar Cotner and wife Violet, of Salem; two sisters, Laverne Gregory of Salem and Ruth Haley of Arnold; four grandchildren, Cindy Trokey and husband Richard of Marion, Illinois, Tommy Hassol of Hillsboro, Cheryl and Roger Simpson of Cincinnati, Ohio; and one special great grandson, Brandon Trokey of Marion, Illinois; and special friend, Herschel Hubbs of Salem, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Family members serving as pallbearers were, Roger Simpson, Mike Polizzi, Larry Haley, Jarred Brown, John Daniels and Tommy Hassol; honorary pall bearer Brandon Trokey. Music was provided by Jarred Brown, vocalist, and Karen Brown, pianist. Funeral services were held August 10, 2000 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel, Salem with Rev. Darrell Tharp, and Bro. Rod Farthing officiating. Interment was in the Sligo Cemetary. Joseph W. Tanner Joseph W. Tanner of Cuba, Missouri passed away Sunday, August 27, 2000 at the age of 73 years. Mr. Tanner was born September 9, 1926 at Mt. Vernon, Illinois to the late John Henry and Sarah Edna (Thornburg) Tanner. He was raised near Piggott, Arkansas and at the age of 16 came to Missouri to work. On July 12, 1950 he was married to Cecelia Jackson at House Springs, Missouri and to this marriage five children were born. Mr. Tanner was a retired employee of Frisco Transportation Company, for which he worked for 38 years. He enjoyed deer and turkey hunting and bass fishing. He was a loving father and husband and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. At the age of 6 years Mr. Tanner was baptized into the Baptist faith although he didn't practice his faith, he was a God fearing man. He is survived by his wife Cecelia nee Jackson of Cuba, three sons, Michael of Cuba, Bobby and wife Tabitha of Bourbon, Missouri and Alvin and wife Melissa of St. Louis, two daughters, Sarah Minor and husband Louis of Berryman, Missouri, and Rebecca Davis of Cuba. One brother, Wayne Tanner of St. Louis County, Missouri, one step-brother, John Garner of Bourbon, three sisters, Mildred Battocletti of St. Louis County, Missouri, Freda McBride of St. Peters, Missouri, Sadie Pollock of the state of California and one step-sister, Imogene Tanner of Cuba, Missouri. Ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 30, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri. Jessie Marie Callahan Edgar Jessie Marie Callahan Edgar, nee Edgar, of Cuba, Missouri, formerly of Cherryville, Missouri, was born Thursday September 2, 1920, at Czar, Missouri, a daughter of the late Walter Dunlap and Mary (Moses) Dunlap. She died Tuesday August 22, 2000, at the Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Sullivan, Missouri, at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 20 days. Jessie was united in marriage to Noah C. Callahan, one son and three daughters were born to this union. After his death in 1980, she married William H. Edgar. He too preceded her in death, July 20, 1993. She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Clyde, Howard, Wesley, Jeff and Roy Dunlap and one sister, Annie Bryant. Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her three daughters, Ruby and husband Lawrence Reed of Cuba, Missouri, Barbara and husband Larry Elder of Cedar Hill, Missouri, and Darlene and husband Gordon Young of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; one son Richard Callahan and wife Shirley of Cherryville, Missouri. One sister Ida Springs of St. Ann, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, Pearl Dunlap of Sikeston, Missouri and Eva Harris of Cuba, Missouri; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Marple Icelene DeGonia Marple Icelene DeGonia, nee Perkins, was born Thursday May 29, 1924, at Dillard, Missouri, a daughter of the late William J. Parkins and Cary Belle Parkins (nee Pyatt). She entered eternal rest Sunday August 26, 2000, at the Beverly Healthcare, Sullivan, Missouri, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 29 days. On September 14, 1947, at Keysville, Missouri, she was united in marriage to George DeGonia. One son, James and one daughter, Susan were born to this union. George preceded her in death as did two brothers, Delbert and Gilbert Parkins and three sisters, Marie, Ollie and Bessie Parkins. Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her devoted daughter, Susan Gargus, her loving son, James DeGonia and wife Judy, all of Bourbon, Missouri; eight grandchildren, two great-grandsons and six great-granddaughters. Buck Jefferson Martin Buck Jefferson Martin was born Wednesday April 5, 1944, at Cherryville, Missouri, a son of the late Cebe Martin and Beulah (Atchinson) Martin. He entered eternal life Friday August 25, 2000, at his home in Eureka, Missouri, at the age of 56 years, 4 months and 20 days. On May 12, 1966, at Cherryville, Missouri, Buck was united in marriage to Cleta Jean Cottrell, daughter of Vencil and Alline Cottrell. One daughter Lori Ann Martin was born to this union. They enjoyed thirty-two years together. He served his country in the United States Army and was honorable discharged after receiving the rank of SGT (T), May 31, 1970. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Oren Martin, and his father-in-law Vencil Cottrell. Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife, Cleta of the home, their daughter Lori Ann and husband Luke Ritter; two grandsons, Grant and Burke Ritter all of West Palm Beach, Florida; mother-in-law, Alline Cottrell of Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday August 29, 2000 in the Britton Chapel with Rev. Stan Collins officiating. Musical selections were provided by vocalist Cheryl Nelson. Committal prayers and interment were in Steelville Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri. Pallbearers were Terry Garrison, Marshall Martin, Matthew Martin, Mitchell Martin, Richard Martin and Rob Morton. Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. William J. Sanders William J. "Bill" Sanders, son of Jewell Sanders and Ethel (Reeves) Sanders, was born November 2, 1917, in Steelville, Missouri. He died, after a long illness, on January 4, 2000, in Reseda, California. He is survived by a nephew, Anthony "Tony" Broccoli, a niece Christina "Tina" (Broccoli) Brewer, of Los Angeles, California, an aunt, Ellen (Reeves) Haywood, of Crystal River, Florida, and a good friend, Harold Pyfrom, of Reseda, California. Harold nursed and cared for Bill during the years when he was terminally ill with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Nedra (Sanders) Broccoli, his brother-in-law Albert "Cubby" Broccoli, nephew Douglas Evans, a niece, Penelope "Penny" Clark, and a brother-in-law, Buddy Clark. Bill attended Steelville School through the fifth grade. Then his parents and he and his sister moved to a suburb of Chicago. He was a veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Navy 1941-1945. He was a photographer in the navy. After his discharge from the navy he moved to California, where he lived the remainder of his life. His particular interests and hobbies were photography, genealogy, and the growing of orchids. He did genealogy research on many Crawford County families who were ancestors and relatives of his. Among those families were Sanders, Reeves, Smith, Daniels, Westover, and Isgrig. He put much information on those families on the Internet. His paternal grandparents were Andrew J. Sanders and Nellie (Daniels) Sanders. His maternal grandparents were Charles Reeves and Hallie (Smith) Reeves. After Bill's retirement, he visited many times in Steelville with his great-aunt, Edith (Smith) Scott, and with his distant relatives and many friends in Steelville and other places in Crawford and Dent Counties. It was his wish to be cremated and his ashes brought to Steelville, which he always considered home, to be interred by his grandfather Sanders' grave, in the Steelville Cemetery. Interment was in the Steelville Cemetery on August 31, 2000 under the direction of Britton Brothers Funeral Home. Roy Alfred Lawson Roy Alfred Lawson of Cuba, Missouri was born on September 19, 1918 at Scotia, California to the union of Harry Lawson and Edna Lawson nee Terry and passed away on August 28, 2000 at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center of Rolla, Missouri at the age of 81 years 11 months and 9 days. On May 30, 1952 he was united in marriage to Frances Calhoun at Pocahontas, Arkansas. They had been happily married for 48 years. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Robert Lawson, son-in-law Marvin Johnson and one grandson Larry Abnet. Roy had retired out of the United States Marine Corp after 28 and 1/2 years. During the time he was in, he was awarded the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with one bronze star, Victory medal World War II, China Service medal, National Defense Service medal, Korean Service medal with three bronze stars, Korean Presidential Unit Citation for services 1950-1953. He was honorably discharged on January 31, 1971 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the Cuba VFW Post No. 7147. Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his loving wife Francis Lawson; one daughter Edna Johnson; one brother Harry Lawson and wife Marie; 4 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends. Roy was a devoted husband, loving father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, good friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Roy Alfred Lawson was in state at Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri where funeral services were held on Thursday, August 31, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Charles Ledbetter officiating. Interment was in the Steelville Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri. All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri. Robert Klem, James Holifield, Jerry Holifield, Scott Lawson, Richard Johnson, and Steven Johnson Jr. served as pallbearers. John Weber, Jr. John Weber, Jr. was born May 4, 1923 to the union of John and Velma Weber in Steelville, MO. He passed away August 26, 2000 at his home in Grain Valley, MO at the age of 77 years, 3 months, and 2 days. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the outdoors in general. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and was a member of the VFW. He retired from the Defense Mapping Agency after 20 years in 1973, and then worked at Indian Springs Lodge, Steelville for 10 years before moving to Kansas City. Those proceeding him in death were his parents, and two brothers, Haskel Weber and Larry Weber; one sister Wilma Nabe. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Edith Weber of the home; two daughters Mary White of Hampton, Virginia and Lorie Collins of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two sons James Weber of Ethel, Louisiana and Stan Weber of Saudi Arabia. Four sisters, Lavern McPeters and husband Paul, Faye Wright and husband Edwin, Bonnie Garrison and husband Clarence, Sue Aspin; two brothers, Bob Weber and wife Dorothy, and Bill Weber and wife Linda; 12 grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
