Emmitt Charles Bunton
Emmitt Charles Bunton of St. James, Missouri was born on May 19, 1929 to
Thomas and Ceclia (Cochran) Bunton and passed away at the Phelps County
Regional Medical Center on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the age of 85 years,
3 months, and 10 days.
Emmitt was united in marriage to Shirley Headrick on June 20, 1963 in Rolla,
Missouri and to this union five children were born. Emmitt worked in
maintenance for V-K Chevrolet; and as a night watchman for Boys Town.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Ceclia Bunton; wife,
Shirley Bunton; one daughter, Linda Kay Henson; two brothers, Herman and
Thurman Bunton and one sister, Juanita Martin.
He is survived by two sons, Rick Henson and wife Darlene of Jefferson City,
Missouri and Terry Henson and wife Kelley of Edgar Springs, Missouri; two
daughters, Cheryl Watson and husband Wade and Brenda Black and husband Jim,
both of St. James, Missouri; three brothers, Delmar Bunton and wife Shirley
of New Florence, Missouri, Darel Bunton and Donald Bunton Sr., both of Rolla,
Missouri; two sisters, Edna Wolfert and husband Norman of Moscow Mills,
Missouri and Genevieve Crain of Troy, Missouri; nine grandchildren; eight
great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at
the Asher Cemetery with Don Harris officiating.

Michael Leslie Burch
Michael Leslie Burch of Leasburg, Missouri, formerly of St. Louis, Missouri,
was born September 25, 1942 in Houston, Texas to Francis Leslie and Marie
Helen Burch, nee Hahn, and passed away Monday, August 31, 2009 at the age
of 66 years.
He was united in marriage to Sandra Patient in 1961 and to this union one
son was born.
Michael served his country in the Viet Nam War and was honorably discharged
in 1966.
In December 1968 he was united in marriage to Vickey Lee Graven and to this
union one son was born.
Michael worked as a St. Louis Firefighter for 10 years and always enjoyed his
job as a firefighter along with the fun times at the firehouse. He enjoyed
animals and farming and became a successful business owner in the waste
hauling industry.
He loved fishing, hunting and collecting old cars.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Marie Burch; his son,
Michael Alen Burch; other relatives and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Vickey Burch of Leasburg, Missouri; son Matthew
Burch and wife Wittney of Rolla, Missouri; grandson, Craig Burch of Leasburg,
Missouri; brothers, Gary Burch and wife Sandra of Webster Groves, Missouri,
Patrick Burch and wife Julia of Kirkwood, Missouri, Timothy Burch and wife
Andrea of Desoto, Missouri; sister-in-law, Connie Elias and husband Dave of
Leasburg, Missouri; brother-in-law, Patrick Nelson of Leasburg, Missouri;

William R. “Bob” Cottrell
William R. “Bob” Cottrell of Steelville, Missouri, was born August 22, 1938
at Dillard, Missouri to Cletis and Marie (nee Setzer) Cottrell and passed
away Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis,
Missouri at the age of 71 years.
On August 22, 1964 in St. Louis, Missouri, he was married to Karen Diane
(Mullen) Cottrell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cletis and Marie Cottrell; a sister,
Geraldine Markel and two brothers-in-law, Bill Pope and Dave Markel.
Bob grew up in Dillard, Missouri and after high school went to college at
Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, but came home to work at
First Community National Bank for 17 1/2 years. While in banking, he attended
the School of Banking in Wisconsin for two years. After leaving the bank in
1979, he and Karen bought a farm and went into business for themselves and
built the Huzzah Valley Stables and resort business. What began as a few
campsites and canoes quickly grew into a favorite vacation spot known as
Huzzah Valley Resort attracting visitors from far and wide. It was here that
he became the man known to so many as “Huzzah Bob.”
Bob was a member of many organizations and was the first president and one
of the first founders of the Ozark Trail Blazers Association; a member of
the NACLO (Nat. Assoc. of Canoe Livery Outfitters and was the Midwest
Director, PPA (Professional Paddle sports Assoc.), NRA, MO Cattleman’s
Association, Crawford County Cattleman’s Assoc., MO Campground & RV Park
Association, National Cutting Horse Association, American Quarter Horse
Association, Ozark Heritage Tourism Association, MO Canoe & Floaters
Association and co-founder of the Mid-Missouri Canoe Association. He was
also a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Steelville and served in
the Army National Guard of Missouri.
Bob had many hobbies and Colorado Elk hunting for 39 years was one of his
favorites. He enjoyed riding horses, showing horses and was a show judge
for many years. He loved to fish for striped bass and some gigging when he
had a chance. He enjoyed playing cards, all water sports and especially
water skiing. He loved traveling to all parts of the United States and all
over the world, but the last few years he and Karen enjoyed going to Arizona
in their RV.
He is survived by his wife Karen of 45 years; his five children, Holly Marie
Cottrell, Julie Ann Bass and husband Stephan, Corey Warner Cottrell and
wife Tonya, Colin Dillard Cottrell and Karey Elizabeth Franz and husband
Jess all of Steelville, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Brendan Robert Bass,
Hannah Mae Cottrell, Cayman Rebecca Cottrell, Trent Alexander Bass, Chase
William Cottrell, Cale Benjamin Cottrell and Warner John Cottrell; one
brother, Jim Cottrell and wife Joyce of Cherryville, Missouri; one
sister-in-law, Rosemary Pope of DeSoto, Missouri; other relatives and
friends.
Visitation was from 3-8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at the
Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri.
A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at
St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Steelville, Missouri with Father James
Finder officiating. Reading of the scriptures was by Sara Farmer and Tonya
Cottrell. Music was played by organist and vocalist, Delores Bell. Serving
at the altar were Jake and Joe Howdeshell.
Casket bearers were Kenny Wood, Kenny Staples, Lenny Staples, Blake Wishon,
Lance Cottrell, Erik Pope, John Bell, Spencer Doss and Tim Pope. Honorary
casket bearers were Gene Maggard, JR Isom, Charlie Yowell, Paul Perkins,
Matthew “Dillon” Parry, Wayde Grandstaff, Steve West, James Fonz Davis,
Robert “Bear” Bass, Brad Brewer, Eddie Walls, Dean Wymer, Phil Mitchell,
John Perkins, Jim Vaughn, Skip Wishon, Stephan Bass and Jess Franz.
Committal prayer and burial with full military honors were conducted by the
U.S. Army in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Leasburg, Missouri.

Doris Gean Dunlap
Doris Gean Dunlap was born July 10, 1951 in Bixby, Missouri to Faye and
Howard Chandler, and passed away August 30, 2009 in Boss, Missouri at the
age of 58 years, one month and 20 days.
On August 21, 1968 Doris was united in marriage to Ed Dunlap and to this
union three children were born.
Being a hard worker, Doris loved working on the farm. Spending time with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great pleasure,
especially working with them on the farm.
She was preceded in death were her father, Howard Chandler in 2008; one
grandson, Seth Sanders; an infant brother, Harold Chandler; other relatives
and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Ed of the home in Boss, Missouri; her mother,
Faye Chandler of Viburnum, Missouri; children, Marilyn Pyeatt and husband

Ida Zelphia (Perry) Hand
Ida Zelphia (Perry) Hand, of Rolla, Missouri, was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, on
December 12, 1929, to Isaac John and Iola Mae (Hawkins) Clancy passed away
Monday, August 31, 2009, at the age of 79.
She was married to Jack Perry who preceded her in death in 1968. She later
married Jim Hand, who passed away in 1995.
Ida enjoyed playing the piano, quilting, doll collecting, and spending time
with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac and Iola Clancy; husbands,
Jack Perry and Jim Hand; sister, Ila Ruth Clancy and brother, Lyle Eugene
Clancy,
She is survived by four daughters, Caroline Manuel of Jackson, Missouri,
Linda Gibbons of Rolla, Missouri, Ruth Davis of Rolla, Missouri and
Brenda Grable of Jefferson City, Missouri; two brothers, Lee John Clancy
and Leslie Walter Clancy, both of St. James, Missouri; one sister, Iva Pearl
Yates of Licking, Missouri; 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Null & Son Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 11 a.m. in the
Rolla City Cemetery.

Ronald Henson
Ronald Henson was born January 13, 1951 in Vida, Missouri and passed away
August 30, 2009 in Rolla, Missouri at the age of 58 years.
Ronald was active in the Moose Lodge and the VFW. He liked to hunt, fish,
and play golf, and loved music and playing his guitar. He had a generous
nature and was always willing to help others.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Henson.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Frances Heavin; son, Ronnie Lee Henson
of Michigan; daughters, Tammy Lynn Gebbink of Indiana and Jessica Nicole
Henson of St. James, Missouri; brothers, Roger Henson and wife Janet Sue of
Rolla, Missouri and Allen Ray Henson and wife Liddy of Rolla, Missouri;
sisters, Carol Guidicini of Rolla, Missouri, Joan Colgrove and husband John
of Newburg, Missouri and Elaine Huffman of Springfield, Missouri; grand-
children, Jaden, Braden, Brenden, Shayla, Selena, Jakayla, and Jace; along

Thomas L. Kemp
Thomas L. Kemp of Cuba was born to Lee and Bertha Elizabeth (Mahan) Kemp on
Thursday, August 30, 1945 in Hickory Ridge, Arkansas and passed away Tuesday,
September 1, 2009 in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 64 years.
Tom was a retiree of the Chrysler Corporation where he worked for many years.
He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. and enjoyed fishing and
hunting.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Bertha Kemp; one sister and
other relatives and friends.
He is survived by his friends, Wes and wife Michelle Creson and family of
Cuba, Missouri and Bo Enix and family of Steelville, Missouri; his dog
Princess.
Private services were held.

LaVera Carol Kessler
LaVera Carol Kessler Ortiz of Steelville, Missouri, formerly of Chimayo,
New Mexico, was born on May 4, 1936, in St. Louis, Missouri to
Donald W. Kessler and Ina Smith Kessler and passed away, August 28, 2009,
at her daughter Francina’s home in Steelville, Missouri at the age of 73
years.
She received an undergraduate degree in education from the University of
Missouri at Columbia and received her Master’s degree in education from the
University of New Mexico. She also attained recognition with numerous awards
and certifications in education. An active member of the Presbyterian Church,
she moved to New Mexico in 1958, as a Mission teacher with the Presbyterian
Mission.
She taught first at John Hyson in Chimayo, where she met Anselmo Ortiz. She
and Anselmo were married on August 9, 1964, and had been married for 32 years
at the time of his death in 1996. She was then the Director and Head teacher
of the Presbyterian Day School in Truchas, and eventually joined the
Espanola school system. She was a teacher and long term Principal of
Mountain View Elementary in Cordova for more than 18 years.
In 1993, she became Principal of Los Nińos Kindergarten in Espanola, where
she remained until her retirement in 1997. Carol was an active member of the
Presbyterian Church, sang in various choirs and played the piano. She was
also an active member of Church Women United. She enjoyed teaching, learning
and giving all children an opportunity to grow and be their very best. She
loved gardening, fresh flowers, singing, and long road trips with her husband
and children where they had the opportunity to see the wonders of the world.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Ina Kessler and her
husband, Anselmo.
She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth “Beth” Ortiz of New York City,
New York, Francina Ortiz Halbert of Steelville, Missouri; sons, Donald M.
Ortiz of Santa Fe and Bruce A. Ortiz of Chimayo; sister, Barbara K. Young
of Kansas City, Kansas; grandson, Joseph Anselmo Ortiz; step granddaughter,
Sara Baca; daughter-in-law, Anja Baca, all of Santa Fe, and son-in-law,
Kevin Halbert of Steelville, Missouri; other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at the
DeVargas Funeral Home in Espanola, New Mexico.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2009 at the
First Presbyterian Church in Truchas, New Mexico.
Serving as casket bearers were Joseph Ortiz, Brian Hunt, Ralph Medina,
Carroll Hunt, Stephen Martinez and Toby Lopez. Honorary casket bearers were
Kevin Halbert, Larry Medina, Eric Hunt, Joe Baca and Robert Cortez.

Jo Smith nee Roderique
Jo Smith nee Roderique of Sullivan, Missouri formerly of Bourbon, Missouri
was born on Monday, July 19, 1909 in Potosi, Missouri to Otis James Roderique
and Ruth Jane Compton Roderique and passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2009 at
the age of 100 years, 1 month and 11 days.
Jo’s parents moved the family to Indian Creek near Sullivan, Missouri where
she grew up. On July 11, 1931 she married Howard T. Smith at First Baptist
Church, Sullivan, Missouri and to this union one son was born.
They made their home in St. Louis, Missouri until after WWII, the family
then moved to Leasburg, Missouri where they had a small farm. They eventually
moved to Bourbon and became very active in the community. She was always at
her husband’s side helping him with his duties when he served as Mayor for
eight years. She also, became a Bourbon businesswoman and opened “Jo’s Gift
Shop,” where customers shopped for unique gifts and enjoyed her smile and
special charm. Jo was a doll collector.
Howard and Jo were honored to be chosen “Citizens of the Year” by the local
Bourbon Booster Club for their many hours of volunteer work for the city.
They celebrated 73 years of marriage before his passing on Sept. 14, 2004.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Ruth Roderique; husband,
Howard; sister, Cecile Vieten; and sister-in-law, Fertina Roderique.
She is survived by her son, James H. (Roberta) Smith of Bourbon, Missouri;
grandchildren, Kelly Jo (Walt) Bauer of Fenton, Missouri, Dean (Kathy) Vaughn
of Sullivan, Missouri, Doug (Diane) Vaughn of Bourbon, Missouri, Christy Smith
of St. Louis, Missouri, and Rick Smith of Washington, Missouri; brother Hamlin

Clifford Schafer
Clifford Schafer of Columbia, Missouri was born at home in Jadwin, Missouri
on a March morning in 1950 to Harold and Dorothy ‘Dot’ (Miller) Schafer and
passed away on September 3, 2009 at the age of 59 years.
He graduated from Salem High School in 1968 and married Linda Martin one year
later.
In 1971 he was drafted into the United States Army, where he worked as a
fixed radio operator and later as an avionics technician. He was honorably
discharged in 1978 and returned to his beloved town of Jadwin.
He continued his service to the country as a cartographer at the United
States Geological Survey in Rolla, Missouri. Near the end of his career there,
he married his second wife, Connie Kilgore. He retired in 2005, but later took
a job as Master Controller in the engineering department of KOMU 8 television
in Columbia.
Clifford received an Associate degree in Electronics from Linn Technical in
1971. Later in his life he also received a degree in Auto Mechanics from
Rolla Vocational Technical. He was a man of many talents. He enjoyed music,
enlisting in high school glee club, becoming a fixture at the USGS Talent
Show, and later participating in the Rolla Chamber Singers.
He was a motorcycle enthusiast, touring many local and international
destinations. And he enjoyed writing poems and songs, many of them expressing
his enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures. A collection of his work was
published in 2007.
He was talkative, easy-going, and had a sense of humor that drew people to
him, in spite of being a notorious punster. He was a giving person in his
life and in his death. Through organ donation he is helping over 50 people.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Killgore Schafer of Columbia, Missouri;
son, Eric Schafer and wife Angel of Portland, Oregon; daughters, Amelia
Schafer and wife Sue of Denver, Colorado and Mandy Venable and husband Larry
of Rolla, Missouri; step daughter, Laurel Killgore of Columbia, Missouri;
eight grandchildren, Kevon, Nathanyl, Tristan, Cayden, Lilah, Kai, Ava and
Eli; sister, June Jadwin and husband DL; “brother” Rich Strickland and wife
Darlene; brother-in-law, Thom and sister-in-law, Barb.

Edward George Simpson, Jr.
Edward George Simpson, Jr. of St. James, Missouri passed away Tuesday,
September 1, 2009 in Rolla, Missouri at the age of 78. Edward was born
July 29, 1931 in Granite City, Illinois to Edward George and Mary Louise
(Smith) Simpson.
Edward served his country in the United States Air Force from 1949-1953.
He was united in marriage to Mildred Kozieja Simpson on February 7, 1959.
Edward was a truck driver for many years. After realizing his great gift of
gab and love for people he set out to work in public relations, working at
the Lake of the Ozarks at Tan-Tar-A Resorts was always fun and summer at the
lake was something Edward looked forward to, the lake was always busy and
Edward was always ready to make sure all the guests enjoyed their vacations.
After moving to St. James he then worked for St. James Winery, again making
many friends, enjoying the people from many states that would stop and come
in to taste the great wines of St. James, Missouri. He loved fishing, growing
tomatoes, socializing, and time spent with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edeard and Mary Louise Simpson.
He is survived by his wife Mildred, of St. James, Missouri; children, Jan
Dixon and husband Don of St. James, Missouri, Michael Simpson and special
friend Julie of Washington, Missouri; sisters, Rose Naumann and Mary Ann Koch
of St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren, Cindy, Randy and Robert; four great
grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Patricia Marie Waidmann
Patricia Marie Waidmann of Cuba was born to Leo R. Bogue, Sr. and Alice Marie
(Geesaman) Bogue on Friday, February 22, 1935 at St. Louis, Missouri and
passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Sullivan, Missouri at the age of
74 years, 6 months and 8 days.
Pat was united in marriage to Charles Waidmann on November 29, 1952 at
Bourbon, Missouri and to this union one son was born.
Pat and Charlie were Proprietors of the Gerald Lumber Company in Gerald,
Missouri and retired in 1979. She also helped her son Randy as a bookkeeper
at Do-Boys Pizza. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, flower arranging,
ceramics and decorating for Halloween and Christmas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo R. Bogue, Sr. and Alice Marie
(Geesaman) Bogue; one sister, Mary Lou Menz; one brother-in-law, John Menz;
one sister-in-law, Mildred Bogue; other relatives and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Waidmann of Cuba, Missouri; one son,
Randy and wife Dawn Waidmann of Cuba, Missouri; two step-grandsons, William

Juanita Mae Weber of Cuba, Missouri was born Sunday, December 11, 1927 at
St. Clair, Missouri to Albert H. and Josephine (nee Jones) Sohn and passed
away Sunday, August 30, 2009 at Cuba, Missouri at the age of 81 years,
8 months and 19 days.
Juanita was united in marriage to Harold Weber at St. Clair, Missouri on
November 23, 1944 and to this union six children were born.
Juanita worked for the Cuba Shoe Factory in her younger years, but she spent
most of her life raising her children, spoiling her grandchildren and great
grandchildren and taking care of everyone who needed her help. In her spare
time she raised a beautiful garden and canned every summer. Her flower
gardens were always beautiful and she was the greatest cook of all.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; parents, Albert and
Josephine Sohn; son, Larry Weber, other relatives and friends.
She is survived by her children, Wanda L. and husband Jack Hite of
Springfield, Missouri, Connie M. Weber of Cuba, Missouri, Jerry D. Weber
of Cuba, Missouri, Terry J. Weber of Fulton, Missouri and Christa D. Evanoff
of Columbia, Missouri; four sisters, Opal Kamper, Irene Weber, Selma Gullett
and Elsie Unnerstall all of St. Clair, Missouri; one brother, Allen
Sutterfield of California; 11 grandchildren, many great grandchildren;
other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held Wednesday, September 2, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. at the
Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri.
Funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 3, 2009 at the Britton
Funeral Home of Cuba. Special music will be “Amazing Grace,” “When We All
Get to Heaven,” “In the Garden” and “How Great Thou Art.”
Interment followed at the Midlawn Memorial Gardens, Union, Missouri.
Arrangements under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba,
Missouri.
