MO Local Obituaries for the Week of September 18, 2013 Alma Mae Carey Alma Mae Carey of Sullivan, Missouri was born July 14, 1921 in Sherman, Missouri to Oscar and Jenny Alice (Dean) Flanigan and passed away Thursday, September 12, 2013 at the age of 92 years. She and Harry Carey were united in marriage on March 22, 1939 in Union, Missouri. Soon after she was born the family moved to Sullivan, Missouri where Alma was raised. She was a homemaker for the majority of her life however she did work for a time at the ammunitions plant in Weldon Springs.  Alma helped out working around the family farm as she grew up and enjoyed gardening, quilting and embroidering. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Jenny Flanigan; her husband Harry on October 24, 2006; son, Harry Eugene Carey; two brothers, Ervin and Wilburn Flanigan; sister, Elnor Harmon; son-in-law, Jerry Hinson; and two grandsons, Scott Carey and Dale Sellers. She is survived by two sons, Phillip Carey of Cuba, Missouri and Gregory Carey of Owensville, Missouri; one daughter, Bertha (Bertie) Hinson of Owensville, Missouri; one daughter-in-law, Margie Carey of Cuba, Missouri; eight grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Visitation was from 4:30-8 p.m. Friday, at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri. Roman Alexander “JR” Conaway Roman Alexander “JR” Conaway of Sullivan, Missouri was born on February 28, 1942 at Liberty, Missouri to Roman Otto and Mary Elizabeth (Bailey) Conaway and passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at the age of 71 years. J.R., as he was known, was raised in the Steelville and Cherryville, Missouri area. On August 7, 1981, JR was united in marriage to Cheryl Woodruff at Sullivan, Missouri. He was employed by Fashion Shoe for many years, but for most of his working career he was self-employed in the furniture restoration business. JR was a natural handy man who enjoyed helping others. He loved watching old westerns, hunting and fishing. J.R. was a member and past Noble Grand of I.O.O.F. Lodge # 156 and was involved in the maintenance of the Oddfellows Cemetery and member of   Masonic Lodge #69 A.F. & A.M. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl of the family home; five sons, Jeffery Armistead of Fulton, Missouri, Robert Conaway of Springfield, Missouri, Terry Conaway of the state of West Virginia, Daniel Conaway of Sullivan, Missouri and Steven Conaway of Pevely, Missouri; one daughter, Brenda Bogacz of Cleburne, Texas; 11 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four brothers; nine sisters; other relatives and friends. Culver of Bourbon, Missouri, was born November 19, 1935 in St. James, Missouri to Robert Elwood and Agnes Katherine (Balmer) Culver, Sr. and passed away Thursday, September 12, 2013 at his home in Bourbon at the age of 77 years. He and Ethel Laverne Hartung were married November 15, 1954 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Cuba, Missouri.   Robert was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Bourbon, were he was a very active member especially with the youth programs. Robert was a member of the Sullivan Mason Lodge #69.  He helped to organize the Bourbon Area Community Center then served on its Board.   He worked with Cub Scout Pac 429 and served on the Bourbon Planning and Zoning Board for several years.  He worked hard for others through the Bourbon Ministerial Alliance and was a Bourbon Volunteer Fireman in the 50’s.  He worked for 15 years at Meramec Mining Company before going to work for Fabic Company and retiring after 21 years of service there. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ethel Laverne Culver; son, Robert Edward Culver and wife Tonya of Raymore, Missouri; sister, Mary Virginia Moody of Jefferson City, Missouri; two granddaughters, Rebecca and Meghan Culver; other relatives and friends. Hoevelmann of Sullivan, Missouri was born at Sullivan, Missouri on November 23, 1932 to Walter Henry and Mary Mae (Miller) Studdard and passed away at her home on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 12 days. She was a life long resident of the Sullivan area and on November 27, 1949 was married to Edward Hoevelmann at Gerald, Missouri. Dolores was employed for a time at the former Brown Shoe Company and a later worked at Paramount Headwear in Bourbon, Missouri, as a stitcher.  She enjoyed reading as a pastime and was a member of the Road Runners of the Bank of Sullivan.  Dolores attended Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ in Gerald, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary Studdard; husband, Edward Hoevelmann; two brothers, Junior and Edward Studdard; and sister, Virginia Dilks. She is survived by a son, Mike Hoevelmann and wife Judy of Sullivan, Missouri; one daughter, Joanne Weis and husband Walter of Rosebud, Missouri; a foster son, Gary Kraemer and wife Velma of St. Louis, Missouri; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; other relatives, and friends. Martin of LaGrange, Texas, formerly of St. James, Missouri, was born on January 1, 1914 in Lexington, Illinois to Frank and Anna (Petry) Matthews and passed away at the Care Inn of LaGrange in LaGrange, Texas on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the age of 99 years, 8 months and 7 days. Pauline was united in marriage to Jules Fredrick Martin on February 5, 1933 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jules Fredrick Martin on February 14, 2006 and her parents, Frank and Anna (Petry) Matthews. She is survived by one daughter, Pauline Wayman of LaGrange, Texas; one son, Paul Jules Martin of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Juanita, Anita, Barbara and Marie; four great grandchildren, John, Alyssa, Angelo and Drew; other relatives and friends. Ima Jean Nichols Ima Jean Nichols of Sullivan, Missouri was born on July 21, 1930 at Berryman, Missouri to Jesse and Frances (Trask) Nethington and passed away Friday, September 6, 2013 at the age of 83 years. The Nethington family later moved to Sullivan, Missouri where Ima Jean attended school. On August 24, 1957 she was united in marriage to Clarence Nichols in Sullivan, Missouri. She was employed by the former International Shoe Company and later at Paramount Headwear in Bourbon, Missouri. She loved children and in later years, baby sat for many families in her home. For the past 15 years Ima Jean made her home at Dunsford Court where she enjoyed the company of the other residents and staff. She professed her faith in Christ at an early age and was a long time member of First Assembly of God in Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Frances Nethington; husband, Clarence in 1979; a child in infancy; and one sister, Mary Ann Kindricks. She is survived by two sisters, Wilma McMillan and Joyce Coffman, both of Sullivan, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Street Edward Eugene Street, of St. James, Missouri was born in Gideon, Missouri on December 28, 1949 to George Edward and Blanch Lucille (Martin) Street and passed away at his home on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at the age of 63. On November 10, 1979 he married Millie Stanfield and they were later blessed with two children. Eddie was an avid horseman and thoroughly enjoyed country living. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Blanche Street; two sisters, Gloria Simmons and Marcia Pollard; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, C.P. and Artie Stanfield. She was united in marriage to Jesse Teasley on September 24, 1975. She enjoyed line dancing, fishing, shopping and spending time with family. She was preceded in death by her sister, Opal Flannagan and parents, Oscar and Ima Hughes. Neal “Mackey” Vaughn Neal “Mackey” Vaughn of Steelville, Missouri was born on October 15, 1936 in Elizabethtown, New Mexico to Levega Neal and Fannie Pauline McKinney Vaughn and passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 23 days. Neal served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War stationed in Munich, Germany as a MP. He married Sharon Lake on October 3, 1981 in Las Vegas, Nevada and moved to Missouri to open Meramec Springs Country Store and Campground with his brother Kenny Vaughn. There they produced many great memories with family and friends. In the late 80’s, Neal and Sharon moved to Lake Tahoe for a few years and enjoyed the slopes of Squaw Valley before returning to V egas where so many of their family called home. In 1999, some of the family decided to purchase Indian Springs Resort in Steelville, Missouri. During the resorts off season, Mackey would travel around the country visiting family and friends. He recently, enjoyed the Caribbean beaches of Merida, Mexico with family and friends on the white sands of the Yucatan Peninsula. He loved reading, spending time with his family playing cards, going to the movies and watching sports (Go Cardinals!). “Uncle Wackey” as he was known by a few, developed a reputation for his awesome fried chicken and ribs, but most of all he loved to laugh! He was preceded in death by his parents, Levega and Fannie Vaughn; and brother, Kenny Vaughn. Mildred Marie Watson Mildred Marie Watson was born in Dent County, Missouri, August 12, 1928 to John and Clarcia (Land) Bacon and passed away in Cuba, Missouri, September 11, 2013, at the age of 85 years. On April 6, 1946 Mildred was united in marriage to Gilbert W. Dotson, after his death, Mildred married Ondo Watson on December 16, 1968. Mildred was of the Pentecostal Faith and enjoyed crocheting, quilting and fishing. She loved working in her garden and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Clarcia Bacon; first husband, Gilbert Dotson; three sons, David, Ricky and Wayne Dotson; one brother, Edgar Bacon; one sister, Alma Theole; two grandchildren, Wayne Dotson Jr. and David Dotson Jr. and one step-son, Kyle Watson.
