MO Local Obituaries for the Week of Sept. 20, 2001 Leslie Howard Breuer, Sr. Leslie Howard Breuer, Sr. of Cuba, Mo. was born on August 22, 1911 to the union of John W. Breuer and Mary (Tynes) Breuer at Royal, Mo. and passed away on September 10, 2001 at his home near Cuba, Mo. at the age of 90 years and 18 days. He attended elementary school at Oak Grove, Job high school at Red Bird for two years and graduated from John F. Hodge High School in St. James, Mo. He farmed with his father and worked for many other farmers in the neighborhood. On February 2, 1935 he was united in marriage to Anita Irene Collins and moved to Cooper County, Mo. for three years, then moved back to this area. They purchased and improved a much admired cattle farm on Highway F where they lived for 60 years. Leslie and Irene were awarded Farm Family of the Year. He was a member of the Oak Grove Church of Christ and served as an Elder for many years. His parents, an infant sister, two sisters, Grace Breuer Geisler and Marie Breuer, two brothers, Thomas A. Breuer and John R. Breuer, one son John E. Breuer and two grandsons, Timothy A. Breuer and Timothy R. Breuer preceded him in death. Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his devoted wife of 66 years Anita Irene Breuer; five sons, Leslie H. Breuer, Jr. and wife Barbara, Richard H. Breuer and wife Jackie, Charles A. Breuer and wife Dianne, David J. Breuer and wife Bonnie and Mark Breuer; one daughter, Carolyn E. Breuer Thompson and husband Fred; one brother Ivan Breuer and wife Jean Helen; sister-in-law Jeanne Neuner; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 10 nieces and nephews; several cousins; other relatives and many friends. Leslie was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, brother, good friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Leslie Howard Breuer, Sr. was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. where funeral services were held on Friday, September 14, 2001 at 1 p.m. with Bill John officiating. Interment was in the Oak Grove Cemetery, St. James, Mo. All arrangements under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Memorials to the Oak Grove Cemetery, St. James, Mo. Clarice Ficke Mesger Clarice Ficke Mesger of Sullivan, Mo. passed away on Monday, September 10, 2001 at the age of 96 years. Mrs. Mesger was born on March 13, 1905 at Elmont, Mo. to the late Michael and Laura J. (Webb) Carey. She was raised in the Sullivan area, and, as a young woman, moved to St. Louis. While living there, Clarice worked for Century Electric. She later moved back to Sullivan, and worked for a number of years as a machine operator for the International Shoe Company. On December 16, 1938 Clarice was married to Walter E. Ficke at Troy, Mo. Mr. Ficke preceded her n death in 1956. Then, on November 25, 1959 she was married to Frank Mesger at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Sullivan. Mr. Mesger also preceded her in death in 1989. Clarice was a member of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church, the church's Ladies Aid Organization, and a charter member of the Russell Schmidt VFW Post 3987 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed watching baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, and playing cards. Mrs. Mesger will be remembered and cherished as a very caring person who really enjoyed life. She is survived by four step-daughters, Dorothy Ficke Descamps of the state of Montana, Anita Favre of Sullivan, Earline Ware and husband, George, of Bourbon, Mo., and Norma Turley and husband, Alan, of Fenton, Mo.; twelve step-grandchildren; eleven step-great-grandchildren; two nephews, Winston Harmon of House Springs, Mo. and Jerry Carey and wife, Viva Lou, of Sullivan; one niece, Catherine "Dolly" Chapman of Sullivan; one great-nephew, Jim Woods and wife, Betty Jo, of Sullivan; three great-nieces, Helen Ruwwe and husband, Selden, of Cuba, Mo., Bonnie Medling and husband, Jack, of Sullivan and Donna Rutledge and husband, Larry, of Union, Mo.; other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husbands, Mrs. Mesger was preceded in death by one stepson, Robert Mesger, two brothers, Eddie and Joseph Carey, two half-sisters, Allie Harmon and Grace Larkin, and one niece, Harriette Woods. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Reverend Jeffrey W. Duncan officiating. Interment was in Schmidt Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church or to the Gideons in memory of Clarice Ficke Mesger. Sybil Nicely Sybil (Humphrey) Nicely of Bourbon, Mo. was born on August 29, 1917 at Dryersburg, Tennessee to the union of Virgil Humphrey and Pearl (Ethridge) Humphrey and passed away on September 11, 2001 at the Missouri Baptist Hospital, Sullivan, Mo. at the age of 84 years, 12 days. On September 23, 1954 she was united in marriage to William (Bill) Nicely at Tijuana, Mexico. They were happily married until he preceded her in death on December 28, 1972. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Ernestine Lawrey and one sister Ernestine Headrick. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Bourbon, Mo. Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her loving son Michael Lawrey and wife Cecelia; two sisters Mae Dye and Edna Wright; two grandchildren Todd and Kellie Lawrey; one great-grandson Anthony Lawrey; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends. Sybil was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister, good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Sybil (Humphrey) Nicely was in state at the Calvary Baptist Church, Bourbon, Mo. where funeral services were held on Friday, September 14, 2001 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Devon Haus officiating. Interment was in the Crossroads Cemetery, Leasburg, Mo. All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Memorials to the American Cancer Society. Elza Marion West Elza Marion West of Cuba, Mo. was born on October 2, 1912 to the union of William Henry West and Fannie M. (Ryerson) West at Oak Hill, Mo. and passed away on September 11, 2001 at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center of Rolla, Mo. at the age of 88 years, 11 months and 9 days. On September 24, 1932 Elza was united in marriage to Ethel Stevens at Bourbon, Mo. One son, Gary, and two daughters, Peggy and Bonnie, were born to this union. Elza and Ethel had been happily married for 68 years. Elza was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Bonnie West, three brothers, Bransford, Alva Sr. and John West, and one sister Mamie Osborn. He was a retired trucking businessman. During World War II he worked on the Manhattan Project. Elza was a member of Cuba United Methodist Church and Cuba Masonic Lodge No. 312. Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his devoted wife Ethel West; one son Gary West and wife Kathleen; one daughter Peggy Powell and husband Paul; one sister Essie Bell; sister-in-law Catherine West; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends. Elza was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, good friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Elza Marion West was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. where Masonic Services were held on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at 7:30 p.m. by the Cuba Masonic Lodge No. 312. Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 1 p.m. at the Britton Chapel with Rev. Mike Hannah officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cuba, Mo.
