MO Local Obituaries for the Week updated September 22, 2006 Robert Lee Brand Robert Lee Brand of Cuba, Missouri was born on Saturday, October 11, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri to John Henry Brand and Gladys Minnie Jacobs. He passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at the age of 64 years, 11 months and 2 days. He retired from Bi-State Transit System in St. Louis, Missouri and has made Cuba, Missouri his home the last 15 years. He was an avid deer hunter, fisherman and loved the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clifford Brand, Harold Brand, Daniel Brand and Marvin Brand; sisters, Florence Brand, Wilma Christopher and husband Ed. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his children, Debra McCarthy and husband Robert of Georgetown, Kentucky and Donna Ortlip and husband Greg of Pacific, Missouri; sister, Christine Besemer and husband Carl of Cuba, Missouri; brothers, Elmer Brand and wife Berniece of Cuba, Missouri and Lawrence Brand of Taylorville, Georgia; grandchildren, Brittany Ortlip and Cheri McCarthy; special friend, Wanda Root of Marshall, Missouri; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation was at the Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2006. Funeral services were at the Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 16, 2006 with Rev. Jeff Schanbacher officiating. Burial was in the Kinder Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri with full military honors. The pallbearers were Steve Besemer, Bradley Besemer, Rob Brand, Larry Brand, Greg Ortlip and Robert McCarthy. All arrangements were under the direction of the Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri. Lillian Loretta Brummet Lillian Loretta Brummet was born November 13, 1921 in Copeland, Arkansas to the union of Maggie Ann Adams (nee Giles) and George Washington Adams. She passsed away at Cuba Manor in Cuba, Missouri on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at the age of 84 years. On December 20, 1941 she was united in marriage to John M. Brummet and to this union four children were born: Cheri, Buddy, Cindy and Jeffrey. Lillian and John were married for 56 years and nine months. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers and three sisters. Lillian and John Brummet moved to Cuba, Missouri in 1948 when they purchased the Central Super Market, later known as IGA Foodliner. Several years later, Lillian and John built the Fairway Shopping Center and owned the Brummet's Food Mart in that center. Lillian worked as bookkeeper and office manager throughout the years and also managed the produce department of Brummet's Food Mart for several years. She was also an activist in the community and worked with many community projects. She reorganized the Cub Scouts in 1954 and served as the Den Mother for many years. She was also active in getting the bond issues passed for a new school in the '50's and '60's, resulting in the school that is still being used today. She was chairman of the PTA at Cuba School in the same years and helped to increase the membership of that organization to 350 parents; the largest in Missouri at that time. Lillian was also active member and officer of the Ladies Civic Auxillary, associated with the Business Men's Club. These two organizations ultimately became the Cuba Chamber of Commerce, of which she is still a member. Lillian was also served on the Recklein Auditorium Board to help develop it into a community building. In the '60's, she sang with the Cuba Musical Group under the direction of Audrey Ove. She served on the board of this group until the group was terminated at the death of Audrey Ove in 1975. Among those who survive to mourn her passing are her four children, Cheri Peck and husband, Michael of Tuscon, Arizona, Bud Brummet and his wife, Debbie, of Cuba, Missouri, Cindy West and husband, Laury, of Sullivan, Missouri, and Jeffrey Brummet and wife, Jane, of St. James, Missouri. Also surviving are one brother; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and many friends. Visitation was held Friday, September 15, 2006 from 5-8 p.m. at Britton Funeral Home 904 West Washington St. Cuba, Missouri. Funeral service was Saturday, September 16, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Britton Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Pearson, officiating. Interment in Kinder Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri. June Marie Garrison June Marie Garrison, 77, of Washington, Illinois, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Proctor Hospital, Peoria, Illinois. She was born April 4, 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri to Walter William and Jesse Laura Stallings Lee, and married Melvin L. Garrison on September 15, 1946 in Potosi, Missouri. He survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Helen (Kevin) Craven of Washington, Illinois; two sons, Jerry W. Garrison of Ashland, Montana and Terry L. Garrison of Sheridan, Wyoming; three sisters, Betty (Lindell) Staples of Cuba, Missouri, Norma (Don) Yoakum of Villa Ridge, Missouri, and Marion (Allen) Burton of Sperry, Oklahoma; three brothers, Walter (Joyce) Lee of Leasburg, Missouri, Jim (Joyce) Lee of Cuba, Missouri and Dennis Lee of Sullivan, Missouri. Eight grandchildren, Laura (Thad) Powell of Washington, Illinois, Robyn McMaster of Edwardsville, Illinois, Dawn (Casey) Schrock of Washington, Illinois, Melania (Brian) Berg and Nick Craven, both of Elmwood, Illinois; Sandra (Brice) Beyer of Mackinaw, Illinois, Gregory Garrison of Peoria, Illinois and James (Misty) Garrison of Sheridan, Wyoming; 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She attended Glad Tidings Assembly of God in East Peoria, Illinois. She was a member of the Women's Ministries at Central Assembly of God in Peoria and taught Sunday School for many years. Local services were held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, August 27, 2006 at Glad Tidings Assembly of God in East Peoria. The Pastor Fred Doughty officiated. Visitation was from 2-3:30 p.m. on Sunday at the church. Deiters Funeral Home in Washington, Illinois was in charge of local arrangements. An additional service was at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at First Assembly of God Church in Bourbon, Missouri. Visitation was from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at the church. Burial was in the Bourbon Cemetery in Bourbon, Missouri. The Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri assisted with these arrangements. Louis Bartley Potter Louis Bartley Potter, 80, of Steelville, Missouri, passed away Tuesday evening, September 12, 2006 at the Gibbs Care Center. He was born Friday, August 6, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Louis G. and Winifred Moore Potter. He was united in marriage to Daphyne L. Sellers in 1945 at Mammoth Springs, Arkansas and to this union five children were born. Louis and Daphyne moved to Steelville, Missouri in 1949 to work at Brown Shoe Co. Besides working at the shoe factory, Louis ran the Gulf Filling Station. He also helped start and ran the Crawford County Opera and he had Potter's Small Engine Repair until his retirement. He was preceded in death by one son, Denny Glen; one daughter, Donna Roberts; one great granddaughter, Alicia Johnson; six brothers-in-law, Jessie, Herman, Willard, John, Clyde Sellers and Homer Day; two sisters-in-law, Gladene Day and Wilma Abrams. Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Daphyne, of the home; three daughters, Debbie Smith and husband Charles of Steelville, Missouri, Linda Brand and husband Tom of Hazelwood, Missouri and Sandy Johnson of Steelville, Missouri; nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Five sisters, Jean Dotson of Pevely, Missouri, Helen Alexander of Florida, Charlotte Orchard and husband Steve of Van Buren, Missouri, Eleanor Blunkall of Virginia and Berty Pruitt and husband Bobby of Eminence. Two brothers-in-law, Homer Sellers and wife Betty of Steelville, Missouri and Norman Hoffart of Pevely; two sisters-in-law, Nina Day and husband Roman of Steelville, Missouri and Gladys Terry of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Louis Potter were conducted Friday, September 15, 2006 in the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home with Revs. Jerry Beers and Kevin Farr officiating. Special songs of "When No One Stands Alone," "Consider the Lillies," and "Go Rest High on the Mountain" were sung by Bruce Turnbough and Jerry Beers. Serving as casket bearers were Chris and Bart Johnson, Russ and Jim Brand, Andy and Rob Harris, Matt and Luke Smith, with committal prayers and burial in the Steelville Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri. The family was cared for by the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville, Missouri. Arlene Shelton Arlene Shelton (nee French) of Cuba, Missouri and formerly of St. Louis, Missouri, was born August 19, 1924 at Avalon Mississippi to the union of Guy C. French and Zora (nee Pittman) French and left from this life on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at Cuba, Missouri at the age of 82 years and 23 days. Arlene worked as a nurse's aid for 27 years at Alexian Brothers Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She always enjoyed "the spice of life" to the fullest. She is preceded in death by her parents Guy and Zora and a host of other relatives and friends. Those who are left to mourn her passing from this life are her children, Joe L. Givens, Pat Givens, Stanley Shelton, Guy L. Shelton, Betty Jean Bloomingberg, Shirlene Carter, Linda Shelton and Judy Shelton; many grandchildren; great grandchildren; relatives and friends. Private graveside services were held at Kinder Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri. The family is being served by Britton Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri.
