Mary B. Basford
Mary B. Basford (birth name “Maria” but known by family and friends as
either “Mary” or “Marie”), of St. James, Missouri was born March 24, 1922
to Charles and Elizabeth (Piff) Nadler in East St. Louis, Illinois and
passed away September 15, 2009 at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center
in Rolla, Missouri at the age of 87.
On October 15, 1942 she married Charles Berkley Basford, Sr.
Shortly after her marriage to Charles, she obeyed the gospel and baptized in
Virginia where her husband was temporarily stationed with the United States
Navy during World War II.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Elizabeth Nadler;
husband, Charles; sister, Emma Kitchen; brother, Rudy Nadler, grandson,
Charles Berkley Basford III.
She is survived by three children, Charles Berkley Basford Jr. and wife
Sylvia of St. Louis, Missouri, Mary Elizabeth Wools and husband Michael H.
of St. James, Missouri and David Scott Basford of St. James, Missouri;
sister, Elizabeth Hellwig of St. Louis, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Hilda
Nadler of St. Louis, Missouri and Bertie Basford of Cuba, Missouri; five
grandchildren, Melissa Cable and husband Lee of Springfield, Missouri,
Michael C. Wools and wife Randi of Nixa, Missouri, Matthew Wools of
St. James, Missouri, Kellie Basford and Brooke Basford, both of St. Louis,
Missouri; four great grandchildren, Logan Wools, Lakyn Wools, and
Alexandria Wools, all of Nixa, Missouri and Sidney Cable, of Springfield,
Missouri; other relatives and friends.
Visitation was Saturday, September 19, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at the
James & Gahr Mortuary, St. James, Missouri.
Funeral service was Sunday, September 20, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the
St. James Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary with Lynn Huggins
officiating.
Interment was at the Oak Grove Cemetery near St. James.

James Edward Carlton
James Edward Carlton was born October 24, 1934 in Edgar Springs, Missouri
and passed away September 17, 2009 in Rolla, Missouri at the age of 74
years.
James was united in marriage to Shirley F. Hutchison on June 27, 1953 in
Arkansas and to this union three children were born.
He attended Full Gospel Mission in Rolla.
He is survived by his father, Roy Edward Carlton of Rolla, Missouri; wife,
Shirley F. Carlton of Rolla, Missouri; sons, James Carlton Jr. and wife
Sherry of Gilbert, Arizona and Billy Gene Carlton and wife Diann of Peoria,
Arizona; daughter, Cheryl Renee Muller-Carlton of Denver, Colorado; brothers,
Donald Carlton and wife Norma of Metropolis, Illinois, Charles Eugene Carlton
and wife Betty of Dundee, Illinois and Ray Carlton and wife Lavonda of
St. Louis, Missouri; sisters, Lillian Delisle and husband Bill of Cuba,
Missouri and Juanita Crites of Elgin, Illinois; seven grandchildren; other
relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mamie Eva Carlton and brother David
Carlton.
Visitation was held on Saturday, September 19, 2009 from 1:30-3 p.m. at
James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla, Missouri.
Funeral service was held Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the
James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla, Missouri with Rev. Donald Carlton
officiating.

Charles Dale Davis
Charles Dale Davis was born November 16, 1945, in Boss, Missouri and passed
away September 15, 2009, in Rolla, Missouri, at the age of 63 years.
Chuck was united in marriage to Billie Kay Brown on July 3, 1982.
He owned and operated D&K Truck Brokerage in Rolla for the last 28 years.
He loved animals and people. Chuck made friends with everyone he met. He
loved his ole blue Peterbilt truck, hunting, horseback riding, and his
horses.
He was preceded in death by his father, Hadley Davis; mother, Joyce
Halbrook; step father, Arnette Halbrook; infant daughter, Alisha Davis;
sister, Arlene Davis and father-in-law, William Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Billie Kay Davis of Rolla, Missouri; brothers,
Dennis Halbrook and wife Glenda of Steelville, Missouri and Rev. William
Davis and wife Dutch of Independence, Kansas; close cousin, Larry Wahner
and wife Dixie of DeSoto, Missouri; mother-in-law, Freida E. Brown of Rolla,
Missouri; sister-in-law, Peggy Rieger of Olathe, Kansas; other relatives
and friends.
Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, September 18, 2009 at
James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla, Missouri.
Services with full military honors were held on Saturday, September 19,
at James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla, Missouri, with Pastor Paul “Tutor” Pryor
officiating.
All arrangements are under the direction of James & Gahr Mortuary of
Rolla, Missouri.
Richard Fowler
Richard Fowler of St. James, Missouri was born June 12, 1957 in St. Louis,
Missouri, to Virgil and Hazel (Quick) Fowler and passed away suddenly,
Saturday September 19, 2009 in Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 52 years.
On August 4, 1987 in St. James, Missouri, he was united to Betty Richards.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffery Griesler and one brother,
Charles Virgil Fowler Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Fowler of the home in St. James, Missouri;
sons, Kevin Fowler and wife April and Timothy and wife Joni, both of Salina,
Kansas; daughter, Chrisy Griesler of Kansas City, Missouri; brother, William
Fowler of Washington, Missouri; sisters, Rose Mary Butrick and Ellen Chambers,
both of Dixon, Missouri; 12 grandchildren; mother and father-in-law, Lloyd
and Roberta Richards of St. James, Missouri.
Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. on Monday September 21, 2009 at the Jones
Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri.

the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri with Steve Lederle officiating.

Robert E. Harper
Robert E. Harper of De Soto, Missouri was born August 16, 1940 in St. Louis,
Missouri and passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2009 in Crystal City,
Missouri.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Harper (nee Amelung) of De Soto,
Missouri; daughter, Vickey Harper of St. Louis, Missouri; step son, Michael
(Jaime) Viehland of De Soto, Missouri; brothers, George (Betty) Harper of
St. Peters, Missouri, Kenneth (Keta) Harper of Lawrence, Georgia and Jimmy
(Kaorie) Harper of Melbourne, Florida; sisters, Judy (Pat) Hughes of
Satellite Beach, Florida and Joanie (Jesse) Adkins of Shiloh, Illinois;
grandsons, Shawn and Zachary Viehland of De Soto, Missouri; special friend,
Payton; other relatives and friends.

Elmer Lee Jones
Elmer Lee Jones, of High Ridge, Missouri, formerly of Steelville, Missouri,
was born in St. Louis, Missouri on October 10, 1935, to Elmer and Sarah
Jones and passed away at his home on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at the age
of 73 years.
On June 29, 1957, he married Juanita Widener, who preceded him in death in
2001.
Elmer was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1954-56. He also
served as a deputy sheriff for Jefferson County and worked for the Fenton
Police Department.
He graduated from the Missouri Highway Patrol Academy in Rolla, Missouri
and served as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts from 1973-77. He retired as
a security guard for St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri
He is survived by his stepson, Mark A. Widener of St. Louis, Missouri;
three sons, Jeffery Jones and wife Haesun of Edgar Springs, Missouri,
Matthew W. Jones of St. Louis, Missouri and Robert M. Jones of High Ridge,
Missouri; two daughters, Lorna K. Cowan of Cedar Hill, Missouri and
Sherry A. Braun and husband John of Bourbon, Missouri; two sisters, Nancy
Kallambah and husband Kenneth of St. Louis, Missouri and Carol Sullivan of
Salem, Missouri; 14 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; other relatives
and friends.
A visitation was held from 9-11 a.m. on Monday, September 21 2009 at the
Null & Son Funeral Home, Rolla, Missouri, followed by a graveside service
with full military honors at 11:30 a.m. in the Renaud Cemetery in Edgar
Springs.
All arrangements are under the direction of the Null & Son Funeral Home in
Rolla, Missouri.
Gail L. Kile
Gail L. Kile of St. James, Missouri was born May 24, 1956 in Blytheville,
Arkansas to Victor and Floy (Sutton) Kirchner and passed away Saturday,
September 12, 2009 at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla,
Missouri at the age of 53 years.
Gail was united in marriage to James Kile I on December 29, 1979.
Gail enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, tending to the lawn and her
yard, auctions and treasure hunting for those hard to find little mementos.
She loved spending time with family and friends; and was a genuine people
person who never met a stranger. She was passionate about animals and the
time she spent at the Humane Society in St. James was of great joy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Floy Kirchner.
She is survived by her husband, James Kile I of the home; children, James
Kile II of Duncanville, Texas, Jason Kile of Dallas, Texas, Julie Mathison
and husband Jason, of Warrenton, Missouri and Vince Kile and wife Shaunna
of Dallas Texas; 10 grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Visitation was Tuesday, September 15, from noon until service time at 2 p.m.
Funeral service was Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at the St. James Chapel of
the James & Gahr Mortuary with Reverend Lindy Hardwick officiating.
Interment was in the St. James Cemetery.

Odie W. Mash
Odie W. Mash of Cahokia, Illinois formerly of Cuba, Missouri was born to
Ervin and Eunice (Wright) Mash on November 25, 1928 at Jakes Prairie,
Missouri and passed away Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Cahokia, Illinois at
the age of 80 years.
Odie was a retiree of General Motors Corp. and Honorably served his country
in the U.S. Army during WWII. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and painting.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Eunice (Wright) Mash; one
sister, Verlee Gross and one brother, Ervin Edsel Mash.
He is survived by two sons, Mark Mash of Paris, Tennessee and Bill and wife
Donna Mash of Independence, Missouri; one step-son, Arthur Junkerman of Cuba,
Missouri; three grandchildren, Jackie, Megan and Kyle; three step grand-
children, Michelle, Tiffany and Nica; one brother, Ken and wife Flossie Mash
of Farmington, Missouri; other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. at the
Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri.
Funeral was held on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Britton
Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri with Pastor Gary Mace, officiating.
Interment followed at Licklider Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri.

Robert Leo Mikel
Robert Leo Mikel, known to most as Bob, of St. Clair, Missouri was born in
Campbell, Missouri on August 25, 1929 to J.B. Mikel and Belvia Mikel (nee
Abernathy) and passed away on September 14, 2009 at the age of 80 years and
20 days.
On June 23, 1951 he was united in marriage to Waldine Leavice Moore and
10 children were born.
Bob was a devoted Christian and current member of St. Clair Southern Baptist
Church in St. Clair, Missouri. For 21 years he had been a member of Antioch
Baptist Church in Chesterfield, Missouri where he had been ordained as a
Deacon in 1979.
During his working years Bob had been employed by General Motors in
St. Louis, Missouri, retiring after 22 years of service. He was also a
retiree of United Auto Workers Local 25.
He was an outgoing man and loved spending time outdoors. He loved baseball
and for many years served as a baseball coach. Hunting and fishing were
other hobbies and he was an avid gardener. He was a handyman that could fix
anything and was a talented musician, often entertaining the family as he
played his guitar and sang.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.B. and Belvia Mikel; two
brothers, Ivan Mikel and Leroy Mikel and two sisters, Laura Rutledge and
Anges Ormsby.
He is survived by his wife, Waldine Mikel of St. Clair, Missouri; five sons,
Gary Mikel and wife Bonnie of St. Peters, Missouri, Terry Mikel of Fenton,
Missouri, Allen “Bret” Mikel and wife Lynn of St. Peters, Missouri, Jeffrey
Mikel and wife Jennifer of Broadlands, Virginia and David Halsell and wife
Teresa of Bakersfield, California; five daughters, Charlotte Daleen and
husband Ted of Montgomery City, Missouri, Janet Haffer and husband Bob of
Sullivan, Missouri, Julie Wissmann and husband Ron of Ballwin, Missouri,
Valerie “Alesia” Webb and husband Mike of O’Fallon, Missouri and Tamara Knox
and husband Jim of Foristell, Missouri; two brothers, Billy Mikel and wife

Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair, Missouri.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at
the Antioch Baptist Church in Chesterfield, Missouri with the Rev. Bill
Savage and the Rev. Ralph Green officiating.
Interment in the Antioch Baptist Cemetery, Chesterfield, Missouri.

Sandra C. Mueller
Sandra C. Mueller of Sullivan, Missouri, was born on November 27, 1946 at
Boissevan, Virginia to Charles and Lillian (Tobias) Ruble and passed away
Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at the age of 62 years.
She was raised there as a young girl and had made her home in various parts
of the country, eventually coming to Missouri in 2000. Sandy was employed
for a time at the Cuba Manor and later worked at Life Care Center of
Sullivan. She was fond of hiking, fishing and traveling and was an avid
reader. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Sullivan
Chapter 105 where she held the position of Electa star point.
On February 7, 2001 she was united in marriage to Jerome A. Mueller at the
Sullivan Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Lillian Ruble and a
son, Donald Davis.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry; four sons, Justin Mueller of Bourbon,
Missouri, Dean Mueller of Killeen, Texas, Joseph Mueller of Moscow Mills,
Missouri and Christopher Palmer of Steelville, Missouri; three daughters,
Donna Michelle Phillips of Cuba, Missouri, Janet Payne of Spring Bluff,
Missouri and Amber Weakley of Sullivan, Missouri; one brother, Charles Ruble
of the state of Pennsylvania; 19 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; other
relatives and friends.
Visitation was from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2009 from the
Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
Memorial funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday,
September 12, 2009 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with the
Sullivan Chapter of the Eastern Star and Justin Mueller officiating.
Interment was private.

Marjorie Ruth Nieto
Marjorie Ruth Nieto of Steelville, Missouri was born January 28, 1936 to
Gorman and Myrtle (Coon) Conner in French Camp, California and passed away
Monday, September 14, 2009 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan, Missouri
at the age of 73 years.
Marjorie was a big fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and loved to
watch their games. She also enjoyed her flower gardens, collecting rocks and
loved her little dog, Tillie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gorman and Myrtle Conner; one
brother, Gene Connor; one sister, Nita Simmons; and one grand-daughter,
Cristina Balderrama.
She is survived by one daughter, Camille Looby and husband Dan of Steelville,
Missouri; two sons, Tony Conner of Washington state and Jeff Conner and wife
Donna of California state; two sisters, Mae Smith and Lenore Langum of Reno,
Nevada; seven grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Private services will be held at a later date.

Steelville, Missouri.
Claude Christopher Phelps, Jr.
Claude Christopher Phelps, Jr. was born September 19, 1934 in Yancy Mills,
Missouri to Claude Christopher and Ruth Evelyn (Baker) Phelps Sr. and passed
away Sunday, September 20, 2009 in the Missouri Veterans Home in St. James,
Missouri.
Claude served his country in the United States Navy from 1952-1955 serving
in Korea, the United Nations and China. After his service with the Navy he
then enlisted in the Navel Reserves for many years.
He was united in marriage to Lorene “Marie” Laird on June 15, 1957. Claude
and Marie shared 52 years of marriage and four children. He enjoyed fishing,
hunting, and time spent with family and friends. Claude was retired from
General Motors and was very proud being a member of the United Auto Workers
Union. He loved practical jokes (as long as he was the one pulling them) and
Bingo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Ruth Phelps.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene “Marie” Phelps, of Foley, Missouri;
children, Connie Marler and friend Jerry Booth of Lakewood, Washington, Rita
Stroud and friend Jerry Akins of Foley, Missouri, Scott Phelps and wife
Yvette of Foristel, Missouri, Ronda Phelps and friend Tommie Sanderson of
St. Louis, Missouri; brother, Ronnie Phelps and wife Norma of Rolla, Missouri;
sisters, Loretta Finley and husband Jack of Vida, Missouri, Phyllis Phillips
and husband Jim of Vida, Missouri; eight grandchildren; six great grand-
children; two great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at James & Gahr Mortuary in
Rolla, Missouri from 6-8 p.m.
Funeral service was Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Rolla
Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary with Ron Smith officiating. Interment

Jerry Dean Spurgeon
Jerry Dean Spurgeon of St. James, Missouri was born July 9, 1941, in High
Gate, Missouri to Jewell Melvin “Butch” and Lucille (Sherman) Lortz and
passed away Friday, September 18, 2009, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in
St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 68 years.
Jerry served his country in the U.S. Air Force, and retired from Yellow
Freight Company having received the Million Mile award with no accidents.
He is survived by his son, Robert Dean Spurgeon of St. James, Missouri;
daughters, Paula Marin and husband Larry of Rolla, Missouri and Toni Strait
and husband Scott of St. James, Missouri; one sister, Betty Coleman of
St. Louis, Missouri; four grandchildren, Chris, Daniel, Nathan and Mark;
other relatives and friends.
Visitation was from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 2009, at the Jones
Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri.
Funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday September 21, 2009, at the
Jones Funeral Home in St. James with Aaron Jeffers officiating. Music was
provided by Don Chambers.
Burial was in the family plot at the High Gate Cemetery.
All arrangements are under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home in
St. James, Missouri.
Bernadene “Bernie” Stubblefield
W. Bernadene “Bernie” Stubblefield was born Friday, October 23, 1932 at
Rolla, Missouri to William and Myrtle (nee Watkins) Williams and passed
away Monday, September 14, 2009 at Cuba, Missouri at the age of 76 years,
10 months and 22 days.
Bernie was united in marriage to Bob R. Stubblefield on May 10, 1952 at
Cuba, Missouri and to this union two sons were born.
Bernie worked as an assembly line worker for Hussman Refrigeration Company
in St. Louis, Missouri before she retired in 1989. She was a member of
Trinity Presbyterian Church of Cuba and she enjoyed reading, gardening,
fishing and movies. But what she enjoyed most was spending time with her
family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Myrtle Williams; son,
Dale Stubblefield; other relatives and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Stubblefield of the home; son Daniel
and wife Karen Stubblefield of St. Charles, Missouri; two grandchildren,
Samantha and Nicholas; one brother, Billy and wife Betty Williams of Columbia,
Illinois; sisters-in-law, Maggie and husband Don Shelton of Poplar, Missouri
and Ginger and husband Ed Windle of Cuba, Missouri; brother-in-law, Jack and
wife Mary Stubblefield of Phoenix, Arizona; other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held Wednesday, September 16, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. at the
Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri.
Funeral service was at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at the
Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri with the Rev. Pat Gruber officiating.

Interment followed at Kinder Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri.

Bennie J. Woods
Bennie J. Woods of Sullivan, Missouri was born on January 25, 1941 at
Leasburg, Missouri to William Everett and Josephine Emma (Brown) Woods and
was a life-long resident of the Leasburg and Sullivan areas and passed away
at his home on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the age of 68 years.
On September 30, 1961 he was united in marriage to Virginia B. Miller at
Sullivan, Missouri and to this union a son was born.
Bennie was a truck driver for MFA Propane for several years but his main
pride was part-time farming on his spread just north of town. He was a
charter member of New Testament Baptist Church of Sullivan. He enjoyed
playing his guitar and singing in recent years.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia of the family home; one son, Kenny
Woods and wife Janet of Steelville, Missouri; brother, Walter Woods of
Sullivan; sister, Sue King of Leasburg, Missouri; five grandchildren, Cory,
Tashia, Chase, Treavor and Trista Woods; one step granddaughter, Alina Brown
and husband Chris; one step great grandson, Malachi Lane; other relatives
and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2009
from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor John Ripley
officiating.
Interment was in Buffalo Cemetery.

Missouri.
