MO Local Obituaries for the Week of September 28, 2000 Larry Lee Roper Larry Lee Roper was born Wednesday, September 12, 1951, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a son of Beulah (nee Edgar) and the late David Hartley Roper. He entered eternal rest Friday, September 1, 2000, at the Gibbs Care Center, Steelville, Mo., at the age of 48 years, 11 months and 19 days. He spent four years in the United States Air Force, serving as a fireman, and received an honorable discharge, November 2, 1973, at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ricky Roper. Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his loving mother, Beulah Moline of Steelville, Mo.; two daughters, Stephanie Miller of Bell Flower, Mo. and Stacy Roper of Cuba, Mo.; three sisters, Carol and husband Ed Carr, Mary and husband Rob Cummings, also of Steelville, Janice and husband Dan Snodgrass of Vienna, Mo.; two brothers, David Roper of Fulton, Mo. and Harold Roper of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Sister-in-law Marie Roper of Steelville, Mo. six grandchildren; aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Larry Lee Roper lay in state after 9:00 a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2000, at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2000 in the Britton Chapel with Dr. Cardis Bryan officiating. Committal prayers and interment were in Freeman Cemetery, Cherryville, Mo. Serving as pallbearers were Ed Carr, Jack Hemby, Rusty Lea, Bryan Owens, Bo Roper and Dan Snodgrass. Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Mildred Brand Cardwell Mildred Brand Cardwell, nee Brand was born December 29, 1919, in Steelville, Mo. to the union of James H. and Irene O. Brand. She passed away September 12, 2000 in Los Alamitos, California at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 17 days. She entered the University of Missouri at Cape Girardeau, and received her degree in education from the University of Missouri at Columbia. She taught in rural Steelville, Mo. for two years before moving on to teach in Independence, Mo., Roswell, New Mexico, and finally in Long Beach, California. She loved teaching first graders. She is survived by her loving husband, Grover Cardwell of Long Beach, California; one daughter, Diana Dakini, also known as Mary Susan Cardwell of Long Beach, California; and by one brother Glenn Brand and wife Janet of Steelville, Mo. Graveside funeral services were held September 15, 2000 at 2:30 p.m. in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Cypress, California, with Rev. Ken McMillan officiating. There was a reading by Sue Cardwell, with comforting music by soloist, Leslie Tinnaro, and Janet Green playing oboe. Catherine L. Nienhaus Catherine L. George Tomazi George Tomazi of Cuba, Mo. was born on April 30, 1911 in Zirovee, Czechoslovakia to the union of John Tomazi and Anna Tomazi nee Cisko and passed away on September 17, 2000 at the age of 89 years, 4 months and 17 days. On December 1, 1934 George was united in marriage to Sophia Bogovich at Madison, Illinois. Three sons, George, Edward and Robert were born to this union. George and Sophia were happily married until she preceded him in death on March 16, 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Joe Tomazi and one sister, Anna Rodgers. George was an active member of the Cuba Masonic Lodge No. 312 and was Past Master. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the First Presbyterian Church of Cuba, Mo. Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his three sons George D. Tomazi; Edward A. Tomazi and Robert Tomazi; two brothers John Tomazi and Andrew Tomazi; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. George was a devoted husband, loving father, brother, grandfather, good friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. George Tomazi was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. where Masonic Services were held on Wednesday, September 20, 2000 at 7:30 p.m. by the Cuba Masonic Lodge No. 312. Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 21, 2000 at the First Presbyterian Church of Cuba, Mo. with Rev. Heide Hackman officiating. Interment was in the Sunset Hill Memorial Estates at Edwardsville, Illinois. All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Anna Jewell Duncan Anna Jewell Duncan nee Anderson of Cuba, Mo. was born on September 12, 1927 at Potosi, Mo. to the union of Albert Anderson and Mary Anderson nee Marler and passed away on September 20, 2000 at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center of Rolla, Mo. at the age of 73 years and 8 days. On June 28, 1945 Anna was united in marriage to James B. Duncan in St. Louis, Mo., one son, James, and five daughters, Fern, Neva, Karen, Joyce and Rhonda were born to this union. Anna and James were happily married until he preceded her in death on May 17, 1980. Anna was a retired practical nurse and was a member of the Church of God. She devoted her life to raising her family. Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her devoted children, James N. Duncan and wife Mary, Fern Stroup and husband William, Neva Cassidy and husband Dave, Karen Weems, Joyce Corbett and husband David, Rhonda Hibbitts and husband Tom; one brother Rev. Harlond Anderson and wife Bonnie; one sister Evelyn Russell and husband Carl; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Anna was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Anna Jewell Duncan was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. on Friday, September 22, 2000. Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 23, 2000 at the Covenant Praise Church of God of Cuba, Mo. at 12 noon with Rev. Mark Smith, Rev. Roger Taber and Rev. A. M. Dorman officiating. Interment was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery of Sullivan, Mo.
