She was born on January 17, 1917 in Doniphan, Missouri. She was married to John Kenneth Brown for 61 years and he preceded her in death on November 6, 1994. They were members of the Free Will Baptist Church of Cuba, Missouri. Viola is survived by her son, Bob Brown and Pat Cookson, her daughter, Ruth Ann Clendenin and husband Ronnie Clendenin; three brothers Cecil Ponder and wife Shirley, Harold Mikesell and wife Betty, Jerry Mikesell; sister-in-law Betty Laughlin; cousin Rick Stevens and wife Debbie and son Devon; grandchildren, Tim Brown and wife Eileen, Susan Scherer and husband Doug, Brenda Wolf, Sheila Adair and husband Wesley, Michelle Long and friend Wayne Kelly and granddaughter, Maria. There are 16 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren, also dear friends, John Worthington, Dorothy Brown and Pam Garrison. Viola Brown will be in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 after 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2004 at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Naylor Masonic Cemetery, Naylor, Missouri on Friday, October 15, 2004 at 11 a.m. Rev. Steve Schultz officiating. All arrangements under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri. James Lee Hanks James Lee Hanks was born Wednesday, May 5, 1937 at Steelville, Missouri, a son of the late Frances Hanks nee Hopkins and Earl Woodrow Hanks. He entered eternal rest on Thursday, September 30, 2004, at his home near Steelville, Missouri at the age of 67 years 4 months and 25 days. On October 11, 1958, Jim was united in marriage to Violet Klein by Rev. Nichols, a pastor of Steelville Assembly of God. They've been blessed with three lovely daughters, Tawnya, Dalynn and Teresa and over 45 wonderful years together. Jim served in the U.S. Army from August 9, 1955 to July 28, 1958 when he was honorably discharged; 20 months of his enlistment was spent in Germany. He earned the rank of SP4-E4(T). He received the European Occupational Award and a Good Conduct Medal for his service and was a member of the Army Reserves until 1964. Jim accepted our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as his personal savior and became a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He was employed as a mechanic for 21 years for the Crawford County Highway Department. His skills as a mechanic also were a service to family and friends. Among his many interests in life were enjoying fishing and rebuilding of wooden clocks. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Hanks and one brother-in-law, Howard Klein. Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his loving wife, Violet Hanks of the home in Steelville, Missouri; three devoted daughters, Tawyna Hassler and husband Brian of Jefferson City, Missouri, Dalynnn Dew and husband Jerry of Steelville, Missouri, and Teresa Booker and husband Ricky of Cook Station, Missouri. Six grandchildren, Zach Hassler, Jamie Hanks, Lindsey Hassler, Kelsie Booker, Lacey Dew and John Booker; six brothers, Eugene Hanks of Hill City, Kansas, Earl Hanks and wife Joyce of Steelville, Missouri, Jerry Hanks and wife Jettie of St. James, Missouri, Delmar Hanks and wife Kay of Sikeston, Missouri, Gary Hanks and wife Sherrie of Lohman, Missouri, and Michael Hanks of Camdenton, Missouri. Three sisters, Sharon Thomas and husband Larry of Linn, Missouri, Pat Hanks and Debbie Lorraine, both of Steelville, Missouri; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Alma Hanks of Tebbetts, Missouri, Henrietta and Leroy Ness of Union, Missouri, Paula and Wes Sagers of LeClaire, Iowa, and David Klein of Cook Station, Missouri; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends who will fondly remember and truly miss him. James Lee Hanks lay in state from 4-8 p.m. Friday, October 1, 2004 at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2004 at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Steelville, Missouri with Rev. Don Wissmann officiating, assisted by brother-in-law Leroy Ness. Musical selections were provided by daughters Teresa Booker and Dalynn Dew, Rev. Jerry Beers and pianist Iris Moreland. Committal prayers and interment were in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri. Serving as pallbearers were his brothers, Eugene, Earl, Jerry, Delmar, Gary and Michael Hanks. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Radis Setzer, Albert Halbert, Brian Hassler, Jerry Dew and Ricky Booker. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Mabel Lorraine Oxendine Mabel Lorraine Oxendine was born Tuesday, January 27, 1920, at Lenox, Missouri, a daughter of the late Maude Jane Stites (nee Stroud) and Walter J. Stites. She entered eternal rest Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at the Gibbs Care Center, Steelville, Missouri, at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 8 days. On November 1, 1933 at Steelville, Missouri, Justice of the Peace Easterday, united Lorraine in marriage to James R. Oxendine. Three children, one son Don, and two daughters, Ruby and Maudie, were born to this union. Jim preceded her in death December 30, 1965. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, Minford Stites and Winford Stites, one sister Bernice Stites and one brother-in-law Julius Swyers. Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her devoted children, Don Oxendine and wife Helen of Steelville, Missouri, Ruby Kies and husband Joe of New Mexico, Maudie Casarotto and special friend Dan Holman of St. James, Missouri; her sister, Opal Swyers of Steelville, Missouri. Six grandchildren, Felica (Stacy) Griswold of Provo, Utah, Rocky Kies of Cannon City, Colorado, Jimmy Kies of Clanton, Alabama, Tammy (late Bobby) Irvin of Steelville, Missouri, Karen (Kenny) Koch, Mike (Jolanda) Casarotto of Lebanon, Missouri; 13 great grandchildren, one great great grandson; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
