MO Local Obituaries for the Week of October 17, 2007 Nina Edith Maples Nina Edith Maples, nee Burr, of Cuba, Missouri, was born Saturday, May 11, 1929 in Glovers Gap, West Virginia to Edward Glenn Burr and Nancy J. Gump Burr. She passed away in her home on Thursday, October 4, 2007 at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 23 days. Nina married Jack King on April 11, 1952 and to this union four children were born. She worked most of her adult life as a cook in food service. She had been employed at The Rendezvous Bar in Cuba, Missouri at one time. After Jack’s passing she later married Joe Maples on June 9, 1984. Nina’s hobbies were spending time on the river, swimming and camping. She was preceded in death by her husbands; brother, Edward Glenn Burr Jr., son, Jerry Wayne King, daughter, Joy E. McWhorter, brother-in-law, Carl Peck, sons-in-law, Gary L. Shirah and Chester Wylie and close friend, Tom Kent. She is survived by her daughters, Penny Wylie-Shirah of Salem, Missouri and Jackie (Michael) Kirkland of Monticello, Florida; sister, Stella Peck of Baltimore, Maryland; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A memorial service was Sunday, October 14, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri with Pastor Billy Stack officiating. The music “The Rose,” “The Dance” and “In the Garden” was sung by Sheri Stack, Justin and Melaine Roark. All arrangements were under the direction of the Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri. Sarah Kathryn Massey Sarah Kathryn Massey (nee Nichols) of Rocky Mount, Missouri, formerly of Steelville, Missouri, was born October 20, 1915 to Charles Thomas and Francis Isabelle (Karns) Nichols and passed away on Friday, October 5, 2007 at the age of 91. On May 18, 1935 she was united in marriage to John Eugene Massey who preceded her in death on May 6, 2005. Kathryn had worked in the family shoe store for many years and later worked as the librarian in the Steelville Public Schools. She was a charter member of the First Assembly of God Church in Steelville and a faithful Sunday school teacher and church secretary for many years. She enjoyed watching St. Louis Cardinal baseball games, quilting, cooking, fishing, visiting with family and friends, but most of all loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Earl Nichols and wife Fern, Wilford Nichols and wife Jesse, Tom Nichols and wife Geneva; sisters, Ethel Eaton and husband Zelmer and Vivian Nichols. She is survived by three sons, Rev. Don Massey and wife Pat of Rocky Mount, Missouri, Paul Massey and wife Carol of Wentzville, Missouri and David Massey and wife Nancy of Lake Ozark, Missouri; two brothers-in-law, Rev. Joe Massey of Steelville, Missouri, and Rev. Darrel Massey and wife Becky of Rocky Mount, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, Selma Adcock of Lamar, Missouri and Louise Massey of Kansas City, Missouri. Sixteen grandchildren, William and wife Delores, Jerry and wife Debby, Aaron and wife Shelly, Sarah, Susan and husband Trent, Diane and husband Eddie, Laura and husband Marti, Karen and husband Casey, Donald and wife Shella, Brian and wife Janet, Brad and wife Melinda, Tammy and husband Allan, Lisa and husband Danny, Stacey, Matthew and wife Stephanie and Terry and wife Janice; 35 great grand- children; two great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Monday, October 8, 2007 at the Steelville Assembly of God Church in Steelville, Missouri with Rev. Roger Perkin and Rev. Jerry Beers officiating. Special taped music of “He Saw Me” by the Talley Trio was played. “It Is Well With My Soul” was sung by Rob and Kay Housewright, Joyce Vaughn and Jerry Beers with Sharon Hardecke accompanying. “What a Day it Will Be” was sung by Paul Massey. A eulogy was given by Don Massey. Closing the service was taped music of “Take Up My Cross” by John and Kathryn Massey. Serving as casket bearers were Aaron Massey, Donald Massey, Jerry Hanson, Bill Hanson, Brian Massey and Bradley Massey with committal prayers and burial in the Steelville Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville, Missouri. Helen W. Mezines Helen W. Mezines, nee Hinson, was born Sunday, February 11, 1923 in E. St. Louis, Illinois to Albert Hinson and Alma Lucy Froesi Hinson. She passed away on Friday, October 4, 2007 in Missouri Baptist Medical Center, St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 24 days. Helen married Alexander S. Mezines on August 1, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri and to this union three children were born. She was a professional secretary in the insurance industry and then worked several years as a supervisor in the print shop of the Jewish Community Center, St. Louis, Missouri. She later was a greeter at the Cuba Hardees. She loved her grandkids and great grandkids. She enjoyed cooking, working with flowers and decorating her home. She was a member of the Steelville First Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Iva (Cody) Skelton, Evelyn (Paul) Skelton, Margaret Davis and Hazel (Joseph) Hutfless; brothers-in-law, Richard Boese and Andrew Mezines; infant brother-in-law and infant brother. (Kehner) Midyett in Steelville, Missouri and passed away on Monday, October 8, 2007 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 76. Lorraine had worked over 50 years as a seamstress in St. Louis, Missouri. She had attended Soulard Baptist Church for many years. William Oliver Vawter William Oliver Vawter of Sullivan Missouri was born on Monday, April 16, 1923 in Kings Mill, Arkansas to James Monroe Vawter and Georgianna Miller Vawter. He passed away in his home on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 23 days. Bill married Elsie Alene Goodman on September 19, 1942 in Hardy, Arkansas and to this union seven children were born. Before retirement, Bill worked as a carpenter in commercial construction and was a member of the Carpenters Local Union. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, Bourbon, Missouri where he as active in soul winning. He also enjoyed playing the guitar, violin, mandolin, banjo and singing. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl, infant Harland and Eugene (Velma) Vawter; son, Mark Vawter; half-sister, Naomi Vawter and brother -in-law, Marlton Snow. He is survived by his wife of 65 years of the home; children, Lindell (Bonnie) Vawter of Charlotte, North Carolina, Harold Vawter of Sullivan, Missouri, Michael (Judy) Vawter of Sattelite Beach, Florida, Keith (Debbie) Vawter of Belle, Missouri, Debbie (Jimmy)  Anderson of Stanton, Missouri, Kenny (Paula) Vawter of Sullivan, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Julie Vawter of St. Clair, Missouri; brother, Leon (Edith) Vawter of California; sisters-in-law, Jean Vawter of Highland, Arkansas, Ola Snow of Lonedell, Missouri; and brother- in-law, Stanley (Kay) Goodman of Cedar Hill, Missouri; 16 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
