MO Local Obituaries for the Week updated Oct. 20, 2005 Mary Lucille Dyer Mary Lucille Dyer passed away at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri on Sunday, October 9, 2005. She was 78 years of age. Mary was born on December 22, 1926 to her parents, George Riley Watson and Effie C. (Perry) Watson. She was united in marriage to Norman Willard Dyer and to this union six children were born. Mary was employed at E.H. Berry Manufacturing in St. Louis, Missouri for 15 years. She was a spot welder. Mary was a very good cook and enjoyed cooking. Mary is survived by two daughters, Jo Ann Tucker of Phoenix, Arizona and Rose Marie Bergner of Bourbon, Missouri; three sons, Jimmie Lee Dyer and wife of High Ridge, Missouri, Paul Edward Kinworthy of Phoenix, Arizona and Willard Eugene Dyer of Sullivan, Missouri; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding her in death are her parents, George Watson on September 9, 1980 and Effie (Perry) Watson on March 22, 1974; her husband Norman on December 9, 1991; one infant son David Wayne Dyer on December 5, 1969; one brother William E. French; three sisters Jessie Mae Thompson, Dorothy Helen Coulter and Effie Eliza Bridgett. Visitation was held Tuesday, October 11, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Jones Funeral Home Chapel in St. James, Missouri with Judy Brown officiating. Burial in the family plot in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Dillard, Missouri. All arrangements were under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri. Maude Naomi Hoffmeister Maude Naomi Hoffmeister passed away Saturday, October 15, 2005 at the Cuba Manor Nursing Home in Cuba, Missouri. She was 96 years of age. Maude was born July 2, 1909 in St. James, Missouri, the daughter of the late Fred Howard and Lutisha Matlock Keeney. On January 8, 1928, Maude was united in marriage to Oscar W. Hoffmeister. To this union two sons were born. Maude Hoffmeister is survived by one son, Oscar W. Hoffmeister Jr. and his wife Jean of Cuba, Missouri; granddaughter, Terry Campbell and husband David Sr. of St. James, Missouri. Great grandchildren: Christy Campbell, Heather Shasserree and husband Hank, David Campbell Jr. and Beth Terrill. Great great grandchildren: Dakota Skouby, Wilson McDaniel, Hayley Porter, Mackenzie Portell, Hannah Shasserre, Bailey Terrill, Macy Terrill and Annie Terrill; along with sister-in-law, Vinita Mosher of St. James, Missouri. Maude Hoffmeister is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Oscar W. Hoffmeister who entered into rest August 21, 1994; one son Hersel L. Hoffmeister; one brother, Fred Kenney and two sisters, Mabel Coppedge and Thelma Prebianca. Maude Hoffmeister was in state at 10 a.m. Monday, October 17, 2005 at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri. Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2005 at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James with Brother Rick Mosher officiating. Music was provided by Lori Garver, vocalist and June Edwards at the organ. Pallbearers were: David Campbell Sr., David Campbell Jr., Heather Shasserre and Beth Terill. Burial was in the family plot at the St. James Cemetery, St. James, Missouri. Arrangements were under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri. Michael Melvin Owens Michael Melvin Owens was born Friday, January 18, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri, a son of the late Morris Owens and Helen (Ziegler) Owens. He entered eternal rest Friday, October 7, 2005, in St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 53 years, 9 months and 19 days. In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by one sister, Joann Owens. Among those who remain to mourn his passing are two daughters, Lacey Allen Owens of St. Louis, Missouri and Skylar Owens-Clark of Steelville, Missouri. Also remaining are three brothers, Richard Owens and James Owens both of St. Louis, Missouri and David Owens of Steelville, Missouri and one sister Rose Derrickson of Chillicothe, Missouri, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Memorial services for Michael Melvin Owens were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2005 in the Britton Chapel, Steelville, Missouri. Pastor Judy Owens Jeffery officiating. Musical selections were provided by Andy Derrickson. Internment will be at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Britton Bros. Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Birdie V. Sappington Birdie V. Sappington of Bourbon, Missouri passed away Thursday, October 6, 2005 at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 27 days. Mrs. Sappington was a life-long resident of the Bourbon area, having been born at Cherry Valley, Missouri on November 9, 1914 to the late Louis and Docia (Richardson) Mathews. On June 10, 1935 she was married to Farris E. Sappington at Steelville, Missouri and to this union three children were born. Birdie was known as a woman of great faith whose main devotion in life was that of her church and family. She was church secretary at Crossroads Baptist Church and cemetery for over 40 years. She would always tell the troubled, downhearted or sorrowful to "Take It To The Lord In Prayer." Her commitment to the Lord will last as a testimony to all who knew her. She is survived by one son, Paul Sappington and wife Diane of Bourbon, Missouri; one daughter, Darlene Voss and husband William of Florissant, Missouri; a daughter-in-law, Norma Sappington of St. Charles, Missouri; two brothers, Elasco Mathews of Cuba, Missouri and Leonard Mathews of Springfield, Missouri; two sisters, Lucille Lada of Bourbon and Mabel Randleman of Douglas, Georgia; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Sappington was preceded in death by her husband in June of 2001. She was also preceded in death by a son, Farris (Bud) Sappington, a grandson, Joseph Voss, a brother, Guy Samuel Mathews and a sister, Olivia Sanders. Visitation was held from 4:30-9 p.m. Friday evening from the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon and on Saturday at 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at the church. Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m., Saturday, October 8, 2005 from Crossroads Baptist Church, Leasburg, Missouri, with Pastor Bobby Higgins officiating. Interment was in Crossroads Cemetery. Winston Wilburn Trask Winston Trask, 77, of Sweet Home, Oregon died Friday, September 23, 2005 at home surrounded by his family and friends after the long illness. He was the youngest of eight children born to Spain and Clay (Halbert) Trask in Steelville, Missouri. His mother died when he was young and the family moved to Oregon, settling in Sweet Home. He enlisted in the military serving with the Air Force during World War II as a military policeman, stationed on the Philippine Islands. After returning home, he started work with the Santiam Logging Company. He met Jean J. Wilkening and they married in Vancouver, Washington in 1952. He continued to work in the woods as a shovel operator for Duncan & Moore Logging Company and then with McCollum before becoming disabled and retiring in 1979. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, life member and charter member as well as past ex-alter ruler of the Sweet Home Elks, member of Sweet Home VFW and past president of the Santiam Sams RV group. His favorite enjoyments in life were hunting, fishing, camping, spending time with his family and friends, and sitting and playing slots and solitaire on the computer. He is survived by wife Jean and daughters Sandy Van Cleave and her husband, John and Deanna Trask of Sweet home; son Bruce Trask and his wife Vanessa, of Lebanon; sister Alice Palmer of Sweet Home; brother Gene Trask; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, and brothers-in-law, Opal Harman and husband Sam, Thelma Burke and husband Joe; sisters Oma Hicks and Alma Trask (infant). Brothers, Arthur Marvin and Spurgeon Trask (as child). A memorial service and celebration of life was held at Sweet Home Elks. A private interment was at the Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home, Oregon. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements. Barbara Ann Verman Barbara Ann Verman (nee Rebel) of Cuba, Missouri was born on May 30, 1947 in Pittsburg, PA to the union of Robert and Martha Jane Rebel and passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at Phelps County Regional Medical Center at the age of 58 years 4 month and l3 days. On January 1, 1999 Barbara was united in marriage to C. Allen Verman in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Barbara was the house manager for Stubblefield Care Center in Cuba, Missouri. Those who survive to mourn her passing from life are husband Allen Verman, one son David E. Ellinger, one step son William A. and wife Sarah Verman, two step daughters Annette Copeland, Sarah and husband Jason Eaklor, her parents Robert and Martha Jane Rebel, five step grandchildren; LaDonna, Cierra, C.J. and Desire Eaklor and Kimberly Foster, one sister Kathleen and three brothers Bob, Dave and Jim Rebel and a host of other relatives and friends. Barbara was a wonderful loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, daughter in law, sister in law, aunt and good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Anna Marie Wolf Anna Marie Wolf nee Altom was born on Sunday, August 22, 1937 in East St. Louis, Illinois to the late Robert Luther Altom and Meekie Jo Lents Altom and departed this life Saturday, October 8, 2005 at her home in Steelville, Missouri at the age of 68 years 1 month and 17 days. Anna lived in Bangor, Michigan for 28 years before moving to Steelville seven years ago. She stayed home and raised her children and later worked as a caregiver in private homes. Anna loved books, games and puzzles and traveling all over the United States with her family. Anna accepted the Lord many years ago and was a member of the Rivers of Life Church in Steelville, Missouri. Anna was preceded in death by her parents, one infant son and one sister Lydia Sexton. Those who remain to mourn her passing are her loving daughters Vicki Flannagan and husband Scott of Bangor, Michigan, Janet McFarland of St. Louis, Missouri and Lynn Wolf of Attleboro, Massachusetts; two brothers William Altom and wife Dixie of Steelville, Missouri and Robert Altom and wife Lillian of Benton Harbor, Michigan; one sister Ruth Neeley and husband Wayne of Park Hills, Missouri; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends, all who will fondly remember and sadly miss Anna Marie Altom Wolf. A private funeral service was held Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at the Hutson Funeral Chapel in Steelville, Missouri with Pastor Jared Gillam officiating. Burial was in the City of Dexter Cemetery in Dexter, Missouri. All arrangements were under the care of the Huston Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri.
