MO Local Obituaries for the Week of October 20, 2011 Irene Ackerman Irene Ackerman of Sullivan, Missouri was born at Springfield, Missouri on March 13, 1927 to William Elmer and Mamie Pearl (Morin) Henry and passed away at her home on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the age of 84 years. She grew up and was raised in the Cuba, Missouri area. On February 15, 1947 she was united in marriage to Ralph Ackerman and to this union three children were born. Irene was known as a personable woman who was giving and kind. She had a good sense of humor and always had a smile on her face.  She was a dedicated homemaker who enjoyed going to lunch with friends, shopping and silk flower arranging. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mamie Henry; husband, Ralph Ackerman; two grandchildren, William Jacob and Jennifer Marie. She is survived by two sons, Bill Ackerman and wife Mary of Sullivan, Missouri and Kim (Tiny) Ackerman of Sullivan; daughter, Shari Ryerson Ackerman of Sullivan, Missouri; three sisters, Cathleen Thompson of the State of Arizona; Pauline Waggener of Monument, Colorado and Alene McFarren of Monument, Colorado; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. A gathering was held on Friday, October 14, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. There was no funeral service. Albert Monro Halbert Albert Monro Halbert, 84, of Steelville, Missouri was born October 6, 1927 in Courtois, Missouri to Warfel and Dora Causey Halbert and passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 84 years. On February 7, 1953 in Arkansas, he was united in marriage to Erma Cassidy. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1946-1947. Albert worked most of his life as a heavy equipment operator in the 1940’s for the Crawford Co. Road District, in the 1950’s he worked for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in California, Trinidad Asphalt Co. in Missouri, from 1968 to 1976 for Martin Construction Co. in Crawford Co., in the early 1980’s building the nuclear power plant in Fulton, and from 1984 to 1998 when he retired from the Crawford Co. Road District. He always liked to keep busy and could be found mowing Westover Cemetery or his yard. In his spare time, he loved to fish and have coffee time at the Spare Rib or Whitetail. Most of all he loved being around his family and telling wonderful stories. Albert had a strong belief in the Christian faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Warfel and Dora Halbert; his wife, Erma in 1981; two sisters, Esther Donal and husband Tom, and Cleo King; brothers-in-law, Leonard Cassidy and wife Ruth, Oscar Cassidy, Herman Cassidy and wife Edith, Fred Cassidy and wife Bernice, Lawrence Cassidy and wife Joyce, Lee Cassidy, Glen Cassidy and wife Uldene and Everett James; sister-in-law, Marie Tucker and husband Harvey. Prelude and postlude were played by Wanda Ransom. Special music of “Amazing Grace” and “Near the Cross” was sung by Anita Donal. Committal prayer and burial with full military honors were in the Freeman Cemetery at Cherryville, Missouri. Clifford Hedrick of Steelville, Missouri was born on Friday, May 19, 1911 in Goodwater, Missouri to Frank Tedder and Louisa Jane Hedrick and passed away at Cuba Manor on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the age of 100 years, 4 months and 19 days. Clifford married Grace Denny on May 10, 1929. After the depression, his first job was working for the WPA, building roads, he later went to work for himself doing odd jobs. He did everything from raising cattle and pigs to hauling scrap metal. He went on to own a scrap metal business and eventually sold it. In 1943, he worked two years in a defense plant located in St. Louis that manufactured war materials for WWII. In 1935, he made a profession of faith and began preaching the next year. He was ordained in April 1937 at the Viburnum Missionary Baptist Church. He continued to preach for 55 years pastoring four churches: Viburnum, Berryman, Courtois and Lost Creek Baptist. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Louisa Hedrick and wife, Grace Denny Hedrick. He is survived by his special friend, Ruby Miller of Steelville, Missouri; niece Rita Lindemann of St. James, Missouri; special friends Melvin (Letha) Roberts of Steelville, Missouri and Liz Simpson of Cuba, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Gerald Melbourne Poor Gerald Melbourne Poor of Rolla, Missouri was born on April 2, 1927 to Otto and Gracie Lee (Skaggs) Poor and passed away at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center on Monday, October 10, 2011 at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 8 days. He was united in marriage to Mildred Marie Ragan on May 29, 1950 in Arkansas. Gerald entered the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and was on the USS Indianapolis, which sunk July 30, 1945 by Japanese submarines.  About 900 of the 1,196 crewmen survived the initial impact.  By the time they were rescued four days later a little more than 300 survived.  Gerald was one of the survivors and at the time of his passing, was the only Missouri survivor of the greatest sea disaster in its history.  He often visited the local schools and told of his experience in the water, fighting, exposure, dehydration and shark attacks. On October 16, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Snodgrass Cemetery near Vienna, Missouri, the U.S. Navy will honor his heroic efforts. He was preceded in death is his wife, Mildred Marie Poor on November 14, 2005; his parents, Otto and Gracie Poor; four brothers, Rowe Earl Poor, Buell Lee Poor, Thomas Barton Poor and Johnny Quinton Poor; one sister, Allene Chambers and one brother-in-law, John Horbitz. He is survived by one son, Homer Poor and wife Wilma of Hannibal, Missouri; one daughter, Thelma Bailey and husband Jerry of Rolla, Missouri; two sisters, Billy Ann Vastnik and husband William of Peru, Illinois and Margaret Horbitz of St. Peters, Missouri; seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Memorial service was conducted on Saturday, October 15, at 7 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home in St. James, Missouri. Graveside services with full military honors were conducted on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Snodgrass Cemetery. Tammy Renee Price Tammy Renee Price nee LeStarge of Steelville, Missouri was born on Thursday, July 13, 1972 to Robert and Marlene Herd LeStarge in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at the age of 39 years, 2 months and 26 days. Tammy worked a few years as a nurses aid at Cuba Manor and later at Gibbs Care Center in Steelville, Missouri. She liked animals especially horses. She enjoyed the outdoors working in her garden and flowers. Tammy loved her family and was a wonderful homemaker. She even adored other children in the neighborhood and claimed them as hers. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert LeStarge. She is survived by her children, Kris Owens of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Cari Crocker, Lea Owens, Samantha Owens, Brittany Price and Gregory Price, Jr., all of Steelville, Missouri; mother, Marlene LeStarge of St. Paul, Minnesota; brothers, Jay (Tammy) LeStarge of St. Paul, Minnesota, Marc LeStarge of Ft. Wilma married Homer “DeWayne” Sellers on May 15, 2007 in St. James, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, Haston and Lola Luna. Norman Edward Stricklin Norman Edward Stricklin of Bourbon, Missouri formerly of Steelville, Missouri was born on Friday, October 21, 1927 in Iron County at Bixby, Missouri to Leslie Oliver and Ethel Pyatt Stricklin and passed away Saturday, October 15, 2011 at the Meramec Nursing Center, Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 24 days. Norman was born legally blind, but was a hard worker in his younger days. He would cut cordwood and haul hay when he could get someone to drive his old truck and help work for him. He later was a long time resident of Redwood Manor Care Center in Bourbon, Missouri before moving to Meramec Nursing Center a few months ago. He was happy as long as he had his candy, pipe and tobacco. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Ethel Stricklin; two infant sisters; four brothers, James, Cletis, Lawrence and Cecil Stricklin; and sister-in-law, Betty Lou Stricklin. He is survived by his brothers, Roman (Barbara) Stricklin and Jessie Stricklin, all of Steelville, Missouri and sister-in-law, Betty Jean Stricklin of Cuba, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Visitation is Friday, October 21, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. and funeral service on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri with Rev. Daniel Levi Weiskopf Daniel Levi Weiskopf of Bourbon, Missouri was born on March 27, 1987 at Washington, Missouri and passed away on Friday, October 7, 2011 at the age of 24 years, 6 months and 10 days. He was a 2005 graduate of Bourbon High School.  While in school, he was a member of the National Honor Society.  He later attended Rolla Technical Institute where he studied mechanics.  He was known as a brilliant young man who loved cars and was a loyal friend and honest person. He is survived by his fiancée, Hannah Broderick and son Kemper of the family home; mother, Sherry Weiskopf; grandparents, Gilbert and Norma Weiskopf of Sullivan, Missouri; uncle, Tim Weiskopf; cousins, Bryan and Dillon; other relatives and friends.
