MO Local Obituaries for the Week of October 22, 2003 Charles Gray Ariola Charles Gray Ariola of Steelville, Mo. was born January 17, 1931 in Newport, Arkansas to the late Monte Zuma Ariola and Georgia Raye Vines Ariola and departed this life Friday, October 10, 2003 at the Washington County Hospital in Potosi, Mo. at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 23 days. Charles was united in marriage to Joan Elaine Pollock on September 19, 1952 in High Ridge, Mo. and to this union six children were born. Charles served his Country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. Charles had his own air conditioning and refrigeration business before retiring. Charles accepted the Lord many years ago and was of the Pentecostal Faith. He was a former NRA member and enjoyed working in his shop, target shooting, hunting, fishing, and watching TV. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter Dianna Lynn Ariola; one brother Monte Zuma Ariola, Jr., and one brother-in-law William Harold Pollock, Jr. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his loving wife Joan Ariola of the home in Steelville, Mo.; two sons Charles Gray Ariola, Jr. and wife Molly of Ash Flat, Arkansas; Keith Allen Ariola of Steelville, Mo.; three daughters Linda Maureen Poole and husband Bill of Zephyr Hill, Florida; Tammy Ariola of Spring Hill, Florida; and Kimberly Dawn Ariola of Illinois. Twelve grand- children, two great grandchildren, three brothers Monte Raye Ariola of West Plains, Mo.; Jack Ariola and wife June of Crawfordville, Florida; and Joseph Elmer Ariola and wife Dorothy of Steelville, Mo.; and one sister Juanita Joy Madrid of Steelville, Mo.; and sister-in-law Geraldine Mary Brown and husband Edward of California; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends, all who will fondly remember and sadly miss Charles Gray Ariola. Charles was cremated with a private family service to follow. All arrangements under the direction of the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville, Mo. William H. Hayes William Harvey Hayes was born in Mineral Point, Missouri on February 10, 1927 to John Harvey Hayes and Bessie Salenia Essmeyer Hayes. He passed away at Cuba Manor on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at the age of 76 years. William served his country honorably in the United States Navy during the end of World War II. He later was a Commercial Electrician and worked in the Cuba area for several years. His hobbies were cooking and spending time with his brothers. William was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers Joe Hayes, Jake Ferguson, Roger Ferguson and James Owens. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his sister Barbara Ellen Hayes Misseracco of St. Louis, Mo.; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. William was cremated and no memorial services were held. All arrangements were under the direction of Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Mo. Elmer Denton Jones Elmer Denton Jones was born Sunday, June 30, 1918, in Orth, Texas, a son to James Norman Jones and Minnie Belle (Blue) Jones. He entered eternal rest Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 14 days. Elmer was united in marriage to Bonnie (Asher) Jones. They had four wonderful years together. In addition to his father and mother, Elmer was preceded in death by one step-son, Glen Evans and one sister, Martha Lou. Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his wife Bonnie Jones of Steelville, Missouri; two step-sons, Johnny Evans and Edward Cox; three step-daughters, Debra Turnbough and husband Leon, Diana Bewig, and Dorthea Cox. Two brothers, R. F. Jones, of California and Lethal Jones of Texas. Three sisters, Avis Bowman, of California, Norma Lee Wood and Thelma Sue Adkisson, of Texas. Nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, nine great great grand- children, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Memorial services were held 10 a.m. Friday, October 17, 2003, at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri with Rev. Gene Thrasher officiating. Eulogy was given by Debra Turnbough. Committal prayers and interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Florence Elizabeth May Florence Elizabeth May nee Clover was born Tuesday, February 19, 1918 in Leasburg, Missouri to the late John George Clover and departed this life Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at the Gibbs Care Center Nursing Home in Steelville, Missouri at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 25 days. Florence married Adrain Mervel May on October 12, 1940 in Steelville, Missouri and to this union two daughters were born. Florence was a lifelong resident of Crawford County; she was very active in community service throughout her life. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of the VFW Post #6479 where she served as president for many years and was known to many as the poppy lady selling poppies to everyone who crossed her path. She was a member of the Steelville Extension Club, Women's Bowling League, she bowled on leagues in Cuba, Sullivan, and Steelville, winning numerous trophies, she bowled on the television show Bowling For Dollars, she served as adminstrix for several elderly people down through the years. Florence worked for L. B. Price for many years selling household items from her car on her routes throughout Crawford County. Florence accepted the Lord many years ago and was formerly a member of the Steelville Presbyterian Church, and a current member of the Potosi Presbyterian Church. Florence was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Adrain, two daughters, Patricia Ann Payne, and Audrey Lee Stacy, five brothers Albert Stout, Charles Stout, Thomas Stout, John Clover, and Bill Clover. Those who remain to mourn her passing are her loving grandchildren Jerry Payne and wife Susan of Charleston, Illinois; Mary Locke and husband Brad of Ellisville, Mo.; Angie Simerda and husband Frank of O'Fallon, Mo.; James Payne and wife Anita of Houston, Texas; John Stacy and wife Lois of Salem, Mo.; Sandy South and husband Jeff of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Michael Stacy and wife Anna of Bunker, Mo.; and Mary Mae Stacy of O'Fallon, Mo.; her son-in-laws William "Bill" Payne and wife Sharon of Steelville, Mo.; and Oscar Stacy of Bunker, Mo.; one brother Percy Clover of Raleigh, North Carolina; and sister-in-law Georgia Clover of Steelville, Mo.; nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends all who will sadly miss and fondly remember Florence Elizabeth May. Jerry and James Payne, Mary Locke and Edna Slape sang "It Is Well With My Soul," "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus," and "He Is Lord," accompanied by Valerie Hutson on piano. Angie Simerda and Mary Mae Stacy read Eulogies. Her eight grandchildren honored her as pallbearers, and her great-grandchildren handed out poppies to all present at the service.Burial in the Steelville Cemetery, Steelville, Mo. Robert Eugene McMillen Robert Eugene McMillen was born February 8, 1930 in St. Louis to the union of Spurgeon Monroe McMillen and Eura Katherine McMillen nee Halbert. He passed from this life on October 16, 2003 near his home in Steelville at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 8 days. Bob served our country in the Navy during the Korean War and received several medals. During his life he worked at Maramec Spring Park, Missouri Highway Department and Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District. On April 29, 1966 he was united in marriage to Gloria Jean Mouser. They enjoyed 37 years of marriage together. In addition to his parents Bob was preceeded in death by an infant sister, brother-in-law Bill Knapp and mother and father-in-law Carmel and Emma Mouser. He is survived by his wife, Jean McMillen, of the home; two sons, David McMillen of St. Louis and Marty McMillen of Steelville. Four grandchildren, Angie McMillen DeQuette, Wendy McMillen Allen, Mitzi McMillen all of St. Louis; Kasey McMillen of Steelville; and four great grandchildren. His sister Dorothy Knapp and niece Cathy Crawford of St. Louis. Sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda Sutton and husband Bill of Foley and Carmel Mouser and wife Cindy of Cuba. Special cousin JoAnn Taylor and husband Ronald of St. Louis and favored friend Charles Grotzinger and wife Anita of St. Louis. Bob was a dedicated sportsmen and passed that love onto his sons and grandson. He treasured his family and his relationship with Kevin DeRennaux, Lance Cottrell, and Kyle Brand, whom he thought of as sons. A few years ago while sitting in his tree stand, during a deeply troubled time he called upon the Lord and accepted him as his Savior. He attended United Baptist Church. He made the choice to deliver his body to science. A memorial service was held at the United Baptist Church, near Steelville on October 18, 2003 with Elder Berlie Turnbough officiating. Memorial stones will be placed at Westover Cemetery and Pleasant Point Cemetery, both of rural Steelville. James David Quisenberry James David Quisenberry was born Saturday, September 2, 1933, a son of the late Odie Quisenberry and Virginia (Foreman) Quisenberry. He departed this life Sunday, October 12, 2003, at his home in Viburnum, Missouri, at the age of 70 years, 1 month and 10 days. Jim served his country in the United States Army from April 1954 to February 1956. He was a member of the 547th Engineers and received the rank of SP2 (T) December 22, 1955. On December 23, 1964 at Chinatown, Illinois, Jim was united in marriage to Carolyn Medley. One son was born to this union. They have enjoyed over 38 years together, making their home for the past 19 years in Viburnum, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife Carolyn of the home; one son James Darren Quisenberry and wife Brenda of St. James, Missouri; one sister, Betty Elliott of Louis Port, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Justin and Tristan Quisenberry, two step-grandchildren, Drenda and Briana; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Winford and Eula Medley, JoAnn Redford all of Bixby, Missouri, Clifton and Betty Medley of Belleview, Missouri; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, who will remember Jim as a person who enjoyed going to church, spending time with his friends at the coffee shop and watching NASCAR races. James David Quisenberry lay in state 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2003, in the Britton Chapel with Rev. Paul Davis and Rev. Tutor Pryor officiating. Musical selections were provided by Johnny Setzer. Committal prayers and interment were in Upper Indian Creek Cemetery. Full military honors were provided by the Missouri Military Funeral Honors Reserve Detachment "Hotel Team" from Salem, Missouri, at graveside with firing party, flag folding, presentation of the flag to the family, and Taps was provided by Mr. Harry Eaton of Sullivan, Missouri. Serving as pallbearers were Charley Young, Clifton Medley, Winford Medley, Bobby Quisenberry, Justin Quisenberry, and Chuck Radford. Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Katherine Summers Katherine Summers nee Mullen, daughter of the late John Francis Mullen and Maurgarite (Neron) Mullen was born Tuesday, April 30, 1912 in Crawford County, Missouri. Katherine entered into eternal rest on Monday, October 13, 2003, at her home in rural Steelville, Missouri. at the age of 91 years, 5 months and 13 days. Katherine was united in marriage to Clarence "Buss" Summers in Rolla, Missouri on May 20, 1930. They enjoyed over 72 years of marriage until his death on October 6, 2002. From this union, one son and four daughters were born. In addition to her parents and husband, Katherine was preceded in death by her grandson Johnny Summers; sister and brother-in-law Julia and Cecil Westover; brothers and sisters-in-law Tom and Edna Mae Mullen, Joe and Blanche Mullen, Charles and Augusta Mullen, Lawrence and Imagene Mullen, and Harrison and Dorothy Mullen; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Ray and Evanna "Eliza" Summers, William Summers, Jim and Iva Summers, Maude Summers, and Hugh Summers. Katherine Summers lay in state 3-9 p.m. Thursday, October 16, 2003, at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday, October 17, 2003 at the Steelville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jerry Beers officiating. Musical selections were provided by vocalist Danny Gruver and Jill McWilliams and organist Deloris Bell. Committal prayers and interment were in the Pinnell Cemetery, rural Steelville, Missouri. Serving as pallbearers were Jerry Bryan, Terry Bryan, Mark R. Mitchell, Timothy E. Harlow, Andrew Baumgarth, James McInnis, Gary Mullen and Tim Mullen.
