Harrison Franklin Brown
Harrison Franklin Brown was born near Cherryville, Mo., Tuesday, December
4, 1923, to Charles T. Brown and Frances D. (Ives) Brown. He departed this
life Thursday, October 11, 2001, in St. Louis, Mo., at the age of 77 years,
10 months and 7 days.
He served his country in the Untied States Army during World War II, as a
rifleman in the 480th infantry. His overseas battles and campaigns were in
Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe and Normandy. His
decorations and citations included a Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster,
5 Bronze stars for the above campaigns and was entitled to wear American
Theatre Campaign Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign
Ribbon, Victory Ribbon and 2 Overseas Bars. He was honorably discharged
after serving his country from March 12, 1943 until November 14, 1945.
April 15, 1950, in Arkansas, Harrison was united in marriage to Helen
Pepper. Two daughters were born to this union. They have enjoyed over
fifty-one years together.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna
and husband Santa Hutson, Mabel and husband John Green; five brothers,
Howard, Walter, Ed, Harry Brown and wife Delpha; brothers-in-law and
sisters-in-law, Murlene and Bill Riley, Pat and Dean White, Rodney Pepper,
Tom Pepper and Sidney Pepper.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife Helen
Brown of the home in St. Louis, Mo. Their two daughters, Teresa Ann Brown
and Tammi Lynn Marrah and husband Tim also of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister,
Mercide and husband James Quinton of Steelville, Mo.; four sisters-in-law,
Virginia (Howard) Brown of Davisville, Mo., Nellie (Ed) Brown of
Cherryville, Mo., Vickie (Sidney) Pepper and Betty (Tom) Pepper, both of
St. Louis, Mo.; three grandchildren, Ryan Slankard, Katie Marrah and
Cynthia Marrah all of St. Louis, Mo.; nieces, nephews, cousins, other
relatives and friends.
Harrison Franklin Brown lay in state 3-8 p.m. Sunday, October 14, 2001, at
the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were
held 11 a.m. Monday, October 15, 2001, in the Britton Chapel with Rev. Bob
Coleman officiating. A medley of traditional hymns were sung by Bob and
Carol Coleman with guitar accompaniment by Bob.
Committal prayers and interment were in Martin Cemetery, Cherryville, Mo.
Honoring Harrison as pallbearers were Harrison G. Brown, Roger Brown, Terry
Brown, Tim Marrah, Ryan Slankard, and Gary White.
Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville,
Mo.
Virginia Dodson
Virginia Dodson, 74, of Steelville, died October 3, 2001, at Mineral Area
Regional Medical Center. She was born February 21, 1927, at Bismarck to the
late Grover and Eunice M. 'Layton' Callahan.
Preceded in death by granddaughter, Dawn Gibson; sisters: Elizabeth
Callahan, Shelba Nelson; brothers: Brian Lee Callahan, George Callahan,
Willard Callahan.
Survived by children: Mary 'Langley' Gibson, Park Hills, Karen Ashlock,
Steelville, Patsy Callahan, Farmington, Harold E. Dodson, Bonne Terre, Pam
Baker, Desloge, Larry Lee Dodson, Cuba; 13 grandchildren; 20
great-grandchildren; brothers: Grover Callahan, Texas, Tommy Callahan, St.
Louis; sisters: Patsy Dix, Viburnum, Bertha Lightfoot, North Carolina;
nieces, nephews, other friends and relatives.
Visitation was held at the Horton-Wampler Funeral Home. Services were held
1 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2001 at the Horton-Wampler Chapel with Rev.
White officiating. Burial in Bismarck Masonic Cemetery.
Susie "Sue" Elizabeth Howald
Susie Elizabeth Howald nee Summers of Steelville, Mo., was born Friday,
August 13, 1920, at Steelville, Mo., a daughter of the late Irvin Glover
Summers, and Artie (Trask) Summers.
She entered into eternal rest Tuesday, October 16, 2001, at the Missouri
Baptist Medical Center, Sullivan, Mo., at the age of 81 years, 2 months and
3 days.
In a quiet, candle-lighted double-ring ceremony April 19, 1948, at the
First Baptist Church, Steelville, Mo., Sue was united in marriage to Arthur
J. Howald by Rev. J. P. Licklider. Both Arthur and Sue were born and
brought up in Steelville, attended public and high school in Steelville.
Sue graduated as valedictorian of her class. They had one son, John Kent
Howald, and one daughter, Katherine Sue Howald born to this union. They
have enjoyed fifty-three years together.
Sue worked as county supervisor for the food program and later for fifteen
years for the Family Services food stamp program. She was also employed
over ten years for Lay Bonded Abstract Office. She was a member of First
Baptist Church of Steelville. She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir,
served as church clerk and also church treasurer. She was active in PTA,
Meramec Extension Club, Martha & Mary OES Chapter 364, and other civic
groups.
In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her daughter,
Katherine Sue Kenagy, and two brothers-in-law, Jesse J. Carroll and James
Allen Taylor and a sister-in-law, Miriam Howald.
Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her loving husband Arthur
J. Howald of the home; one son Kent Howald and wife Betty Ann; two sisters,
Barbara Carroll and Elaine Taylor, all of Steelville, Mo.; brother-in-law,
Edwin W. Howald of St. Louis, Mo.; five grandchildren, Trenton Kenagy of
Kansas City, Mo., Jonathan Howald of Orlando, Florida, Sean Kenagy of San
Diego, California, David Howald of West Point, New York, and Allison Kenagy
of Warrensburg, Mo.; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many
friends who will remember her as a poet and a very loving, caring person,
who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Susie Elizabeth Howald lay in state 4-8 p.m., Friday, October 19, 2001, at
the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. She also lay in state
after 10 a.m., Saturday, October 20, 2001, at the First Baptist Church,
Steelville, Mo., where funeral services were held at 1 p.m., with Pastor
Cardis Bryan officiating. Traditional hymns were provided by vocalist Bryan
Taylor and Cindy Gladden and pianist Jan Weisel.
Committal prayers and interment were in Steelville Cemetery, Steelville,
Mo. Serving as pallbearers were deacons of First Baptist Church, Jim Brand,
Charles Chipman, Wilber Grayson, Rob Housewright, Steve Stice and Floyd
Reed.
Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville,
Mo.
Beverly M. Kraus
Beverly Mae Kraus, 73, passed away Tuesday, October 16, at Oakwood Villa
Nursing home after a long illness.
Beverly was born in Eau Claire on April 12, 1928 to Vernon and Thelma
Winchester and later adopted by Emil and Cora Wingad of Eau Claire. On
April 7, 1946 she married Garland L. Johnson (deceased). They had four
children during their marriage.
Beverly was employed at Fabritech in Eau Claire and then at Cray Research
for several years. In 1981, she moved to Colorado where she married Richard
K. Kraus. She then relocated to California where she worked at Hughes
Aircraft, continuing her career as an electronical assembler. She then
relocated with her daughter to Cuba, Mo. She retired and returned to Eau
Claire in 1988.
During her earlier years in Eau Claire, Beverly was an active member of the
E.C. Girl Scout Association as a troop leader and day camp director.
Beverly is survived by her four children: Gary W. Johnson, Cincinnati,
Ohio; Rebecca M. Berg (Gerald), Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Bonnilyn (Bonnie) R.
Bond, Cuba, Missouri; and Elizabeth J. Tellock (David), Omro, Wisconsin.
Also, nine grandchildren: Wayne Johnson, Stacy Anderson, Allison Rupp,
Emily Koehler, Richard Johnson, Beverly Siler, Tina Holbrook, Todd Tellock,
Theresa Tellock; ten great-grandchildren. Beverly is also survived by a
brother, Keith Hutchinson, Bentonville, Arkansas; a sister, Charlotte
(Donald) Roberts, Eau Claire, Wisconsin; and severl nieces and nephews.
Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Krause, both natural
parents and both adoptive parents, a brother Warren Wingad, and one
great-granddaughter Brittany Conway.
Funeral services were at Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home, Eau Claire on
Friday, October 19 at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Joel Hoelter officiating.
Interment was at the St. John's Cemetery in Eau Claire.
James Virgil Quinton
James Virgil Quinton of Steelville, Mo., was born Wednesday, August 28,
1918, at Cherryvalley, Mo., a son of the late Jerry Vardelman Quinton and
Ida Mae (Treet) Quinton. He entered eternal rest Monday, October 15, 2001,
at the Veterans Memorial Hospital, Warrensburg, Mo., at the age of 83
years, 1 month and 17 days.
On Christmas Eve, December 24, 1941, at the home of Rev. Sam L. Roper in
Steelville, Mo., James was united in marriage to Mercide Brown, daughter of
Charles T. Brown and Frances D. (Ives) Brown. One son, Richard, and one
daughter, Joan, were born to this union. They have enjoyed over fifty-nine
years together.
In his younger days he loved to go camping, hunting and fishing with his
family on the Huzzah.
Jim served his country during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the
United States Army, with a tour of duty in Europe, and Africa. He enlisted
January 20, 1941 and was honorably discharged October 19, 1945. After Jim
came home from the service they made their home in St. Louis where Mercide
had lived while he was away. Jim worked at Woodward Printing Company until
the company closed, and later worked for N. L. Industries, Inc. until he
retired. In 1975 they bought a retirement home a few miles south of
Steelville on Highway 19 where they lived.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers-in-law and
sisters-in-law, Bill and Emma Quinton, Lavada and Daryl Brown, Howard,
Walter, Ed, Harold, Harrison, Harry and Delpha Brown, Edna and Santa
Hutson, Mabel and John Green.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife Mercide
Quinton of the home; one son Richard Quinton of St. Peters, Mo.; one
daughter Joan Martin of Nixa, Mo.; one grandson Richard Quinton, Jr. of St.
Charles, Mo.; three granddaughters, Daphne, Melanie and Kelly Quinton also
of St. Charles, Mo.; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Brown of Davisville,
Mo., Nellie Brown of Cherryville, Mo. and Helen Brown of St. Louis, Mo.;
nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held
11 a.m. Saturday, October 20, 2001, in the Britton Chapel with Rev.
Harrison Brown officiating. Musical selections were provided by Bob and
Carol Coleman.
Committal prayers and interment were in Martin Cemetery, Cherryville, Mo.
Serving as pallbearers were Terry Brown, Jack Brown, Bob Coleman, Harold
Green, Tim Marrah, Rich Quinton, Ryan Slankard and Jon Trout.
Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville,
Mo.
Mary E. Richardson
Mary E. Richardson of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Monday, October 15,
2001 at the age of 87 years.
Mary was born on May 19, 1914 at Anthonies Mill, Missouri to the late John
Lee and Effie (Bouse) Isgrigs. In 1931 she was joined in marriage to Lytle
Marion Summers, and to this union three children were born. In 1947 Mr.
Summers preceded Mary in death. In 1948 she was joined in marriage to
Johnie Richardson, and to this union two children were born. Mary and
Johnie lived in Bourbon, Missouri until their health failed, and then moved
to the Meramec Nursing Center in Sullivan. Mary professed her faith in
Christ, and was a faithful witness to all around her. She loved her home,
and was a very caring person, especially providing much care and concern
for her husband, Johnie. In her younger years, she worked at the Paramount
Cap Factory in Bourbon, Missouri.
She is survived by her husband, Johnie C. Richardson of Sullivan; two sons,
Harold Summers of Sullivan and Rick Richardson of Bourbon, Missouri; two
daughters, Betty Ivie and husband, Marvin, of Cuba, Missouri and Sue Bunton
of Bourbon, Missouri; one step-son, Leroy Richardson and wife, Bonnie, of
St. Peters, Missouri.
Eleven grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, three great great
grandchildren, two step grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and
friends.
In addition to those previously mentioned, Mary was preceded in death by a
son, Willian Summers, a step-son, James Richardson, three brothers, Jasper
Isgrigs and his wife, Vallie, Luther Isgrigs and Harry Isgrigs, four
half-brothers, Alphie and Archie Coffman, and Jesse and Jack Summers, and
one sister, Lucy Merritt and her husband, Raymond.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2001
from the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon with Pastor Marvin Ivie
officiating. Interment was in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Steelville,
Missouri.
Velma B. West
Velma B. West, 89, of Steelville, Missouri, formerly of Jefferson City,
died Monday, October 15, 2001, at St. Mary's Health Center. She was born
July 11, 1912, in Westover, Missouri, a daughter of Leslie and Pearl Eaton
Branson. She was a graduate of Steelville High School in Steelville,
Missouri and attended Business School in Phoenix, Arizona.
She was married in 1929 in Steelville, Missouri to Derwood N. Blount, who
preceded her in death in 1970. In 1973 she was married to Harry M. Jonas,
he preceded her in death five weeks later. In 1976 she was married to I.
Leroy West of Jefferson City, who preceded her in death in 1988.
She was a medical secretary for Dr. A.R. Baumann in Steelville, Missouri
from 1950-1973. She was a member of Concord Baptist Church in Jefferson
City and the First Baptist Church in Steelville, Missouri. She was a
lifetime member of the Martha & Mary Chapter of the Order of the Eastern
Star #364 in Steelville, Missouri.
She is survived by a son: Robert L. Blount and wife Patricia of Houston,
Texas; a step-son, Eric B. West and wife Cristine of Jefferson City; a
step-daughter, Andrea West Stoltenberg of St. Louis, Missouri.
Two grandchildren: Jane Anne and husband Dr. Tom Vickroy of Gainesville,
Florida and John R. Blount of Houston, Texas; three step-grandchildren:
Tiffanie West of Kansas City, Missouri; Bo West and Andrea West of
Jefferson City; two great-grandchildren: Kyle Vickroy and Kevin Vickroy
both of Gainesville, Florida. She was preceded in death by a grandson:
Barry L. Blount in 1953.
A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2001 at the
Concord Baptist Church in Jefferson City, with Dr. Monte Shinkle
officiating. Memorial services were also held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October
23, 2001 at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home in Steelville, Missouri with
Rev. Cardis Bryan and Rev. Jerry Beers officiating.
A private family interment was held at the Steelville Cemetery in
Steelville, Missouri.
Arrangements are under the direction of Houser-Millard Funeral directors,
Jefferson City Chapel, Jefferson City, Missouri.
