Charles Frederick Finney
Charles “Charlie” Frederick Finney of Sullivan, Missouri was born on
January 13, 1926 at Sullivan, Missouri to Fred and Emma (Wespi) Finney and
passed away Monday, October 25, 2010 at the Meramec Nursing Center at the
age of 84 years.
He was a life-long resident of the Sullivan area where he farmed raised
cattle and crops. He was known as a quiet man who kept to himself and was
frugal.
He had a long-term friendship with Grace Schwidde and they helped each other
on the farm. They also attended many auctions and sales together. Charlie
enjoyed cutting wood, putting in a garden and canning, especially tomatoes.
He is survived by nieces and nephews, Pat Shafferkoetter, Mike Campbell and
wife Rosemary, Nancy Spurgeon and husband Don, Gary Campbell and wife Lucille,
Dave Campbell and wife Teri, Fannie Lea and husband Joe and Steve Campbell
and wife Christine; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 28, 2010 from
the chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri with Pastor Tim
McCarty officiating.
Interment was in the Finney Family Cemetery, rural Sullivan.
Arrangements under the direction of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan,
Missouri.
Marie Huffman
Marie Huffman of Rolla, Missouri was born in Dent County, Missouri on
December 24, 1914 to John Howard and Lula Ann “Kate” (Teague) Howard and
passed away Friday, October 29, 2010 at the age of 95 years.
On August 11, 1933 she married Frank Huffman. who preceded her in death
on February 26, 2007.
Marie helped her husband in their auctioneering business for many years.
She was a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lula Huffman; her
husband, Frank, who passed away February 26, 2007; an infant son, Johnny
Lee Huffman; two sisters, Besta Baird and Mildred Sellers and four
brothers, Wiley, Wilford, Lloyd and Taylor Howard.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard and Judy Huffman
of Vichy, Missouri and Gale and Margie Huffman of Rolla, Missouri; two
brothers, Frederick Howard and Dale Howard and wife Maxine, both of Salem,
Missouri; six grandchildren, Gary Huffman, Janelle Hance, Greg Huffman,
Sam Huffman, Angie Parsons and Leslie Huffman; 13 great grandchildren;
two great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the Null
and Son Funeral Home in Rolla, Missouri.
Funeral service was at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at the Null
and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Norman Cartwright officiating.
Interment was in the Carty Cemetery in Dent County.
Arrangements under the direction of the Null and Son Funeral Home, Rolla,
Missouri.
Carter Francis Mullen
Carter Francis Mullen of Cuba, Missouri was born to Raymond F. and Mae A.
(Carter) Mullen on February 17, 1927 in St. Louis, Missouri and passed
away Wednesday, October 27, 2010 in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 83
years.
Carter retired from the United States Army after 22 years of honorable and
faithful service to his country during World War II and the Korean War. He
enjoyed preaching the Gospel of the Lord and being a great husband, father
and grandfather. In his spare time he enjoyed building and tinkering with
things.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond F. Mullen and Mae a.
(Carter) Mayer; one sister, Alice McCullough; other relatives and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice “Bea” Mullen of Cuba, Missouri; seven
children, Richard and wife Lori Maddox of Corpus Christi, Texas, LaDena and
husband Jim Finerd of San Diego, California, Robert and wife Jackie Maddox of
Oregon, Raymond Maddox of Seattle, Washington, Alan Carter and wife Joyce
Mullen of Union, Missouri, Vicki George of St. Clair, Missouri, Connie and
husband Jim Hoeft of Beaufort, Missouri; brother, Frank Mullen of St. Louis,
Missouri; sister, Judy McLaughlin of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister-in-law, Wanda
Lloyd of Cuba, Missouri; brother-in-law, Ray and wife Maurine Kitchen of St.
Louis, Missouri; 14 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; other relatives
and friends.
Visitation was held on Sunday, October 31, 2010 from 2-5 p.m. at Britton
Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri. Funeral service was Monday, November 1, 2010
at 10:30 a.m. at Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri with Rev. Marvin
Thompson officiating.
Interment with full military honors followed at Ft. Leonard Wood Veterans
Cemetery, Waynesville, Missouri.

Missouri.
Glenn I. Mullen
Glenn I. Mullen of Cuba, Missouri was born Wednesday, October 15, 1924 at
Cuba, Missouri to James Riley and Effie Mae (nee Purvines) Mullen and passed
away Saturday, October 23, 2010 at St. James, Missouri at the age of 86
years and 8 days.
Glenn proudly served in the United States Army from March 12, 1943 until
February 14, 1946. He was awarded a Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal.
Glenn worked for Mullen Contracting in St. Louis for many years as a concrete
finisher. After retirement he moved back to the family farm where he enjoyed
farming, working the cattle, raising a garden and canning tomatoes. In his
younger years he hunted, fished and belonged to a bowling league.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Effie Mae Mullen; five
brothers, Charles L. and wife Marie Mullen, Ancel C. and wife Ruth Mullen,
James Ken “JK” and wife Virginia Mullen, William J. “Joe” and wife Virginia
Mullen and Alfred F. and wife Theresa Mullen; one sister, Edith A. “Edie”
and husband John Jennings; brother-in-law, Harry Karberg; other relatives
and friends.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Hannah Karberg of St. Louis, Missouri;
brother, Paul L. Mullen of St. Louis formerly of Cuba, Missouri; other
relatives and friends.
Visitation was held Thursday, October 28, 2010 from 10 a.m. until noon at
the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri.
Graveside services were held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, October 28, 2010 at
Lea Cemetery, Leasburg, Missouri with full military honors.
Arrangements under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba,
Missouri.
Jay Nations
Jay Nations formerly of Cuba, Missouri was born February 4, 1928, in
Caruthersville, Missouri and passed away August 24, 2010, in Lexington,
Kentucky at the age of 82 years.
As a young man, Jay did a brief stint in the Merchant Marines prior to
serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he was wounded and
then awarded the Purple Heart. He ended his military career as an Army
photographer at 5th Army Headquarters, Chicago.
In 1958 Jay received his bachelor’s degree from Drury College in Springfield,
Missouri. He then earned his Missouri teaching certificate at Southeast
Missouri State after the family moved to Cuba, Missouri, where he lived for
many years, teaching social studies at Crawford Co. R-II for 17 years.
As an active member of the community he was a past master of the Cuba
Masonic Lodge and taught firearms classes to the Cuba Police Department and
the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department. In addition to his long running
newspaper column, “Ozark Handgunner,” published weekly in the Cuba Free
Press, he authored several articles published in the American Rifleman
magazine. His story telling skills extended to verbal tales, enhanced by
his melodious voice.
Following the move to Kentucky, he received his master’s degree in criminal
justice from Eastern Kentucky University in 2003 and went on to teach
criminal justice classes at the community college in Lexington, Kentucky.
Jay was an avid reader with a lifelong interest in the law and firearms.
He is survived by his wife, Jane of 60 years; daughter, Lynda (Don) Short;
sons, John (Tina) Nations, Michael Nations and Craig Nations; grandchildren,
David (Debbie) Short, Ashley (Michael) Castelvecchi, Amber (Gus) Rechtien
and Lindsey (Ron) Sones; two great grandchildren, Devon Green and Eli Sones;
other relatives and friends.
At his request, in the spring of 2011, his ashes will be scattered at a
family gathering on the Nash family farm in Dora, Missouri.
Mandy Berneice Roberts
Mandy Berneice Roberts nee Bryant of Steelville, Missouri was born on Friday,
September 24, 1937 to Horace E. and Margie Viola Freeman Bryant in Sligo,
Missouri and passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Phelps County
Regional Medical Center, Rolla, Missouri at the age of 73 years,1 month and
6 days.
Berneice married Harold Edwin Roberts on December 31, 1957 in Belle, Missouri
and to this union three children were born.
Berneice attended Victory Baptist Church, Cherryville, Missouri. As a
homemaker, she enjoyed embroidering, sewing, crocheting, and baking. Her
hobby was fishing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Margie Bryant; husband,
Harold; grandson, Ronald (RJ) Godbey; six brothers; four sisters; brother-in-
law, William Leach and sisters-in-law, Delores Bryant and Betty Bryant.
She is survived by her children, Gene Roberts of Steelville, Missouri, Sherry
Godbey of Jadwin, Missouri and Ron (Mary) Roberts of Bourbon, Missouri;
brothers, Earl (Eileen) Bryant of Overland Park, Kansas, Willard Bryant of
Steelville, Missouri and Chester Bryant of Cherryville, Missouri; sisters,
Margie (Norman) Eaton and Rose Leach, all of Steelville, Missouri; brothers-in-
law and sisters-in-law, Melvin (Letha) Roberts of Cherryville, Missouri, Darlene
(Jimmy) Kokenberger of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Myrna Roberts of Belle,
Missouri; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; other relatives and
friends.
Visitation was Monday, November 1, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. at the Hutson Funeral
Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Funeral service was at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the Hutson Funeral
Home, Steelville, Missouri with Rev. Roger Silvey officiating.
Burial was in the Cherryville Baptist Cemetery, Cherryville, Missouri.
Arrangements under the direction of Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville,
Missouri.
